When You Have A Loaded Roster

August 25th, 2021

GMs looking at Bucs’ roster.

For the guys that the Bucs will cut to get down to 53 next week, it won’t be all awful news. Some could still live in Florida.

Former Bucs scout and Jets director of player personnel Pat Kirwan had an interesting observation yesterday when talking about Bucs linebackers.

Speaking on his weekday show, “Movin’ the Chains,” heard exclusively on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Kirwan said general managers of bad teams are all closely watching Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht and Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians.

Why is that? Well, like a dog staring at a family while eating dinner, general managers of bad teams will be staring at the Tampa Bay roster ready to pounce at the scraps that fall off the table when Licht and Arians carve the gristle.

Jim Miller: What is there not to like about the Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebackers. A ton of speed and they are tackling demons.

Pat Kirwan: If I have a bad team right now, who do I predict is coming off this [Bucs] roster that can help me?

Well, the first team likely to lap up a guy coming off the Bucs’ roster would be Urban Meyer and Jacksonville, since they were the worst team in the NFL and as such have first dibs on players released.

The next would be the Jets followed by the Dixie Chicks.

So the way Kirwan sees it, a guy let loose by the Bucs would have a decent shot of staying in-state. That’s how highly Kirwan rates the Bucs’ roster.

I’ve been saturated in everything Bucs since the first peseason game in 1976. I cannot ever (nope – not even after spanking the Raiders in our first SB) remember having a problem this good. “Can’t wait!” – Bart Scott

  2. Mort Says:

It’s like on the pod when one of y’all were saying Darden could get cut and end up on PS. Nope. Our roster is so stacked that we will cut good players. Other teams would love to rummage through the garbage looking for a treasure.

  3. Kentucky Buc Says:

Thought that said loaded rooster at first. Do with that what u will. I might’ve had a few drinks.

  4. Joe Says:

    I might’ve had a few drinks.

    🙂 Joe is jealous!

A loaded roster is far better than a loaded goat…an homage to Andy Griffith.

  6. Rayjay1122 Says:

I would be more focused on the Titans roster cuts. Our scraps are far worse than theirs seemingly. We are not getting rid of anyone who can play.

  7. mark2001 Says:

Rayjay..based upon what we have seen from about a dozen guys, I think you are probably right. I don’t think anyone else will likely make the game day roster from another team. But the Practice squad is totally up for grabs, in my mind.

  8. Rod Munch Says:

I think we have about 50 good players – but there’s a pretty big dropoff beyond that. Who gets cut that someone else is going to want?

Tanner Hudson? If you need a pass catching TE, if he gets cut. But he’s a #3 TE who can’t block, so it’s not like he’s at the top of the must have list.

Ryan Griffin? LOL! Not at this preseason.

    RB? No one.

All the WR’s I expect to make it – if anyone gets cut it’s Mickens, who isn’t a good WR and is at the very low end of regular returners.

Anyone on the o-line who could get cut? Nope.

Anyone on the d-line teams would want who might get cut? No.

    At LB? No.

At corner? No one I can think of.

    Safety? Nope.

I’m not bashing the Bucs at all here, but I don’t know who would get cut that anyone else is rushing to get. Literally the only name that might be available is Tanner Hudson.

  9. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

After the embarrassing loss to Jacksonville with our second and third stringers, I am not sure if teams will looking at the Bucs roster cuts.

  10. Tampabaybucfan Says:

What I’m interested in is if they will be anybody we pick up from another team…..I doubt it because we are 32nd in line…..but it’s still possible.

I think we do have some backups that will be picked up.

  11. Buxszntkt Says:

I heard this show today and for the first time ever I heard a national show refer to Lavonte David as an example of a player teams will hope to find as jewels in the rough when cut by whichever team they play now. They were talking specifically about the Jets at the time and their needs.

  12. mark2001 Says:

TBBF…that is for players on waivers. If he is vested, a vet with more than four years I believe, I think he can sign anywhere he wants.

  13. BillyBucoff Says:

Did these guys just watch the last preseason game?
There is a huge dropoff after the top 50 or so. The bottom 20 are trash and I can’t see who would want them.

Cameron Kinley is a great man and I’m thankful for his service but after the stink he made about getting his commitment waived, you would think he could at least be within 2 yards instead of about 3.

Remember why Hargreaves had a ton of tackles?
    Same thing.

Aint no diamonds in the rough we don’t already know about.

  14. BillyBucoff Says:

Our starters are the best in the league but if injuries creep up, it’s not like we are loaded at every position.

A few position groups are stellar of course.
Got me thinking though that our D is gonna flat out win us games this year.
I remember last year when Evans and Godwin were both dealing with injuries to start the season and no AB. Not great.

This year I feel our D and Gio plus a few field goals could win us a game.
Big difference coming this year and we have to fund a way to win them all!!!!!

  15. Defense Rules Says:

I’m surprised that no JBFers have taken a stab yet at what the final 53 will look like. Some have said there are between 30-35 players who literally had made the team before preseason even started. Personally I think that number is closer to 40-45, but hey, who’s quibbling.

Bucs’ starters & key rotational players are pretty much givens IMO. That’s 25 starters plus around 10 key rotational players right there. Then there are several rookies & 2nd year guys who wouldn’t get cut unless they really stunk up the joint in preseason. That’s the 40-45 range. There really weren’t that many jobs up for grabs when preseason started. Got a hunch we’ll see very few surprises when the final 53-man roster is announced. Actually, that’s the way it should be when you’re the Super Bowl champion.

Jaymiss Pick6 Again … fan since preseason 1976.

I was all in after the draft of 1995. Never looked back.

A lot of lean years. A lot of fun ones, too.

    You earned 2020. Well done!

  17. DaBux Says:

I heard that yesterday and laughed. When the hell have we EVER heard that about our beloved Bucs. Damn if it ain’t great to be a Tampa sports fan now.

  18. mark2001 Says:

Jaymis…started in the mid 80’s myself, when I arrived from other regions. Never looked back. Just makes the SB’s all the sweeter, doesn’t it.

  19. Owlykat2 Says:

I am another Fan from the very start who stuck with the Bucs the Bucs through all the bad years!

Not to get off topic, but look at that picture.. that face… it is like the dog is saying…I’m so cute…you love me…just a few tasty bites… oh please…im so cute…. I’m starving…

  21. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I agree that I would be more focused on the Titans roster cuts.
Their reserves just killed our reserves.
Their General Manager Jon Robinson was once our head scout, and is good at finding talent.

    Love the dog pic Joes!

  23. 1sparkybuc Says:

Been a fan of the league since the mid ‘50s. Fan of the Dolphins when they were the only team in the state. Worked on the expansion (electrician) on the sky boxes and the Buccaneer locker room in the old Tampa Stadium. Running out of time, but never been more excited about an upcoming season, not even ‘76 or 2002. Love this team and this site, even with the idiots that pop up every now and then. Retired up in fleagle territory. They still bitch about Ronde Barber. It’s like pouring salt on open wounds every time he visits the area or makes an appearance on TV. I just smile. No need to say anything at all. Go Bucs.

  24. Swampbuc Says:

Sparky – AWESOME, man! You keep chugging brother, perspective is in short supply.

  25. Mike Says:

I agree with many of you that the Bucs do not have good players to be left out, probably due to poor selection of late rounds and unstaffed picks.

  26. Swampbuc Says:

    WHAT?
