Room For Shady

September 3rd, 2020

Don’t worry Shady. I will still throw you the ball.”

So, with gift wrapping still laying on the floor after finding out last night Leonard Fournette is with the Bucs (Joe’s not used to Wednesday night drinking — a tad slow this morning), it is reasonable to expect someone will get fewer touches.

Will that be someone who is now inactive on gamedays, struggling to remove his Bucs baseball cap during games?

Well, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network has intel that Shady McCoy, also a free agent pickup this summer (two signings at running back in five weeks, imagine that?), will still be a weapon for park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring Bucs quarterback Tom Brady.

(Additionally, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network noted it has been “communicated” to him that Shady is still very much in the Bucs’ plans this fall.)

Shady is dangerous as a pass-catching running back.

Now the gang over at Rotoworld thinks Fournette will be used more in red zone offense than between the 20s, and they speculate Ronald Jones will be used somewhat between the 20s as he is more of a broken field runner.

Don’t get Joe started on Dare Ogunbowale this morning.

IF you take coach at his word,

it would be Dare over Shady

you think shady is going to play special teams?

Coach said along the lines of if you arent starting, you better play special teams, the 4th best CB may be cut if he cant play special teams.

Does that not apply to RB as well?

  2. Joeypoppems Says:

So in my mind its now clear they either carry 5 or Vaughn is out.

I mean, this is kinda related but also kinda not, but the way this team scouts RBs is still awful even if Vaughn makes the team

  3. Sarasota Garey Says:

You dont cut your 3rd best back to keep Dare your 5th best back. Other people can play special teams like a receiver or db.

  4. Ron says Says:

Shady has proven hands and the experience moving the ball and blocking he will still be a big part of the team.

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Sounds like Joe is already started on Dare…..

  6. Yehaw Says:

Fournette, Shady, Dare, Rojo. Rookies on the practice squad.

  7. danr Says:

    @sarasotaGary

I was just referencing what coach said like a week ago. He said if you arent starting, then whether you make the team is based on special teams, not whether your the 3rd best at your position.

  8. Sarasota Garey Says:

@danr Yeah, idk maybe Vaughn goes to the practice squad, I dont know if he can play special teams. I think he would get scooped up by another team.

  9. Pablo Says:

Pablo thinks if we do not win a Super Bowl, it is a wasteD season

I seriously doubt that Keshawn Vaughn will be put on the practice squad…..more likely, he will come up with a last minute injury and placed on IR.

  11. DBS Says:

yes Joe cries about Dare as bad as Todd Wright cries about Jon Cooper. They are a good match . Could do the crying joe and todd show.

  12. Nutbucer Says:

3rd round RB’s don’t clear waivers. They aren’t waiving Vaughn, he won’t be on the practice squad.

  13. Joe Says:

    yes Joe cries about Dare

Joe isn’t in the habit of embracing and celebrating XFL-level players, sorry. Certainly not if the goal is to win NFL games.

  14. gotbbucs Says:

Shady was always a long shot to make the roster. He was brought in to get a good look at for possibly later in the season if there were injuries at the position.
You have to be pretty ignorant to reality if you thought he was going to come in and light things up at his age. Rojo, 2nd round pick thats been in the system for two years/Starter. Fournette, will need two or three weeks to get up to speed, will split carries with Rojo when he gets up to speed. Dare, cheap young 3rd down back, spent alot of time at the Brady workouts this summer, familiar now with what Brady wants. Vaughn, 3rd round pick.

Shady’s best days were already behind him two years ago.

  15. Cobraboy Says:

I do not think the signing of Fournette is a reflection of any of the other RB’s, and certainly not a condemnation.

He’s a guy you get at a low price no matter what you already have.

With both Fournette and McCoy on one-year deals, I doubt the other three RB’s are in jeopardy of being cut. Keep in mind—I think this is correct—players can be put on the practice squad as “protected”, and while the minimum is $12k a week, I don’t think there is a maximum, so a guy like Vaughn can be kept for development and still get paid.

He sounded like a slow-starter anyway, a rook coming in off of “the sickness.”

So I suspect they keep 5 RB’s on the total roster.

My main concern is Special Teams. You can’t have a bunch of starting talent covering and blocking for kicks.

  16. iamrhenry Says:

Myself, I keep shady. With him and Fournette in the backfield together on short yardage downs, opposing defenses won’t know if it is a run or pass. The Bucs have seldom had this wrinkle. As far as Vaughn, if I’m not mistaken, he could be placed on the practice squad this year and still be protected because of the new covid safety valves in place this year.

  17. ocala Says:

If the Bucs cut Vaughn or Johnson they will be claimed immediately. They are going to have to manipulate the roster and expanded practice squad to maximize depth.

  18. ocala Says:

    @Cobraboy:

You can protect them after Tuesday of each week, but the Bucs will have to cut them and make them available for any other NFL team to claim them before placing them on the practice squad.

Even if they do that and protect them each Tuesday another team can sign them on Monday to their active roster.

  19. Cainishere Says:

It is what I said back in May, The more winning successful elements you have surrounding a talented young team the more powerful and successful it will become. PERFECT SEASON GO BUCS!!!

  20. Ricky Says:

    Who is Dare anyway?

  21. Joe Says:

    Who is Dare anyway?

It seems something with a bigger fanclub than one would expect.

People act like the guy is Warrick Dunn or something.

  22. Joe in Michigan Says:

Dare might be good on special teams, but he was one of the worst kick returners I’ve seen on the Bucs. Ever.
Vaughn will make the team, IMHO.

  23. danr Says:

    @Ricky
the guy who finished 2 games with negative rushing yards last season.

  24. danr Says:

    @ricky

He had another game with 8 carries for 9 yards.

    Ya know a star.

  25. danr Says:

    if you believe coach…

Shady is out. he is NOT going to play special teams.

  26. Duthsty Rhothdes Says:

Imagine this scene: Ray Jay packed stadium in January beautiful 54 degree evening for the divisional playoff game at 8 pm on Fox, shady taking a screen pass 80 yds for gold, gronk a wheel route td, evans a 40 yard bomb from brady for 6 and you cannot spell fournette without four as he bashes the cowboys into submission in the last quarter as the bucs move on to san fran for the NFC championship

  27. Cobraboy Says:

    @ocala: thanks for the clarification.

  28. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Dare Ogunbowale will most likely not survive it when we start to cut down.

  29. adam from ny Says:

who the hell is johnson? ^^^^^^^^

  30. ocala Says:

    @Cobraboy.

You’re welcome. If the Bucs can put Tyler Johnson on IR that would probably be the most prudent move.

  31. bojim Says:

    Vaughn on IR.

  32. Bucsfanman Says:

I just can’t believe it! It’s a Fanman dream. A big back? Here?
    Somebody pinch me please!

Fournette is the best back. Rojo will have to unseat Shady by showing he has hands. 3rd rounder Vaughn and Dare make up the rear. If Vaughn is smart, he’ll make ST a priority. I’ve NEVER been a Dare fan, other than him being a Buc!

My depth chart would look like this:
    Fournette
    Shady
    Rojo
    Vaughn

Shady and Rojo will split time spelling Fournette. Rojo and Vaughm would be wise to hone their craft with Shady still in the room because if Fournette goes off, one of those guys will be vying for Shady’s role.

  33. adam from ny Says:

    dare is like avis…

    he tries harder…

    and the coaches like that

  34. stpetebucsfan Says:

I get the speculation about Vaughn and agree with TBBF that he could get an “injury” and go on IR. But if Covid let’s them place him on the practice squad for insurance that’s how we go. He may see action before the year is up. If any of the other backs get the crud there’s two weeks out of the lineup.

  35. adam from ny Says:

fournette is not really a big back…

he’s like almost a big back

  36. adam from ny Says:

    dare……aka……oggie

  37. Brandon Says:

I think trying to sneak Dare onto the practice squad would be an easy thing to do. Vaughn would have to go on IR. With Jones we have an all around back, Fournette we have the bruiser, and McCoy we have the pass catching weapon… that’s the same formula for success Brady had in NE all of those years.

  38. ©MadMax Says:

3 headed monster…keep it simple and dont get it confused. Theyre chasing rings and the young guys know it and will learn from this….we NOW have ground and pound!!!!

friggin sports betting dropped from 1300 to 1000 after us signing LF…all good though, i added to my bet…turning a ben into a grand aint nothing to shake a stick at 🙂

  39. Bucsfanman Says:

adam- He RUNS like a big back too.
He’s 228 lbs so we’d be splitting hairs over definitions. He’s OURS! That’s what counts.

  40. orlbucfan Says:

Hey Joes: Dare ain’t AFL nor XFL, he is light years better. Hope Bucs shock the planet and win on opening day.

  41. mark2001 Says:

Remember all of us that wanted Dalvin Cook over Vita? Well… looks like we finally got a top notch RB from the 2017 draft after all…just took a few years.

  42. Joe in Michigan Says:

It was OJ Howard over Dalvin, Vea over Derwin James. Not trying to be a jerk.

  43. August 1976 Buc Says:

Shady is here becuase he is an excellent receiver out of the back field. This is not Shady from 2015 with alot of gas in the tank. Also If you check out his blocking, it has not been good. Shady is here because Tom OK’ed the move. Shady is a smart player that can catch the football out of the back field and do damage. Everyone knows Brady loves dumping the ball off to the backs. BUT it is a little sketchy wheter he makes the season opening roster. Because Shady has been a liability as a blocker. We will see if the Bucs will trust him to block for Brady on 3rd downs. This team is not going to the Super Bowl with Gabbert as a starter. So that being said, it is a toss up who will stay, between his abilty to catch the ball out of the back field or one of the rookies with potential. Either way it is all gravy now that Fournette joined the fold, because Fournette is a 3 down back. GO BUCS!!!!

  44. mark2001 Says:

No problem J Michigan. Just saying…all the second guessing on Lichts drafts….and we end up getting a quality RB, Vita, and if Winfield turns out to be what he appears to be, Howard and Winfield, a young and talented Safety. And don’t look now, but James has been often injured and Cook is in the middle of a contract dispute. Sure, Licht has had his share of misses. But give him credit where credit is due.

  45. Joe in Michigan Says:

    Right, mark2001.
