Will The Bucs Trade Today For Stephon Gilmore?

October 6th, 2021

Bucs GM Jason Licht

The word on the street says All-Pro cornerback Stephon Gilmore was cut by the Patriots, but is that accurate?

Gilmore has been grumpy about his contract and he’s officially on a physically unable to perform list with a quad injury, though Mike Giardi of NFL Network says Gilmore is no longer injured.

Well-plugged-in Giardi also Twittered this morning that Gilmore is available for a trade today — before he is cut.

Joe is so intrigued given that Bill Belicheat has a long history of trading with the Bucs, including Rob Gronkowski for a fourth-round pick last year.

Gilmore, 31, is a four-time Pro Bowler and was NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2019. The 2012 first-round pick is a beast when healthy. The quad injury occurred in December after Gilmore returned from the COVID list.

Yeah, the Bucs need help at cornerback with a slew of injuries there. And Richard Sherman did not impress Joe in his Bucs debut.

The Tom Brady Effect might already have been in action last night.

Regarding a trade, Gilmore earns about $7 million this season and is a free agent in March. But knock that down to about $5 million remaining for 2021 since we’re four weeks in. The Bucs could pull that off without a ton of magic reworking someone else’s contract.

OJ Howard, lets make it happen.

  2. Ash Says:

He didn’t impress you with three practices under his belt shocker

  3. Francisco Guzman Says:

Do they have the money? They would have to open up something. This is a move you have to make if he’s healthy. Have to make it. Maybe Gilmore would take less to play with Brady.

  4. Anonymous Says:

How do they create Cap space tho

  5. Medicated Pete Says:

Stone Cold Lead Pipe Lock! Done Deal, Pal

  6. Ash Says:

At 31 one years old I just don’t think he takes less money

  7. tampabuscsbro Says:

OJ HOWARD IS OUR TRADE BAIT

PUT HIM OUT THERE USE HIM BA

  8. Francisco Guzman Says:

I think the pats did this to see if they can get some trade value. He hasn’t been released yet until 4 p.m. I would do it for a 3rd round pick.

  9. Medicated Pete Says:

TB12 will restructure his contract again, trade OJ to get rid of his ridiculous $6,000,000.00 million dollar debacle.

  10. ArmchairGM Says:

Going to need to update this post. Gilmore got cut already. If the Bucs want to sign him (and they should), it works out way better this way. We can negotiate a contract under the cap. We only have about $3.3 mil left according to one site and Gilmore was making over $7 mil. Think he’ll take a Brady rate for a year?

  11. BigPoppaBuc Says:

I don’t think the Bucs land this one. Our cap situation is razor thin. This guy wants big bucks. There are other suitors for sure. We can’t sign em all guys.

  12. Bradinator Says:

He will want too much money that we ain’t got.

  13. zzbuc Says:

The only way you can trade OJ, is because you know for certain that Gronk will be back now, if not……Simply forget about it.
Can´t see it happening, I am sorry

  14. Dirty Bucs Says:

You guys are really crazy when it comes to trading Howard. He doesn’t have value. Also, patriots are solid at TE position. There’s no reason for them to entertain a trade for an all pro CB (even if cutting), for an unproven and injury riddled TE.

The only teams that are going to offer a trade for him, are ones that don’t have the top waiver wire pick. Which means we are competing against other teams in the hunt for the postseason. I’m sure they will do whatever it takes to keep him out of Tampa. This isn’t going to be easy to get done. It may get done for us, but I think some of you are a little naive.

  15. Francisco Guzman Says:

ArmChairGM isn’t he getting paid dead money from the pats this year as well? He’s not getting chump change.

  16. Perimeter Blocker Says:

We are all in now. This makes sense. Cap hell will come due at some point down the road…

  17. Dirty Bucs Says:

Also, if they cut him instead of waving him then I stand corrected. Cutting him is definitely better for us

  18. Medicated Pete Says:

The Miami Dolphins are dumb enough to trade for OJ. Give them a 2nd rd pick too for their 7th rd pick

  19. Rico210 aka wutdaBucisthis Says:

    Go Bucs

  20. MadMax Says:

Do it Mr. Licht, former Carolina guy like our kicker Succup….Come on down Stephon, work with us on the $$, you’ll get paid more when we can afford it.

  21. Bird Says:

Patriots just paid top dollar for two tight ends

And howard has no trade value
    Good luck with that trade

He would have to be cut and then maybe rent for a year but gilmore wants a big deal so not sure even brady could pull that off

  22. Buc4evr Says:

I for one was impressed with Sherman on Sunday. The guy hadn’t played in 10 months and was just signed 4 days before and didn’t even know the terminology. To be playing like 98% of plays, 7 tackles and a fumble recovery is pretty good. He will shake the rust off.

I think the Pats did try to trade him, so not sure we need to trade for Gilmore unless it’s for a 4th or 5th round pick, otherwise wait for him to be released and sign him.

  23. Flyin Dutchman Says:

we need corners so yes is the answer. make it happen magic GM

  24. SteveK Says:

Get this done. Would be a monumental pickup

  25. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Lets see what happens before 4pm😳

  26. Beeej Says:

We’ve been backloading one contract after another of late, it’s a given we’re screwed for several years post-Brady, I think we’re all used to that ANYway.

  27. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    MadMaxx

What’s good Bruh. Seems like not long ago I wanted us to Draft Stephon😏

  28. BA4President Says:

You guys clearly don’t listen to Joe. Fact (Not opinion): Howard is untradeable

He doesn’t have a fraction of the film to back up his current contract so no, no one is going to take him in a trade.

  29. Bucs since 76 Says:

The Bucs might have the inside track with Brady. If we can find the money.

  30. PassingThru Says:

OJ Howard plus a second or third round pick. It’s not that New England would chomp at the bit for OJ Howard; the Patriots already have two TEs better than Howard.

The real reason why you’d want New England to accept Howard would be for the Bucs to clear cap space. Right now they probably couldn’t sign Howard off the street once he’s released. In other words a second round pick rather than a third might be necessary which is a sign of desperation.

  31. Bucdjt1174 Says:

Sorry Joe, I am usually with you guys on most things but Sherman practiced with the D for 3 days and was totally working on instinct…sure, he was completed on but made hard hits and was always around the ball. I am sure if Gilmore has any gas in the tank the Licht-father will figure it out and get-er-done!

  32. Francisco Guzman Says:

Gilmore is getting paid 8.5 million from the pats this year in dead money. It shouldn’t be about the money but Gilmore is not getting a contract. Teams just don’t know if he’s fully healthy .

  33. AMI_Chris Says:

Gilmore’s already got a Super Bowl ring, so he’s not taking a discount.

  34. jason light Says:

Do you folks watch football? Pats dont need another TE nor does Miami! get a clue!! Trade them a conditional 7 that can turn into 5 or 6

  35. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Would be interesting to see if Jacksonville would give up….
-SAM K’Lavon Chaisson (22) in exchange for 3rd or 4th round pick

He’s been playing less than 45% of the snaps in Duval. Maybe a new scheme will better suit him. Lord knows we need more speed on the outside.

  36. August 1976 Buc Says:

Like Sherman, Gilmore on Speed Dial, 1-800 HELP NOW!

  37. 163doubleplay Says:

I think Gilmore is meant to be a Buc. We started with a crappy secondary, players starting to get injured and then we signed Richard Sherman and then this news,,,,, i think we are destined to have another run for the SB.

  38. Robert Says:

you guys said Chucky liked the old guys….. sheeeesh this is taking it to a new level. I think we need another, but not at the cost of getting fleeced by BB for a player or draft pick AND that compensation. What will happen when our starters come back???

  39. Winny Testaverde Says:

I too thought Sherman played well given the circumstances…and the refs gave him zero wiggle room.

The Pats spent a pile on 2 mediocre tight ends in free agency…they won’t want a 3rd ( even if they were interested in Howard per-injury ).

Another 4th round pick outta do it if a trade is still a possibility.

  40. Tony Says:

If Tampa has trouble with cap why not entice them patriots to take Howard with a draft pick then they get something for Gilmore ? He hasn’t been released yet but will be by 4 pm so he can be traded and rumors are out there about Tampa Green Bay and Kansas City ? If I’m Tampa I try and make this happen !!

  41. Jerry Says:

He’s unlikely to get a monster deal from a contender mid-season because of the cap. What contender has a ton of money laying around and desperate for a corner? So either he goes to a crappy team for a lot of money, or goes to a contender on a one year deal for less, or he sits on the sofa until March.

  42. PassingThru Says:

Both Patriot TEs are more productive than OJ Howard. Did the Pats overpay for them? Definitely, but that isn’t relevant.

What is relevant? THE PATS WON’T WANT HOWARD ON THEIR ROSTER.

Nix my cap space idea. The Pats have almost no cap space left. The reason they’re releasing Gilmore is to create cap space for Jamie Collins.

The upshot is that if the Bucs want Gilmore, it’ll probably take one or two contract restructures plus a second or third round pick.

  43. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

Trade OJ & Fournette to the Pats for Gilmore before the 4pm deadline

  44. Beeej Says:

If OJ is still in the league next year it will be at the league minimum. Can’t see anyone actually going out of their way to snag him

  45. Joe in Michigan Says:

Yes, please! Have Brady call him, now that’s he’s been cut.

P.S.: The people who think that OJ Howard is some sort of trade chip…Do you think there’d be a high demand for someone you no longer want on your favorite team? To put it into context, Gilmore just got cut, and he’s good.

  46. SOEbuc Says:

    Beeej=Brady bandwagon

$5M a lot of money. Gilmore can’t just come in here and automatically learn the playbook and win the starting role like Sherman (lol). Our starters will probably return by or before the week 9 bye. If we sign Gilmore, it’s gonna let us know how serious the injuries really are on the back end.

  47. Eckwood Says:

I’m prob dead wrong but I think they have the cap room especially when you cut a Mil with a release……….. could always bump to a third or 4 th and hv Patriots eat a mil or two ……….Pretty decent chance Licht gets this done …….. may the best four ( lots of dime packages and I’m sure Sherman can play some safety ) play !! Gilmore , Davis and two more Y T B Determined !!!

  48. PassingThru Says:

I don’t think Gilmore will sign for $5 million, he’s going to want a big extension if he’s amiable to playing for Tampa Bay. He’s 31 and this is his last chance at a big, multi-year contract.

  49. BUC IT Says:

We got to make this work. If he doesn’t go to us then he goes to another powerhouse team and this guy definitely shifts the balance of power. We need to do whatever we need to do to get him. If we need to free up money…. then do what you have to do. I can’t think of many players more valuable then this guy.

  50. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

He was released. So no need to trade.

  51. Rico210 aka wutdaBucisthis Says:

    Just get it done Licht
    Go Bucs

  52. Buc4evr Says:

Think Gilmore already has guaranteed money this year from the Pats, so he can take a one year deal to prove he can play and gets to play for a shot at the SB with Brady. Plus he gets to spite Belichek. Why not?

  53. Duane Says:

Gilmore to the Bucs would be yet another coup for Licht. I would like to see that happen.

  54. PassingThru Says:

Gilmore hasn’t been released. It has been announced that he will be released, big difference. At the earliest the paperwork will be submitted by 4 PM.

  55. Mtbucsfan Says:

Why trade OJ we dont need to. He would be released kick them a 5th and 6th round and call it good.

  56. PassingThru Says:

I don’t think Gilmore has any guaranteed money.

  57. Killian Says:

I’m sure we could trade away ROJO and Howard or brate to either New England or other teams for picks that we could then trade to New England for him.

  58. Rico210 aka wutdaBucisthis Says:

My g@d man why am I being moderated. Can’t interact like this Joe
C’mon man Hundreds are moderated. It’s ok. It really is. –Joe

  59. PassingThru Says:

The reason New England is releasing Gilmore is to create cap space. They want to sign Jamie Collins. That means if they wanted a Buc player, it would be someone with a very cheap rookie contract.

  60. Youngbucs Says:

Falcons offered a contract and he told them no way lol. Bet he not telling Brady no!!!

  61. deuceswild78 Says:

wth do the patriots need oj howard for… are they desperate for a 3rd string TE… unless they take a bargain basement deal from another team to spite the bucs, I see him getting cut and signing with us

  62. PassingThru Says:

The Patriots have no need for OJ Howard. They have two TEs on the roster who are more productive than OJ.

But that’s a minor point. The reason they won’t want OJ is that they need cap space to sign Jamie Collins. Taking OJ back in a trade would destroy whatever they’re trying to gain in cap space.

  63. Buczilla Says:

Holy hell, I hope this true. Do it Licht!

  64. IrishMist Says:

The Glaziers need to offer him a base rate of 2 million to play football, and a 7 million consulting fee from Manchester United on how to increase soccer awareness among African American youths.

  65. Jmarkbuc Says:

I’m sure our GM is on FaceTime right now. When he gets the deal done, he’ll give him JLicht’s number.

  66. Dirty Bucs Says:

Irish might be into something … If it weren’t illegal to get around the cap space that way lol

  67. JimmyJack Says:

You people drive me crazy. What in the hell would New England want Howard for. They are going nowhere at 1-3 and have a rookie QB. They are building for the future. How in the world would you think they want Howard for 12 games? Its really one of the worst ideas i ever heard.

Even if the Patriots were ready to contend and needed a TE. They would want a proven player. Not a draft bust rhat cant even make it to December.

We might be able to get Gilmore if hes cut but they aint trading him to us. We are not on their list of teams they are talking. Foolish to think they are gonna help give us more pieces to win another title.

  68. Buc4evr Says:

The more I read about this, not sure if we can come up $10m (prorated from$15m per season) ? Plus he probably won’t play until game 7, when Dean will be back and maybe even SMB. Unless the Goat can make it happen, I don’t think we can sign him if he only wants to cash out.

  69. PassingThru Says:

I’m sure Belichick would love to pave the way for Brady to get to the Super Bowl.

    /sarcasm

  70. Rob In Land O Lakes Says:

Not sure if it’s been mentioned here or not, but according to Greg Auman at The Athletic, Stephon Gilmore just started following several Bucs on IG including Jason Licht… for what that is worth…

  71. Mike Johnson Says:

A whole lotta other teams have improved Defensively this year. Its double hard to repeat as champs. Wanna up your odds? Pay the man..Bring him on board. Our secondary absolutely sucks to holy hell and beyond.

  72. 2Legit2Quit Says:

Do not trade anyone! Florida does not have a state income tax! With his income that should be enticing enough!

  73. Flyin Dutchman Says:

why would the patriots want OJ? seriously

  74. Jmarkbuc Says:

Why would Brandon High School want OJ?

  75. crazyBucs_CL Says:

    @Flyin Dutchman Says:
“why would the patriots want OJ? seriously”
    ——————-
they don’t, i don’t see ANY team to want him, if you going for championship, he is not helping you, but that is not the point. The point is we need Gilmore, so lure them out with something…something for next year….draft or drafts..it doesn’t matter. This season may be the last time that we can compete for SB for long long painful-time.
    Make it happen, all in.

  76. Baby Grace Says:

“Cutting him is definitely better for us”

We have no chance to get him if he is cut! If he is cut he is free to sign with any team and will want at least a 3 year deal worth somewhere in the mid to high 20 million minimum with at least half guaranteed. If we trade for him it will only be what is left on his current contract which is around 5mil.

  77. SufferingSince76 Says:

Rico210, every comment I make is moderated. No matter what I say. Some people are just lucky that way.

  78. Buc king Says:

    2 4rd round draft picks n get a 4th back or 5th

  79. mark2001 Says:

Sounds like he is gone to Carolina for a sixth rounder.

  80. SOEbuc Says:

If they don’t do it, I understand and okay with it. If they do it, I understand stand and okay.

Can’t put up money and DBs will return sooner than later. But if they do get him…You got Gilmore/Dean, SMB/Cockrell, Davis/Sherman at CB position. Or that’s the way I can see it.

DB depth going from ashy, to classy.

  81. Buczilla Says:

Stinking panthers got him for a sixth round pick. Either Bill didn’t want to trade with us or Licht dropped the ball man. Gilmore would have been worth a 4 or 5 all day long if he’s healthy.

  82. crazyBucs_CL Says:

panthers is the team to beat now, or we going to end up with wild card, if we rlucky.

  83. Tim R. Says:

How is Sherman going to feel if you pay him that kind of money?

  84. MikeRalstott Says:

Did that guy just say trade Fournette? 😂 Put down the pipe dude.

  85. SteveM Says:

Time for Brady and Licht to work their magic together and get Gilmore.

  86. MadMax Says:

Yo LUV, Sup my man (just seeing this, working a lot now)….yeah we both did, but now i see he went to the panthers….oh well.

Im still saying CB with our first then LT with our 2nd.
