Bucs Sign A Stud College Kicker

Not him

Whenever Joe types ”kicker,” circus music still goes off in Joe’s head.

That may be the only stress reaction the Super Bowl win didn’t fully cure.

Yes, Bucs kicker Ryan Succop was a true savior last season, and a superstar in the playoffs. Thankfully, the Bucs paid him the big bucks it took to bring him back to Tampa this season.

But somehow, and for reasons unknown, Tampa Bay recently signed college football’s top kicker as an undrafted free agent, Jose Borregales out of the University of Miami.

Perfect on extra points last season, Borregales drilled 20 of 22 field goal attempts, including a 57-yarder and all 11 field goal attempts under 40 yards. He was an offseason transfer from Florida International University.

So why would the guy honored as college football’s best kicker join the Bucs when they have an established kicker? Joe can only guess the Bucs told Borregales that he would get plenty of chances to showcase himself in preseason because Succop, who turns 35 in September, is going to be in leg-preservation mode.

Regardless, Borregales sure seems like a quality signing, though hopefully the Bucs have no real use for him.

If he can beat out Succop, then we have a young kicker we can count on for a long time. Succop was good, but there’s no harm in looking for an upgrade

  2. BucDan Says:

Good camp leg, based on the stats.

Is Licht possibly trolling everybody by still picking up kickers? Hehe

Yes they did.. kid has a fierce attitude
Not like Gay who has actual medical physiological issues, something that I would not wish on anyone.

  6. SB~LV Says:

    Footnote
Arroyo had great college stats too.. but didn’t have the mental toughness for the NFL

  7. Nick2 Says:

Oh no please dont do that Jason…..

  8. chris L Says:

i have to way the super bowl win cured that, especially the playoff performance put on by succop. he had some real clutch kicks in all the games.

  9. Al Pastor Says:

I’m assuming he’s going to be on th practice squad because the guy fromFL Atlantic signed w another team… Plus Jason cannot resist kickers as we all know 😂😂❤️

B.A. wants competition at every spot. At least we will get the kicker score card again. I dont see new kid taking Ryan job its just healthy competition.

  11. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Nothing wrong with this.

  12. Mitch Says:

@SB~LV – Roberto also decided to change his kicking mechanics as he entered the nfl which exasperated his mental softness.

Sidenote: Won’t the bucs need a second kicker this year again in case of the sickness? What’s the updated roster rules and regs on that? If someone catches the virus are they still out 10 days?

  13. SlyPirate Says:

Kickers need pressure in practice. I like it.

  14. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Licht should have drafted him in the second round but glad he ended up as a Free agent signing.

  15. SB~LV Says:

Subconsciously every time JL hears that ZZ Top tune he can’t control his urge to sign a kicker 🦵

  16. R.O. Says:

They will also sign a Punter if they haven’t already. Of course they signed him as an extra leg… if he’s good maybe we can stash on the PS. Aren’t PS and rosters expanded this year because of the 17th game?

Absolutely no chance he will replace Succop this year. Succop just got a good three year deal.

Best we can hope for is that he makes the practice squad and doesn’t get signed by another team if he is good.

  18. CChead Says:

If he’s good enough to replace a 35 yo week leg Succop. Why not?

Coincidentally, every time n dawg hears ZZ Top’s song Pearl Necklace he fondles an eggplant while gazing at his JayMiss’s poster.

  21. Swampbuc Says:

Succup has gone full basket case before in his career. Money kickers are money until they’re not. Like golfers. Good to have another leg to keep Succup focused and motivated.

  22. BA4President Says:

Joe, has there ever been a kicker signed by a team for just extra points?? It sounds ridiculous, but if there is a guy who is perfect in the 30 yard range, but sucks at the 40+ yard ones, then the temptation is there.
Extra points can make and break games. People hate to admit that, but it’s true.

  23. PSL Bob Says:

If he performs well in preseason, put him on the practice squad. A good security plan in the event Succop should get injured or come off the rails. You never know with kickers.

  24. Mike Says:

Bucs will likely try to carry him on the practice squad as a backup option in case of injury.

  25. 6throundpick Says:

Never underestimate this position. A kicker can lengthen or shorten the field; win or lose games. Looks like a good one…we’ll see…

  26. SKBucsFan Says:

    Is he Aguayo good?

  27. Buckaroo Boozie Says:

More the merrier.. nothing wrong with competition 👍🏻🍻

    Nothing to see here

  29. All lives matter Says:

He’ll find a home if he’s proficient because good kickers have become an endangered species.

  30. Colin in Canada Says:

If COVID is still an issue next season maybe they will keep a kicker on the practice squad

  31. cmurda Says:

Haha. Dooola. I needed a good laugh. Well done sir.

  32. Pete Says:

Injuries occur…even at the kicker position.
