CBS: Bucs May Have Eye On New Starter — For 2022

October 21st, 2021

What would he do?

How has life changed around Bucs fandom in the past year? Drastically.

For example, during The Lost Decade, Joe would just about be ready now to start working on the following spring’s draft. Halloween launched draft talk and the bye week was effectively the end of the season.

Now? Well, Joe didn’t get in draft mode until March even though the Bucs won the Super Bowl in early February.

Right now the draft may be the furthest thing from Joe’s mind. But not so much CBS NFL insider, heavy metal-headbanging Jason La Canfora. He predicts 12 teams will be looking for a quarterback this offseason, whether by trade, by free agent signing or in the draft.

And the last team on his list? The Bucs.

No, La Canfora doesn’t believe the Bucs will get rid of Tom Brady with a year left on his current contract. But La Canfora suggests Brady might just shock everyone and pack it in.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

I think it’s more likely Tom Brady plays til he is 50 than he retires at 44, but should they win back-to-back Super Bowls you have to at least entertain the question that perhaps he leaves the game. Doubtful, under any circumstances at this point, but, again, the dude is 44.

Joe doesn’t think Brady is going anywhere, but La Canfora’s take was intriguing so Joe will play along.

If Brady leaves, does Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians hang it up, too? Joe doesn’t expect Arians, 69, to coach longer than Brady plays (with the Bucs).

If Arians did, would he turn to Blaine Gabbert? The Bucs next year will still be a damn good team. And we all know Arians likes him some Blaine Gabbert.

Joe highly doubts Kyle Trask is ready to start full-time come September.

  1. TOM Says:

IMHO I do not think Blaine Gabbert is the answer. What is? I’m not sure.

  2. Since76 Says:

Gabbert would win 3 or four games with this team. Plus or minus one. He is not a starter.

  3. Pruritus Ani Says:

If this were to occur, there aren’t enough distilled spirits or pharmaceuticals to numb the collective pain of Bucs fans throughout the world.

  4. westernbuc Says:

Brady isn’t going anywhere until Father Time kicks in.

  5. Thisisouryear!!! Says:

I think Brady wants that perfect season. If that happens, I think he’s gone, but until then I agree father time has to kick in.

  6. BerrickDrooks Says:

If that does happen then either sign or trade for Aaron Rodgers

  7. Tackleblockwin Says:

If Brady retires after this season and we can keep most of the other starters on offense together we need to enter the Rodgers sweepstakes or call Seattle about Russell Wilson. Most likely however, we begin to rebuild and see if Trask can play or not. If that happens we will lose many players to retirement or free agency imo. It will be rebuild time.

  8. Listnfrmafar Says:

Brady plays this year and depending on who Bucs are able to retain may determine if he plays next season. 45 was his goal. Doubt Gronk coming back may retire for good while he can still breathe & walk.

  9. Anonymous Says:

They literally said the Bucs and Brady are planning on another new contract after this season. People often say one thing and do another. –Joe This is dumb clickbait.

  10. VSyl Says:

Brady isn’t leaving while this team is a “Championship Team” as he personally said. His main desire is always to win the super bowl. Why would he go to another system and make things complicated for himself again when he can stay and play with a great roster, good organization that does everything and brings any player he wants, and a system he is already familiar. That just doens’t make sense.

  11. Medicated Pete Says:

If he retires & bucs can’t land a whale QB like Rodgers, blow up the entire franchise & The C.I.T.S. and start over says Pete

  12. DoooshLaRue Says:

2 words that fire Joe up……..

    Click
    Bait

    Works every time!

  13. Craig Says:

I haven’t heard much about Trask of late, so why do you doubt him?

The position of NFL QB is a half mystical thing that talks of things like the game slowing down, and players on the same page. Trask played in the SEC, against Alabama, LSU, and Georgia. It the jump from there so far that he can’t make it?

I think Trask would stand a better chance than Blane Freaking Gabbert, the guy who was replaced by Blake Bortles.

  14. lambchop Says:

Honestly, I think some of you are sleeping on Blaine. From the little action that we’ve seen, he looks like he’s learned quite a bit under Tom. He’s no Brady, but he can easily win 8-10 games with this team. For one, I’ve noticed he is placing the ball better where only his WRs can get the ball. He seems to understand that the ball has to come out fast, so his progressions are faster. Being under Tom, this guy has his best chance to resurrect a career. He knows what it takes now and if Dilfer and Flacco can win a SB, Blaine can capitalize on this offense with a stout defense to back it up.

  15. Buccnbeliever Says:

@joe, Isn’t the future completely mortgaged with all the contract extensions?

What I’m saying is, a rebuild is inevitable after Brady hangs it up, right?

  16. SB Says:

Joe highly doubts Kyle Trask is ready to start full-time come September.

    ………………………..

I don’t know about this Joe. He had never been a starter before he got thrust into it and almost won the Heisman.
He will have had a year and a half to pick Brady’s brain. He is a smart kid. Trask haters will be eating crow after Brady leaves.

  17. Buddhaboy19 Says:

@ Medicated Pete, love the term CITS, coined from Chris Thomas, old school.
    Community investment tax stadium…..lol.
Keep Brady –> then sign someone like josh allen after his 5 year in Buffalo or maybe Cincy qb after his 5 yr.

  18. Beeej Says:

Regarding Gabbert–everyone thought Ryan Tannehill was a journeyman backup until he had to start for the Titans

  19. Alanbucsfan Says:

If Brady retires, Bucs will likely lose Suh, JPP, Davis, Fournette, Brown, Godwin and Jensen to free agency or retirement.
It will be back to the drawing board…

  20. zzbuc Says:

    I agree 100% with westernbuc ….TB12 isn´t going anywhere…..

  21. Mtbucsfan Says:

I dont think Brady is done till 50. But if he does retire in a couple years itd be time to tank for Archie lol.

  22. Buc92’ Says:

I don’t understand why ppl write off Kyle Trask as if he’s done something wrong , he hasn’t had a regular season snap yet, Let him fail first guys , which I think he’s going to be just fine . I could live with Matt Ryan for 10 years with a talented team.

    GoBucs!

  23. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Speaking of Chris Thomas, it is a real shame both him and The Big Dog did not live to see the Tampa Bay Bucs of today.

  24. Mike Says:

If the Bucs win back to back SuperBowls, that will make Brady even hungrier to go for the threepeat. He’s not retiring after this season in any scenario I can think of.

  25. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

PT Barnum is back in the house.

  26. VSyl Says:

    Threepeat…There is a record Brady certainly wants…

  27. Duane Says:

Brady’s replacement is not on this roster. Team will still have talent and likely find another veteran. Even if they dont find the right guy, 3 years of football with the GOAT will hold me for another decade.

  28. Your Mom Says:

You have to think Russell Wilson and Aaron Rodgers dream about stepping into this Bucs organization if Brady retires this season. (Which Brady won’t, he doesn’t know how to live w/o competing)

  29. Captain Dan Lawrence Says:

Gabbert and Trask would each go about 500. With this team.

  30. M. Steelman Says:

Been following my boy Tom Brady since michigan very closely.Actually was shocked when he went all the way to the 6th in the draft. Tom answered a question from a reporter after SB #5 I think. And he said he wanted a ring for every finger. Wasn’t concerned about rings for the thumbs. I expect if he gets his 8th this year,he will play next yr to fill his contract and play to the age of 45.. if he does sign a new contract,it will be to take pressure off the Bucs cap. So they can either make a run For 2022 and shoot for a 3peat or keep a team together enough for him and Bucs to get thatSB if they fall short this year. He’s (or I should say Giselle) is ready for more time with family and other things.

  31. BucEmUp Says:

If Tom retires you go after Aaron Rodgers, or whatever veteran qb wants a change of scenery at that point or go after a qb who is mobile and is a top prospect. Feel like Trask was a wasted pick but time will tell

  32. Hodad Says:

He said he was going to play until he was at least 45. Joe, why don’t you believe him? Even if we win the S.B. this year you think Tom walks away from the chance to three peat? You don’t know Brady.

  33. SufferingSince76 Says:

Why don’t we just enjoy the present and not get to far ahead of ourselves. Long time Bucs fans will know what I mean.

  34. JimbobBucsFan Says:

Tom Brady, Gronk and AB are all “past their prime.” Who says so? How about Bruce Arians and Tom Moore. Too old? Should Jason Licht think about retiring now and “going out on top”?

Even JBF’s “Sage”, should he be “pushed out”?

What have they all got in common? They are having the time of their lives. They are all living their dreams. Who is to say when someone else should retire?

  35. Oneilbuc Says:

The only reason why yall down talk Trask is because the national media and Ira Kaufman never pumped him up like they do other quarterbacks . Trask has better numbers than Brady, Lawrence , Feilds, and others and he played against better competition with lesser talent on his offense. The only name yall know is Pitts and Tony wich he was a average receiver in Florida. Rogers and Wilson are not coming to Tampa so give that dream up. Yall need to stop with hoping for other teams legendary quarterbacks and hope the bucs can develop their own. You should be optimistic about Trask because he’s learning behind your goat remember??

  36. Tc Says:

Actually, i think jameis comes back if brady did indeed retire with back to back superbowls. He is only on a 1 year deal with saints. Lol.

  37. Gilly Gil Says:

This whole article was a buncha far fetched speculation of worries being spoke out.. Possibly the worst article ive ever seen on here.

  38. LakelandSteve Says:

If we win the Super Bowl this year that’s 2 in a row. Brady wants to go down in history and do something special like win 3 Super Bowls in a row. He has chased it before and not gotten there. If we win again this year there is no way Brady leaves. He wants three in a row, you can bank on it.

  39. Anonymous Says:

Put Trask in let him turn up

  40. SB~LV Says:

When Brady leaves , Katie bar the door!
Even if Trask lights it up when given a few games under his belt . A lot of players will rightfully so going for the biggest contract.

  41. G in MA Says:

Go for Rogers and count MVP’s . Watch his interviews, that’s all he cares about ! He plays for himself. He wouldn’t trade an MVP or 3 for a SB . GOOD LUCK with him.
