The Rise Of Carlton Davis

October 13th, 2020

Bucs CB Carlton Davis

Yeah, Bucs cornerback Carlton Davis might very well be too handsy. He seems to get flagged once a game for interference or holding.

But Joe can live with the penalties if a player balls out. The problem gets to be if a player is just OK yet always gets penalties. Then, what’s the point?

Davis is rounding out to becoming the Bucs’ shutdown corner. He had another good game in Chicago — yes, with a flag — but again, overall play wins out.

Davis is tied for the NFL lead in picks with three. Davis also ranks sixth in the NFL in passes defensed and he has three tackles-for-loss to add to his 2020 resume, which is quite good for a corner.

No, Joe doesn’t like the weekly flag(s) from Davis. But what Joe very much likes is Davis’ body of work.

He is playing winning football that’s all you can ask for. I know I would have killed to have any corner playing at this level over the past 5 years.

  2. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    I’ll accept a flag & a pick from a DB…..anytime……

I think Dean is developing nicely as is SMB (Chicago game notwithstanding)

  3. Bobby M. Says:

He gets flagged but the guy is covering the best WRs in the league every game and having pretty solid success.

  4. 813bucboi Says:

CDs flags always come at the wrong time…..

sorta like a previous player throwing INTs at the wrong time….

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  5. Buc Bro Says:

I’d be a bigger fan if maybe on 3rd downs he kept his hands to himself. Those penalties that extend drives are killer

  6. Shorttrooper Says:

Davis is an example of bad coaching. He has good coverage. He’s in good position. But he just uses his hands in completely unnecessary ways that LOOK bad to the refs. The coahes need to teach him how to keep him from doing that.

  7. zzbuc Says:

Slightly better than average……If he wants to reach next level, he has to improve zone coverage and obviously less penalties, The problem is when you compare him to VHIII, , he looks like superman

  8. Guadalajara, Mexico fan Says:

I have seen improvement in Carlton, but he is still having troubles following the ball. Stead of looking at the ball and does a clean defense, he usually goes behind the receiver without looking the ball and that is why he has penalties. Still work to do on him. Home DC and his staff can eliminate the penalties that he does.

  9. diggler Says:

We knew this. The instinct of this guy are phenomenal. His body control is at times super human. Long arms and strength on the press are very good. He can make the likes of Julio Jones’s (sp) lol of the world have to work for every inch. Love the guy. Most of all ATTITUDE. You don’t want to fight this guy in a dark alley.

  10. Youngbucs Says:

Ndog this sh$t is so boring stop making every thread about your bullsh$t. Can you discuss anything about a player without it.

  11. Beeej Says:

Davis didn’t deserve the flag he had in the most recent game

  12. Ndog Says:

YoungBucs that’s what the clueless has been doing for the last 5 years.

    Sucks doesn’t it!!!

  13. Coburn Says:

Agreed that flag was bs…. If that’s how they’re gonna call it just have Miller book it down the field then slam on the breaks every snap

  14. Will Says:

Only because of what we’ve had for years are people OK whith this. He’s a good corner and will be elite IF AND ONLY IF he cuts out the penalties. He’s developing a rep of a shut down corner but also a rep of a penalty machine. I’m not OK with his penalties because they keep drives alive and always end in points. You want to be elite and be respected as one of the best corners in the league shut guys down but don’t hurt your team with penalties in the process. Think about it like this we’re in the Superbowl game on the line up by 2. The other team has 4th and 9 a first down puts them in field goal range. Are we still OK with Carlton’s 1 penalty a game?

  15. AJ Says:

Dude is ballin’ man!! I hate the flags too, the one the other night was a garbage call. But all the great d-backs get away with being handsy. Hopefully Carlton will start to earn that reputation from the refs…

  16. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

You mean the rise of Carlton Davis’s pass interference calls. He gets like 2 a game!

  17. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

YoungBucs to be fair to Ndog, even if he never said another word about Winston up jette, the outright haters who solely blame him for all of our losses would still bring him up, and they are the hypocrites he says they are. Then again you are right his constant campaign trail he blazes up here is quite boorish!

Boy,there’s a surprise. NDogTurd turns another article that has nothing to with #3 into a post about #3.
That’s why your opinions smell like a dog turd NDogTurd.

I wish JDean would quit playing timid. He has the height and size to compete with the best but I think he plays with a lack of belief and maturity. If he just go out and play back yard football he’ll be a beast of a DB. His size body posture kinda reminds me of former Bucs corner Myron Lewis and Juron Bolden, both were garbage as corners.

  20. unbelievable Says:

How could you possibly compare Dean to some worthless player like Myron Lewis? Dean has better instincts than Lewis could have even dreamed of.

Last year he was tied with several other players for the 4th most passes defended in the league, and he didn’t even start until week 11!!! This year He got beat on 1 big play, that’s it.

Myron Lewis lol. That dude couldn’t even catch a cold in a COVID ward.

  21. Rod Munch Says:

Davis has a ways to go to be a top top corner, the guy not only gets a lot of flags, he also gives up easy touchdowns. It’s not a knock on him since he always performs at a high level a lot of the time, but you need to be a lot more reliable to be talked about as a top shutdown corner. Ronde wasn’t getting flags all the time and giving up TDs, heck Davis has a ways to go to even be as good as Brian Kelly, but Kelly was incredibly underrated so that too isn’t a knock.

But anywho, just cut out the penalties and stop the mental lapses and I think Davis could end up being a top corner – he’s clearly got the talent.

  22. AtlBuc Says:

He held Michael “can’t check me” Thomas to 3 catches for 17 yards! That says it all. That guy has been torching us since he came into the league. Now, we got water for his torch!

  23. Brandon Says:

A flag is still better than giving up a TD. Also, several of his flags were extremely questionable. As his rep grows MAYBE he receives fewer flags… maybe he gets more.

Your analysis is garbage so there’s that. Dean had four passes defensed in the 2nd half on Thursday. He was top 5 in that category last year AND allowed only 50% completions on passes thrown his way. You need to talk less and learn more. You clearly don’t have a clue about this.
