“New Team, New Journey, Last Year Means Nothing”

March 27th, 2021

Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians.

It seems marketing departments of professional and college teams have to come up with an annual one-liner gimmick to sell tickets. Supposedly.

Joe’s never taken a marketing class. None of these silly/dumb one-liners (you know, like #ItsABucsLife) ever motivated Joe to open his wallet. And teams spend (hundreds of thousands of dollars on this stuff for reasons that thoroughly and completely escape Joe.

Never in Joe’s life have these gimmicks ever moved him to watch a game, buy a ticket, buy gear, go to a game or buy beer. Maybe it works for non-sports fans or casual fans, but Joe doesn’t roll with that kind. Joe has yet to meet anyone that said, “Hey, you see the Bucs have a new slogan this year? Man, I HAVE to buy season tickets now!”

This came to mind when Joe heard Jenna Laine of ESPN remark how she spoke with Bucs Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians earlier this week. She said Arians’ motto (slogan?) for the team this year is, “New team, new journey, last year means nothing.”

(Not sure how that will fit all on the front of a T-shirt.)

Laine noted, while appearing on Mike Greenberg’s ESPN show, that she basically was told the same thing when she spoke with park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, handshake-stiffing, jet-ski-losing, biscuit-baking, tequila-shooting, waffle-grilling, trophy-throwing, Bucs-Super-Bowl-winning quarterback Tom Brady.

How is the ecstasy of a 2020 championship season lingering with the players? Well, per Laine, it is not with Brady.

Laine recounted a story about Brady the day after the Bucs won the Super Bowl. With only a few hours of sleep after spending much of the night at the team’s Super Bowl victory party, Brady called quarterbacks coach Clyde Christenson to go over details for 2021 so Brady could get a jump on preparations for the new season.

So long ago, Brady was already in 2021-season mode.

Not only did Arians save the Bucs a load of Team Glazer loot by coming up with the team’s new slogan himself, Brady is already locked in for 2021.

The Super Bowl, for the two team’s biggest offensive shot-callers, is already but a distant memory.

Tom Brady knows that the time is NOW. This team is loaded in terms of starters & key rotational players, he’s the offense’s Field General and it’s HIS team. The talent’s there as everyone has seen; now it’s all about want-to.

As much as Brady would love another SB win, I think it’s even more-so for several of our veterans on defense. Players like Suh, JPP, LVD among several others. They’re Field Generals in their own right, and they didn’t come back to settle for second-best. I’m not the slightest bit concerned about this team’s desire & motivation.

Safe to say that wouldn’t fit on a t shirt either……….

Last year, I posted that if the Bucs won it all, TB12 would already be back at it the day after…like he was in New England. I cheated; had the answers to the test.

  4. Mitch Says:

Just looking at the schedule this year I believe that as long as the bucs can ward off father time and stay healthy this year they will break records, and win back to back super bowls for the first time since Tom did it in in 03/04.

  5. SlyPirate Says:

    I got a slogan idea …

    “Defending Champions”

  6. DoooshLaRue Says:

    The schedule doesn’t mean squat.
Every year a bunch of you guys love to plot and plan and pencil in wins or loses.
    I doesn’t work that way.

  7. JA Says:

“Last year means nothing” should become the team’s mantra. The NFL has no shortage of Super Bowl winners who suffered from swollen head syndrome the following year (see the 2003 Bucs). In the past 32 years, including the aforementioned Bucs, nine Super Bowl winners failed to make the playoffs.
Many here have this team as a lock to repeat when the focus should be nothing other than winning Week 1.
That said, I have more confidence in Brady and the coaching staff than I did with Gruden and Brad Johnson. I’m sure we all do. With far superior talent, this team has all the pieces to make another run. Like all teams, however, they are only a few key injuries away from turning greatness into mediocrity.
In other words, no matter how good the team, all winners need to catch a few breaks.
    Go Bucs!

I don’t know about anyone else but last year meant a great deal to me…..I think it meant a lot to Joe, BA, Brady & the entire team…..and should have meant something to every Buc fan.

I understand the concept of looking forward…..and, I’m very happy we have someone at the helm at HC & especially at QB who will not stand for complacency.

Biggest thing this year, as with most, will be if we have the depth (injuries)

It still doesn’t seem real that they won the Superbowl.

  13. REDZONE BA Says:

Like the message and approach. BA approach to kick new gear for 2021.

    “Let the past die.”

  15. BUCFAN4LIFE Says:

They’ll all bask in the Glory of being World Champions for a little while but they’re all VERY hungry and will be ready to “feed” again next season . BA & Brady will NOT let them get complacent or have “big heads” . Just like last year it’s a “One game at a time” mentality . BA’s almost right . Last year DOES mean something but it’s time to move on and “turn the page” .

  16. PSL Bob Says:

I just don’t see complacency being a problem with this group. Many of the seasoned players (David, Evans, Godwin, etc.) knew nothing but losing over the years. So the taste of winning, and winning big, will linger. They’re not going to want to revert to the old ways, and Arians and Brady won’t let them. The Bucs are going to have a little swagger going into 2021 and will want to impose their will on every team they play. Throw in a full series of OTAs, practice and pre-season games and they’ll be ready to hit the ground running. Just absolutely nothing suggests that this team will regress in 2021. They should only get better!

  17. PatsBucsfan4years Says:

They will be… They will be!

  18. Tampa Brady Fan Says:

2021 Bucs are going to be the first team to go 20-0 in a season. Think about it, who is going to beat them?

  19. Eddie Says:

I think the chance to repeat will keep them hungry. The chance to be one of the greatest teams ever will be enough to motivate them.GO BUCS

Tee shirt? I like BUCS: DO IT!!!
