Breakout Player: Carlton Davis

May 23rd, 2021

Bucs CB Carlton Davis.

If Joe had to pick a “breakout player” for the Bucs this fall, Joe’s not sure if an established starter comes to mind.

With the Bucs, Gary Davenport of Bleacher Report admits one must be creative because just about every starter was damn good last year.

And in that line of thinking, Davenport, who selected one player from each team to have a “breakout player,” chose Carlton Davis — only because Davis, coming off a strong Super Bowl, could put himself into an elite class of corners.

There’s plenty on the line for Davis after a 2020 season that saw him set career highs in tackles (68) and interceptions (four).

But those stats carry a major caveat: Week after week, Davis was tasked with man coverage against opposing No. 1 receivers. And for the most part, the 24-year-old held his own.

The 2021 season marks the last of Davis’ rookie contract. If last year was his coming-out party, this year offers him a chance to entrench himself as one of the league’s best at a premium position. To earn his first Pro Bowl nod.

Oh, and Davenport gave Joe his new favorite term for the Bucs. Davenport said a Super Bowl champion returning all 22 of its starters is “rude.”

Joe likes rude. 🙂

Jeff, just do whatever the government and big pharma tell you. They’re just here to help. No really. Stop laughing everybody.

I was telling all my friends at the start of last season that we had one of the best secondaries in the league, and that the poor/average ratings were based upon the WHOLE of 2019, not just the last half, where they shined. Gotta admit, I expected more to start off, but they took off mebbe midway thru the season

Tough call, but if “break ouy” is measured by overall improvement from last season, CD is already at a high level. I would go with SMB, whose head readers were calling on a platter around the bye week (me included). His playoff performance, if it were continue, would put him in the pro bowl.

Hoping to see some commemts about football and devin whites play on the field but nope. All about Jeff

Davis is definately the best the trio, but both SMB and Dean has a higher ceiling than Carlton Davis due to their speed.

While a case can be made that Davis is a shutdown corner, I feel like the two CBs has the speed to be a top five. Let see if they can pick up the game like Davis has. In either case, we might have the best trio WRs and trio CBs this year.

I have had Covid twice. Once in Dec 2019 when nobody knew what it was. I got the AB test in February is how I know I had it. Then I caught it again in November 2020.
My body is developing it’s own vaccine thank you very much.
I will leave that experimental man made stuff to the rest of the world

[Really not sure what any of this has to do with Carlton Davis being a breakout player. Please don’t hijack threads like this. Thanks. — Joe]

Davis “broke out” the last 1/3 of the season. It’s like a light switch flipped on. I think Dean also broke out. As did SMB.

I think the team is solid in the DBackfield, the most challenging position an NFL defense, especially since they can’t whack receivers like Lynch used to. Opening up the middle by protecting receivers—once upon an NFL time receivers feared for their lives in the middle—also opens up the outside where CBs are on an island.
