Deion Denies He Hired Warren Sapp

September 22nd, 2020

Coach Warren Sapp?

[UPDATE 3:22 p.m.] Though a published report from a TV station out of Jackson, Miss. stated former Bucs great Warren Sapp was hired by new Jackson State football coach Deion Sanders, “Prime Time” himself took to Twitter to claim the report is wrong.

[UPDATE 3:22 p.m.] Sapp himself twittered at the reporter, Joe Cook of WAPT-TV in Jackson, that he had “very bad sources” but didn’t exactly deny the report. Sanders was more direct, retweeting the report typing “ABSOLUTELY WRONG.”

[UPDATE 3:22 p.m.] It seems Cook deleted the Tweet where he listed Sanders’ alleged coaching staff, a pretty good sign his information was, in part, inaccurate. At least for today. 🙂

According to Sapp on his own Twitter this is not true.

That team might not win a game, but the coaching staff will be the best badass scout team on the planet!

  3. Rod Munch Says:

The Bucs should have hired Sapp just to ride Vita, then maybe he’d have the stamina to play more than half the snaps in a game.

  4. Will Says:

I’m hopeful that Deion can put together a great staff. Sapp is a HOFer and knows football. Yes he’s had issues off the field which in itself can be a great teaching tool. I can see plenty of kids wanting to be coached by those two can’t wait to see the rest of the staff.

  5. Rod Munch Says:

I don’t get the hire of Terrell Owens. He comes off as lazy and uninterested in football. Also going back and watching the 2002-03 playoff game versus the 49ers, when the TV broadcast talked about weak the Bucs secondary was and how TO was going to manhandle Ronde, it really made me laugh – and apparently made Ronde mad because Ronde destroyed TO in that game and took the ball away from him for what should have been a TD, except for stupid Rice decided to hit a o-lineman in the head on the other side of the field during the return.

  6. JimmyJack Says:

Where is Jackson State U? I’ve never heard of that school.

That coach staff making me laugh. I hope they succeed. That would be fun.

Michael Irvin should be involved too.

Where is Jackson State U? I’ve never heard of that school.

    Uh, oh. 🙁

  8. rrsrq Says:

JSU is in Jackson MS, an HBCU that has produced some pretty good players, most famous is Walter Payton though, Jackie Slater, Jimmy Smith and Lem Barney

  9. Cainishere Says:

Retired Bucs vets make awesome technique and motivational mentors for young players. Our royalty should come down to help this team get even closer to perfection. You think the Bucs D would like to see Brooks and Sapp and Barber and Rice walking around talking to them? Loads of awesome pics!!! We need the fellas to come out of the woodwork and help this team get it right. That o-line needs educated up by all the defensive vets we can get.
    GO BUCS!!!

  10. Bucslife Says:

If you read the article numb nuts you will see it says Jackson Mississippi

  11. Joe in Michigan Says:

Yes, the Bucs should hire Sapp to scream at Vea because he’s “too fat”. Um, have you seen any skinny Nose Tackles in the NFL? Vea is a role player on a (so far) good Bucs defense. He might not show up on the stat sheet, but him being a BIG dude opens up things for other players.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

This was the epitome of FAKE NEWS!!!

  13. donuts Says:

Is there a locker room BIG enough for the Prime Time and 99 egos to fit in? I doubt it.

  14. Rod Munch Says:

Joe in Michigan – Do you draft a 2-down run stuffing NT in the middle of the 1st round? Maybe. I’m not totally ruling it out, if Vita is the best run stuffer in the NFL then I guess you could make a claim — but the issue is, of course, Vita was sold as being a 3-down guy who would develop a pass rush. But since he can’t even stay on the field, it’s hard to be in there on 3rd and long when he’d have a chance to get those sacks.

Sapp’s contention was at 350lbs he wouldn’t be able to handle the Florida heat and wouldn’t be a three down player, and again, if he’s not a 3-down player, you’re not drafting him in the 1st round. The other issue is if he slims down, then he’s not special anymore. From listening to Sapp talk about Vita, that was always the issue he talked about from day 1, and certainly Sapp seems to have been proven correct. It doesn’t mean Vita is a bad player, he’s not, he’s just not what was advertised – he’s a run stuffing 3-4 NT, which is what many of us said he was, and if that’s all he is, was that a good pick with the 12th overall pick?

  15. Rod Munch Says:

It’s always funny to me the ‘words hurt’ crowd who are offended by men talking trash. It’s just such a simpleton mindset that I don’t get. I suppose they got picked on and made fun of in school or something and can’t let it go, but how anyone can listen to Sapp and get mad is beyond me. The guy is incredibly entertaining and, at least with football, very insightful. Personally I like people who say what they really think, but I guess the political correct cupcakes can’t handle that, they’d rather have men slapping each other on the rear and saying good game and high fiving in the shower.

  16. adam from ny Says:

vita seems very very winded and out of shape, and a bit heavy…

hopefully by week 5 he’ll be good to go…

these first 4 weeks are like training camp for the big man

  17. Cainishere Says:

Extra strength and conditioning does a world of good for anybody. I have mentioned it in several posts now. Brady bulk up his arms and back more.
Gronk and D. Smith too. They may hate it at first but then they will feel a lot better once they get to where they really need to be.

  18. Joe in Michigan Says:

Rod Munch: All valid points. I’m not worried about where Vea was taken in the draft, there’s nothing we can do about that now. My point is he fills a role. If there’s a better interior pass rusher on the Bucs to come in for Vea on obvious passing downs, I’m okay with that. As long as the defense is playing well, which they are so far, thank God.

  19. JimmyJack Says:

It is a good year to look back at the Vea draft. 3rd year players now.

Vea does lack the star power you want from a 1st round pick. But overall we getting a decent amount of value from the rest of that draft class……a couple of these players are poised to have a great finish to 2020………..

    -V.Vea
    -RoJo
    -MJ Stewart
    -Carlton
    -Cappa
    -Whitehead

  20. Rod Munch Says:

JimmyJack – the problem with Vita is obviously Derwin James, who would have fit a hole perfectly in the defense and was an amazing rookie. As for injuries, they’ve been fluke injuries so you don’t know if they would have occurred here or not. But going by memory, these were the people on the table…

The fans and national pundits choice was overwhelming Derwin James – and even with the injuries, if you knew you’re getting an all-pro player, I’m taking the all-pro player since the injuries have been flukey.

The other pick, popular with the Joe’s if I remember correctly, was Marcus Davenport, who has been so-so. Certainly Vita is the better pick here.

The final pick I remember being talked about was Da’Ron Payne. Now I haven’t paid a ton of attention to Payne, but I thought he had a really good rookie year, but maybe not — or something else happened because he started only 9 of 15 games last year. I don’t know if it was injuries or something else since I don’t pay attention to the REDSKINS, but again Vita seems to be the better pick.

Overall I’d take James, but can certainly listen to people say Vita was the proper pick because of injuries.

  21. FortMyersDave Says:

@Rod Munch. Yeah hiring TO is a head scratcher for sure. Last time I even gave him any thought was when he did that Hardee’s- Carl’s Jr. Philly cheesesteak commercial with all the proto-typical Philly fans piling on him and he ends up at a Malibu mansion with a model.

  22. Joe in Michigan Says:

JimmyJack: Some decent players on there. The problem is, the “Spilled Milkers” as I call them (people who cry about draft picks, when EVERY team has failed picks) wanted/want Derwin James, who I think is out for the year.

  23. JimmyJack Says:

Rod Munch and if we take Derwin James and his career goes the same way we get nothing out of him. And remember he would have played as a rookie under Mike Smith so it would not of been a Pro Bowl season.

And they are two completely positions. Its not like we passed a All Pro DT for Vea. We were building trenches and took the best on the board. Im sure they thought he would develope more as a passrush. So he hasnt been a great top 15 pick but he has been solid.

But I posted all the names because overall the draft was very good not great but potentisl to get there.

And remember with that first pick we traded down. If they thought either Vea or James was a future All Pro they dont make the trade. They may of misevaluated James but it worked out since he cant stay healthy……and maybe they had injury concerns….lots of times that comes down to work ethic. Maybe thats what they didnt like. Overall picking Vea is a B or C depending on your opinion. The James pick is a C- at best right now………Id say overall they made the right choice to trade down.

  24. Joe in Michigan Says:

Vea is decent (IMHO anyway, I’d like to see more, though) and the Bucs have Antoine Winfield Jr now. If Whitehead can play like he did on Sunday, our defense could be special.

  25. WhoCares Says:

Sapp and Sanders would be great tv. Just like CNN, nobody would believe or care about what they say but they would tune in just for the laughs!+

  26. Bucs>Everyone Says:

A terror on the field and a general on the sideline. Sapp was a wrecking ball, incredibly football smart. What a competitor. I miss watching him play!!

  27. Tampa Bay Ray Says:

The Tampa Bay weather takes time to get used to, the season is totally different, Arians said it was not fair to any of the players, their practice time has been cut way down, Tampa heat is different than most everywhere, be patient , they will get their eventually.

  28. BucsMinisiterFuller Says:

ever see the videos of Sapp breaking down game film.
    Super smart and super entertaining.
