Fifth-Year (2022) Option For Vita Vea Will Cost $7.6M

March 10th, 2021

Vita Vea

The focus is on 2021 and retaining Bucs sacks king Shaq Barrett, but it’s always great to keep an eye on the future.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Network jumped on Twitter today and laid out the hard numbers on players that were first-round picks in 2018. Clubs must decide by May 3 to exercise their fifth-year options on all those players.

Pelissero noted that players like 2018 first-round picks like Vita Vea, who didn’t make a Pro Bowl and haven’t played in enough games, are in the bottom-tier cost when it comes to their fifth-year option. For Vea, that would be $7.63 million for 2020.

Of course, the Bucs will exercise that option, which is a steal of a deal. The money is only guaranteed if Vea makes the roster — just like O.J. Howard’s nearly $6 payday next season is only guaranteed if he makes the team. But the Howard situation is cloudier because he’s recovering from Achilles surgery.

    They have to take it.

  2. Steven007 Says:

No brainer while they negotiate his certain extension.

  3. Chris Thomas from Heaven Says:

I trade OJ Howard on draft day

  4. Larry Says:

    What a bargain!!!

  5. Cainishere Says:

    Worth every penny too.

  6. AlV Says:

    Literally a no brainer.

  7. Buc50 Says:

According to some here, he probably should get paid Shaq money and let Shaq go.

  8. PassingThru Says:

Cheap option. After next season, the franchise tag for a DL will probably be in the $17.4 million neighborhood. You don’t want to go there unless you have to. If you extend him now (if the GM accountants and agents create space) you can probably save quite a bit of money and cap space later.

  9. Cobraboy Says:

Typo: option is for 2022, not 2020.

    2020 is yesterday’s news… ๐Ÿ˜‰

  10. mark2001 Says:

    Worth every penny.

  11. BucEmUp Says:

Id argue Vea is the most important guy on the Line…He is an animal!

  12. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

With the Salary Cap and so many teams hurting, getting a 5th round draft pick would be the best option.

  13. Steven007 Says:

Alabama, what are you talking about? 5th round pick? Do you mean pick up the fifth year option? Yes of course they’re going to do that. Not even a question.

  14. SC Bucs Fan Says:

Am I the only one who keeps checking in every hour hoping for a Shaq extension article?

  15. Doug Says:

    Sign him long term now

  16. Marine Buc Says:

That is a bargain… If he continues to develop while staying healthy he will be fetching far more coin than that. At least twice that much.

  17. zzbuc Says:

    Pretty obvious!!

  18. Bucsfanman Says:

    Two words: WORTH IT!

  19. Steven007 Says:

Best part is he’s under our control for the next two years. 5 mil this year and then 7 plus for the 5th year option. Likely the Bucs sign him to an extension before that but still.

  20. Chris Thomas from Heaven Says:

Nate Burleson said on GMF this morning that Winfield Jr will be in the HOF one day

  21. Sorryjackchuckiesback Says:

Vea is the one you really have to have… Jpp and Barrett disappear when he’s not out there…. Dude is too much to handle and just getting better… The days of bucs players not making pro bowl is almost over…. Unreal White didn’t make it or a number of players from this team

  22. Rob F Says:

oh no, what ever will Jason Licht do?!

  23. Buc4evr Says:

Ha. Goodbye OJ. Gronk is coming back.

  24. Aceofaerospace Says:

Weโ€™d be lucky to get a fifth round pick for OJ. Better than nothing, I guess.

  25. Bucs Guy Says:

There are too many reams looking for reliable TEs. I feel confident the Bucs could get a 4th for OJ in a trade. Ask for a 2nd, settle for a 3rd.

  26. Miller5252 Says:

I hope they can continue the trend of signing draft pics before free agents. Licht is going to continue to have tough decisions going forward on our younger players as their contracts come due. If we can keep Gronk as long as Brady is here I would keep which ever TE is going to be the cheapest and send the others packing and use a mid round pic next year to draft a blocking/catching TE. As long as Vea stays healthy, heโ€™s gonna get a heck of a contract coming soon.

“just like O.J. Howardโ€™s nearly $6 payday next season is only guaranteed if he makes the team.”

OJ’s gonna be paid only $6??? What a bargain!!! We can sign a whole lot of good players if that’s all he’s getting!!!๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜…

  28. WhatTheBuc Says:

    But…but…but… Darwin James?

  29. ocala Says:

Easy decision, but I would not mind it if the Bucs gave him an extension rather than letting him complete his rookie deal.

  30. Kobe Faker Says:

    “Hey Fatboy Vea

The regular season is now 17 games not 7”

    Kobe Faker

  31. Dlavid Says:

Kobe … no matter Fat Boy turned it on in the playoffs . Just like Shaq ! See the similarities?

  32. ItzOK Says:

Itz a bargain do the 5th year option because the following year three will be some real tough decisions and the party will be over.

  33. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Here’s the problem, and it’s the same one we ran into with Godwin…….we really can’t extend beyond the 5th year option with Vea because we have no extra money to give him in 2021……we will have to wait until 2022 during his option year to negotiate a long term contract giving him a raise in 2022…..

  34. TOM Says:

I would take a 5th in a heartbeat for OJ. To injury prone. Not as good as originally thought.

  35. BucEmUp Says:

Just keep drafting well and evaluating talents. Finding the players to replace the ones we cannot afford that cost less.
