“We Don’t Believe That We’re Causing Terrible Problems In The Future”

March 31st, 2021

Buccaneers co-chairman Joel Glazer

The legions of armchair Bucs general managers were on Joe’s mind today.

Team Glazer, specifically Bucs co-owner/co-chairman Joel Glazer, fielded questions from media types and Joe had to toss one in about money.

After all, that’s what billionaires specialize in, so Joe has heard.

Real GM Jason Licht has been crushing free agency, re-signing all his starters and many backups by throwing around plenty of fat signing bonuses and restructuring contracts with “dead cap” money kicked years down the road — approaches the Bucs’ have shunned as an organization in the past.

It feels like the Bucs have moved all-in financially — and spiritually — this season like never before, willing to mortgage some of the future for a second Super Bowl in as many years.

Joe asked Glazer to talk about what seems like a change in philosophy and a maybe a change in how things are being run at One Buc Palace.

“You know I think there’s a little bit of a misconception about that,” Glazer began. “I think if you look at the contracts we’ve done and some of the longer term contracts, you know, they’re players that we expect to be with us. You know, there’s been a little thing done here or there. But when we look out to the future and where the cap will continue to grow, and the team we have and the players we’ve extended, yes, maybe some of the structure has changed, but we do have any eye to the future.

“At the same token we do feel that there is a window now. It’s all about winning championships so we want to give it our best shot. But we definitely have an eye to the future. We do not believe that we’re causing terrible problems in the future. Again, if you dig deep into the players that we’ve given long-term contracts to, they are players we expect to be with us.”

Frankly, this is a non-issue at JoeBucsFan.com world headquarters in between arguing over the last Big Storm beers in the company cooler.

There is a “window now,” to quote Glazer, and whatever it takes to make another Super Bowl happen is well worth not having enough cash in 2023 to re-sign, say, Sean Murphy-Bunting and Lavonte David.

The two biggest factors to them not being in a cap crunch on 2-3 years, even if they continue to resign all the players they want every year are:

    1. What they are paying the QB position. Brady’s contract is reasonable, and when Brady leaves, he’ll likely be replaced by someone on a rookie deal, or someone who wants to come in and try to win it with the pieces that are in place and will take a reasonable, Brady-style deal to do it
    2. The new tv deals will balloon the salary cap when those rights kick in and it will be in the $250+ million range. That will cover up a lot of money from these voidable delayed deals and the Bucs will resume to business as normal.

The window will not close any time soon, as long as Licht and the Front Office Team keep acing the draft. But when you auck at drafting, overpay a qb, sign free agents who no longer play for you and take up dead money, that is when you are likely going to not have a shot at a title.

Win one more and I’ll be all set for another 20 year of depression lol but for real, take the approach of shoot now and sort of the money later

  5. westernbuc Says:

Then Lavonte isn’t going anywhere in two years

  6. SOEbuc Says:

Stay killin it in the draft Jason. It’s rebuild through the draft time.

  7. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Man, it’s good to be born a Glazer. Nerdy as you wanna be, but you have the benjamins.

  8. Ron says Says:

The chance to have back to back puts us in a very elite group of teams and depending on this draft we might be able to maintain the nucleus of this team for a few more years by getting some mileage out of the success of earlier drafts and the allure of having Tom Brady. To win back to back is worth the risk but to have the chance to compete for another after that is Goat like.

  9. Doolnutts Says:

I think wel be fine. We have several players that will be retiring or with contracts ending that will free up cap

  10. cmurda Says:

Hat tip to the Glazer family. Thankfully Papa Glazer got to enjoy a Championship and the legacy has continued on. Sticking with Licht especially after the brutal draft in 2016 proved brilliant. Again, hat tip and big ups to the G’s.

  11. BucEmUp Says:

Better keep drafting well, at least we know jason licht isnt going anywhere…

  12. catcard202 Says:

There is always a chance to move contracts at a later date…No issues going all in, when the window is open.

But FO needs to keep hitting winning tickets in the draft to insure a flow of talented depth is ready to step in & step up, when called upon!

I agree that it’s all about the NOW. At least while we have TB.

  14. Leighroy Says:

There is currently 16 mil of dead cap assigned to 2025 per Spotrac. My crystal ball doesn’t look that far ahead to predict a negligible or significant impact, but just food for thought for now.

    Just Win Baby

  16. Allbuccedup Says:

Thats why getting a young QB to learn from Brady in the draft is two fold. You are setting up our future plus not paying him top dollar until his rookie contract expires. And at that time most of the dead cap money will be gone.

  17. Fred mcneil Says:

There is indeed a window right now and I’d love to exploit it.
Right now, and I really mean RIGHT now we have a 1 or maybe 2 year window.
We may never come this way again.
Like Bugs Bunny said “Carrots wait for Noone so I will pick them now.”

  18. Fred mcneil Says:

    Eeeehh, what’s up doc???

  19. BA4President Says:

Smart man! We learned the last time that it could easily be another 18 years before we get another shot at the big game if we don’t play our cards right.
    Dam* I love this team!!!!

  20. SKBucsFan Says:

I agree with the win now attitude. We may go back to sucking hard in the near future, but chanelling my inner Yoda makes me say ; it’s win or don’t win there is no 4th place medal.
