Overhyped?

January 5th, 2021

Forgotten.

The pass rush of the Redskins sort of reminds Joe what once was written about Van Halen in their prime.

The legendary rock band, a writer once typed, was a two-headed monster. David Lee Roth made the most noise so he got the most attention. But it was Eddie Van Halen, often hiding in Roth’s shadow, that made the music.

Chase Young is the Redskins’ version of Roth. He barks the loudest so more people hear and listen. He bounced off the turf of Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday night after beating the tanking Eagles (ooohhh, what an uphill struggle!) hollering that he wanted a piece of park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, handshake-stiffing, jet-ski-losing, biscuit-baking Bucs quarterback Tom Brady.

But is another Redskins defensive end the Eddie Van Halen of the strong Washington defensive line? Perhaps.

NFL fans don’t hear a lot about Montez Sweat. He will be lining up opposite of Bucs right tackle Tristan Wirfs. While rookie Young has an Adrian Clayborn-like 7.5 sacks, Sweat leads the Redskins with nine.

Young, who has four sacks in his last six games, is a tremendous talent, no question. But for all his woofing, shouldn’t the Bucs worry more about the guy in the background, Sweat?

Kevin O’Donnell, long-time sports anchor for WTVT-TV Channel 13 took to Twitter and scoffed at the hyped Redskins pass rush.

O’Donnell has a good point. If the Redskins have such a great pass rush, well what about the Bucs’?

Will the Bucs have their hands full Saturday night blocking Young, Sweat and friends? Sure.

But so too will the punchless Redskins offense. And maybe Sunday morning, the narrative won’t be the Redskins suffocating Brady, but the Bucs’ pass rush being unchained.

Wirfs will handle the right side fine.

  2. Robert Says:

lol veteran vs. Wirfs the rookie and rookie vs. vet Smith.

Me thinks the rooks will fair better, but I like Wirfs style of letting his play speak for itself.

  3. BucsMinisiterFuller Says:

The cramming of a Van Halen into this article is dumb and i feel dumb for trying to read it.

  4. Bird Says:

Mack is the only defensive end that has bested wirfs this year
    Should be a good matchup

  5. Cannon Says:

I wish we had White for this game. He’s a big time contributor to that sack total.

  6. FactTeller Says:

They played in Philly not Washington

  7. 74 Bucs Fan Says:

Our Oline is mean and nasty and will handle these “first round drafted studs”. Go watch ABs first touchdown last game and see Donovan Smith completely rag doll some dude. You think Jensen, Marpet, Cappa and the gang are intimidated by these dudes? Not a chance. Washington’s offensive line and offense looks below average and they should be the ones concerned.

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I’m a bit tired of all these articles about the WFT Dline……Chase Young & Co….

What about our front 7?…….Doesn’t Alex Smith have a few worries also?

  9. patrickbucs Says:

agree 74 Bucs. I hope we can establish some quick screens to AB and Godwin to take the pressure off early and and then some rb draws to loosen their inexperienced d-line up a bit and confuse them.

  10. Rob in Land O Lakes Says:

BucsMinisterFuller: You don’t disrespect Van Halen on this site! After the Joe’s and I kick you off of our lawn and tell you how escrow works, you’re grounded young man!

    Sincerely,

  11. Buc Bro Says:

Van Halen is awful and overhyped.

Chase Young is promising but playing against playoff teams like the Rams, Seattle and Browns he went sackless

The Washington Defense lost by 15 to AZ, 14 to the Browns, 14 to the Ravens and by 20 to the Rams. Giving up 30 points or more to each team. When they face a good offense they get scored on.

Let’s stop acting like they are the love child of the 85 Bears and the 2002 Bucs.

Respect your opponent but do not fear them.

  12. Dewey Selmon Says:

Maybe Sweat should take a look at the players Wirfs went against and the results. Advantage: Wirfs

  13. DoooshLaRue Says:

So Joe, if you liken the Redskins DL to Van Halen and Chase Young as DLR and Montez Sweat as EVH does it also follow that the Buc’s OL can be Van Halen members too?

If so, I think Durable Donny Smith is like Gary Cherone!
    Ali Marpet as Michael Anthony?

  14. Bucsfanman Says:

Anybody ever notice that small dogs generally bark the most?
We have faced MANY fearsome pass-rushers. Yes, the OL will have to be up to the task. But, lets be honest, this isn’t Reggie White and Charles Haley we’re talking about here.
Be prepared. Don’t look at their record. FOCUS.

  15. Buxszntkt Says:

Buc Bro you have no clue if you think Eddie Van Halen is overhyped !!!
Google the song “eruption” where he picks the fretboard only to play the music. You have no clue about guitarists ,
But anyway, is Devin White definitely ineligible to return Sat. Night ?

  16. Mitch Says:

7 of Montez’s 9 sacks have come against bottom tier or beat up olines. Chase Young’s 7.5!sacks came against poor or beat up olineman as well. Infact neither of them have a sack against a winning team this year.

I’m not saying they aren’t talented and couldn’t cause problems. All I am saying is they have yet to prove themselves. Bucs have an all pro on the right tackle in Wirfs, a talented and mostly above average LT (Save for the penalties/consistency issue), an all pro left guard in Marpet, and a mean center in Jensen / Right Guard Cappa has had a quiet season (which is good for oline). I tend to like the Bucs chances Saturday.

  17. 813bucboi Says:

damn joe…your disrespect is insane and sad….The Washington Football Team….is that so hard?….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  18. 813bucboi Says:

i think WASH front4 deserves all the hype….

no need for the bucs to overlook them….its a new season…PLAYOFFS BABY!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  19. danr Says:

we may have one more sack than their team, but i would wager they do it without blitzing a third as much as we do.

That is the reason to be impressed.

  20. LargoBuc Says:

I get it. It’s Washington DC. It’s former Ohio State second overall pick Chase Young. He’s talking smack about a qb the media says you should hate on a team the media says shouldn’t exist. So of course the FT is going to get all the hype blah blah blah.
Screw that! Brady needs to give the kid what he asked for! The O line needs to hit him hard! They don’t want to respect our pass rush? Make em respect it!

  21. Mitch Says:

Bucs are second in the league with 268 called blitzes. The Washington DC team is 14th with 195… It gets a little closer when you do Blitz% which is based on total number of pass attempts. Bucs are 5th at 39% and the Washington team is 12 at 32.5%. Bucs definitely blitz more to get home and they have gotten half of their sacks on those Blitzes…. the Bucs defense is also number one in giving up TD’s on called blitzed too… they lead the league with 14 TD’s given up.

  22. TampaTown Says:

And still the Eagles- the EAGLES- would have won if their coach didn’t quit

  23. Bobby M. Says:

I dont know but i feel like the dink & dunk QBs that get the ball out and have a little bit of mobility are the ones that give us fits. I wont be shocked if Washington gives a fight.

  24. Cobraboy Says:

Fact is about the only hope the TFKATR have to advance in the playoffs is to pressure Brady, especially up the middle, into making mistakes. That has worked before, hasn’t it, Saints, Bears and Rams?

  25. JimbobBucsFan Says:

Some max protect from the left side in “obvious” situations should take care of Young. As for Sweat coming off the right side, Wirfs has allowed only one sack all season.

Should be a fun game to watch from a defensive standpoint. Not to mention our intensely hot offense.

I’m guessing that we will have to go to Lambeau Field next week.

    Go Bucs! Kick some arse!

  26. Cobraboy Says:

I like how Arians is talking up the FTFKATR DL, especially the rook.

    Mind games.

  27. Seattle Buc is back in TB Says:

I’m going to be the homer and Say D Smith is going to kick up another gear and *ss stomp that rookie all game long.

  28. Sumosam Says:

Thanks for the Van Halen. He was the best and is missed already. The Bucs are going to win this game. Take it to the bank.

  29. Doctor Stroud Says:

More disrespect for the Buccaneers. We’ll do our talking after the game, like Coach Gruden’s famous speech about all the “hype” about Michael Vick. Not one word will be said this week about how you are going to stop this offense!

  30. View from 132 Says:

I expect a similar game to the Bucs vs Green Bay in the 1997 Divisional Round, except now we have the great QB and Washington has the young and up and coming defense. Washington will put up a fight with a good D-line, but the Bucs D should be able to crush the Washington offense or they aren’t a contender anyway.

    Bucs 28, Non-Skins 18.

  31. adam from ny Says:

sweat is the better baller at this point…

    but hey guys:

get ready to meet tristan “the wall” wirfs

    #WallWirfs

  32. Rod Munch Says:

The Redskins will only have to worry about the Bucs pass rush if they actually blitz, because just rushing 4, the Bucs get no pressure. Bowles is going to have to find his balls and start blitzing again, otherwise Alex Smith is going to look like Drew Brees and pick apart this defense if they’re just sitting back in a soft zone, like Bowles has called as the Bucs defense has tumbled in the rankings.

  33. rrsrq Says:

Sweat is long and gets his hands up in outlet passing zones, so that quick throw to wideouts that BL likes to call, TB just better know where he is

  34. Oneilbucs Says:

I’m not worried about the Washington offense it’s their defense. But their offense will hurt them this game . But I’m not going to over look them because remember the saints against the Seahawks . The saints was 13 and 3 and the Seahawks was 7 and 9 and the Seahawks won . So I’m not going to over look them either and the team shouldn’t over look them either . But we should win !!!

  35. $acbuc$ Says:

If the coaching staff dont chip him and put Gronk on his head then he deserve to eat. If Donovan let the rookie embarrass him in the playoffs he should be benched for Wells during the game. Then tell him to go clean his locker out after the plane land. Ask me why I got more faith in Tristan right now. Mr I’m a left tackle better not mess this up for us.

  36. pewterpirate99 Says:

You know I’m getting really sick and tired of hearing how “great” this REDSKINS defensive line is. The narrative for this game really reminds of the Bucs Super Bowl year when we played the Falcons and the human highlight reel, dog murdering Michael Vick week 14. Remember how all week long the talk was how are the Bucs going to be able to deal with the great Michael Vick. All the talking heads and everyone in the media had the Bucs losing before the game was even played.

Then the game took place and our beloved Bucs defense stomped and shellacked Michael Vick and the Falcons 34-10, particularly Derrick Brooks. I vividly remember seeing the footage of Jon Gruden talking to the team after the win and saying, “They talked about the great Michael Vick, he’s a great talent. How are you going to stop Michael Vick, how you going to stop him.” “Not one word was said about how somebody was going to stop this defense…..remember that!” I really feel that same feeling about this up coming match up with the REDSKINS.

Now I know this years defense is not that beloved Bucs defense of 2002 and we won’t have my favorite player on the team Devon White, but this years defense is damn good and I truly believe they’re going to kick it up a few notches for this playoff game. I truly am not afraid of the inept REDSKINS offense and their PEG LEG quarter back Alex Smith. In my opinion this game will not be as close as some “experts” are predicting.
