“I Am On Record As Saying Kellen Mond Or Kyle Trask Will Be Better Quarterbacks Than Zach Wilson”

August 14th, 2021

Shaun King on Bucs QBs.

Former Bucs quarterback Shaun King has a new job. But he has the same strong takes.

King, after spending a few years as an assistant coach with South Florida, coaching at IMG and interning as a coach with the Stinking Panthers this spring in his post-playing days, has returned to his sports talk roots and is co-host of “The Night Cap.” King’s show can be heard and seen weeknights on VSiN, which is a sports gambling-focused OTT radio/TV network, also carried 24/7 on SiriusXM.

King has moved to Las Vegas where VSiN is based in the Circa sportsbook.

Like King did for BSPN, for NBC Sports Network and for local radio, he continues to deliver pointed opinions for listeners.

As part of a marketing push to announce his hiring with VSiN, King, one of only four quarterbacks to lead the Bucs to an NFC championship game, appeared with Joe’s good friend Jason McIntyre of FOX Sports on his podcast, “Straight Fire” to talk football and pimp his new show.

King discussed his time with the Bucs and admitted he’s jealous of the money career NFL backup Chase Daniel has pocketed for doing nothing in the NFL. King said if he could, he would trade his season as part of the Bucs’ first Super Bowl season for Daniels’ bench-warming ways and his money.

He also talked Bucs quarterbacks, past, present and future, including himself, Brad Johnson, Rob Johnson, Chris Simms, Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, Tom Brady and Bucs rookie quarterback Kyle Trask, too!

King is of the mind that Jets rookie quarterback Zach Wilson was a horrible reach and will be a massive bust for Gang Green.

In fact, King firmly believes Trask will have a better career.

“You can’t tell me that Zach Wilson is the second-best player in this past year’s draft,” King declared with authority. “I am on record as saying Kellen Mond or Kyle Trask will be better quarterbacks than Zach Wilson. Write that down. Write that down.”

OK, Joe did.

The last time Joe heard King state this strongly that a first-round pick of a quarterback was such a lock to blow chunks in the NFL was when the Jags drafted Blaine Gabbert.

As for the Bucs, King likes the chances of Tampa Bay repeating as Super Bowl champs but thinks it is a prayer to expect them to go undefeated. Still, King believes dropping cash on the Bucs to go 20-0 is a nice little wager given the odds. The Bucs, King said, are currently 50-1 to run the table.

“I personally think it is worth, you know, a hundred or $200, just in case,” King said of betting on the Bucs to go undefeated. “Do I think it is likely? No. For one they have to stay healthy. That’s the No. 1 thing. As talented as they are on paper, they have a lot of guys over 30.

“So the question also becomes, if they get out of the gates fast, if they are in a dominant position the last quarter of the season, does Bruce [Arians] rest some of those well-known, established guys? And those are things you can’t control.”

King said he has already laid cash on Bucs repeating as Super Bowl champs.

So Joe recommends if you are going to try the Circa dayclub “Stadium Swim” and its drive-in-theatre-like TV screen to watch games poolside, and if you are still on your two feet by the time King shows up for his show at 7 p.m. Vegas time, say hi to him.

[Not cool! Don’t pull that stunt again. Joe has zero patience for this race-baiting nonsense. — Joe]

  2. Medicated Pete Says:

    It’s a synonym for: Clownery, Bafoonery…..Joe

  3. The Red Mirage Says:

Pete, the definition you give is correct however the entomology of the word is from a disgusting and shameful time in our country’s history and is clearly
    race-bating, you should know better.

  4. Medicated Pete Says:

    Alright then, fair enough

I wasn’t convinced that Zach Wilson was destined for greatness either. I’m not going to criticize his game, he simply left me unconvinced. I never saw him really under fire, except for a couple of clips of that one loss. Most of the time he had outstanding protection and wide, wide open receivers, which means I never saw him under duress, or forced to run through his progressions in order to find his secondary or tertiary receiver. I never saw evidence of him rapidly reading the defense and making adjustments. Maybe he’ll be amazing, but I simply never saw anything that screamed, “SECOND OVERALL PICK”.

I thought Trey Lance and Mac Jones were better prospects.

Zach Wilson = Mitch Trubisky ? We shall soon see.
The NFL will chew you up and spit you out if you do not have the goods.

    GO BUCS!!!!

  7. Buxszntkt Says:

I’ve said it before, the gal Zach is bringing with him to NY is going to leave him wobbly and tired and unprepared !

  8. Rod Munch Says:

Chris Simms went all in Wilson, saying he’d be better than Trevor Lawrence. I know Wilson is off to a slow start, but I’m not writing off anyone before the 2nd week of the preseason. Now, I know that is not what King was saying, but people are quick to jump on bandwagons when it means calling someone a bust.

  9. 1sparkybuc Says:

King never “led” the Bucs anywhere. He was just along for the ride.

  10. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

I didn’t get to see the word but I’m guessing it has nothing to do with bugs.

  11. SB~LV Says:

His he still driving the Jameis bandwagon?

  12. Beeej Says:

Jets would have been better off trading the pick for a few decent players

  13. Winny Testaverde Says:

It’s a long, long way from Provo, UT to The Big Apple. Wilson’s Mom is smoking hot…so there’s that. Hopefully they’ll show her early and often during games.

I will be surprised if Wilson makes it big in New York. We’ll find out…and that’s the beauty ( & Wilson’s Mom ).

  14. Destinjohnny Says:

Mond has no vision, he is a one read or run

  15. Christopher Schiefen Says:

Wilson over Fields is just a classic case of teams overthinking this.

  16. PassingThru Says:

FYI: Manhattan is nothing like Provo, trust me, I’ve been to both. I cannot speak for the boroughs, but the city never sleeps.

But don’t sell Utah women short. The women in Utah are very attractive. You’d be surprised at the sheer number of hotties in SLC and Provo, especially on the BYU campus.

  17. Tc Says:

Too much pressure. New York will eat him alive.

  18. Merlin Says:

TRM, he does know better, and does it anyway. Telling

  19. Eddie Marz Says:

I bet. Zach Wilson’s mother does better in New York than him.

  20. Buczilla Says:

Before the draft I heard rumors that Wilson is an entitled d-bag with meddlesome parents. Any qb going to the jets is going to struggle regardless. Manning coming out of college would struggle mightily with that organization.

  21. Rod Munch Says:

People calling him a bust and it’s not even week 2 of the preseason. LOL! Same dopes were saying Rojo was a bust in the 3rd quarter of the 1st preseason game in Cincinnati.

  22. Walter Foltz Says:

Shaun may be right or maybe Shaun just thinks it will make himself look smarter by kicking the rookie quarterback down further after one or two bad practices in preseason.
