Godwin, SMB Status Uncertain

September 28th, 2020

Awaiting MRI results.

Bucco Bruce Arians had an update on injured receiver Chris Godwin and cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting.

Sort of.

Arians said both players are scheduled to have MRI’s on their injuries today. Godwin left the game with a hamstring injury and SMB left the game with a groin/hamstring.

Until the team receives the MRI results, Arians’ wouldn’t speculate on their availability for Sunday’s game with the Chargers.

If SMB were to miss playing time, Arians said he is comfortable with having Jamel Dean start at corner with Antoine Winfield playing slot corner and Mike Edwards at safety.

That, Arians also added, does leave the Bucs a little thin in the secondary.

Even if the MRI’s are negative I don’t see them playing. I think we’ll miss SMB.

Get ready for some possible playing time Parnell Motley

I think that we will miss SMB more.
Godwin the better player right now but depth is so important in the secondary.

That is why everyone complaining about too many secondary draft picks just has to look at what New England has done the last 6 to 7 years.

You have to invest a lot of capital there to have a good defense.
Across the league secondary guys get injured and you have to have that depth.

Draft another secondary guy next year. Do not listen to the fans that think that for some reason you can have two starting corners and you will be done.

A bit thin but shout out to Mike Edwards for being on the bench for 2.6 games coming into the broncos game and making the game sealing interception. Granted at that point we were going to win but still.

  5. 813bucboi Says:

we’ll miss both equally IF they have to miss a game…

    next man up….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  6. Coburn Says:

This mean they don’t trust Ryan Smith or just that Edwards at S and Winfield at slot > Winfield at S and Smith at slot. Maybe see him as more of an outside guy and Dean still better against the #2 receiver.

  7. unbelievable Says:

I think they will both miss this week. Hammies are b!tch.

And let’s hope we don’t have to see Ryan Smith playing anything except special teams. Edwards and Dean are far better at their respective positions.

    Isn’t Ryan Smith available?

We have a problem at CB if we are thin after losing one player……

I do think that Ryan Smith has experience and shows up on occasion…..he tackles well…..

TylerJohnson was in the game Sunday and dropped a pass which was negated by a penalty….he should get some reps..

Any word on Justin Watson’s progress?

  11. SlyPirate541 Says:

We can beat the Chargers in Tampa without these guys. Rest them because we’ll need them against Chicago and Green Bay.

  12. cmurda Says:

It wasn’t just the game sealing pick by Edwards. It was the fact that he came in and made the most of his opportunities. He made a few nice plays. He definitely instilled some confidence in the coaches with his performance.

  13. orlbucfan Says:

Chris Godwin deserves to be rested and healed up. He is such a gamer that he would probably play with a broken leg. The young secondary will be fine if SMB has to miss a game or two. Besides, the DL and the LBs are all healthy and hungry. Godwin is the one who has to heal.

Ryan Smith is not here to player Corner. He is here to play soecial teams…….Expect them to go with the formula they had yesterday. Winfield at CB Edwards at S.

If they need a Corner off the bench it will likely be Motley. You can probably expect Mazzie Wilkins to get the call up from the practice team and play corner over Ryan Smith if needed.

Smith is way far down on the depth chart. From all looks last year he was not very good at all playing the press coverages Bowles uses.

  15. Buccernutter Says:

Honestly, I think Dean is our best corner anyway.

  16. Rod Munch Says:

WR depth on this team is terrible. Watson shouldn’t be in the NFL, no one even knows how the 5th WR is (I heard it’s Tyler Johnson, but it’s just a rumor), Scotty Miller has been better than I expected, but also can’t get first downs as it’s always tackled a yard short of any 1st down marker on 3rd down. I still hate the fact the team supposedly went “all-in” but didn’t bother to get a 3rd NFL level WR. Licht needs to move on this before we get much further into the season. Send someone a 3rd rounder for a guy on a rookie contract who can step in and be that #3, which in turn makes Scotty Miller a lot more valuable since he’d slide down the depth chart like Hump did, where he can be a real matchup issue against deep chart corners and safeties.

  17. Issac haggins Says:

Rob Munch , I concur but I think your problem is worse at corner and Licht easily could have brought in a high quality corner with experience …….. I fully agree with the receiver deal but it can be easily accounted for with the T Ends , if Lefty can figure that out !!
Hey Licht got less cute than normal so I am happy about that !!

  18. Rod Munch Says:

Issac – TEs could be the answer, and maybe yesterday was Arians turning a new leaf and deciding that TEs are allowed to catch the ball in his offense, however we’ve seen that now once in 19 games, so I’m not ready to say he’s changed.

That’s why having a WR is so much more important.

I’d think someone would give us something for Brate, in particular if it was a #3 or #4 WR for a TE that would likely start for a lot of teams. Jacksonville might be the place to look, Dede Westbrook for Brate seems like a straight up trade kind of deal. He’s someone that has caught 66 passes both of the last two years and seems to have just fallen out of favor there, he’d seem like a fit as a #3 or #4 and at least has experience. Additionally, if it was a straight up trade, that would free up another $3m or so in salary for the Bucs.

  19. Issac haggins Says:

Hell, that would be worth throwing in a 6 th just for the cap relief and creating future D end / CB options as the year wears on .

  20. coverdeuce Says:

I think it leaves them thin in the slot but outside Ryan and Jamel are capable of holding things down.

  21. REDZONE BA Fan Says:

Godwin is too valuable down the stretch to push him to be on field for this easy win vs Chargers. Brady hit – what – 10+ targets vs Broncos? And Gronk is now up to speed? Godwin is always missed being on the field. But we will be fine this Sunday vs Chargers w Godwin cheering us on. D will take care of a Rookie QB. Chalk up the W.
