“I Don’t Know Why Scotty Miller Doesn’t Play More”‘

January 22nd, 2021

A man paid to dissect film of every NFL game is a little perplexed.

One guy on the Pro Football Focus payroll has legitimate credentials. He’s former Bucs, Rams, Browns, Raiders, Bengals and Steelers quarterback Bruce Gradkowski. After 11 years in the NFL, Gradkowski is paid by the PFF Tribe to grade all quarterbacks and he also works for SiriusXM NFL Radio.

On the air this week, Gradkowski, an ex-teammate of Antonio Brown, wondered aloud by one Buccaneer doesn’t get a ton of snaps.

“I don’t know why Scotty Miller doesn’t play more,” said Gradkowski, who also talked about how much rookie receiver Tyler Johnson helped boost the confidence Tom Brady has in him with his big third-down catch on Sunday.

Joe is intrigued to see how much work Miller gets in Green Bay. The Packers won’t drop two safeties deep in coverage like New Orleans did, and there should be more opportunities for the deep shots Miller specializes in.

I don’t know why Bruce Gradkowski can’t read a depth chart

  2. Mitch Says:

He doesn’t play more because ME, CG, AB, Gronk, & Cam.

  3. zzbuc Says:

Well, because he has phenomenal players before him…… Probably AB will not be here anymore and he will have more chances along Tyler Johnson….I love Miller, he is a great player and tons of potential, but he will never be before ME or CG or AB….Is not Rocket science….

  4. Alanbucsfan Says:

    Can Miller block?

  5. Hawk Says:

I would think that a ‘4-wide’ formation with AB and Scotty lining up wide on each side would get the Packers calling for an ‘unsportsmanlike conduct’ flag.

  6. August 1976 Buc Says:

It would be good to take 2-3 deep shots to Scotty, it would not hurt at all. Now about over all playing time, Scotty dosen’t have 6 100 catch seasons like AB. GO BUCS!!!!

  7. buc15 Says:

He doesn’t get more PT because we are stupid deep at WR…that’s why

  8. Listnfrmafar Says:

Miller seems to be a deep pass route speed guy where as the starters playing over him are pro bowlers if not future pro bowlers also more experienced. Not sure why Miller is not a return guy on special teams though. As far as Johnson simple experience and not yet 100% proven, he will get his time. Let’s face it if you’re Tom Brady, do you want to throw to Miller & Johnson or ME, CG, Gronk & AB,.apparently Brady shown the love for Brate. Look what AB did while ME was hurt.

  9. PSL Bob Says:

    Hawk – that’s funny!

  10. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The answer is that for Miller to play more one of two things would have to happen.

He would need to replace Evans, Godwin or AB.. Or,

We would have to play without either a TE or RB…..that’s what happens when you go 4 wide…

  11. Infomeplease Says:

I’ll settle for 2 plays a game from Scotty if they go for 50 yards and a TD each!!!! GO BUCS!!!!!!

  12. SOEbuc Says:

Incompetent coaching. Just like not using RoJo. 4-1 when RoJo gets at least 17 carries. 23 carries 117 yards 2 TD week six vs GB. GB gives up 4.6 yards per carry.

    #POUNDTHEROCK!!!

  13. Jmarkbuc Says:

Because of our depth, and Scotty really only has one arrow in the quiver . The fly pattern.

  14. DoooshLaRue Says:

    No one knows….

    Scotty doesn’t know.

  15. TSmitty300 Says:

It is because Scotty is a one trick pony. It is no knock on Scotty, but he can’t do what AB does. AB has the entire route tree and can take a slant to the house. Scotty will always be a rotation guy. Nothing wrong with that

  16. 813bucboi Says:

miller has to get better at route running…lattimore almost had a INT because miller rounded off his route…

he has a role and he’s mastering it….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  17. Bird Says:

    Doooshlarue

Nice eurotrip reference /quote. A movie matt damon makes a cameo in out of the blue!
    😂

  18. SlyPirate Says:

Bucs can’t afford to resign Evans, Godwin, AB, and Gronk (without sacrificing the defense), so Miller will get a lot more PT next year.

  19. Beeej Says:

Be a shame to lose Scotty when his rookie contract is up

  20. Show Me the TDs Says:

    @Leighroy, that’s funny! 🤣

  21. Defense Rules Says:

Beej … Miller doesn’t become a free agent until 2023, so he’s got 2 more years with us at rookie $$$. A lot will change roster-wise between now & then.

What’s impressive about Scotty IMO is the progress he’s made between his rookie year & this year. Was targeted twice as much this year (53 vs 26) but did significantly better catching the ball (62.3% this year as opposed to 50.0% last year). And a goodly percentage of those were hard-to-catch deep balls, so his pass-catching has really improved I think. His yards/reception stayed just about the same (15.2 Y/R this year vs 15.4 Y/R last year) … almost exactly the same as Mike Evans numbers (15.5 Y/R career average). Scotty’s a keeper.

  22. Brandon Says:

Next year with AB definitely gone and Miller likely to get the #3 WR position to himself with Johnson likely being the top backup to and Godwin, Miller will really come on. He was on pace for 1000 yards after four games until injuries and AB stepped in the way. He’ll improve a little more next season and be a real threat to opposing defenses in 2021.

  23. DavidBigBucFan99 Says:

Unfortunately Scooter is a one trick pony and is only really good for one route. Don’t get me wrong, his ball tracking ability is insane but his speed is not fast enough to take the top off a defense as some people tend to think he can. He’s a small dude who can get pushed off his mark rather quickly but it would be nice to see him a few times because he does make some insane catches.

  24. Will Says:

Miller will be very good for us next year and beyond. As much as this coaching staff has developed players and we’re stacked at WR I would’ve liked to have seen Scotty be used as a returner. His speed alone makes him a better threat than Mickens who hasn’t shown a thing in the return game. Our special teams coach is the one I think isn’t earning his keep. He couldn’t develop Matt Gay who looks like a keeper for the Rams. Our coverage teams are worthless thank God Pinon puts all his kick offs through the end zone because we saw what happens during the Chicago game if a returner decides to bring the ball out. Our punt coverage is terrible heck what happened to all those plays Ryan Smith use to make on punt team?

  25. SOEbuc Says:

And Scooty only became a one trick pony after the GOAT arrived. We can get a good trade deal next year for him. Godwin, Evans, and Johnson you got three very talented, very strong blockers on the field.

  26. Sorryjackchuckiesback Says:

AMEN!!! …. I think the reason they went on that losing skid was getting brown and ruining that connection Miller had worked on all off-season!! … At this point in their careers I would take Miller over Brown

  27. Listnfrmafar Says:

I guess we’ll find out Sunday how good they are .

  28. Bucs Says:

He doesn’t play more because he’s not got great hands or ball security. Yeah, he can run with anyone, but every pass to him, even a curl or a slant, is a 50-50 ball. Tyler Johnson, on the other hand, does deserve more snaps. Although we have great receivers and running backs, it’s maddening to see how many passes from the GOAT this team drops.

  29. Coburn Says:

Well one positive. Him and Johnson have some darn fresh legs this far into the post season and all

  30. Dbbuc711 Says:

“I’m so proud of you son”
    “Thanks Dad”
