Ian Beckles Fears A Long Carlton Davis Layoff

October 9th, 2021

Riffing on the Bucs.

As usual, a former Bucs guard has strong takes on his former team’s play.

And that would be popular local sports radio personality Ian Beckles. After the Bucs improved to 3-1 by beating the Belicheats, he shared reactions on his podcast “In the Trenches.”

On the run game:

“Offensively we ran the ball as well as we have run it in a while, which is a good thing.” … “Defensively, the reason why we won that game was nobody can run the ball against us. Nobody. .. The fact that Mac Jones had that team in the game at the end despite minus-one yards rushing, that should tell you something about Mac Jones. That kid can play.”

On Richard Sherman’s play in his first Bucs game:

“What you have to start to get worried about right now are injuries. Richard Sherman, who came off the street, literally, stepped right into the starting lineup and played 98 percent of the plays. [New England] went after him. I don’t think he played poorly. He said he would need two weeks to get ready. Well Richard, you’ve got two days. Did he give up some plays? Yes. Should he have given up some plays? One-hundred percent. As a whole defensively, when you give up [points] in the teens, you cannot complain about that.”

On how hard the game was for the Bucs, and to gauge progress:

“So when you look at this game, I don’t know if the Buccaneers raised their stock or lowered their stock, [or] stayed the same? I don’t know. But you have to understand that going to New England and winning in New England especially with all this [Brady-Belichick] crap going on, that was tough, OK?”

On Carlton Davis’s quad injury:

Beckles said he once had a quad injury that looked exactly like what Davis had. Beckles said he only missed a few games but that injury is much different for a cornerback. Beckles said he doesn’t expect Davis back for at least a month.

Beckles is not overwhelmed by rookie outside linebacker Joe Tryon-Shoyinka:

Beckles believes one of Joe Tryon-Shoyinka’s sacks should be given to Vita Vea because he took out two linemen so JTS had a free shot at Mac Jones. “He’s still not a great rusher… but he’s a great athlete,” Beckles said.

If you start crediting sacks to a player who wasn’t in on the sack….it will get out of hand.
Beckles has no earthly idea about Davis’ quad injury…..neither does BA & for that matter, neither does Davis at this point.

I think we are expecting too much from Sherman this early…he should be improving game by game.

I don’t agree with him all the time, but I pretty much agree with all of his assessments here. One more thing about Big Mac Jones (have you seen his shirtless college picture? Seems to have slim down a bit since then), if belichick trusted him he would have gone for it on 4th down. He also didn’t attempt any passes down the field. Another sign of distrust. Yes he’s a rookie, but against a decimated secondary he threw dink and dunk passes and completed a lot of them. Took some punishment too. But as a whole based on his other games as well I’m not seeing anything special. Yet.

Yes, Vita Vea took out 2 defenders, so Joe Tryon could run straight in, and get the sack.

His lisp is so bad i can’t understand anything he says

  5. Steven007 Says:

Pete, it’s a French Canadian lisp with a touch of the Barbadian influence. It’s delightful, just admit it.

  6. Medicated Pete Says:

No, it’s a lisp while he’s choking on his own neck fat. Highly disturbing

IDK Beckles is an odd personality that takes some odd stances on things.

Plus he brings up his own career way too much and goes on and on about his career at a replacement level starter.

  8. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

It has been so long since he played, I have forgotten.
Now, I associate him with food, because he has become sort of a food critic.
He is a character, but I like him.

  9. Hodad Says:

Never said he would never be a great pass rusher. You have to have the first part, before the second part can ever come.

You internet trolls talking smack about a guy who has played the game all his life and had a 9 year career in the nfl?? Pete your just a fn dbag who lives on this web board. You must have a pretty pathetic life to get your kicks talking sh…about another human that you dont even know. Id like to smack little biatches like you across the mouth,,

  11. Darin Says:

    Me too Kyle me too.

I like Beckles. One of the few thats not affraid to go against the grain. His criticism of Gerald McCoy illustrates that.

He has been critical of Tryon since the preseason but Im not seeing it. He might have some areas to improve but his passrush game looks hard to complain about……And he stepped up in crunch time on the final drive. Pressured the QB and forced an incompletion which setup Davids big play to end the drive. His impact was a huge reason we won. Tough to ignore that.

  13. Craig Says:

Beckles always says it the way he sees it. Sometimes he gives you another view to add, sometimes his angle is askance and not really applicable.

Tryon-Shoyinka is an outside linebacker and a delayed blitzer, like Devin White. That position is meant to rely on down linemen to clear them a path.

If Davis pulled his quad, it is going to take a while to come back. ^ weeks at the least. It is too easy to try to come back, re-pull it and have to start over.

We have a somewhat lull in the schedule, time to get everyone healthy and ready for the end of the season and beyond.
