The Rebound Of Sean Murphy-Bunting

January 29th, 2021

Bruce Arians shares intel.

Joe was impressed by the play of Sean Murphy-Bunting last year as a rookie. All he did was make plays.

SMB led the team with three picks. Yeah, it’s only three. But remember how awful that pass defense was for the first two months of the season.

This year, SMB seems to have regressed. Joe doesn’t know if that was because there was virtually no offseason and he couldn’t carry over his good play until August or what. But man, SMB has really turned it around in the playoffs.

SMB matched Ed Reed’s record for getting an interception in each of three playoff games. It would be so cool if he extends that a week from Sunday.

Yesterday, Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians was asked SMB’s turnaround.

Arians suggested SMB is healthy now.

“Sean’s been playing through a bunch of injuries and I think most people don’t realize it,” Arians said. “When you get three picks against those guys [an XFL backup, Drew Brees and Aaron Rodgers], you should be playing with a ton of confidence. He’s playing extremely well right now outside and inside.”

In nine days, SMB will have the biggest test of his life. The biggest game of his life against arguably the NFL’s best quarterback.

Good thing he’s healthy and playing well.

Every should be laying on the line on every play …….. there are no second chances.

  2. BigPoppaBuc Says:

Both he and Carlton Davis have been banged up all season. That’s not necessarily something you want to advertise if you don’t have to. Same goes for Dean. All three are still very young and their potential is still very high. They’ve dialed in this postseason and it’s truly been the difference.

Let’s not overstate it. This is another game. Still 60 minutes. Still 11 players per side. The pressure is on KC. Not SMB.

  4. Liaastnfrmafar Says:

What’s up with David??? How bad us the hammy? That’s a huge loss. Kay had her KC sweatshirt on this morning. She’s gone against the Bucs last 3 PO games, that’s a good thing she can’t pick winners.

  5. Stanglassman Says:

People should should but don’t consider that lots of these guys aren’t fully healthy before trashing these players.

  6. Sport Says:

The Bucs took out the top two seeds as a wild card team. Exercised the Saints demons and took out Rodgers.

Thank You SMB! Keep it going!

    In BA I Trust!

I’m hoping for another good game out of SMB….and Davis

But I’m expecting a great game from Devin White…..

  8. Wesley Says:

He still makes lots of bone-headed mistakes. Don’t let the 3 int’s disguise that.

    Works for me, anyway

    Go Bucs!

  10. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Agreed Wesley.
I’m ecstatic about his production in the playoffs but I still remember how lost he looked for most of the season.
Maybe it has finally clicked for him, I hope so, but maybe he’s been lucky?
Fans are too quick to anoint players as great and also too quick to condemn.

I hope he has his best game in the SB.
    Mahommes is no joke.

he’s coming around…ive been impressed with his play lately….

    GO BUCS!!!!

SMB has been on fire 🔥. Bucs defense is peaking at the right time! Bucs offense is peaking at the right time! Bucs 34 KC 31

This team has still not played a complete game all season long. They have been bringing it to a boil on this win streak with one game left. Chiefs are down 2 tackles. I think the pass rush gets there, they find a way to keep the deep threat neutralized, and Brady and the offense rolls. I see a big win and an exclamation point win on the biggest season in Buc history. This story has written itself all season long. Very entertaining to watch.

My frustration with SMB this season was that he was playing not to get beat deep. He would play soft and allow underneath stuff to happen, then trh to make a tackle. He was playing too soft. He has been playing so much more aggressive the last 4-6 weeks and it is awesome.

Dean had the opposite problem, he was playing way too aggressive. He seems to have found a happy middle also, which is huge.

I personally think our best bet is to have davis matched against kelce and have dean play man press on hill with safety help over the top. Chip kelce with an end on the way to the qb, and keep mahomes in the pocket. No easy task for anyone, but we are playing in the SB, its not supposed to be easy.

  16. m0j0 Says:

I credit Bowles. He is coaching these guys up. Also, he’s letting SMB play the way he knows best, man to man press coverage.

  17. stpetebucsfan Says:

I always felt SMB had talent but gambled too much. He seems to have learned to know when to fold em and when to hold em.

I’m hoping that Whitehead feels good by game time and Devin White is on fire
Those two may make Mahomes regret taking off on foot when they catch up to him.

  18. firethecannons Says:

He has learned how to cheat better and the better a cornerback gets at that then the better he gets

  19. JimmyJack Says:

His plays have been mega huge.

You could make a case that each one of his picks was the deciding factor.

One thing about the defensive rebuild was that every guy they drafted has all the same thing in common…..They hunt the football and create turnovers.

The one thing that sticks out to me with Tidd Bowles defense is the turnovers. Always making big plays. We need to keep it up SB55. And I think our offense can stop K.C. from doing the same. One big pkay from our defense could be all we need!

    GO BUCS!!!!!
