Can Dan Mullen Continue His NFL QB Streak?

April 30th, 2021

Gators coach Dan Mullen.

Florida coach Dan Mullen has a mixed bag of his quarterbacks in the NFL.

One quarterback, once he found the right system, was a solid starter and a damn good leader (Alex Smith). Another is the second-highest paid in the NFL and leads America’s Team (Dak Prescott).

Then there are others. Tim Tebow was horrible as an NFL quarterback. About the only pass he completed in the NFL happened to beat the Steelers in a playoff game. And don’t get Joe started on Chris Leak.

So it seems Mullen’s quarterbacks are either downright terrible or are franchise quarterbacks. Boom or bust.

Which will Mullin disciple Kyle Trask be for the Bucs? Given the coaching staff and talent surrounding him, Joe figures Trask has a big leg up on most of the other Mullen quarterbacks.

Could you at least tell us non college watching fans who you’re referring to?

  2. SB~LV Says:

A 64 pick on QB is not expensive other than the pick could have been used on another position that would contribute this year. Remember how much success JL has had with 2nd round picks 🤭

  3. August 1976 Buc Says:

Perfect QB storm environment for a rookie QB to learn in Joe. “The Tampa Bay QB Incubator” He will have every chance to excel, but time will tell. lol He will have Brady on speed dial for his career lol. Not a bad luxury for a young QB to have. GO BUCS!!!!!

  4. FortMyersDave Says:

Time will tell Joe. I guess the Bucs anticipated the QB run and perhaps there was no one left on their board at 64 who was a must have player. Its a project for sure, I hope it works out but I have faith in Licht. Wow, I would have never said that a before we got Brady!

  5. James Leventis Says:

since Mark Cook agrees, I agree. Great pick. Mullins has him ready, and Brady will mentor for a year or two.

  6. David Says:

I will say this, the offense that Trask ran was a lot more NFL friendly than the stuff Tebow or Chris leak ran.

  7. DingleBerry Says:

Trask was an awful pick. Plain and simple.

  8. EA Says:

I bet you this Pick turns out better than the 2nd rounder back in 2016.

2nd round pick, low cost, two years to learn behind the goat….
Here’s your chance son, let’s see what you can do with it!

In hindsight – will never be as bad a QB pick as Jameis Winston for the Bucs or Josh Freeman for the Bucs. Those guys were first round picks instead of last pick of the 2nd round.

Haters are gonna be glad it’s Trask coming off the bench instead of Gabbert if disaster happens.

EA – thanks man you just forced me to have an Aguayo PTSD flashback.

    ………………..

    LOLOLOLOLOL JOE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do you even realize that in that game Tebow set the NFL record for THREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Passes of over 50 yards in a ROW!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Some of you ‘football guys’ are SO ignorant!

  14. SKBucsFan Says:

This year could be perfect for Trask to learn in. The problem is that the salary cap and age catches up after next year for a good portion of the starters. Then he inherits a depleted team without depth.

You guys crying because we took a chance on a guy that could be the franchise in 3 years. Remember we could have also drafted a kicker, a drunken tight end, a Molly popping defensive end tweener, a slot cb who runs a 4.6, or a safety who had injury history who played all of 15 games in 4 seasons. We took a chance on the most important position in football who was in the heisman conversation all year. And gets to sit and learn behind the goat. Had the gators beaten Alabama in the shootout. And had they went to the playoffs he very well would have been the heisman trophy winner and would have been drafted in the top ten. See Mac jones. You really think Mac jones as the gators starting qb this year would have been drafted top 15. If trask was on the loaded Alabama team he probably would be a jet right now. And every jet fan would think they got the steal of the draft. You all know I’m right. Trask and Jones switch teams last year. Jones would be a 7th round or free agent Pickup qb. And trask goes to the jets or 49rs

  16. BucFanSince1998 Says:

Geno711 you suck. Had either Freedman or Winston worked behind OL and Bucs coaching of 2020. The dialogue would be completely different.

  17. Jeffbuc Says:

Skbucfan we are not in salary cap he’ll we will be in the top half of football bext year in salary cap. Why do all you fans keep thinking we are in cap hell. The team did a great job with the contracts just to carry over small amounts each year to ensure we’re not in cap he’ll. We don’t ha e a $45 million qb salary like other top teams. And when trask takes over he will be making about 43 million less than other QBs. But not have enough clout to demand a huge Co tract for second contract. Being he will be a one maybe 2 year starter. And if we do have to pay him great that means the pick was successful and he is doing great. If he doesn’t pan out we cut him. No one cried when we cut aguayo, mj stewart, Austin sefarian Jenkins , Justin Evans, Noah Spence, arrelious benn, Brian price, and many more that slip my mind

  18. Ash Says:

Not excited with this pick but it is what it is go bucs

  19. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Joe, really? Dumb comments. You are writing like it’s a slow news day. Leak was very limited physically. Nobody had him as a pro qb so talking about him here is dumb. Tebow was Tebow. Has won one more playoff game than you did. Do you blame Saban for all of his qbz lack of pro success? Treat people as individuals first.

  20. Joe Says:

Nobody had him as a pro qb so talking about him here is dumb.

Really? “Nobody had him as a pro QB?” Then why was he on the Bears’ roster?

    So who exactly is “dumb?”

  21. Jabowski Says:

Tebow was horrible? That is a ridiculous statement. If you look at the results he was better than your boy Jameis.

    LOL Nice try.

  23. Bellingham Bucs Fan Says:

BucFanSince1998, Winston did play with this coaching staff and 4/5 of this o-line. He sucked, and they told him to get lost.
