“This Guy Is A Freak”

April 5th, 2021

Penn State DE Jayson Oweh.

Now recently a pass rusher came on Joe’s radar because the guy seems too good to be true. And maybe he is?

That would be Penn State pass rusher Jayson Oweh. He’s very green as a football player in that he played only two full seasons at Penn State. Last year Oweh had no sacks. Zilch. As a redshirt freshman in 2019, Oweh had five sacks in 11 games.

Just on face value with his numbers, Oweh seems like a second-day draft reach or a third-day draft project.

However, his pro day performance may have put him in the first-round conversation. At 6-5, 237-pounds he ran a 40-yard dash in 4.39 seconds. Consider that Lavonte David at his combine ran a 40-yard dash in 4.57.

Noted analyst Greg Cosell of NFL Films is one of the more respected X’s and O’s guys out there. That’s why he is in such demand on various sports shows. Cosell is not one given to hyperbole, but he is fully sold on Oweh as a high-level NFL prospect.

Cosell, recently appearing on the “Ross Tucker Podcast,” dismissed the concern over the lack of sacks by Oweh at Penn State. Cosell noted Danielle Hunter of the Vikings, who has 48.5 sacks the past four seasons in Minnesota, had a total of 4.5 sacks in his final two seasons at LSU.

“This guy is a freak,” Cosell said enthusiastically of Oweh. “He is, athletically, off the charts. I really don’t think he really knows, yet, how to rush the quarterback.”

And that’s where Bucs defensive coaches come in. Joe pointed out a story over the weekend where an NFL thinktank ranked Bucs defensive line coach Kacy Rodgers among the five best assistant coaches in the league. Wherever Rodgers, a Bill Parcells disciple, has been a defensive line coach, that team has had a pass rush.

Let’s just say if Oweh is still there at No. 32 — Joe has seen player rankings with him listed in the high-30s — Joe would have zero problem with Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht taking a chance and letting the Bucs assistants groom him.

Penn State did have a historically bad season last year.

  2. ncbucsfan Says:

The pic of #11 is the linebacker Micah Parsons!

  3. Jaymiss Pick6 Again Says:

Disagree with you Joe. He seems like a workout warrior without much on the field production. Isn’t he the guy that number cruncher Cynthia Frelund projected to the Bucs based on her analytic models?

  4. Sport Says:

    Looks like a worthy project.

Can we agree the 40 time (especially compared to David) should be a lower tier metric.

How fast was JPP, Barret, I’m guessing slower.

Does he have the fortitude to go through the health issues JPP has had and play at that level?

Does he have the dedication of Barret to learn the craft and execute on a daily basis?

    If so I’m in.

Contrary to some old-timey statements,, you can teach speed, on the margins (tiny improvement). Just ask any draft pick in the last 5 yrs.

    In BA I Trust!

  5. Cobraboy Says:

I love Big Ugly freaks. A human that big and that fast defines “freak.”

  6. Hodad Says:

At 32 I’d prefer a sure bet. Trade back and grab him OK.

  7. doolnutts Says:

Not an awful idea. We would not be relying on him he would be the replacement for JPP whenever that time comes. It would be a great time for him to learn from both JPP and Shaq.

  8. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I really like this Penn State product, and hope he is still there, when we pick.
I just have a funny feeling he will be gone by the time we pick.

  9. Bucnjim Says:

But does he love football or just the thought of making money? This is the mistake the Raiders seem to make every draft. They fall in love with track stars!

  10. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

    Booker Reese?!?!

  11. Bradinator Says:

For some reason this guy never seemed to reach his potential in college. I have ceased to watch The Combine. While it provides amusement for the off season, any GM with a lick of sense doesn’t put too much stock in this stuff. game film and actual production are really everything. This is just a fun distraction while we wait for The Draft (aka “The High Holy Days” of my religion. )

  12. windbaggery Says:

Workout warrior without production. Oh great…

  13. Ben green Says:

Don’t get excited over your thirtysecond draft choice. Take a shot on a guy that falls. When ur drafting at the bottom of every round you should be taking risks. After all you’re taking everyone’s sloppy seconds and thirds. The bucs haven’t been in this position before, at least not with current management. Take shots and f#$& the future, your qb is 44 in august. Plenty of time to rebuild in 2025

  14. Mike Says:

I think straight line speed at DE is not worth much. You need agility, knee bend, strong hand fighting, quick first step / snap anticipation / get off, etc. but straight line speed, not so much.

  15. SlyPirate Says:

“Looks like Tarzan. Plays like Jane.”
    -W Sapp

The Raiders used to draft guys just because they were insane athletes. Never worked.

  16. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Joe,

For a guy the screamed to the rooftop about how unproductive – our 2nd round draft pick Ronald Jones was his first two seasons. I don’t understand why you would be so enamored with the BUCS selecting a non productive pass-rusher with out 1st pick.

  17. LUVMYBUCS Says:

For a guy *that screamed to the rooftop about how unproductive – our 2nd round draft pick Ronald Jones was his first two seasons. I don’t understand why you would be so enamored with the BUCS selecting a non productive pass-rusher with *our 1st pick.

  18. Buc1987 Says:

You don’t draft projects in the first round silly goose.

  19. firethecannons Says:

isn’t this another situation where Warren Sapp’s comment applies; you don’t pump weights on 50 yard line? you don’t run a 4.39 on your way to the quarterback?
we’d probably get Noah Spenced with this pick.

  20. Godlovesbucs Says:

Reminds me of barkevious mingo. Superfreak, but very undersized. Also has the production of taco charleton. I have been wrong before tho.

  21. Joe in Michigan Says:

I like other edge rushers in the draft more than Oweh. That said, if Todd Bowles thinks this guy has the bend and will learn pass rush moves from Shaq and JPP, I wouldn’t badmouth the pick.

  22. NDog is an idiot Says:

Agree w Ghost!! Booker Reese volume 2 all too possible! Go with Game Tape , not exercises !! Looks like Tarzan…, plays like Jane!

  23. Erick Says:

Pass. Guy is only being considered in the 1st round because he is a workout warrior. No thanks.

  24. Erick Says:

1st round- Daviyon Dixon DL Iowa or Azeez Ojulari Edge Georgia

2nd round- Quinn Meinerz IOL Wisconsin Whitewater

  25. Louis Friend Says:

Take any analyst (or armchair GM, hell even paid GM’s) with a grain of salt. Cosell is the same guy who stated with certainty that RG3 was a better QB than Andrew Luck in 2012. Among other colossal misses.

  26. Louis Friend Says:

To be fair to Cosell since I didn’t include this in the previous post – he did say he wouldn’t take Winston #1 in 2015. He said there were too many flaws in his on the field play for him to deserve the top spot. On that one I give him huge props since everyone else was focused on his off the field issues exclusively.

  27. Daren Says:

Noah Spence was quite the gifted athlete who worked out but didn’t quite work out …

  28. Ash Says:

    Lol this is funny

  29. Daren Says:

Wasn’t Noah Spence described in the same way?

  30. Elita Vita Says:

At # 32 Bucs hopefully take Najee Harris just like the Chiefs took Clyde Edwards Hellaire last year at #32.

  31. Joe in Michigan Says:

Noah Spence ran a 4.80, that wasn’t/isn’t impressive at 251 pounds.

  32. Buczilla Says:

It’s refreshing to have good coaching again, but man, zero sacks is tough to swallow. I’m not flipping out if we pick him, but I’d prefer someone with some more production. To me, he looks like one of our classic “looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane” picks. Eric Curry, Charles McRae, Keith McCants, etc. are still fresh in my age addled brain.

  33. Joe in Michigan Says:

Man, I thought Eric Curry was gonna be good. Not at all.

  34. Costa Rica John Says:

At 237 lbs he needs to put on quite a bit of weight to hold the edge. I’m thinking the speed goes down with the extra weight.
Maybe at the end of the 2nd round.

  35. Joe in Michigan Says:

I think Oweh weighed 257 at Penn State’s pro day, when he ran the 4.39, that’s what I saw, anyway.

  36. David Says:

He had no production in college. He’s an athlete at this point, nothing more. Maybe he can learn behind JPP & Shaq, with Bowles there.

I like the DE from Texas. He’s an athletic freak also but he had production

  37. Joe in Michigan Says:

David: I agree, I’d rather have the Bucs draft Joseph Ossai. My gut feeling, though, is that Licht and Arians are in love with 2 prospects right now, Landon Dickerson and Quinn Meinerz. Both probably 2nd Rounders, one of those guys will be a Buc, IMHO.
