Overhype

Over-the-top promotion

Ever hear somebody mutter after hearing someone talk nonsense, “The (blank) is getting so deep we’re going to need boots?”

That’s what Joe is thinking here.

Look, Joe loves, loves, loves all the hype surrounding the Bucs this fall. It’s pretty much been that way since it was learned Tampa Bay signed park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, handshake-stiffing, jet-ski-losing, biscuit-baking, tequila-shooting, smartphone-phobic, waffle-grilling, trophy-throwing, roller-coaster-scared, numbers-rules-peeved, Bucs-Super-Bowl-winning quarterback Tom Brady.

And Joe soaks every word in.

There comes a time, however, that the hype gets so think, Joe needs boots. It’s getting ridiculous.

The Bucs host the Cowboys to open the season in primetime on NBC. But when NBC Sports NFL analyst Cris Collinsworth took part in a video last night pimping the game, Joe didn’t expect him to say, “Eh, this game is OK. At least I will be back in Florida where I grew up and went to college.”

Collinsworth, however, took a page from fellow Floridian Danny Kanell and talked about the Bucs-Cowboys like it was a 1970s Cowboys-Steelers Super Bowl.

“I think it’s the best opener we’ve ever had,” Collinsworth said with a straight face.

Really?

When Joe heard Collinsworth say that, Joe’s BS meter went off full blast.

Now Joe hasn’t researched every opener NBC has broadcast to start a season, but is Collinsworth trying to tell his audience they’ve never had a pair of playoff teams from the previous season open the new campaign on NBC in primetime?

Remember, the Cowboys were awful last year and they missed the playoffs.

Collinsworth, as you can see in the NBC Sports video below, stoked the fires how the Cowboys defense will be born anew because they drafted middle linebacker Micah Parsons. That dude’s head is going to be swimming with all of the Bucs’ superior weapons.

Parsons has never seen anything like the Bucs will put on the field, surely not in the Big Ten… the last time Parsons played was 2019; he sat out last year.

Don’t con Joe with this crap that Parsons will play like Ray Lewis (or even Devin White) in his very first NFL game and first football game of any kind in over a year.

Look, Joe loves the hype and Joe really believes the Bucs, if they play anywhere close to how they played in last year’s playoffs, will absolutely curb-stomp the Cowboys.

The best opener NBC ever broadcast? No need to oversell, Cris. It’s the NFL. Folks will watch. Trust Joe. No need to embarrass yourself like this.

“I think it’s the best opener we’ve ever had,” Collinsworth said…as NBC makes a giant cash payment to his checking account.

I believe that Collinsworth is the devil

Chris Penissworth he looks like a Di*k and is a Di*k. He is the worst broadcaster to ever sit in the booth.

  4. Buczilla Says:

Unless Salma Hayek and and Halle Berry are mud wrestling at halftime, I don’t get the hype either.

The national sports media is overwhelmingly full of crap. Very rarely watch/listen/read. In fact the less they say about our beloved Bucs the better. Case in point, Peter King. This is a guy that writes his stories as if he’s being paid by the column inch and just can’t keep his whacked-out politics to himself. Then there’s the pre- staged opposing viewpoints shouted back and forth, endlessly. Mindless programming w/ a side of virtue signaling politics. No thanks. I’ll pass and stick w/ local sports coverage. Very little political agenda and a great deal more informative.

Best ever from a ratings standpoint maybe? The cowgirls got their Dak back and sure their defense may not be ready for prime time, but their offense won’t have Andy dalton at the helm anymore. That alone is enough ammo for all their fans nationwide to get overly cocky again and tune in in droves.

Healthy Dak, Zeke, their WRs and that O-line will be a tough test. I expect a 34-27 type of shootout in favor of the good guys and double digit ratings.

It’s time Joe starts believing in “best ever” stories… you’re in one (with the GOAT)!

Best post ever Durango. You nailed it. Avoid the media.

  8. Mike C Says:

Buczilla, two 50 year Olds wrestling at half time? Man the Brady effect is real.

  9. ClodHopper Says:

This specific comment was pretty out there but at the same time this is one of Chris’ strengths. He’s very good at hyping games during the game and making them a bit more exciting. Kinda like a laugh track on sitcoms.

Is that Brees looking real uncomfortable in the top right frame? Lol

  12. Anonymous Says:

It is certainly the best opener for Bucs fans since the Bucs beat the Iggles in 2003 to start their defense of the title.
GO BUCS!!!! 1-0 of the 20-0 journey!!!!!!!

How about Kate Upton v. MJ Acosta-Ruiz. They have the tie in to the sports world and is the real reason we would want to watch.
