No Surgery For Sean Murphy-Bunting

September 17th, 2021

No surgery expected.

UPDATED 12:33 p.m. – This afternoon in his Friday press conference, held via Zoom, Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians gave an update on the status of cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting.

Arians said SMB, currently on injured reserve, is not expected to need surgery on the elbow he trashed in the first quarter in the win over the Cowboys. Arians said there is still hope the Bucs can get SMB to return this season and the first step toward that goal is knowing that SMB won’t go under the knife.

When SMB could return, Arians shrugged and shook his head and admitted at this point, there is no telling when he can return. However, Wednesday night on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Arians said a 4-to-6 week return is likely if he isn’t lost to surgery for the season.

He’ll be back after the bye

Fantastic, the original 3 week projection sounded way too optimistic. With a little luck he’ll be back in 6 weeks or so.

On a similar note, JPP will likely be available Sunday.

BA does not sound optimistic when he says there is hope he comes back this season

  5. Jmarkbuc Says:

Hope he’s using the time to study how to be a cornerback.

“Arians said there is still hope the Bucs can get SMB to return this season.” Yipes! I had hoped he would only miss a couple of weeks. At least we may have him back later this year for the run up to the SB.

Joe smb did not trash his own elbow as you wrote. Winfield did that

Friendly fire. Joe has written that a few times over the past eight day.

GREAT NEWS! SMB is a big part of the secondary, make no mistake about that. Hopefully he can get back to full participation and readiness by December and the run to the playoffs. A first round bye and a HOME FIELD NFC Championship Game would be VERY cool!

We can count on SMB to push himself as hard as he can. That dude gives all out lights out effort on everything he does.

  11. Erik Says:

Thank god he doesn’t need surgery. I hope he does everything he needs to heal and get back on the field. Hope he has a good therapist to get him back to playing soon.
