O-Line Coach Reviews Tristan Wirfs

October 8th, 2021

Tristan Wirfs

It’s time to put a microscope on Tristan Wirfs.

Is he the same beast he was last season?

Wirfs’ offensive line coach, Joe Gilbert, went there a bit this week on Bucs Total Access on the official team website.

Gilbert lauded Wirfs for being a hardworking sponge of a rookie who eagerly accepted coaching, in addition to his extreme talent, power and size.

But in 2021, Wirfs hasn’t been the same dude on game day.

“I think this year, you know, he started off not quite where he ended up I think a little bit,” Gilbert said. “But really this past game against the Patriots he played extremely well, probably the best he’s played all year. He really took a step forward in the run game. You know, he had some things that he knows that we constantly talk about that he has to do better at in [the run game] and it showed on tape. So I was really happy for him. He’s kind of really started to see the progress in certain areas that he has to improve on. I think that really showed this past game.”

Joe’s glad to hear confirmation from Gilbert that Wirfs wasn’t quite the same player in Weeks 1 through 3. He was in no way bad, but Joe hadn’t been seeing the All-Pro who left the field in February.

Joe is fired up to hear of Wirfs’ improvement. He’s just 22 years old and Joe would not be surprised if Wirfs finishes this season a better player than he was in 2021.

Next Level = Road Grader for Running Backs.

    GO BUCS!!!

  2. Medicated Pete Says:

He’s 10 times better than Donovan Smith (that’s what he should’ve said)

  3. SB Says:

Take some more meds Pete. 10Xs?

  4. Buczilla Says:

    Another home run for Licht.

  5. The Beer Whisperer Says:

    1) Sophomore slump?
    2) Or, edge rushers going up against him, have years worth of film to study his tendencies?
    3) Or, he’s been eating too many fruity pebbles?
(he said, he likes his fruity pebbles)

    I choose #3

  6. The Beer Whisperer Says:

If Tristan were to to swap to wheaties or corn flakes, he could take his game to whole nother level, I believe.

  7. Kalind Says:

Dude is a top 5 player on the team. Brady, Vea, Evans…then probably Wirfs and David

  8. Will Says:

Kid is 22yrs old once he gets focused on his total game as well as nutrition. He’s gong to be a real problem for those lining up across from him. I’d say what we’ve seen this year is probably a bit of him thinking that what he did last year training wise and on the field was good enough since we won the Superbowl in his rookie year. Plus all the praise he was getting. Kid has a BRIGHT future if he stays focused.

  9. Listnfrmafar Says:

I am off today and rewatched the Bucs/ Pat’s game again. Bucs played far better than we give them credit for, they actually kicked the piss out of them.

    Observations:

Oline played great one sack, Cappa couldn’t get out fast enough and Rojo got in his way as he was pushing Judon causing the sack.

Smith not too bad considering he had to block their best defender, a couple of times a little lazy on the run.

6 dropped passes 2 in their hands for TD’s & a missed FG didn’t help.

Brady had a couple of passes that sailed but only about 3 or 4, the rest were Brate and Brady not on the same page (to be expected) Johnson stop short on a go route and over throw to McCoy TE was a throw away he was double teamed.

Mac Jones didn’t throw 1 pass for over 10 yards longest pass play was 17 yds on trick play.

Definitely Pats fumble in first period refs botched that one.

Offsides not called on Pat’s & bad PA on Sherman. Hands to the face call was made up later by refs calling one on Pat’s that never happened.

Bottom line Bucs kicked their asses but didn’t score a lot of points and Mac Jones can take a beating.

    Go Bucs!

  10. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Let’s here from the inside LB coach on what is wrong with Devon White. Maybe he just needs to go on the Covid-19 list again.

  11. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Nothing wrong with Devin White…..teams aren’t running & our CBs are making the tackles…..

  12. DoooshLaRue Says:

Maybe our All-World LT was giving him some pointers?

  13. Lamarcus Says:

Yea there was a play and it look like Wirfs almost killed himself doing such a Tebow-esque block that me scratching my head

  14. The Beer Whisperer Says:

Bucs kicked the Patriots asses, by 2 points.

“It’s now, on to to Miami”

  15. SlyPirate Says:

He got a dose of reality and now he’s back to form and with new found wisdom.

  16. The Beer Whisperer Says:

As an “armchair football expert” I re-watched the Bucs / Pats game today.
And I know no more, than I did Sunday night.

  17. Rod Munch Says:

BIG news! With 105 yards passing this week, Tom Brady will pass Craig Erickson for 9th place on the all-time Buccaneers passing yards chart. Meanwhile his next INT will tie him with Fitz and Glennon as #15 in that category.

Amazingly Brady is only 28th on all-time longest pass in team history with just a 50 yarder. He’s trailing some Bucs QB named Jerry Golsteyn – who I have no memory of. Josh Freeman holds the record at 95 yards, Vinny is next at 89, then it’s the giraffe himself, Mike Glenn, at 85. Surprisingly, for all the downfield throwing, Winston is 12th on the list at 71 yards.

But long plays like this aren’t made in the air, it’s normally after the catch, and it’s interesting that Brady has yet to get one of those catch and long runs. Maybe AB can do that this week.

  18. Listnfrmafar Says:

Bear whisperer, sorry if you don’t appreciate the post then skip it. Many were getting all doom and gloom about this team after last two weeks. I was just going with the cup half ful versus asses like yourself who chose to look at it half empty. FO!

  19. The Beer Whisperer Says:

From what I observed (to the untrained eye) the Patriots missed, the likely game winning field goal, by a few inches.

  20. Rod Munch Says:

Listnfrmafar – I appreciate the write-up, I appreciate anyone who actually puts a little effort into their posts instead of the normal lazy morons around here that just repeat what some idiot on the radio said. The dopes who just dismiss comments, while contributing nothing, are just garbage individuals with fat wifes and who hate their lives. They’ll hopefully do the right thing and take that final drive to the top of the Skyway and do a cannonball over the edge.

I don’t agree that the Bucs dominated, but I do think the Bucs made quite a few mistakes and still won against a team with a good defense and offense that didn’t make a lot of mistakes.

That’s interesting on Jones not throwing over 10 yards downfield the entire game. I knew he wasn’t going deep, but I didn’t know that. Just shows that teams know the Bucs are open to the quick passing game, at lot of the time because Bowles is blitzing guys who are 5-8 yards off the LOS, so technically it’s a blitz, but the QBs are throwing the ball before there is even a hint of pressure. Bowles needs to get guys up on the line, and blitz from there, and also jam the receivers. Yes, you will give up some long plays, but you’ll also get sacks and turnovers.

As for Brady, it certainly seemed like he was off on a lot more throws than that. For example, right before half-time he had back to back bad throws to AB in the redzone. Brady knows he didn’t play well, as he said post game when he said he was affected a lot more than expected by his emotions — which in turn affected his play. He’ll be just fine, and I’d expect will have a big week against the Dolphins. I’m hoping at least 350 yards and 4 TDs.

  21. Rod Munch Says:

The Beer Whisperer – see above, I’m talking about you! Useless individuals who say boring things love when others talk about them – so I know you’ll appreciate it.

    You’re welcome!

  22. Listnfrmafar Says:

How is that game winning FG with 50 seconds left on the clock with 1 timeout left? Brady has 64 game winning drives under his belt best all time in NFL, many of.those wins with less time and timeouts than Sunday. That game was far from over. It appears your attitude is throw in the towel when your back is against the wall. You’re a Buc of old LOSER!

  23. The Beer Whisperer Says:

    Thank you, Rod Munch.

“It’s on to Miami” This one is in the books. Good, bad, or indifferent.

  24. Rod Munch Says:

The Beer Whisperer – No, thank you!

  25. Rod Munch Says:

Listnfrmafar – Yeah, I was actually a bit disappointed that Folk didn’t make the FG since I have zero doubt that he would have marched the Bucs down the field and won the game with no time left. What a nice kick to the face of Pats fans, to watch Brady do to them, what he did to so many teams. Also, post game, would have been all about how stupid the Pats were to let him go.

The only thing I didn’t want to see happen was for the Pats to go for it on 4th down, since they’re likely going to make it, then they would have been able to run the clock down with a much better FG chance. Thankfully Bill sort of chickened out at the end.

  26. Listnfrmafar Says:

Rod Munch, the consensus in New England is that Belichick didn’t want to put the loss on Jones rather than Folk a veteran or himself, after all he did hit the upright. On to Miami! I would expect a more normal Bucs offensive showing.

  27. Rod Munch Says:

Listnfrmafar – Yeah, I heard that as well, that with the FG attempt, they leave the game with good feelings about the kid, where as if they go for it, and he doesn’t get it, then all the focus is on how Jones blew the game in the end and isn’t clutch like Brady. I don’t know if I buy it, but I’m happy he went that route.

  28. Duane Says:

I dont think Wirfs is slumping. Maybe a speedbump. Confident he will play back to form, and I agree with Joe, maybe he can have a bigger impact on the run game.

  29. Brad Says:

Why are people still killing D Smith? He’s easily a top 10 LT if not closing in on Top 5. I used to crush him too.

  30. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Top 10?
    Possibly top 5?

    Do you watch him play?

That is an idiotic statement Brad.

  31. DoooshLaRue Says:

Durable Donnie isn’t on ANYONE’S list of top OTs
    Wirfs is but not DD.

    Watch him
    He sucks

  32. Rod Munch Says:

Brad – He’s not top 5, but I’d say he’s average, which means probably around #12-15.

Dooodouche is literally an idiot who thinks Chris Meyers is an excellent play-by-play guy, so that tells you everything about him and his knowledge of anything.

But the anti-Smith morons are idiots that get mad that he’s not angry. GRRRR, he’s not angry, GRRRRR. They’re the same dumbbells that thought McCoy sucked because he wasn’t angry… GRRRR…. Because you need your stupid offensive lineman running into piles late and getting 15-yard penalties every week to be good in the NFL. GRRRR…. so angry.

  33. geno711 Says:

I rewatched the Patriots game too earlier this week. I did look at some of the players a little closer. I appreciate the writeup from Listnfrmafar.

I did think that D Smith had a bad game both pass blocking and run blocking. Smith did allow something like 4 or 5 pressures and really has never been a physical in the run game and remember at least two plays in NE game where he is just standing and never got a good bend in the run game and Fournette went no where.

All that being said, I tend to agree with Munch that he is an average left tackle.

Just has a few games like the New England game where he seemed less than average to me.

  34. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Oh Fancy Man…… wrong again.
I never said I liked Chris Meyers, only that I don’t find him to be the worst announcer.
You’re just hurt that I don’t think Ronde is very good at it.
Great player but not a great commentator.

Softie93 sucked because he had no fire. That’s different than playing stupid.
    Apologies for hits.
    Helping opponents off the turf.
And the absolute worst…… laughing and having a good time while losing.

    The proof is there.
You chose not to see it.

    Anywho…….. who’s angry?
    He’s gone and we’re winning.
    😘

  35. Buc1987 Says:

    Nice retort Dooosh.

  36. Rod Munch Says:

    Doodoodocuche…

So the Bucs are winning because they got rid of McCoy? Not because they brought in Tom Brady? LOL!

Thanks for making my point that you’re a nutjob.

Also there’s nothing mad going on, I take true joy in making fun of others, so this is relaxing and fun for me! So thank you for providing me material with that barely spinning hamster wheel in your head.

  37. Rod Munch Says:

geno711 – Also, if the point wasn’t obvious – saying Smith is an average LT isn’t a knock, he’s average, he’s dependable, he gets the job done and doesn’t take any days off. We can’t afford to have superstars at every position, you need some average guys to create a full roster.

  38. Terry Lynn Crisman Says:

So Brady has a few so so games and it’s Wirfs fault?

  39. Wild Bill Says:

At left tackle Smith is in a key position. He blocks on Bradys blind side. This year I have been paying closer attention to Smiths pass blocking. He gets beat a lot and gets away with grabbing his opponent while getting beat. He gets away with it a lot. Not sure why he doesn’t get called more often but he keeps his hands up high on the shoulder pads when he grabs and the refs don’t call it. He does have to play against the opponents best pass rusher quite often. I don’t know if they keep count but my guess is he leads the O line in holding calls.

  40. Listnfrmafar Says:

Terry-Lynn, Brady had a few bad games??? He was the only one that kept fighting in LA, a few bad throws against the Pat’s when two PERFECT TD passes one to Evan’s and one to Brown were dropped. There was NO WAY Bucs lose Pat’s game even if Folk hits field goal, I went back Brady would of had 55 seconds and TWO timeouts left, a Belichick nightmare. Yes Bear whisperer I am writing about it again. Also Smith did not have a bad game he went head to head with Pat’s best defensive player Judon, he is a beast.

  41. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Listnfrmafar,

Go back and watch the Pats game and then explain to us why Durable Donnie simply did not block the DE and just let him have a free lane?
    Scheme?
    I doubt that.
    It’s what he does.

    Wild Bill,
Totally agree with your DD observations.
He does hold a lot and has poor technique.
I don’t know how he gets away with it?

  42. Listnfrmafar Says:

Doosh, I will say it again, Judon is a beast,.most games he is double teamed. It is not.uncommon for a olineman to hold when defending a superior d player, TJ & JJ Watt, Jones, Clowney, Donald etc. Go back and watch the holding on Shaq and VV in that game, no worse than Smith. I am a little surprised BA hasn’t tried Wirf after last seasons performance at left tackle to protect Brady’s blindside, maybe because they are over paying Smith. Make no mistake it is not easy to find a solid left tackle.
Off topic Gholston is very underrated, he a monster.

  43. DoooshLaRue Says:

I’m hoping Wirfs moves to LT and we can trade DD next year. We’d have a much better LT for less money for 2-3 years and hopefully can draft a RT in the early rounds next year.

You’re right about the holding being committed against us but I still think DD is a poor LT that’s grossly overpaid.
