Accurate Mocker Advises Bucs Fans To Brace For An Edge Rusher

April 21st, 2021

Is this a reach?

Joe and many of the draft mockers come at mock drafts with polar opposite values.

Joe has been, is and always will be about accuracy. If you are not striving for accuracy, then why waste your time and Joe’s?

And why would anyone value someone’s mock if they don’t give a damn about accuracy? What’s the point? Seriously?

BSPNer Todd McShay once whiffed on all of his first-round picks. When this was told to the one and only Chris “Mad Dog” Russo of SiriusXM fame, and Russo also learned you had to pay BSPN to read McShay’s mock, Russo shrieked, “Pay for it? I wouldn’t urinate on it!”

But for the mockers, their mock drafts seem to be little more than toys in a sandbox.

So Joe likes to monitor the mock drafts from those who have a history of getting mocks right. And that leads Joe to Ryan McCrystal of Sharp Football Analysis, which is Warren Sharp’s outfit. In the past five years, only one mock drafter has had a better accuracy score. And MyCrystal’s batting average goes up each year. So obviously Joe wants to read this.

In McCrystal’s final mock draft, he has the Bucs selecting Penn State edge rusher Jayson Oweh.

Pick #32 Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Jayson Oweh, EDGE, Penn State
Previous pick:
Rondale Moore, WR

Jayson Oweh is a tough player to fit into mock drafts, because he’s coming off a zero-sack season in seven games. However, his dominant pro day demonstrated his rare talent. The Bucs, who aren’t looking for any immediate starters, might be the type of team who could justify adding a project like Oweh.

This Oweh is raw as hell. He never played football until he was a junior in high school. He’s got sick athletic skills but man, Joe is sorry, no sacks at all his last year of college? If the guy was that damn talented and big and strong and fast, how in the world could he not have one sack against the likes of Nebraska, Rutgers, Maryland and Illinois? This just does not compute for Joe.

Now Joe does know that there is a widespread belief in some NFL circles that Penn State coach James Franklin is a turrible coach. All the talent there in recent years and Penn State still hasn’t make a playoff game sort of backs up that belief.

Maybe like Greg Cosell of NFL Films seems to suggest, this Oweh simply doesn’t know how to play football yet?

If the Bucs draft Oweh at No. 32, let’s just say Joe trusts that Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht recognizes something in this guy. And Joe very much trusts defensive coordinator Todd Bowles and defensive line coach Kacy Rodgers get the most out of the guy.

But man, no sacks at all as a starter last year? That’s hard for Joe to get past, no matter how much of a freak athlete he is.

Nobody loves pass rushers more than Joe. But man, this guy at No. 32? Joe hopes he doesn’t turn into a Joel Buchsbaum one-liner, “Looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane.”

    Correction

He actually sneezed on two different qbs last year he was so close

In all fairness, i trust the coaches to see if the kid can play or not. Our dline is pretty nasty and got better since bowles and rogers graced us with their presence

  2. Bruce Blahak Says:

    reach! Olujari if he’s there

  3. Cobraboy Says:

Not much of a “highlight” reel…

  4. Jason Says:

I don’t like the way he spells his first name. Hard pass.

  5. Mitch Says:

He is the best athlete. Not the best football player. His tape says 5th round draft pick but due to his athleticism he will be severely over drafted, and may very well play like jane. I understand penn state was historically bad last year but zero sacks for an entire season as an edge rusher is inexcusable.

  6. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Some say that opposing teams gamed and played away from Oweh, but I am with Joe – no sack! There is much better defensive linemen in this draft that will be available when the Bucs pick. Better off staying safe, besides I don’t trust a player’s pro day 40 times like I do at the combined.

  7. Joe in Michigan Says:

Oweh had 7 sacks in 20 games in college. Not good production, but this Levi dude from Washington had 7 sacks in 34 games and some people want to take that clown in the 1st Round.

  8. Kbrick56 Says:

    Noah Spence 2

  9. Steven007 Says:

If we’re looking at production and tape over measurables he will obviously not be our first pick. Simple as that.

  10. Winny Testaverde Says:

Perhaps Joe projects this fella as the next ( insert quality moniker here ) Kyle “Less Is” Moore?

  11. Irishmist Says:

When it’s our turn to pick, it looks like the choice will be either a good CB or an iffy DL. I’d take the good CB and then sign Sheldon Richardson. He knows Bowles system and can step in right away at either DT or OLB. That gives us quality depth at 4 positions where we are long in the tooth. No rookie would give us that.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    JBF……..Joel Bucshbaum Fan

  13. Alanbucsfan Says:

It’s looking like there may be several outstanding OLinemen available when Bucs pick at 32- with the Bucs loaded at RB and TE, another solid OLineman would make the Offense even more potent

  14. Bucanero Says:

I mean I’m with Joe here, if Etienne or Moore are on the board I would prefer those guys than this long-shot project. He looks like a 2nd round tops with that production. I mean who gets drafted on a pro day? Did the Bucs attended that pro day? Were they all that impressed? If one of the Miami/Georgia guys falls then sure, get an EDGE otherwise maybe look into positions of impact not as depleted. Oweh doesn’t strike as a first round pick.

  15. Defense Rules Says:

So McCrystal sees us drafting a player who “simply doesn’t know how to play football yet” with our 1st Round pick? Ya right.

  16. August 1976 Buc Says:

Well for throwing mud (article about said NFL prospect) on the wall and seeing what sticks, lol. NO, draft the Best Available Player. GO BUCS!!!

  17. FIRETHECANNONS Says:

I was quite impressed by Joseph Ossai out of texas.

  18. Capt.Tim Says:

    Edge rusher- yes
Oweh? Only if Bowles and Rodgers can meet with the kid, and give him their blessing

  19. Casual Observer Says:

I like Ossai too. Should last till no. 32.

  20. Ash Says:

That no sacks for the entire season is a tough pill to swallow but am also not on the draft a rb in the first with this team even if joes crush is there which he probably won’t be so won’t have to worry about that wouldnt mind seeing a trade down happen for more picks

  21. Allbuccedup Says:

They will have to clear it with Brady first. If their not going to bring back AB the Tom Terrific is going to want R. Moore or E. Moore 4.29 or 4.34 take your choice or whos left at 32.

  22. kyle Says:

id love to see the georgia kid instead, i dont think he will make it to 32.

  23. 813bucboi Says:

trade down and grab c.baremore and q.meirnerz both in the 2nd round…

nelson and cam gil flashed a lot late in the season….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  24. Joe Says:

Some say that opposing teams gamed and played away from Oweh

That’s fair. Still, a goose egg in sacks if this guy is a first-round talent? He couldn’t luck into one? Fully understand a respected guy like Greg Cosell is in love with Owey, but man.

    Ossai

He may be more of a linebacker to be honest. That dude is *always* around the ball. With his nose for the football and the way he hustles, he just reminds Joe of Devin White.

  25. MadMax Says:

Maybe in a trade down, mid 2md……we need big mean nasty impact now like landon dickerson.

  26. Alanbucsfan Says:

Look at video of OT Tevin Jenkins, OK State vs Joseph Ossai

  27. geno711 Says:

So does Ryan McCrystal get graded for:
    Jayson Oweh, EDGE, Penn State
or his previous pick: Rondale Moore

I am guessing that it is only has last mock draft which will certainly be done after today.

In any case, I am not a fan of Jayson Oweh but if the Buc’s are … then I will give him a shot just like I did with others.

  28. JimmyJack Says:

Joe what does your mock draft come out? I cant wait!!

  29. geno711 Says:

With others: I love Joseph Ossai there instead.

  30. JimmyJack Says:

Licht averages drafting a K once every 3 years. We are due

  31. catcard202 Says:

No Sacks Oweh??? Hell no…Tape don’t lie…100% looks like a guy not living up to his athletic potential to me…(& if he has not tapped into that as of yet…There is no reason to believe he will ever do it after collecting a check!)

Would hope for Ossai @ Edge…But would really like DE instead.

Give me effort & determination character guys along the DEF front… For my money, that’s Payton Turner (HOU) at bottom of 1st…Or wait on a guy like Dayo Odeyingbo (Vandy) @ the bottom of the 3rd.

  32. Your Mom Says:

Yeah this team should no longer be interested in remedial education projects. Get him good just in time for him to go to free agency and not be able to sign him under the cap? No thanks.

  33. Hodad Says:

Spence 2.0, I like that. Having zero sacks playing against the stiffs Penn St plays against, no thanks. If they gave the Lombardi to the team with the best work out players, I’d be all for it.

  34. Jerry R Jones Says:

I understand the cause to pause with Oweh, but to have only started FB in his jr. year in Highschool I would suspect him to be a bit raw. What better outfit to be in than TB to hone those skills, matched with that feaky athleticism.

  35. Jack Burton Mercer Says:

Two things, Franklin is a very good coach. He won at Vanderbilt for crying out loud. Second, the 32 pick is too close to the second round for comfort. Licht has a BAD track record in the second round. One good one last year is not enough to give me faith. This guy is the next Booker Reese, or McCants or Curry. Pass.

  36. Bucsfanman Says:

Production, production, production! Talented players always find a way to produce.
I know we LOVE edge-rushers ’round here but, we can afford to be picky.

  37. Admiral Redbeard Says:

His lack of production (sacks specifically) may have had more to do with what he was asked to do, or maybe he’s just another Noah Spence. Not worth the risk to find out in my opinion. We were hurting last year when Vita went down, and BIG men (who can hold it down like V can) are hard to find, so we should be looking for his backup.

  38. Buczilla Says:

No. No. No. Hell no. We can do better and your last sentence sums this dude up for me. 3rd or 4th round fine, but this dude wouldn’t even be on my draft board.

  39. Mike Says:

I think Licht’s best 1st round picks have always been athletic freaks. You look at Evans, Vea, White, Wirfs, OJ, etc. All freakish athletes. So, he definitely wants that type of player in the 1st.

  40. Mike28277 Says:

    Pass

  41. #1bucsfan Says:

Don’t like the no sacks last year. Is there stats for pressure in college ? What about setting the edge and run stoppage. If he’s good in those areas and just needs to sit with Shaq and jpp to learn some moves idk maybe he just needs some tutoring but that’s a big risk at #1. We got to get a starter with our 1st 2 picks even if they don’t start they should be able to start for any other team in the nfl. We just happen to have every starter back this year but still think we should be picking starters and not proj. With our 1st 2 picks
