Arians: Penalties Holding Bucs Back

October 14th, 2020

Killing offense

So the Bucs had a weekend off after the Thursday night game to assess where the team stands.

Bucco Bruce Arians was asked to analyze his team yesterday following a free weekend and Arians made it clear the biggest issue is penalties.

“We did a bunch of self-scouting,” Arians said. “There’s a lot of good things. The biggest negative thing is there are games where we have too many self-inflicted penalties and put ourselves behind the chains.

“Does it happen every week? No. But when they happen, they happen in bunches and we have to correct that.”

Joe guesses one way to cut penalties is to focus on coaching technique coaches. Joe assumes some techniques Bucs coaches teach are prone to draw flags. That’s just a guess in that Joe doesn’t know if that really is the heart of the matter for the Bucs.

But dumb penalties are an issue, as well. For example, the Bucs are tied at No. 2 in the NFL in false starts, committing an average of two a game. That’s just not concentrating and focusing on the matter at hand.

Surely park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring, down-forgetting Bucs quarterback Tom Brady tells the huddle what count the snap is on. So this is fully a heads-up-your-ass stunt by players. There is no excuse for this.

The NFL has seen a big drop in offensive holding calls. But not in Tampa. The Bucs are tied for No. 2 in offensive holding calls with seven.  Could it be Bucs players are being coached blocking nuances that are magnets for flags?

Joe assumes offensive holding might be able to be coached out of players. But false starts? Those are just stupid penalties. And Joe doesn’t know how you can fix stupid midseason.

    coaches have to do better…

yank players out when they make stupid pre snap penalties….

last night bills coach started to yank players who continued to commit pre snap penalties…..outside of TOs that was the reason they lost the game vs the titans…

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  2. adam from ny Says:

steelers got there first holding penalty of the year in their most recent game played

  3. ClodHopper Says:

    Tons of penalties:

Good coaches: I’m going to work you guys like Micky worked Rocky training right handed. Keep hitting it! Hit it till it hurts, you bums!!

Arians: Hey do you guys know I have booze in my trunk? Also time really got away from me today. Seems like that always happens.

  4. The Coroner Says:

    Coaching.

  5. Bradinator Says:

It has to be coaching. Both the O and the D are guilty of bonehead penalties. They were seriously unprepared for the Thursday game. Had extra time this week, there should be no excuses. Accountability!

  6. Youngbucs Says:

Yea so I guess the two big 3rd down penalties in the gm are dumb Bucs right. More like dumb refs even with all the penalties the biggest of them weren’t real Bucs mistakes those belong to the refs!!!!

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

We have at least improved on our ST penalties…..

Our very aggressive defense can cause encroachment & offsides….

Olinemen hold when they are getting beat…..

  8. Alanbucsfan Says:

If it was coaching, how come Marpet has 0 penalties and Cappa has 1 penalty?
Wirfs is a rookie, Jensen has 3 penalties, but his don’t cost games.
The problem is you know who.
On D, the Bucs play an aggressive scheme(except for 4th quarter of Bears game). I think Davis will get better – he’s getting picks , just needs to clean up technique a little.

  9. Pewter Power Says:

Donovan Smith was garbage before this coaching staff got here. Technique doesn’t matter when you have lazy slow.

  10. Rayjay1122 Says:

Bench #76 and watch the OL penalties drop by at least 50%. Quick fix.

  11. Rob in Land O Lakes Says:

The penalties HAVE to get better for this team to be successful. That being said, on the issue of holding penalties, if we have been called for 7, I remember 2 or 3 of those that were horrendously bad calls. One was on Jensen where the DT fell down going by him. Clean it up, but officiating has been below average.

  12. D-Rome Says:

I don’t believe it’s coaching. Well, part if it may be but I believe Licht has constructed a roster of guys that are prone to committing penalties. It’s very difficult to overcome bad habits in the pros.

The “real” fans knew this long ago!!!!!!!!!!! But the sheep and local media denied the TRUTH!!!!!!!!!!! If only they paid attention!!!!!!!!!!!! Its is now time for the much beloved, and always requested “Realist Repost”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is wrong to think the Brady alone is why the Patriots are a well coached well disciplined team!!!!!!!!!! The bucs are a sloppy coach team, with the most penalized team in the NFL!!!!!!!!! This season will expose the bad gm, and average coaches from the Bucs!!!!!!!! If Brady can drag ole stale biscuit to a wildcard playoff game, it should be the greatest feat in Brady’s career!!!!!!!!!!! And that includes those 6 superbowls!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is the “no excuse” season of all “no excuse” seasons!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let us all hope that Gronk can coach!!!!!!!! Can he coach running backs??? Can he coach Tight ends????? Can he coach out the sloppy most penalized team from 2019 that clearly regressed from 2018!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now with Gronk supposedly here to coach, on by far the largest coaching staff in the league, making his 10 million salary by far the highest paid coaching staff!!!!!!!!!! Can Gronk fix golf carts?????? Did ole stale biscuit just needed a drinking buddy in Tampa????????

Let’s hope that some of this is true, because spending 10 million on this already mismanaged cap of the bucs, just to watch Gronk limp around on the field for a couple of games would not be money well spent!!!!!!!!!!!!

It’s time to need the sheep, and put them back in the pen!!!!!!!!!!!

    go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!

More like the much beloved and always requested that you STFU.

  15. SOEbuc Says:

Smith has 8 penalties. Five in the third or fourth quarter. Seven ten yards or less. Seven in Bucs territory. All holding and false starts. Arians is not petting him with smoothing words. Wirfs better be getting his LT reps and Haeg his RT reps in practice. Realize you f-cked up bad Licht. We will not “win now” with this guy.

  16. Casual Observer Says:

“We have to correct that.” Seems he says that after every game with excess penalties. Makes me wonder if he knows how to “correct that.”

  17. Boston Boy Says:

It happens EVERY week Bruce. The same stupid penalties over and over. Most of them are dead ball penalties. Yank the player out. Keep him out the rest of the game or even cut him. The team lacks discipline is the reason WHY you have 2 losses that should be wins. This is on YOU Arians. They will tolerate what you allow. The team models their head coach.

  18. Ftmyersbuc Says:

You keep blaming the coaches but its the players. Same shat every year. D. Smith has been getting coached and chewed out for 6 years and you think its the coach? Give me a break. He not gonna clean it up in year 6. If it aint changing after 3 years in the NFL, it aint changing. Reason there is 4 year contracts. Jensen needs to be policied by all other 10 players after players and hold him back. D. Smith needs to be benched for series everytime it happens. Guy on the bench just might be better. Hes a 3rd round tackle who plays like a 3rd rounder.

  19. John Sinclear Says:

You can’t coach out stupid ! Seven guys lined up within ten feet of the ball, and they cannot see it? And see when it is snapped?

  20. JimmyJack Says:

Twice we were driving the ball had momentum and had the Bears back on their heels and twice D.Smith ruined it with false starts………Smith is a total loser. Not a winner. Cant win with this guy. Im officially done with Donovan. I will join his haters now……..I dont care if he plays well for a few games its proven fact he will play like absolute crap again at least once more this year…….Probably a few times.

I hope he prooves me wrong but hes done this his whole career. He will probably be fine on Sunday. But Bucs fans will be doing nothing but waiting for the other shoe to drop for the rest of the year. My guess is Donavon will get his ass handed to him again in the Saints game like he always does. Totally unreliable player. Bucs made a mistake to retain this stiff. At least they had enough sense to draft us a legit tackle this year.

  21. Will Says:

Joe has no understanding why the fans want to run Smith out of town. Smh
I don’t get how someone who covers this team and watches the games can’t see how Smith is the problem of the Oline and needs to go. The guy has no fire or want to be great. We’re at game 6 and he’s had 2 horrible games already this season. You can’t win with a guy like that what makes it even worse is this is the guy that’s supposed to protect the blindside. After the look Brady gave him trust me Brady knows his blindside isn’t protected and the clock in his head will be ticking faster which will result in not allowing plays to fully develop.
I wish he would’ve opted out and Whirfs could’ve slid right into that spot.

  22. SOEbuc Says:

Don’t know how pissed I was when they gave him top tier OT money. I’ve always liked Licht. I think he’s a good scout and business man. Biggest, lazy f#ck up he’s made by far though.

  23. Anonymous Says:

Straight fire “Boston Boy” Vernon Hargreaves found out the hard way, who is next? Amazing how the defense suddenly began to play better when Vernon was jettisoned. The players will do what they are allowed to do. Hey Bruce, time to sharpen the Ax. GO BUCS!!!!

  24. August 1976 Buc Says:

Straight fire “Boston Boy” Players will do what they are allowed to do. it was Amazing the turn around lol of the Defense when Vernon Hargreaves was jettisoned. Bruce it is time to sharpen the AX. GO BUCS!!!!

  25. Sam Says:

Penalties are main reason Bucs are 3-2 not 1-4.

  26. Red Skeleton Says:

Stupid like Mike Evans running around pushing everyone he passes. Its like he was trying to get flagged on purpose.

  27. Bucsfanman Says:

    Coaches coach and players play!
Can the coach be on the LOS during play?! Is Donovan Smith doing anything different than his tenure under Koetter and Co.? NO!
    Jensen? NO.

Yes, the penalties stink but it’s not ALL on coaching.

  28. Will Says:

Bucsfanman and that’s the exact reason I’ve been saying for a while now that Smith needs to go. Jensen has actually got better with his dumb penalties but he still gets baited every so often into one. I’ve never understood why when his team mates see him standing about to do something dumb they don’t just go grab him and pull him back to the huddle. I’m sure they know what’s next heck I’m always yelling at the TV for someone to get him then boom there it is 15yd unsportsmanlike penalty. Took the bait again. Smh

    .
    .

Guys who opted out had their contract terms held over to next season. We would have just been stuck with him next year.

  30. Will Says:

Barack true however we wouldn’t be dealing with him this year and would have Whirfs in that spot to start his rookie season and maybe not be moving him there next year. Plus I’m not sure how good Haeg is but I’d hope he’s better than what we had a RT last year. Which would mean when we’d have to deal with Smith next year it’d be a matter of having him on the bench and possibly trading him or something. I don’t know that guy just has me all messed up. I just want him gone tired of hearing coaches make excuses for his lazy a@@.

  31. stpetebucsfan Says:

What “technique” is involved in remaining onside until the snap? Perhaps it’s called the “head out of the rectum” technique?

  32. Mirrormirroronthewall Says:

Lies and more lies. Penalties are Buccaneers culture. Funny how it is a problem now that Brady is the QB. Not when Jameis played!!! Go Packers!!!!

  33. Wesley Says:

    So are the officials.

  34. Barack's Crack Pipe Says:

    Will Says:
“Barack true however we wouldn’t be dealing with him this year…”

    You’ve got me there!

He’s made it clear he won’t play on the right side. I wonder if he’d be better off at guard. Expensive guard, but at least he’d be playing.

  35. unbelievable Says:

    Penalties?? No way coach !

Maybe next you can tell us the sky is blue.
