“The Bucs Pass Defense Was So Bad… “

September 27th, 2021

Pass defense wasn’t funny.

A masked comedian takes the stage at the red velvet-lined lounge at the Vero Beach Ramada Inn where Freddie Martino once starred, grabs the microphone and begins his act, “The Bucs pass defense was so bad yesterday… “

And as if on cue, the eight people in the lounge nursing their Canadian Clubs and glasses of bumpyface Seagrams vodka respond, “How bad was it?”

“Let me tell you,” the Uber-driver-by-day begins…

A spectacular game was had yesterday by salad-bar-hating, park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, handshake-stiffing, jet-ski-losing, biscuit-baking, tequila-shooting, smartphone-phobic, waffle-grilling, trophy-throwing, roller-coaster-scared, numbers-rules-peeved, helmet-tossing, football-punting, Bucs-Super-Bowl-winning quarterback Tom Brady.

But the defense for the Bucs was so p!ss poor, not even Brady could carry the team.

Jenna Laine of ESPN has details.

Joe supposes the answer to this is that if a quarterback plays long enough, he’ll see just about everything.

The Bucs have a fantastic offense. But something pretty damn quick has to fix this defense or all the effort and Team Glazer loot it took to retain 22+1 starters from the Super Bowl champions of last year will quickly go up in smoke.

If the greatest of all time has one of his greatest games and still loses, Houston Bucs defensive coordinator Todd Bowles, you’ve got a problem.

… And then the mysterious comedian back in Vero Beach finishes this story on the Bucs pass defense with a one-liner that falls flat while he accidentally exposes his true self.

The laugh he can’t suppress is a dead ringer to Jackie “The Jokeman” Martling.

And the panthers are trading for CJ Henderson……getting him for a TE and a third….come on licht we couldn’t give them OJ and a third……………….

  2. Pewter Power Says:

To the joes credit they did call for a veteran corner in the off-season which most fans felt we didn’t need. Bucs focused on bringing everyone back but from what I saw they didn’t focus on keeping the best players. Prime example Steve McClendon gives us absolutely nothing and didn’t have to earn a roster spot. Cockrell is not old he’s just slow and earned a spot because he played well at safety where they’ll never play him.

Bucs did not try to get better in the off-season and that’s on licht and BA.

  3. Natron Says:

Bucs are double baggers this week

  4. @MidAtlanticBucsFan Says:

If it weren’t for the dead ringer to Jackie “The Jokeman” Martling, I’d have thought the masked comedian was none other than pill-popping, Natty Boh-binge-drinking, Rojo-peeved, Trask-bashing, meltdown-having @Medicated Pete!

  5. Winny Testaverde Says:

Henderson would be an interesting prospect…I’m guessing he’s high dollar ( 9th overall pick ) and has looked the part of a bust so far.

  6. Rico 210 Says:

Bucsbro why, why would we trade any players to the stinking panthers… are you serious?
Anyway I was calling for the
20-0 till it ain’t so. Today’s sucks lmao. Been awhile
    Go Bucs

  7. Rob In Land O Lakes Says:

The smart move would be to figure a way to get Stephon Gilmore (who wants out of New England). He’ll be available to play by Week 7. He wants a long term deal and guess what? Good GM’s (like ours) figure out a way to get it done.

Folks, the cap will go up in 2022, and there are a number of vets who will not be back. Sherman and anyone on the street will be a band -aid.

  8. tampabuscsbro Says:

    Rico……………………………………………………………………………

CJ Henderson is on the Jaguars. The Panthers are trading for him using a TE and a third.

  9. PSL Bob Says:

The defense could have salvaged the day. A dropped right-in-your-hands Pick 6 would greatly have changed the momentum of the game as would have a recovered fumble that Whitehead forced. We couldn’t stop their passing game so we needed turnovers and the D fell flat on that count. And what the hell happened to our vaunted pass rush?

  10. lambeau Says:

Gilmore wants $20 M per; you can’t have him and Carlton Davis. I would have liked CJ Henderson, but at least that takes the Panthers out of the Sherman market.

  11. zzbuc Says:

Joe, where is all the ball hawk form last week? Where are all the extraordinary CB we have, and all the hype around Carlton Davis, that you´ve been writing for several months? Some here warned you all that stuff wasn´t accurate, is not about just cold stats…..Is about a lot of things….And I will repeat you something some of us at this beautiful site have been saying…The B ucs secondary is average being optimistic…….The minute our front seven do not put pressure on good QB, you will realize that our secondary dont play well in coverage, you will also realize how many tackles they miss….and in both cases sometimes you can include Devin White. The difference is Devin White has a huge amount of talent in some other aspects, not our CB

  12. HC Grover Says:

Forget the SB it is going to be a dog fight to win the division and make the playoffs. 1st things 1st. Issue is in doubt.

  13. Ben green Says:

They look like a poorly coached football team. Stupid penalties, poor tackling, and effort issues are all trademarks. How are you not ready for the Rams, a team that beat you last year with gared fing goff? Listen McVey is a great coach, with a great offense, and they’ll make a lot of teams look like that.. but you have a Superbowl defense, at least on paper. The Rams did what Ben said they’d do. They didn’t even try to run until they had the game in hand. it’s how teams will attack them going forward.

  14. BRYAN KOHN Says:

HAHA Mid Atlantic (regarding Pete). I dont want to say “told ya so” but I knew we were going to get toasted with this group of DB’s. Damn Shame. Better do something fast!!!!

  15. Joe Says:

If you really do follow “cold stats” you will know Carlton Davis is a good corner. But he’s just one man.

There seems to be a belief by many Bucs fans on Twitter that Ross Cockrell and Dee Delaney are the new equals for Darrelle Revis and Todd Bowles just doesn’t know how to use them. Joe trusts you are not a member of this crowd.

  16. zzbuc Says:

If you really do follow “cold stats” you will know Carlton Davis is a good corner. But he’s just one man.

I meant exactly the opposite……Its is NOT just cold stats, is a lot more than that, that´s what I´ve been writing in this place for several months……The biggest flaw on this team is the secondary….When people wrote here 17/0 , we will repeat an all that stuff…… I never bought that, neither Edwards picks 6 frmo last week…..and I am not on twitter, and I am not saying by any means Cockrell and Delaney are the equals of anybody…….I am just sayiong our CB including CDIII have been and actually are average at best……

  17. Defense Rules Says:

There’s no doubt in my mind that this defense is playing poorly right now (#27 defense; allowing 29 PPG average), but we’ve got 2 things going for us. First, we’ve played 3 of the top QBs in the NFL (Prescott’s averaging 76.5% completions; Ryan’s averaging 70.9% and Stafford’s averaging 70.2%). Secondly, we’ve been missing 1-2 starting CBs (SMB then Dean) since the first half of Game 1 & the subs getting playing time can only improve with more snaps. And oh ya, we’re 2-1 at this point.

The QBs we’ll be facing for the next 8 games aren’t as experienced as Prescott, Ryan & Stafford. No ‘automatic wins’ in there to be sure, but at least our defense should have a better chance to come through. Hopefully our offense continues putting up in the neighborhood of 35 PPG & in the process starts controlling the clock better. Both sides of the ball also need to stop shooting themselves in the foot with penalties.

  18. Bucfan81 Says:

Well at least one thing is certain. Bowles won’t be leaving for a head coaching job at the end of the year with the way this defense is playing.

  19. SB Says:

THERE IS STILL NO RAMADA INN IN VERO BEACH JOE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  20. Francesca Lind Says:

The Rams crowd was so loud when the Bucs offense was on the field. I have never heard anything like it? Could it be noise piped in?

  21. Destinjohnny Says:

We have drafted sooo many secondary players lately…
    Where are they all?

  22. Elita Vita Says:

Did we not fear that our past defensive coach Smith would leave and we threw him tons of money to stay. The next year he flopped. I love Bowles but didn’t the Bucs recently extend his contract a couple of years for him to stay. This time I believe Bowles will turn it around…..GO BUCS!!

  23. Rico 210 Says:

    Lol my fault
    Go Bucs

  24. Rod Munch Says:

    Bucs win on offense.

That means stop wasting downs with the run up the middle to start the game. That means going for it on 4th and very short from anywhere on the field.

On defense, Bowles MUST switch it up, bring those alleged ‘exotic’ blitzes that people always give him credit for. You can’t just sit in a 4-man rush all day, NEVER have it work, and just keep doing the same thing. Go for broke, bring the house, if you get burned, you get burned, but at least when you down swinging. it’s a lot better than the passive slow brutal death we watched.

  25. gus georgiou Says:

If we don’t get at least 2 more DB’s real quick, this is going to be a long season watching opposing teams throw for 400 yds on us every week. Losing Bunting and Dean was a blessing in disguise as those 2 were brutal trying to cover receivers giving them minimum 5 yard cushions every pass. Bringing in unknown college DB’s who didn’t get drafted can be no worse than watching our d backs try and cover people!

  26. Ash Says:

Geez step off the ledge it was one game and a very tough team that is in the discussion of top team in the NFL we lost by 10 points with an injury riddled secondary didnt play lights out with delany a third string corner back starting in the third game of the season calm down trading players with zero trade value ain’t the answer you ain’t gonna get a savior sorry they will figure it out they did last year they will again

  27. unbelievable Says:

    lol SB

  28. Mr Bean Says:

Ben Green of Harvard. I agree. Bad coaching. Stupid penalties. Bad tackling. Secondary not there. Pass rush not there. No running game. Special teams sucked. Time to shake off the SB complacency.
