Statgirl Now Views Carlton Davis Very Differently

July 28th, 2021

Change of … software?

Well, well, well. How quickly stats change when you win.

Joe is on record saying it’s doubtful that NFL Network’s resident statgirl, Cynthia Frelund (she doesn’t look like a stat geek), watches few games and maybe none at all. Why does Joe say that? Because in her various analyses, she never speaks of physical matchups, only stats.

Physical mismatches, not numbers, determine games.

And Frelund, who famously referred to the Bucs’ cornerbacks entering the 2020 season as the worst in the NFL, wouldn’t publish something so asinine if she actually watched the Bucs’ final four games or so of 2019.

Interestingly, Bucs corner Carlton Davis discussed this week how Frelund dissed him and his fellow Gravediggers. Davis said last year’s Super Bowl outcome should prove how offbase Frelund was.

And like magic, now this pops up.

Yesterday, Frelund came out with her latest story. And guess who she believes will be the most improved player on the Tampa Bay roster? Yup. Carlton Davis. The same guy Frelund mocked a year ago.

Over the past two seasons, Davis has forced 34 incompletions — the most among corners. Winning teams need to be able to stop the pass. Last season, there were more pass attempts on first down than ever before, and that number is likely to go up in 2021. So cornerbacks with the ability to disrupt passes — like Davis — will only become more crucial.

Well, Joe can give you a couple of reasons why Davis is likely to have an excellent season, and Joe doesn’t need a statsheet.

First is, Davis will be a free agent after this season. You know, a contract year? Davis wants to make bank next spring. The second is about his team. The Bucs, with a somewhat soft schedule, should be up by at least two scores in the fourth quarter each week. Maybe more.

So what will teams have to do to catch up? Throw. More passes = more opportunities for Davis to make plays.

This really isn’t rocket science. Unless you don’t watch games.

I think you’re right about her.

Most improved……a dubious honor….usually means a player needs to come a long way & CD doesn’t…..I’m hoping the honor goes to Dean or SMB….

It’s impossible to cover 32 teams. Most people suck at covering one

Ummm credibility? Weak. Looks? Hot. Who cares? Nobody.

This is the area I expect the Bucs to improve the most on defense – INTs

I expect our safeties to really ramp up their opportunities to get turnovers. In particular, Winfield. He was learning at the beginning of last year. This year he will set up better and make better reads; the other team will be down and will have to throw more… INTERCEPTIONS!!!

Winning does wonders for perception. I believe Carlton can command nearly 20 million a season on the open market. He deserves it

Davis got better as the pass rush improved.

    Big difference between 2.5 & 4 seconds…

She might be great at algorithms and software. But I’ll bet she would be great with hardware as well…if you know what I mean.

Wonder if she keeps bedroom stats?

  13. CantChangeStupid Says:

Only stat I care about coming from here is the number of reps the tight end gets per game.

Your last sentence is the nail on the head Joe. WATCH THE GAMES! Only fools blindly follow stats. I guess it makes for the fodder that the media chews up because of the sport’s popularity but respect is earned. Earn some by making informed thoughts based on what your eyes see. Not what you read. She gets no pass for her looks which are Meh. Rachel Watson and Kay Adams have just simply set the bar too high.

Mark2001 she’d probably bore you FYI death about bedroom stats.

  16. mark2001 Says:

Hey Dave…after seven plus years of college, considering some of the boring electives I’ve taken, I’ve learn to tune out whatever I need to.

  17. Beeej Says:

    Lol

  18. mark2001 Says:

Of course Dave, I didn’t go to EIU like Joe, where all the classes were interesting and all the girls looked like Cynthia or Kay Adams.
