Leonard Fournette Credits LeSean McCoy For Improvement

October 19th, 2021

Grateful Lenny

Leonard “Lombardi Lenny” Fournette has taken his game to another level.

That’s the view of Fournette himself and former Bucs running back and Fournette mentor LeSean “Shady” McCoy.

Of course, Joe had the alarm clock set this morninng to hear Fournette talk to Shady on SiriusXM NFL Radio, where McCoy is a new co-host.

Shady asked Fournette about his mindset this season versus coming in last year.

Fournette said Bucco Bruce Arians telling the team there is “no starter” at running back this summer sent him back to his roots at Louisiana State University.

“In my mind, it’s like coming in college as a freshman and competing every day trying get that spot. So that’s all I do,” Fournette said. “You know I go home watch film, after practice work on the things I think I need to work on and be best at, and understanding the playbook, understanding myself. And I learned from [Shady McCoy] about feeling it, when I’m running the ball, feel it. Always go out there and kind of like understimate a lot of things. A lot of great things come from you, Shady.”

It was a tender on-air moment and a good look inside Lombardi Lenny’s head.

Shady talked to Fournette about how he sees him being more elusive this season in addition to being a bruising back.

Fournette replied that he learned a new level of elusiveness watching Shady work last season at One Buc Palace, and Fournette emphatically said of making guys miss, “That’s how you get paid.”

Run for the cash, Lenny!

Lenny has shown some light feet this year, but him, and Rojo will never be that kind of back. They both struggle at times to find the hole, and don’t have that elusiveness in tight spaces to make someone miss then have that sudden burst to fly out the other side. Both are basically one cut down hill runners. That’s why I wouldn’t be opposed to trading Rojo. Love to see the Bucs pair Lenny with a scat back like the days of Dunn, and Allstott.

  2. PSL Bob Says:

I love the camaraderie that seems to have permeated One Buc Place since Brady’s arrival. No greediness or compartmentalizing. Everyone seems to want to help their team mates, even those competing for the same roster spot, improve their game. And that, my friends, is a great team first spirit!

  3. Cannon Says:

I recall Lenny ducking a tackle in the last game and going for a nice gain for a first down.

Nothing Earth shattering, but it was a solid move, and kept the drive alive.

  4. Casual Observer Says:

Lenny is getting better each game. High ceiling.

  5. Thisisouryear!!! Says:

Lenny’s playing great. Hitting the holes, making people miss and running over them. His hands are so much better now than even earlier in the season. I think he’s a 3 down back. Even when he comes off the field for a breather, the offense isn’t the same.

  6. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Speaking of Louisiana State University, Forrnette’s old coach has got LSU to pay him 17 Million Dollars NOT to coach there, next year!
That is right, the current coach at Louisiana State University is gonna walk with 17 Million Dollars!

  7. Rayjay1122 Says:

I bet there are 17 million people who have perfected the art of getting paid to do nothing.

  8. Tackleblockwin Says:

It is so obvious Lenny has improved from last season. The ability and threat of us running the ball well is so important. He is playing with 100% confidence now within this offense.

  9. Seattle Buc is back in TB Says:

The beat up secondary should take Lenny out for dinner and beers at Big Storm. He’s running well and clocking that possession, keeping the D off the field.

  10. Biff Barker Says:

Lenny is best used Sunday to burn minutes off the clock and dominate TOP. Bucs game plan should the Bears chances to dink and dunk.

  11. Bucsfanman Says:

    Feed him!
He’s definitely running with more confidence and physicality. Love it.

  12. SlyPirate Says:

Casual Observer … My observation, too.

The more carries the Bucs give 4Net each game the better he gets.

I can’t wait to see where the running game is at the end of the regular season.

  13. Doctor Stroud Says:

Good point about LSU’s coach, but $17 mill is nothing compared to what Team Glazer has shelled out. Team Glazer absolutely loves to pay coaches (and entire coaching staffs) not to coach. Had LSU given their coach an extension and then fired him, it would have been a carbon copy of the Team Glazer playbook.

Lenny doesn’t have to juke the world and make guys miss. Get their feet light and truck-stick the living daylights out of them. He’s running with authority. It feels like he’s rejuvenated on a well-coached successful team. He was lackadaisical for a few years with no real shot at a SB title. All that has changed. Go Lenny! Go Bucs!

  15. cmurda Says:

Excellent point Seattle Buc. Spot on.

He can be in the elite with just a few more games
