Brady Quoted: “I’ve Been Begging To Get Brate On The Field More”

October 10th, 2020

Those who like to think about who’s in charge at One Buc Palace might find this interesting.

And others might be intrigued as well.

During Thursday night’s broadcast of the painful Bucs loss to the Bears — Joe’s not over it yet — announcer Joe Buck dropped a line that could represent a window into decision-making at team headquarters outside the Team Glazer cone of silence.

Buck and FOX cohort Troy Aikman chat with key figures on each team a day or two prior to a game they call, and Buck noted that Brady told him, “I’ve been begging to get [Cameron] Brate on the field more.”

Joe wrote that down the moment Buck said it. Does it mean Brady wanted to run more empty-backfield sets? More three tight-end personnel groupings when O.J. Howard was healthy? Did Brady think the tight end rotation should have been more even? And is that comment any shred of evidence that Brady doesn’t get his way, since Brate largely was stuck on the bench until Howard was lost for the season?

Brate is who Brady targeted on the final meaningful play of Thursday’s game on fourth down (third down?) with the Bucs driving for a winning score. Joe found that interesting, as well, with Mike Evans and Rob Gronkowski available.

Something to think about on a still-sad Saturday morning.

Ouch. But true. I am catching Total he!! up here by my buddies over that one.

  2. El Buco Realisto Says:

Some will call this the “good cop, bad cop” routine!!!!!!!! But the “real” fans know that it is “really” the “keystone cops” routine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. coverdeuce Says:

Better him than Tanner Hudson. Mind boggling how many targets/snaps that dude got when you’ve still got Brate on the roster.

  4. 407buc Says:

This offense hasn’t impressed me all year I don’t care about the “no offseason, they need time” BS. We are win now mode and if this is the best we have to offer then just clean house and start rebuilding next year. This is it

  5. WiscoJoe Says:

Joe, this L took the wind out of my sails for sure. Time to panic? No but I’m a little concerned about our pass defense after this last game. We also need Godwin back. How bad is his hamstring injury that he won’t do stuff until Thursday? I’m still curious as to why he was missing for those two days of practice before the season started.

  7. Pewter Power Says:

If mike Evans and Scotty Miller were healthy and Chris Godwin were on the field I would be a lot more worried. I am going to back off the automatic playoff birth until this team shows more offensive dominance against good defenses. We assumed fewer interceptions would mean better play but this coaching staff is not getting it done.

Can’t lead the league in penalties and expect to walk into the playoffs.

  8. bojim Says:

I’m with Brady. Put Brate out there.

  9. Hoops Says:

I’d think the GOAT would know a thing or two about who should be out there doing battle. Unfortunately, there are coaches like Lefty who are calling the shots with BA doing who knows what.

  10. Rayjay1122 Says:

I would think the GOAT would know what freaking down it is.

  11. Will Says:

Yes he did target Brate. Now watch the play again and watch Tyler Johnson come open before Brate. The read must’ve been from left to right because Johnson was coming from the right the catch would’ve been a 1st down with him having a chance to break a tackle and get us in field goal range. That loss is blamed on everyone. I’m not sure how the largest staff in the NFL is consistently outcoached on the little things. When all the penalties were being called during the crazy drive I’m screaming at the TV “take a timeout” they needed to calm things down just like in the NBA when a team makes a little run and your team is looking outta sorts the coach takes a timeout to regroup.

  12. Rayjay1122 Says:

I am so angry with this whole team right now other than ROJO, ME13 and Winfield. The rest all blew chunks all over Thursday night football. I also do nor think this team has a prayer with Donovan Smith starting. He single handedly can ruin a game. Even his body language screams I suck and I don’t care! I really can’t stand him as a football player.

  13. Thisisouryear!! Says:

I thought the same thing. Crate was Winston’s goto man before Arians. Maybe there’s something Brady loves about Brate too. He used to catch everything. I’d love to see him active in the offense again.

  14. tickrdr Says:

    OT, sorry.

Another missed call by the refs was the non-call of the obvious facemask penalty to Mickens following the Bears’ punt on the opening drive of the second half. Would have put the ball on the TB 47yd line to start that drive.

  15. Bobby M. Says:

I think what you’re getting whiffs of is Brady might be questioning Leftwich’s ability just a tad. There were some really suspect play calls, 2 mins left and we run once? 4 and 1 from our end of the field and we go for it yet 4th and 1 from their end and we kick a FG? Leftwich reminds me of Licht…..he tries to be too cute too often. Instead of taking the obvious, he’s always attempting some passing wizardry. Leftwich too me is not a good coordinator, seems like the next Adam Gase.

  17. bucsince79 aka bumaneer Says:

I’m still bummed out about this game… We should have won. Tough loss…

  18. Clean House Says:

I’ve been calling for Brate all along on many threads on this site.
If the Bucs somehow surpass my 6-10 prediction, it will be in spite of Coaching

  19. Clean House Says:

And why am I always in moderation Joe?
You don’t like hearing about 6-10 peredictions and 5109 yards from JW?

  20. webster Says:

BL does not make the decision to go for it or not on 4th down bobby. Come on buc fans you gotta be smarter than that.

  21. JimbobBucsFan Says:

The players are mostly (if not ALL as it should be) bummed out. However, the professionals among them will leave this game behind as well as our SIGNIFICANT loss of our nose tackle, Vita Vea, and move forward.

We will have a winning season and get into the playoffs for the first time in a long time.

    Go Bucs!

  23. Bucnjim Says:

I pretty much heard the same number called the entire night. 76! They even called a penalty on the wrong number once and who did it turn out to be? 76!

  24. StatGuy Says:

Guess what dotards, we are in first place and what Brady did on the sidelines was way past due. He ain’t licking fingers. I’m not sure who is calling plays at time it’s night and day sometimes. This is exactly what they needed before packers game. Now time to get healthy

  25. JimmyJack Says:

Joe Im guessing your not a Rays fan too. Watching us send the Yankees home last night in dramatic fashion sure did make it a lot easier to get over the bitter Bucs loss…….Now I just cant wait for the Bucs to get their hands on Green Bay to redeem themselves.

  26. Defense Rules Says:

JimmyJack … I really hope you’re right about redemption, but the Pack looks like it’s got a fairly decent team this year. Well if being 4-0 and having the #1 offense in the NFL is any indicator. Putting up an average of 38 PPG isn’t all that shabby. No TOs & Rodgers has been throwing at over 70%. They’ve been killing other teams in TOP also (34 mins to 26 mins). And oh ya, they’re coming off a Bye week & we’re still hurtin.

So how do you beat them? Piece of cake … score more points than they do. All that’ll take is for our Bucs to play near-perfect football, and certainly a LOT better than we have in any game this year offensively. Defensively, we’ll have to do what no one else has been able to do yet this year IMO. #1 – Shut down the run (Pack ran for 259 yds against the Lions). #2 – Pressure Rodgers (but using mostly our DLine with much less blitzing & a lot more man-to-man). #3 – Force TOs; several of them (they’ve had ONE as a team so far).

Hmmm, well JimmyJack I don’t think I’d put a whole bunch of $$$ on the Bucs in this one after what I’ve seen these last 2 games.

  27. Capt.Tim Says:

OJ Howard has alot of raw talent.
The dreaded potential. Several good plays this year.
And a bunch where it appears he ran the wrong route. If Brady wanted Brate,
Then it might be because he wasnt getting what he needed at TE.

    A few mights there.
    But,
Now the Bucs can trade Howard, and the primary concern will be his knee.
If he had played all year, he MIGHT have hurt his trade value.
But Ive said since he started playing. Great physical skills, low passion and knowledge of the playbook.
I think he will be traded, and wont play another down as a Buc.

  28. Mirrormirroronthewall Says:

Brady will have 2 pick-6. He will have to launch the ball downfield to keep up with the Packers. Stop making excuses, Jameis played star players available his hold career.

  29. #1bucfan Says:

    Get Brate the ball period.

mark my words we will always play better in the red jerseys and the all pewter garb…

all white is for girls…and tattoo and mr. rourke…

but the bucs don’t live on fantasy island

You can lay this loss around NE 12’s neck!! HENNY AND HOG…get yo-self some!!

  32. orlbucfan Says:

Cameron Brate is a very intelligent football player with sure hands. He’s always been that way ever since Licht signed him as an UFA (as I recall). Why Methuselah has singled him out is anyone’s guess. BL didn’t make that stupid 4th down call in the second half. BA did just like the asinine one in the 1st half.

  33. Devin Says:

Been reading these comments since joebucfan was started. This fan base has always been delusional. Team looks exactly the same as it did last year, QB play included. Maybe it’s time to admit the coach and GM are not up to par and we let a good promising QB go because of egos in the management team. I’m sure the resident scholars on this site would’ve have a “finger licking” good time if Jamie’s Winston last year “got confused” to what down it is at the end of the game but at least the QB is the white cough I mean right guy this time. *insert shrug shoulders emoji*

  34. SOEbuc Says:

Been begging for it as well. Ridiculous how he doesn’t get more reps.

  37. Natebucsfan Says:

Typical bucs coach. Wonder if brady has been begging to get rid of d.smith? Coaches need to listen to their players more often.

  38. James Walker Says:

Why was Tanner Hudson targeted 4 times so early in the game? Where was Brate?
