Mike Evans 2019 vs. 2020

September 25th, 2020

Comparing seasons.

How has the Bucs offense changed after adding park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring quarterback Tom Brady following Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston?

A look at receiver routes might be a clue.

Using route tracks recorded by NextGen stats, derived from sensors on players’ equipment, the four-letter decided to focus on Bucs star receiver Mike Evans. In the graphic below, it appears Evans is mostly using one side of the field this year as opposed to last year.

Evans used the whole field and had more touchdowns on deeper routes in 2019. Now, Evans seems to be using just the left side and shorter routes.

Why is that? Joe isn’t sure. Is this because Brady prefers Evans on the left? Could Jameis be better seeing the entire field (that doesn’t seem likely)? Could it be Jameis was more mobile than Brady and hit Evans on routes after escaping the pocket?

Or could Evans’ shorter routes be related to his gimpy hamstring and subsequent lack of stamina, as Bucco Bruce Arians spoke of this week?

Those are questions only Arians, offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich and Evans himself could answer.

The graphic does seem to suggest the Bucs’ offense has changed. Or at least, the pass routes have.

  2. Mickman Says:

OMG, really? It’s two games into the season and the first game he had 4 targets. Stop it!

  3. Leighroy Says:

It’s unclear for the twitterverse too…is the photo on the right broken? Or is the point here that ME13 has run zero deep outs and digs in 2020?

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Something isn’t right here? I’m not distinguishing the comparison.

Jay-miss throws to Me13 in 2019 on the left, And jay-miss throws to Me13 in 2020 on the right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Go Broncos!!!!!!!!!!!!! errrrrr, I mean, go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. Swampbuc Says:

Or could it be that two games in, there isn’t enough of a sample size to compare to a whole season and it’s ridiculous to try to conclude anything at this point. Evans not 100%, no Godwin last week, brand new deal between QB and receivers…….

    Nursing hamstring?

  9. Georger Says:

Wait 6 weeks before you start reaching. No trend yet

  10. BigHog Says:

Of course “EVERYTHING” is different Mr. 5,000 could get it down field …all game long and that is not NE12’s game, the comparisons are easily seen, I know Jamis turns it over too much and Brady not so much but will that get us to THE SUPER BOWL?

  11. Cobraboy Says:

    Why is anyone surprised?

Brady is the GOAT because of shorter routes and a quick release.

  12. Realist Says:

Have a cup of coffee and try again. You’ll do better next time.

  13. BucNBeers Says:

Looks like the difference between how much longer JW held onto the ball as apposed to TB12.

  14. Youngbucs Says:

Yo this world is so stupid after 2 gms????? I wish people would use their own mind more. I mean gm plans change week 2 week if this is the data after 8 gms so be it.

  15. Baz Says:

I don’t see anything saying Evans is playing only on one side of the field either. The left is 2019, the right is 2020. Am I missing something?

    GO BUCS!!!!

  18. David Says:

It is 2 games… with a gimpy hammy… and missing Godwin 1 game.
Plus they are all easing into a slightly different offense with Brady

M1K3 has been a favorite of mine since Johnny Football was dancing around slinging the ball to him.. Love this guy.

Not sure how accurate this is but I never read Evans getting offseason work with Brady to get a feel. I know it’s a totally different animal than in game but still makes me wonder if that combined with conditioning and now hammy has made a big impact.

Either way I’m not worried. I’m sure Gozilla will still terrorize. Just glad our defense and run game can carry us through the “baby steps” of the getting the offense down.

What a terrible take after week 2.

Before I read the title it’s YAC. 50 yarder was cherry. JW3 couldn’t do in a hundred billion years.

Great Sample Size and Excellent Fluff piece to waste almost 6 minutes on.

He wrote this just so he could say “duuuhhh does Winston maybe see the field better duuuuhh??” Dude, it’s two types of route concepts!! Just because they’re not doing digs doesn’t mean ANYTHING!!! If anything it means we have a QB that refused to throw those high risk routes!! How many deep out routes did your boyfriend throw interceptions on??? Maybe 15 of his THIRTY picks last year?? Yeah maybe a good QB came in and said coach, this is a really dumb play that needs to be taken out of the playbook since it’s the most intercepted pass in the league!!!! ….. Winston sucked!!! You have been wrong about players over and over!!! Just admit when you’re wrong!!!
