Chucky Says Bucs Can Win, Assesses Offense

February 3rd, 2021

Passing the torch to Bruce Arians?

Jon Gruden is more relevant than usual this week because his Raiders beat Kansas City 40-32 this season and choked against them in a four-point loss in November, and he lost a tight game to the Bucs.

Buccaneers Ring of Honor head coach Gruden, aka Chucky, served up firm takes on Tom Brady and the Buccaneers’ firepower this week. during a visit to SiriusXM Mad Dog Radio.

Chucky was adamant that the way to beat the Chiefs is by running the football and cashing in red-zone opportunities. The only good defense for Patrick Mahomes, per Chucky, is keeping him off the field.

“I really believe the Buccaneers have the firepower with Fournette and their other big back [Ronald] Jones,” Chucky said, adding that Mike Evans and Chris Godwin are more than most teams can handle.

And Chucky, obviously, seemed upset that he didn’t sign Tom Brady last offseason.

“Brady is still Tom Brady. Make no mistake about it,” Chucky said. “He’s a master at the line of scrimmage. He can get in and out of good and bad plays, and he doesn’t miss throws if guys are open. And the thing I love about the Buccaneers is their balance, and they can pass protect.”

As for the Bucs’ win at Las Vegas this season, Chucky admitted to still being bitter about the Bucs’ converting a late third-down play on a checkdown and the NFL COVID rules preventing his offensive line from practicing leading up to the game.

“That’s still disturbing me,” Chucky said.

    LMAO
    The Bucs won 45-20
Ummmm that isn’t a close game at all.

  2. Robert Says:

Chucky was the greatest addition outside of TB in team history

  3. Anonymous Says:

Bucs rolled in that game. It was over by halftime. It was a very pleasurable game to watch. Football wood.

    27-24 win at Las Vegas?

I thought the Bucs won 45-20…

    WTF?

I love Chucky for that SB win….but I think he’s washed up now.

  5. Kentucky Buc Says:

Swing and a miss. Gruden has some good points though. Balance is always good.

  6. August 1976 Buc Says:

The game against the Raiders was close late, then the Bucs pulled away. GO BUCS!!!!

  7. SKBucsfan Says:

I’d feel more confident having Chucky on the sideline calling plays vs the other guy.

  8. David Says:

Buc1987- Where do you see anyone saying it was 27 to 24?

And everyone else on here seems to forget, the buck in the raider game was not a blowout.
The game was 24-20 with 8 minutes left.

Just like the Falcons in the last game of the year. That was a 3 point game with less than 9 minutes left.
In the end, they both looked like blowouts, but they weren’t.

Same thing with the Saints playoff game. The Bucs iced a few games late that looked like blowouts but they were not.
I am really hoping they get off to a fast start in the Super Bowl

    SKBUCSFAN ?????

You’d be more confident with Chucky checking down to a running back the entire game than the current offense? You are out of your mind.
I love Chucky but he was also the same guy who didn’t know how to get Joey Galloway and Antonio Bryant on the field at the same time. His quote.

  10. Bucszntkt Says:

Chucky is calling Ronald Jones a “big back “, sounds like he hasn’t paid much attention to the team since the matchup, understandable.

I also think Chucky is overrated . I think we are in fine hands with BL and TB. They got us to this point .

I’m still mad at Chucky for tearing that team apart. Letting Lynch, then Sapp leave. That defense would have would have won several more super bowls. In my opinion, Chucky is good to bring into a good situation, but not to build a team. I think this is a tough game but I can’t wait!! Go Bucs!! We can win, but we have to play well on both sides of the ball!! Go Bucs!!

  12. zzbuc Says:

    CHucky today is total garbage!!!!
Used to be very good, not no more!!!

  13. OBF Says:

Chucky is probably saying the same sweet nothings to the Chief fans too

  14. MadMax Says:

    Heres the key….

    Our D ranked #1 in rushing D
    Chiefs D ranked 22nd in rushing D

2 tight end sets, play action pass, run, run dink and dunk here and there…keep fresh legs with the wideouts since we have 5, and keep them guessing.

So I agree, been telling this to all my work buddies, we need to eat up clock and keep mahomes off the field…but dont play scared. They cant double all our WR’s and TE’s, if theres a shot, you take it….Brady will know.

And my secret weapon….goal line short yardage situation, say 2nd and 3, put Big V in as RB have LF or ROJO behind him and run towards WIRFS…thats a guaranteed TD!

  15. Hodad Says:

Gruden is right. Pound the rock!!

Sounds like you dont know your Bucs. Jones is a big back. Not sure how you measure size but he’s the same size as Fournette. I’d call that big. Dont believe the weight the internet tells ya. He’s put on 20 lbs of muscle since being drafted.

  17. Buc1987 Says:

David …it’s been fixed…the original article said the Bucs beat the Raiders 27-24.

The Article still has this at the very top….to prove my point : ” and he lost a tight game to the Bucs.”

    What tight game? 45-20?

  18. 1sparkybuc Says:

Gruden should never have been anything more than an OC. He made promises he had no intention of keeping. Players couldn’t take him at his word. He sucked at judging talent, and his limited success was with QBs other coaches had trained. He inherited a legendary D and the 19 player turnover filled in some gaps on the offense. He couldn’t maintain it. He passed on Aaron Rodgers in the draft. I appreciate 2002, but it could have been so much if we had had the right HC.

  19. Kobe Faker Says:

“Building a team and being a head coach is 2 totally different things

2 different hats and Gruden should stop wearing the Oakland hat

over and over again very good head coaches prove they suk at building teams”

    Kobe Faker

  20. D1 Says:

    1sparky,

If you recall the team believed they had Bill Parcells locked up as their head coach. Gruden wasn’t on their minds (Glazers) until Parcells declined to sign on the bottom line after he had committed verbally.

The question is then how much better a job would Parcells have done had he come aboard?

  21. 1sparkybuc Says:

D1. Parcels did it twice. No respect for a man who doesn’t keep his word. I think his assistants might have been more responsible for the Giants’ success.

  22. unbelievable Says:

Wasn’t a blowout until the final 10 min or so. Pretty close up til that point

  23. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I agree with Gruden a lot that the best way to beat Mahomes, is to keep him off the field with a ball control power running game.

  24. lambchop Says:

Chucky is right. And if there’s one X Factor, it’s that it is rare for Tom Brady to lose multiple times to the same team. I don’t count losing to the Saints in week 1, as we were still trying to figure things out.
