“Kicking” Tristan Wirfs’ Arse

August 1st, 2021

Mad praise from Bruce Arians.

Joe couldn’t believe the words that were coming out of Bruce Arians’ mouth. And Bucs fans ought to be excited as hell unless this was an indirect message for Wirfs to quit wearing his Super Bowl ring at night.

Joe has to believe that Wirfs’ rookie play even surprised the Bucs. The first-round pick in 2020 dominated in 19 of the 20 games he played. Rookie? He looked more like an All-Pro.

So when the Bucs’ Super Bowl-winning coach said today that rookie outside linebacker Joe Tryon, in his second day in pads since December 2019, was “kicking” Wirfs’ tail, Joe thought surely Arians was referring to Shaq Barrett and that Joe has misheard the question.

Nope. Arians was talking about Tryon.

Joe was starting to think someone spiked Joe’s Mountain Dew. But alas, it is true. Arians was saying Tryon was handling Wirfs, and then some.

When Arians was asked if Tryon was meeting expectations in Week 2 of training camp, Arians didn’t hold back.

“Oh, more than [met them],” Arians said of the rookie from Washington. “He hasn’t been in pads in, what, two years? He’s whipping a lot of guys’ asses. That says a lot about him. He’s carving out a real, real nice role for himself.”

When Arians was asked if Tryon was using a lot of moves to get the best of Bucs’ offensive linemen, Arians said it would be better to ask the guys whose asses Tryon was “kicking” in practice.

“You should probably ask Tristan [Wirfs] and Donovan [Smith] because he’s kicking their ass pretty good sometimes,” Arians said. “I don’t think he needs any more moves, that’s for sure. Maybe a little more strength, but he’s got plenty of that, too.”

Now remember, last year as a rookie Wirfs gave up one sack the entire season. That was to Khalil Mack who someday might be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. No shame in that.

Also note that Wirfs — as a rookie! — was third in All-Pro voting at right tackle. And Tryon, in only two days with pads on, is beating down Wirfs “sometimes?”

If this is real, that tells Joe that NFC South quarterbacks not named Tom Brady ought to be checking their life insurance policies.

Man, this makes Joe want to take an Uber to Big Storm Brewing and just start chugging pints of Palm Bender. As the late, great Chris Thomas would say, “Holy Flirkingschmidt!”

Maybe a bit of beginners luck mixed w rust from the veterans? I’m glad to hear he’s holding his own early. Keep it up and let’s get a sick rotation this year!

  2. Bird Says:

    Huh?

Man not sure i believe that but we shall find out ourselves this year
Cause not sure shaq or jpp really kick wirfs arse
Not sure many people on this planet kick his arse period

    Wirfs is hulk

  3. Pine Hills Says:

    Somebody pinch me.
    I must be dreaming.

  4. Pine Hills Says:

If he’s really that good do NOT play him in preseason!!!!!!!

  5. SOEbuc Says:

And Khalil Davis ceiling is continuing to rise. He is looking good and apparently ran over Ali today. We could already have a really good front four for the future with Shaq, Tryon, Davis, Vea.

  6. Bucs&Bolts Says:

Man I can’t wait for preseason to start we should see a good amount of tyron then

  7. Mike Says:

Yeah, this is exciting news! You can NEVER have enough pass rushers! Imagine having 3 guys who could get 10+ sacks from the edge? That would be something!

  8. DaBux Says:

Until it’s for real, it’s just camp.

I’ll wait to see Joe against other teams in real games to judge this. Brady will make sure Wirfs and Smith get their act in gear.

  9. Miller5252 Says:

Let’s hope Wirfs is just letting the rookie get some confidence before he puts him through the turf. We don’t need Wirfs to have a sophomore slump, he needs all pro first team this year. It would be great to see those 3 outside linebackers switching on and off giving everyone rest and giving QB’s nightmares! Just reach the kid how to tackle and NFL QB so he doesn’t get kicked outta games and fined all the time.

I’m sure BA’s statements are relative and meant to motivate good play and effort. That’s about all i would read into it.

  11. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Maybe this isn’t underwear football, but these are underwear comments.

  12. Todd Says:

    Tryon will earn 20 sacks…

    …in the first three games.

    Or something. 😎

  13. #1bucsfan Says:

I hope he turns out to be jpp n Barrett but better

  14. gp Says:

If he truly is beating Wirfs, whom we all know is arguably the best in the league, this bodes well for our pass rush for years into the future.
    Just food for thought…
It appears that the record for consecutive double digit sack seasons to start a career stands at 9 seasons and is held by Reggie White, “The minister of defense”

  15. Tampabaybucfan Says:

So….all this “rust” Tryon has….is actually counteracted by low mileage!!!

  16. gp Says:

    Quietly building a “Dynasty” defense.

Nothing to see here folks, move along, move along.

  17. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

    Sure, siure.

  18. Bojim Says:

BA is just being a smart head coach. I am excited though.

  19. DoooshLaRue Says:

I’m sure Wirfs will fix it.
    Donnie?
    😂😂😂

  20. Georger Says:

I can see Todd kicking Jpp inside than you have Shaq Tryon and Vea

  21. Wild Bill Says:

Arians blowing smoke up their ass. Watch the rookie get ass kicked next practice.

  22. MadMax Says:

Nice! We’ll really see once pre season starts…but you know our O line is saving their strength for the real battles…all good though, builds the rooks confidence.

  23. PassingThru Says:

BA might also be calling for Wirfs and Smith to ratchet up the intensity, and not be shown up by a rookie pass rusher.

It’s camp, and BA is doing what it takes to get the troops ready.

  24. Mike Says:

The OL will adapt, ifTryon is still good next week, he is a steal of this draft

  25. Crickett Baker Says:

I can’t wait to hear about the Bucs practice with the Titans! If still on, that should happen in a few days. We should get a huge glimpse of the future then..

  26. SB~LV Says:

    Lol .. coaching 101
Nothing to see here, move along folks

  27. sasquatch Says:

Tryon is going to win some reps because of his physical gifts. Whipping someone’s ass is just a phrase. Not worried about Wirfs or Smith.
