Hidden Secret Of Tom Brady

April 22nd, 2021

Tom Brady walks off field after Super Bowl pregame warmups.

There is a hidden Tom Brady few have seen.

Sure, we know the damn greatness of the park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, handshake-stiffing, jet-ski-losing, biscuit-baking, tequila-shooting, smartphone-phobic, waffle-grilling, trophy-throwing, roller-coaster-scared, Bucs-Super-Bowl-winning quarterback.

But in an appearance on Kyle Brandt’s podcast, also seen on The Ringer, Bucs receiver Chris Godwin shared a story few knew about Brady.

Godwin explained that Brady never gives any sort of a pregame pep talk. It is usually Bucco Bruce Arians. Then Arians is followed by either Devin White or Lavonte David before the Bucs hit the field.

Just before kickoff of the Super Bowl, however, that changed.

“BA always gives a speech,” Godwin said of Arians. “But he’s not a big rah-rah guy. He just kind of says his piece. And then typically it is Devin [White] or Lavonte [David] that talks throughout the season.”

This time, as the Super Bowl was minutes away, both White and David spoke. Then, one more guy wanted to speak. Brady.

“They both said their thing,” Godwin said of David and White. “And then Tom says, ‘Yo,’ I’ve got to say the last word.’ And then he gives this epic speech.”

Godwin said the entire locker room was locked in on Brady. First, because he never had given a pregame speech to his Bucs teammates. The second reason? It was Tom freaking Brady talking.

“I think it hit a lot harder because, like, he didn’t give any pregame speeches throughout the year,” Godwin said. “That tells you how big the moment is, when Tom gets up there and gives this legendary speech.

“We were all ready to go.”

Godwin didn’t offer specific details other than to say Brady was so passionate, it was clear he was speaking from the heart. Brady spoke about honoring themselves with stellar play to win the game, Godwin said, and that honor would not only change their lives but carry them into history. With a win, they will leave a football legacy that even their grandchildren someday will talk of: the night their grandfather won a Super Bowl with the Bucs.

Joe sure hopes someone with the Bucs or NFL Films captured that moment. If so, why haven’t we seen it yet? Godwin talked like he was starting to get fired up just recounting the moment.

There was one thing that did not happen when Brady was finished. Brandt asked Godwin if Brady, upon completion of the speech, ate a “W?”

Godwin said that did not happen.

Can’t imagine a better motivator than Brady.

  4. August 1976 Buc Says:

Hey KC, like Tom says, Actions speak louder than words, But Goat Tom has got the words TOO!! And the Hardware- 7 Lombardi’s. And by the way Tom is 2-0 in the postseason against Mahome boy. lolololol GO BUCS!!!!!!

  5. mark2001 Says:

Hard to believe, but some time ago some posters actually said that leadership, culture and coaching to develop young talent weren’t very important. The guys were professionals, and didn’t need those things. And that those saying such things were just raising red herrings, to distract from our poor talent and the real reason for annual losing. In fact, they are always important.. in Sports…in Business…and almost everywhere.

I watched that interview and the thing that captured my attention is when Godwin said he was planning his wedding for May and he automatically thought the season would be over by January like normal years of the lost decade. The past five years with Mr Entertainment has been brutal for the fans but just think about how frustrating it was for guys like Godwin, Evans and Lavonte. Thank you Mr Brady for bringing your winnings ways and your killer instinct attitude………GO BUCS!

  7. Medicated Pete Says:

I’d eat my way thru a dog park lawn to get my hands on that speech

  8. 813bucboi Says:

and folks thought the previous QB was a leader…lol…

    GO BUCS!!!!

  9. Anonymous Says:

A real leader can left an entire organization to win a Super Bowl and it can happen again. Go Bucs

  10. Gofortheface30 Says:

Bird – you nailed it. I’m 42 and have a soft spot for the 98-2002 Bucs, and will always have a soft spot. Nostalgia and all. But let’s be real – the 03 Bucs team was pretty awful (in hindsight)while this post Super Bowl team has the look of 15-2 written all over it and frankly the look of a team that isn’t just a run of the mill Super Bowl contender- but HISTORICALLY good. Now… a lot can happen to be sure, but if the Bucs manage to secure home field advantage for the whole playoffs – then forget back to back, this Bucs team would already be so so far and away better than that 02 team, and if (big if) they go back to back then forget comparing to other Bucs teams, now you’re talking 90s cowboys, 80s niners etc and you better believe Brady and everyone else will be thirsty for 3 peat

  11. BA4President Says:

The fact that Brady knew to hold it back until the Super Bowl is wild. Not the division round, not the NFC championship game, but he kept that speech inside him until the biggest moment of all. Just an absolutely insane level of self discipline.

When he retires, this dudes’ career is going to read like a tall-tale. Except it’s all true.

  12. Youngbucs Says:

Man it feels good to have a real leader and true face of a franchise!!!

  13. SufferingSince76 Says:

Once again you can not overstate the importance of Tom Brady to this team, regardless of what the naysayers think.

  14. Buc1987 Says:

    Stay tuned.

    More to come.

  15. Casual Observer Says:

    Suffering – Well said.

  16. PSL Bob Says:

Been a Bucs fan since its inception and have never gone into a season with this level of confidence. And, it’s all because of the GOAT. We had great players to compliment him, but his motivation and leadership is what elevated the team to the top.

  17. fern Says:

The guy picked a team and it goes to SB.
I don’t care what everyone else has done & said whatever.
    GOAT simple as that

  18. Onetrickpony Says:

    Got scared for a minute.
I thought of the words crab eating, was coming.

  19. Mike pizzoli Says:

Brady has given a version of that speech before super bowl 49 against the Seahawks and there is a recording of the speech. He talked about how if they win this game you are honored and your families are honored it was a great speech then and Im sure this one was no different

  20. Hodad Says:

The legend grows. Have to laugh at all the naysayers when Brady was signed. To think fans we don’t hear much from anymore wanted Jameis back at 30 million a season. If that had happened, Jameis would be eating $ signs, and the Bucs would’ve been eating L’s. Arians was brought in to turn JW’s career around. Thank you Jason, and the Glazers for pulling the plug on what I believe was BA’s call.

  21. AtlBuc Says:

imagine Brady coaching a team. He should’ve win the era of player/coaches.

  22. LISTNFRMAFAR Says:

All this behind the scenes stuff was stifled by Belichick.

  23. Howard Cosell Says:

Thank you Jason, and the Glazers for pulling the plug on what I believe was BA’s call.

Howard thinks you’re not paying attention:
Arians obviously was lukewarm at best about Winston the 2019 season.
Howard believes Arians is the one who pulled the plug on Jameis.
The Glazers, bless their Sb winning hearts, are the ones who clung to McCoy as the face of the franchise for 5 years.
However after 2019 even they were done w/ Winston.
Arians probably had as easy sell

  24. Howard Cosell Says:

Howard would take it one step further and say Arians led the charge to dump Winston

  25. Johnny o Says:

hi kids: when you think about it, the only thing better than tom telling everyone how important and epic it will be to perform well in the super bowl, was tom going to every player after the game and telling them how proud he was of them and how happy he was for them. go Bucs!

  26. Oneilbuc Says:
