Great To Have An Open Mind

December 24th, 2020

Bucs OC Byron Leftwich.

In Joe’s mind, the absolute worst coach (in any sport) is the type who thinks he has everything figured out, won’t listen to anyone (in particular, players) and doesn’t try to learn and adapt.

In that respect, Joe has a lot of respect for Bucs offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich.

Now we may sit here and complain about predictable playcalls or how his (?) offense looks unprepared to start week after week, or how his (?) offense is woeful in maxing its considerable talent.

Yesterday in his weekly presser, Leftwich said something about working with park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting, handshake-stiffing, jet-ski-losing, biscuit-baking Bucs quarterback Tom Brady that made Joe want to doff his cap to Leftwich in respect.

It seems Leftwich is trying to learn about the game from Brady as much as Brady is learning how to run Leftwich’s (?) offense.

“His focus on the detail [and] the little things get him through,” Leftwich said about Brady’s significant resume. “We’re always in communication because you’re always trying to learn the player as best you can.

“I’m always trying to ask him why he does this or why he does that. He’s preparing himself to be a quarterback in this league and he’s been doing it at a high level for a long time.”

You know, that’s very big of Leftwich and sadly, Joe knows of too many coaches who would never stoop to ask a player why he does certain things. That say a lot of about Leftwich in Joe’s eyes.

And it sort of reinforces the notion that Brady has final say on what goes on with the offense.

Quit running up the middle virtually every first down. That’s not Brady. Go Bucs!

  2. ModHairKen Says:

Honesty is rarely revealed to the media.

  3. Roy T. Buford Says:

He’s just not been good at his job. That’s really all I can say.

  4. Casual Observer Says:

Like few others, Brady is a coach on the field. Nice.

  5. Doctor Stroud Says:

Stafford is likely auditioning for about 8-10 teams looking for a QB. One of those teams could possibly be the Bucs next year. That being said, the game plan on offense should be to run the ball, hit the receivers on quick routes so that Brady doesn’t get hit, and keep the clock running. Keep it out of Stafford’s hands! Merry Christmas!

  6. Jmarkbuc Says:

Sounds like leftfoot is unnecessary… Maybe TB is wasting to much time explaining to him what winning QB’s do.

This article did nothing to increase respect for my left foot .

  7. Davenport Buc Says:

The mark of an average coach is to adapt his scheme to the talent he has.

The mark of a good coach is that his team is prepared to play well, week after week

The mark of a great coach is that his team will unleash their full talent from the opening whistle

BA, TB, BL are barely average coaches and our losses are almost entirely on them

  8. Bucsfan951 Says:

Listen, do I think BL is the worst play caller? No I do not. Do I think the Bucs can find someone better? Absolutely! Thank god he is no Marcus Arroyo!

  9. PSL Bob Says:

The offense seems to hum along best when its up by a score or two. In part, that’s when the defense tends to take control of the game, thus giving the offense more opportunities with the ball and build momentum. If the Bucs could just break out of the gate faster, they’d pretty much be unstoppable.

  10. unbelievable Says:

I don’t think it says that much. Leftwich is learning how to do the job on the fly b/c he is under qualified, plus Brady is 50x the QB that Leftwich ever was…

  11. 407buc Says:

No need to sugarcoact it.. Leftwich sucks as a coach/playcaller. To be at the helm of such an inconsistent offense with all these weapons is unacceptable. And the people that don’t criticize this glaring fact are part of the problem we should not be having issues at this stage

  12. Bobby M. Says:

Nearly every offensive minded coach is looking for insight of what the QB is seeing or feeling. The Bucs got hosed on the deal for Arians…..Leftwich isn’t ready so we’re having to go through his learning curve and frankly he may never be all that good. I 1000% believe Leftwich knows the game….he’s played it and now coached but the game within the game, he’s terrible at. You’re either leading or chasing and every offense he’s managed is in a constant state of chasing from behind. In the past the blame feel on Rosen being a rookie, then Winston being turnover prone….but with Brady he has no excuses. Leftwich is the common denominator in the problem.

Joe did you see this. I thought it was on the mark. Merry Christmas.

[Page down John, and thanks. — Joe]

    Next head coach of Jets!

  15. Alanbucsfan Says:

Bucs rank 11th of current 14 playoff teams in total offense- 0nly Washington, Pittsburgh and Miami are worse.
Bucs rank 13th of current 14 playoff teams in rushing – only Pittsburgh is worse.
In the NFL, Only Houston, Detroit and Pittsburgh are worse than Bucs in rushing yards per game.

The reason the Bucs offense starts slow is because they can’t run the ball early in games.

  16. Chesapeake Bucco Says:

Brady has final say on what goes on with the offense? I highly doubt that. Certainly he has a major influence, but he is not (yet) a coach.

  17. Buc You Says:

Too bad the QB has to train the QB coach… must be distracting.

  18. Listnfrmafar Says:

BL is not qualified for the talent he’s been blessed with. Not every ex-player can coach. He’s proven that. The only way Bucs win will be from talent because if we’re lucky to see Payton, Reid, McVay, etc. They will eat his lunch and Reids def not that good.

  19. lambeau Says:

Leftwich seems to be a very nice, modest man who, as Churchill said of Atlee, has a great deal to be modest about.
A potentially great team flounders, and Bucs fans suffer, as BA induges his desire to take it easy, preserve his health, and mentor a beginner.

  20. orlbucfan Says:

Not sure if the fault is Arians or Leftwich. There is so much talk going down about who calls what on offense. Is it Arians, Leftwich, or Methuselah?

  21. BigMacAttack Says:

You mean a coach like Lovie? 😂

  22. Jmarkbuc Says:

I would be more comfortable with Methuselah, his six rings, and his quest for perfection in all things to call the offense than Mr. Golf cart snd his left foot.

Tampa’s very own Thelma and Louise…

  23. onetrickpony Says:

    player teaching coach? wtf
turn Brady lose,I’m sure he might know more about it than BL
