Is Bill Belichick Losing His Mind?

March 19th, 2021

Collects ex-Bucs kickers and moths.

This has been a bone of contention for several readers of this here site.

Joe has read that Bill Belicheat, strongman of the Patriots, has been sniffing around Playoff Lenny. Meanwhile a guy some Bucs fans are fond of, one-trick pony James White, Belicheat is willing to let walk away.

Joe has a very high opinion of Belicheat. And if he wants Player-A and Player-B would not only leave Belicheat but possibly replace Player-A on his current team, Joe is going to take a very hard look at Player-A.

Player-A is Playoff Lenny. Playoff-B is White.

This notion that Joe would be very wary of a guy Belicheat no longer has any use for seems to irk several of Joe’s readers. In fact, some believe Belicheat has lost it when it comes to player evaluation.

Well, Jenna Laine and Mike Reiss, both of ESPN, offer information that to Joe demonstrates Belicheat just may be losing it. It seems he has developed a fondness for ex-Bucs kickers, if you can imagine such a thing.

Good grief! The ex-Bucs kickers are beyond horrible. How many kickers did the Bucs go through before they finally ran into Ryan Succop? Joe doesn’t want to count for fear of ralphing up lunch.

If Belicheat really believes ex-Bucs kickers can help him out, then he really does need counseling more than he needs mothcakes.

So for the folks who believe Belicheat has lost his touch in player evals, the fact he is collecting ex-Bucs kickers is damning evidence.

This shows how difficult it is to find a quality kicker, more so than any insanity on Bill’s part.

I don’t think the Bucs end up with either Playoff Lenny or James White. RoJo, Vaughn and another vet.

  2. No Risk It No Biscuit Says:

    C’mon Joe!!!!!!!!!!!!
You have believe in the system!!!!!!!!!!
Word in the street is BillyCheat helped developed Vinatieri!!!!!!!!

  3. No Risk It No Biscuit Says:

Sorry about the exclamation points. I miss Realisto. Lol

  4. TiredBucsFan Says:

    Playoff Lenny! Please!

  5. DBS Says:

Let’s see. He let Tom Brady go. Who in turn goes to one of the worst teams in the NFL. and delivers a Super Bowl. He shouldn’t be evaluating anyone but retire and not show his face.

  6. Cainishere Says:

I am not a Bill fan. I feel it has been his players that have been great such as Brady. With Brady at the helm he has an incredible winning record. Without Brady at the helm he has an ordinarily average losing record. Without Brady he wouldn’t have won all of those Super Bowls. He rides the coat tails of the greats. He cheats any way that he can and to me is trash. You guys high on Bill do not know the facts. Garbage is what he is.

  7. Gofortheface30 Says:

You’re not fooling anyone el Bucco realisto. I mean “no risk it no biscuit.” No one misses you. You and NDOG should have properly choked on that big fat L long ago so no real buc fan would hear from you ever again

  8. K2 Says:

The Bucs problem is Rojo and Lenny are too much the same. Both are good runners, but sub-par on blocking and receiving. They both have value but lack the complete package. So, White fills a need which the Patriots already have on their roster….and the Bucs lack.

Kickers are hot and cold…get one that works for the moment. Tomorrow they might have a melt-down.

  9. ModHairKen Says:

I don’t care what Belichick thinks or does. If Fournette wants to leave, go. Thanks for last year. Make money. Vaughn will be much better in year 2. And if not James White, another veteran will come in and help.

  10. FirstTimePoster Says:

Belichick has always dumped players a year (or two) early. Always. I kind of get that. Get value before the value is gone. James White is the same thing. Older player, but still has tread on the tires. I’m good with Fournette leaving as we can’t afford him. White is an upgrade because he has better hands.

  11. Rod Munch Says:

Nick Folk actually had a better year than Succop and makes 1/3rd the salary… I do not want Folk back, ever, but Folk made his kicks at a higher rate, and longer kicks. Both Succop and Folk sucked at the point afters, no idea why these guys are missing so many of them, but Succop needs to get that cleaned up. With that said I like getting Succop back, the guy was a great kicker for many years with the Titans before he got injured, and last year showed that.

As for Fournette and White, they’re not the players. Fournette is a three down power back, White is much more of a receiving back (who can run, but ideally is a pass catcher). If the price is the same the Bucs should go ahead and bring back Fournette for how he played during the playoff run – but he got benched and wasn’t even activated for a reason, the guy was missing blocks and dropping passes. Don’t forget in the SB, it was a pass to Fournette that he couldn’t handle that got INT’d, that was called back on a PI away from the play. I think teams understand this, including the Bucs, which is why he’s not getting the money some people thought he might (which is good news for Tampa if they want him back).

  12. 941bucsfan Says:

Just in Case Joe was wondering, nick folk, matt gay and cairo santos all missed less kicks than succop last year.. maybe it wasnt the kickers Joe.

  13. Jaymiss Pick6 Again Says:

Ok Joe – I forgive you for the “Jameis White” thing. Soooo..back to your player A and player B thing. Why aren’t we hearing anything about Phillip Lindsay to the Bucs? To expensive or can’t catch. Both seem like falsehoods.

  14. PassingThru Says:

One trick pony James White? The one trick pony who Brady felt was also the MVP of the biggest comeback in Super Bowl history?

    This blog is becoming tedious.

  15. Jaymiss Pick6 Again Says:

@ PassingThru – “This blog is becoming tedious.” Then you are aptly named. Keep passing thru. This is a Bucs loving site.

  16. Rod Munch Says:

Where Belichick lost his mind was that really stupid signing of Nelson Agholor, he way overpaid for that bum who can’t catch the football. No idea what he thinks he sees there, but all I see is that guy dropping pass after pass with the Eagles, one mediocre year in Vegas don’t erase that. Their other signings are pretty good, except for, of course, the fact they don’t have a QB, unless those new TEs can catch balls being thrown at their ankles by Cam.

  17. Kentucky Buc Says:

One trick pony that beat 4 guys for the winning rushing touchdown to win a Super Bowl.

  18. Steven007 Says:

I accept your apology Joe, haha. Yes I was one that has posted several times about the supposed savant that is belichick. As just one reminder he let Chandler Jones go and he has enjoyed a much better career since leaving the pats. Not to mention of course TB and gronk which are exhibits a and b. Let him collect ex Bucs kickers. They are there because his fifth round draft pick kicker that he didn’t get enough pushback on is a failure.

  19. Winny Testaverde Says:

Letting Brady walk…while taking a 14 million dead cap hit….may have driven him mad. He’s definitely desperate. BA may or may not be as good as a coach as BB…but he sure is a better human to his players. I’m enjoying BB taking it in the shorts a bit. His Super Bowl is when the Bucs come to town this season. I suspect he kept Cam Newton vs playing a young guy is in large part the Bucs matchup.

  20. BradentuckeyBuc Says:

Kicking is 90% mental at this level. There was too much pressure to be “the guy who finally solved the Bucs long standing kicking woes.”

  21. Joe in Michigan Says:

I’m not going to bad-mouth Belichick, one of the greatest coaches in NFL history. I will say that there was an “All-Overpaid” Free Agent list over the past week, and 3 of the top 10 were guys the Patriots signed (Nelson Agholor, Hunter Henry, and Matt Judon). Cam Newton got 1 year, $14 million. Newton looked good in the first few games, but after that didn’t look worth $14 let alone $14 mil.
Lenny was very good in the playoffs, during the the regular season he looked like a guy that needed to be replaced (remember the healthy scratch?) If Lenny chooses to leave, I’d be okay with the Bucs signing James White.

  22. Buccan8 Says:

If you look at a map, Gillette Stadium is slightly angled in relation to RayJay’s positioning. I encourage you all to Google it. It’s quite fascinating. Bill Belichick knows that former Bucs kickers will thrive in Foxborough, not because of his system, but because there is no south end zone. The patriots have a SSE end zone, which will make all the difference in the world, obviously.

  23. BradentuckeyBuc Says:

Will be interesting what BB’s legacy will be if he never makes back to The Big Game.

  24. Rayjay1122 Says:

He allowed the GOAT to leave NE. He can’t be that brilliant. Thank you Bill !!!

  25. Kentucky Buc Says:

BB wants to play power foosball . Thus Lenny. At least that’s what mmmmomma say.

  26. CharlieV Says:

In answer to your headline question. yes! Look no further than very recent history.
I’ll take Belichick’s cast off’s (Brady and Gronk to date) and he can have our’s.

  27. Cobraboy Says:

Just a thought: perhaps after the mid-season issues that we have been told happened with Fournette the Bucs don’t really want him back.

There are rumors of Fournette immature behavior in Jacksonville.

Maybe the Bucs don’t want to put up with that stuff going in to 2021.

  28. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

If BB don’t win this year, it might be his last in New England.
The Fan Base has already started turning on him, for allowing Brady to walk.

  29. sauron's eye Says:

He also was ready to get rid of player B Tom Brady. Playoff Lenny is obviously a better pure RB than James White, but white would be an important niche player for us, a sure handed third down back. Brady would get the most out of him giving us more first downs and more wins.

  30. Bucfanforever Says:

Everyone knows it’s Brady who makes kickers make field goals. To get consistent kicking, get Brady.

    —————-

Why are you looking at the “player” and not the team? right after Jones was traded they won the super bowl. And then another one.

Honestly I don’t get what some of you “experts” ever see in the game.

  34. Capt.Tim Says:

    He isnt Brilliant.
    He had Brady.
I think they left on bad terms- and Brady wants to show the world that he was the reason Bealicheat looked smart
Belichick knows his legacy is at stake. If Brady wins Superbowls, and Belichick cant coach a winning team- the secret will be out.

Belichick only looked good because of Brady

Right now, Belichick has been on a spending Spree- paying average players big money.
And, as of of now- he’s still betting on Cam Newton.
Newton care more about fashion than Football.

Lottsa luck Bill. You’re gonna need it!

  35. Youngbucs Says:

Mr ego let Brady walk nuff said that’s why he’s panic mode now.

  36. Geno711 Says:

Said it before. If joe was talking about skill selecting defensive players for belicheat than it has some value. However, what evidence is Joe producing to suggest BB has a skill set in evaluating offensuve guys in the last 7 years

  37. Steven007 Says:

Jo Mama, the conjecture wasn’t about player versus team. I’m taking nothing away from Bill and his many accomplishments. I’m just saying he’s not quite the savant when it comes to player evaluations which has been proven over and over again. That’s all.

  38. Beeej Says:

Belicheat no longer wanted GRONK around EITHER, and actually tried to trade him

  39. DaBux Says:

That’ll show us. Jason AC/DC Licht will be taught a lesson or something.

    ————-

Gronk bailed on the patriots and said he was retiring well after all the top free agent tight ends were already taken. Which left the pats with a gaping need at tight end.

  41. Jo_mama Says:

    Steven K

He traded a good player for value. And also knowing his stellar play would require a huge contract.

Belichick used the money he would have spent on Jones to get Gilmore. Who has been the best at his position since he was signed. And again won 2 Super Bowls and went to 3 since the trade.

Do I want the bucs to keep Antonio Brown? Yes. But I understand they may have to let him walk because they had more important needs.

Same thing. Sometimes you can’t keep all the good players

  42. LISTNFRMAFAR Says:

Why do we care what Belichick does or thinks. Anyone who has watched James White play knows he is very talented. Look at who he resigned at QB, I think he’s showing signs of senility like Biden.

  43. Steven007 Says:

Mama, that was probably meant for me since I don’t see Mr k on this thread. But I think you’re getting away from the OP anyways. The narrative was that belichick was basically infallible when it came to getting rid of guys before they tanked. That’s been proven to be untrue. That’s all that we’re really discussing here. Everyone posting knows that Bill is one of the best of all times. Your support of him makes it seem like your president of his fan club. Which is fine. But he’s not infallible.

  44. Steven007 Says:

  45. SB : Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

JOE, why are you being so myopic? Didn’t BB let Brady walk and replace him with Scam Newton??????????????????

  46. Kentucky Buc Says:

BB-6 rings with Brady Goat Qb
BB-2 rings with Lawrence Taylor Goat Defensive player. under Bill Parcells
I guess we will see what he does without 2 of the greatest players of all time.

  47. 6throundpick Says:

BB is a bad GM; ought to stick to coaching without the ego. He just overpaid for a lot of FA players; wasted his 2 3rd (TE) rounders from last year. Yeah, the great kicking game shortens the field. And the Pats field is, perhaps, longer than it should be? Sorry, BB, I am not seeing the VALUE in your FA signings. Can’t wait to see you in Foxborough. Go Bucs!

  48. Gingjoe Says:

What it is it with guys named joe being complete ass clowns

  49. tbbucs3 Says:

I guess Roberto Aguayo had to leave his job at Subway behind

  50. gotbbucs Says:

Sure are a lot of running backs getting signed for good money, yet there sits Joe’s precious “Playoff Lenny”. Nobody knocking.

He priced himself out of this round of musical chairs. When the dust settles, he’ll either come crawling back(I really hope not), or he’ll have to sign a prove it deal with a crap team.

He’s not a feature back. He doesn’t care to try that hard. There’s a lot of diva in there that he tried to hide in his interviews during the playoffs.

…and as far as White being a one trick pony. He may indeed be, but if you’re really good at that one trick, there’s always going to be someone willing to pay to see it.

  51. MRRR Says:

Lets not forget how important LF was in the playoffs and Super Bowl. However, we don’t need him because Rojo is very similar. We do need a RB who can catch. Maybe it’s James White or maybe we draft him. But I will always be grateful for Playoff Lenny.

  52. former pats fan Says:

    hi dbs (3/19 at 3:17)

re: “Let’s see. He let Tom Brady go. Who in turn goes to one of the worst teams in the NFL. and delivers a Super Bowl. He shouldn’t be evaluating anyone but retire and not show his face.”

bill didn’t just let brady go. he’s been trying to get rid of him since 2014.
you have to understand the motivations of bill b. he’s always been a very small man with a fragile ego and is obsessively insecure. other than passing don shula in wins, the main thing on his mind is proving it was him that was the reason for all the pats super bowls, not brady, in fact he feels he could have done what he did with brady with any or most ordinary unspectacular qb.

bill’s insecurity and weak ego every buc fan has to be grateful for. because if he didn’t bad mouth brady’s ability after last season to john lynch who wanted to know from bill if brady still had it, then lynch and shannahan would be going to sbs with brady and not the bucs. so, thanks bill. for once you’re being a total you know what paid off in a good way for tampa bay bucs fans.

  53. former pats fan Says:

one more thing, bill is a an exceptional teacher and has more knowledge than most, so he is a very effective if inflexible bull-headed coach. but the way go goes about treating human beings, is just not right. again a very insecure you know what and a tyrant.

  54. adam from ny Says:

if we go into new england this year and open up a can of whoop azz on those pats, belichunk might conceivably lose it and noose himself up in the locker room after the game…

essentially he could be hanging around the locker room for a long time after the loss…

tom is gonna want to hang 50 on that team with no letting up in foxyboro

  55. BucsFanSince1976 Says:

You mean the “One Trick Pony” whose career rushing average is higher than playoff Lenny?
You mean the “One Trick Pony” that scored 20 points in a Super bowl?

C’mon Joe , you are wise enough to know that James White is a huge upgrade.

  56. Kentucky Buc Says:

If the Bucs do indeed spank the pats in fboro BB won’t have to hang himself. The Pats fans will do it for him.

  57. Cobraboy Says:

I am not giving up on Vaugn either running or catching passes.

  58. Buc1987 Says:

I can’t believe Roberto Aguayo is still kicking footballs.

  59. Oneilbuc Says:

Now yall talking down on him because he didn’t kiss Brady but !! Again go back and see how many times a team put up 30 points on the Patriots defenses when Brady was there?? Remember he made Brady the quarterback he is today . And don’t forget he had the most opt outs in the NFL and it was mainly on the defense side of the ball and they still went 7 and 9 .

  60. Ne+ bucs fan Says:

I’ll give you that oneibuc, good take

  61. Chesapeake Bay Bucco Says:

You ARE ill, oneBuc. to say: “he made Brady the quarterback he is today” is silly. TB12 was going to be great under any good HC with his attention to detail, good habits, skill and dedication to the nuances of the game. A good match, but to say that BB “made” Brady is a laugh.

  62. MadMax Says:

Man, Belichick is looking like a disheveled mess, and im not trying to be funny. I feel for the guy….he’s in unknown territory….but karma does a job when you treat Mr. GOAT Brady the way he did, just saying.
