Mike Smith Praises Todd Bowles

The man who presided over the best third-down defense during the 2016 NFL season is also the same dude who oversaw a train wreck of a Bucs defense the following year before getting fired five games into the 2018 campaign.
Joe’s talking about former Bucs defensive coordinator Mike Smith. Nice guy. Shameful finish to his coaching career.
Smith made a rare appearance on national radio this week and was asked about the defense that used to belong to him.
“Todd Bowles put his mark on it and it’s been fun to watch them,” Smith said on CBS Sports Radio. “They’re young. They’re energetic. They’ve got a rotation up front that makes it difficult, and they led the league in stopping the run. These young guys in their secondary have really stepped up. Really, they were probably the reason they [beat the Saints]. Those turnovers were the big, big turning point in that ballgame.”
Unlike like Lovie Smith, Mike Smith seemed happy to talk about his former team. He praised the Bucs’ formula of mind-blowing depth at wide receiver that makes the Tom Brady Experience so successful.
And Smith said he’s very much looking forward to “another old timers game” on Sunday with Brady and Aaron Rodgers.
It’s so rare for Smith to do an interview, so Joe had to type it up.
And for those Bucs fans hoping Smith gets another NFL defensive coordinator gig, Smith said he’s definitely retired, playing a ton of golf and fishing.

Well good for him. Hope he enjoys retirement. I’m sure he’s doing ok even if that last stint hurt his pride a bit. He seems humble enough to get past it and a good guy

Off subject, but Jack Cichy is on IR again…..injured in first quarter of Saints game……a very aggressive & talented kid but the most injury prone I’ve ever seen…..we need to move on from Jack…..best of luck….

I don’t miss Mike Smith’s awful defences at all. OTOH, I have to think having a fat bank and no bigger decision than choosing a tee time, or where to drop a line is a pretty swuft retirement.

Think of how far we’ve come in just two short years. We’ve gone from watching Press Box Smitty’s (remember that moniker?) defense get roasted up and down the field playing nine yards of the receivers to watching Todd Bowles’ defense absolutely shut down Drew Brees like we literally have never seen throughout his time in New Orleans.
Imagine telling us two years ago after two straight awful seasons that’d we be playing in the NFC Championship Game. Really amazing stuff.

That Bears game in 2018 still gives me PTSD!! The way Trubisky obliterated our defense, which played mostly zone! One of the worst defensive performances in team history, in my opinion!

Mike Smith took Glazer team for a final ride like so many other players and staff. Enough to pad the bank account then retire. His opinion is worth nothing–as his defensive scheme was awful.

There’s a reason he doesn’t give many interviews……. cause noone’s asking him for one. He probably had to pay for that little spot he got!
