Bruce Arians Wants Blaine Gabbert Back “Soon”

May 1st, 2021

Wanted man.

This was sure a curveball Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians threw Friday night.

In speaking to the local pen and mic club after the second day of the draft, Arians was asked about unsigned backup quarterback Blaine Gabbert.

Given that the Bucs re-signed No. 3 quarterback and perpetual Bucs reserve signal-caller Ryan Griffin, and the Bucs drafting Kyle Trask in the second round with Gabbert still unsigned, it sure appeared as if Trask or Griffin would be the immediate backup for park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, handshake-stiffing, jet-ski-losing, biscuit-baking, tequila-shooting, smartphone-phobic, waffle-grilling, trophy-throwing, roller-coaster-scared, numbers-rules-peeved, Bucs-Super Bowl-winning quarterback Tom Brady.

Once again, it’s never safe to assume.

Arians said he still wants the Bucs to reel Gabbert back in, and not to drag their feet in doing so.

“I really hope that we can get Blaine done, soon,” Arians said. “And go in and have normal competition. Blaine has proven what he can do for us. So, yeah, hopefully we can get that done soon.”

So, do the Bucs plan on putting Trask on ice like the Packers did this past year after drafting Jordan Love, who was not active for one game in 2020?

Having 4 QBs on the roster will result in less depth somewhere else.

  2. HomerSimpsonRocks Says:

I wonder if the glazers pressure Licht to draft a QB

  3. Medicated Pete Says:

I’m having night terrors about Licht drafting USF’s Long-Snapper today then doing a keg stand

  4. Rod Munch Says:

    NO NO NO!!!

  5. BradyBucs Says:

THEY DRAFTED TRASK FIRST SO TRASK COULD GRAB THAT #11 JERSEY!

Then when they bring Gabbert back he’ll have to change to a different number. 😉

  6. Defense Rules Says:

FortMyersDave … I’d be insane for any team to carry 4 QBs on their 53-man roster. Bucs WILL get Blaine Gabbert deal done, and they WILL keep Trask on the roster (probably inactive every game though like Love was).

Ryan Griffin is ‘only’ making a tad over $1 mil this year. Don’t know if he qualify for the PS, but I don’t expect to see him on the final 53-man roster.

  7. Buc4evr Says:

Yeah looks like Griffin is out if Blaine is re-signed. I can’t see the Bucs carrying 4 QBs, but stranger things have happened with the Bucs.

  8. Alanbucsfan Says:

Gabbert will be the backup and Rex Grossman… un, I mean Kyle Trask will learn.

  9. Roy T. Buford Says:

I am happy with bringing Gabbert back, but not at the expense of Griffin. I know both are aging, and Gabbert has game experience, but he has produced really anything good. If Brady goes down, I’d rather go with the unknown unbounded, than known limited. Griffin is also clearly the better passer at practice in times I’ve been.

  10. 407buc Says:

When Gabbert returns Ryan Griffin will be outta here

  11. Bird Says:

So 4 qbs for what reason?
Competition? They know what griffin and gabbert can do
    That makes zero sense

Brady starter for however long he likes
Trask just draft in second round so he is air apparent when brady retires
Who is the third clip board holder?

  12. Beeej Says:

Either Trask or Griffin wont be on the active roster

  13. DoooshLaRue Says:

    No to Blaine Garage.

  14. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Covid protocol is forcing more teams to carry four QB.

  15. SB~LV Says:

They better “ice” Trask ! Brady’s ego won’t be able to handle Trask looking over his shoulder 😉
Hey it is a crazy game with surprises around every corner on and off the field.

  16. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Arians like to have 4 QBs up thru training camp due to all the throws needed for the 90 players. I see Brady getting more than a few days off during training camp. Plus any injuries that may occur.

  17. Perimeter Blocker Says:

I wander if Trask will take Gabbert’s #11?

  18. m0j0 Says:

They don’t just want to hand the backup job to Griffin. They want him to earn it by beating out Gabbert fair and square, if he can. However it goes, Trask isn’t going to see the field this season.

  19. Hodad Says:

Most teams bring 4 arms to camp, no team carries 4 QB’s into the season. Some of guys are losing your minds over nothing. Tom won’t be throwing till June if then. Trask makes the team do to draft status. Griff, will battle Blaine for the back up job, and the 3rd spot. Go take a nap, it was along two nights.

  20. orlbucfan Says:

No to Blaine Garbage. What does BA see in him?

  21. Alanbucsfan Says:

What does BA see in him? -Orlbucfan

Big guy, good mechanics, fits the No risk it, No biscuit philosophy.

  22. Joe Q Says:

    TB doesn’t need and shouldn’t 4 QB’s. Period!

  23. Capt.Tim Says:

Gabbert is a good QB, who was in a horrible situation.
No QB can win, without a decent line and some weapons.

I think Ryan Griffen should get his shot. Hes been with the “Coaching gurus” for a couple years now!

As I said, Trask was a waste. If you cant make all the throws, you cripple your offense. Thats why no QB hungry team picked him. You dont want to get the fan base excited about a guy who cant cut it.

  24. Howard Cosell Says:

You haters forget that Blaine Gabbert is a Real American

    B-B-B-B-Blaine!!

  25. 40Forever Says:

Is JL taking four QBs with the intention of protecting one of them on the PS?

  26. Kk md Says:

By drafting Trask they are forcing Gabbert to sign a contract at their price. Otherwise they will go into the year with Trask and Griffin. They would prefer to sign Gabbert to be the experienced back up while Trask is behind him. They would cut Griffin as he is getting older and has little game experience. They just don’t want to sign Gabbert for what he is asking.

  27. Truth Says:

Isn’t Ryan Griffin kept on the roster because of his relationship with Cameron Brate? Think about it. Doesn’t that make more sense than anything?

  28. Joe Says:

Isn’t Ryan Griffin kept on the roster because of his relationship with Cameron Brate?

    And Brady.

    #Wingman

  29. Ed Says:

Teams carry AT LEAST 4 QB’s heading into Camp to spread around the passing reps, especially when you have a 44 year old QB, as well as for insurance in the event one of the QB’s gets injured during practice or pre-season games. Ryan Griffin may be the odd man out if no injuries strike before the regular season, as his only guaranteed money in the new contract is a $75,000 Week 1 Roster Bonus!
