Why Brady Came To Bucs

August 15th, 2020

“Thanks for listening, Bruce.”

The answer to the statement about why park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring Tom Brady came to the Bucs can be found in a simple, short line in the TV series “Mad Men” from the character Don Draper.

“That’s what the money is for!”

Well, it seems Bill Belicheat may not have believed it.

Joe Montana (the original GOAT unless you want to yell at Joe about Roger Staubach) said recently that Brady told him the Belicheats wouldn’t listen to his input and it frustrated him.

Former punter, Pat McAfee, took to his national radio show to say, in so many words, he doesn’t blame Brady and shame on the Patriots for treating Brady like just another cog in the machine.

“That’s all Tom wanted,” McAfee said. “He wanted to be empowered. Tom wanted to be, at this point in his life, maybe his opinion matters. This isn’t college football anymore. This is Tom Brady.

“You can see why Tom would be p!ssed. ‘I’m a grown-arse man. I would really like for somebody to appreciate my brain in this building.'”

The Bucs, McAfee believes, will actually lean on Brady’s experience and insight to carve out both the offense and gameplans.

(First, the word “empowered” brings to mind a spat that cutie political honk Margaret Hoover — descendant of the 31st president of the United States, Herbert Hoover, (but to Joe’s knowledge not related to tyrant and former FBI overlord J. Edgar Hoover. Margaret Hoover for years was on creepy, handsy Bill O’Reilly’s show. Hoover, an excitable woman, was flipping out about some women’s rights issue when O’Reilly got fed up and interrupted her, “Alright, alright Hoover, I get it — empowerment!”)

Keep in mind all of this Brady talk is conjecture. It is at best coming from a third party. Now Joe is not saying Montana is making all of this up, but we haven’t heard anything about this from Brady, or from strip-mall-oriental-rub-joint-visiting-Bob Kraft or from Belicheat.

And the notion that Belicheat would not tolerate input from Brady seems far-fetched. Belicheat — Joe is getting this from people who were on the inside of the Patriots’ organization — is nothing if not a sponge for football information.

He cannot seem to get enough football info and, in fact, is the curator of perhaps the largest library of football books and publications in the world, which he donated to the U.S. Naval Academy.

Belicheat is known to bring in college coaches and high school coaches to pick their brains and maybe learn a new tactic or technique. Belicheat has even been to Dartmouth football practices, a program famous for winning without any hitting in any practice.

So having a guy like Brady who everyone says is so smart and not accepting any insight from him seems a stretch to Joe.

Besides, in the NFL Network documentary of Belicheat that debuted a few years ago, there is a scene where Brady goes into Belicheat’s office and recommends a play or a formation of some sort to Belicheat, where Belicheat responds, “Good idea,” and he scribbles down notes.

Joe can fully understand if that simpleton and con artist Josh McDaniels wouldn’t listen to Brady, that adds up. But Brady continually getting a cold shoulder from Belicheat? That does not add up.

To believe Brady is in Tampa, in part, because he can influence the offense, well, Joe is all for that. Listening to one of the best who ever played the game is just smart business.

Look at Joe trying to bring Ndog back for us all.

  2. Tampabuscsbro Says:

Honestly I am starting to believe that brady may have the patience of a saint. How else can you describe a guy who had Josh McDaniels as his OC and QB coach for over a cumulative decade.

Also thanks Joe writing this article right as Ndog was leaving to keep him here. We all need entertainment.

    LOL

  4. Howard Cosell Says:

Joe, with the left-hook to McDaniels!

If the Bucs win and the Patriots have a mediocre season McDainiels is in trouble

It’s just smart buisness to seek and go with Brady’s input. Play to his strenght’s…why wouldn’t you.

  8. Dreambig Says:

I love that Brady is here and the potential he brings. Having said that, I know access is limited but is there some other coverage we can get? More interviews with other players? Stories on position battles brewing? Not being overly critical as Covid sucks and not much real is happening but more coverage of a broader nature would be interesting. Cant read too much more about Brady. Its all been said.

  9. BigHog Says:

THE You People Movement is gushing today!!

  10. Hodad Says:

Doesn’t matter to me why he’s here, long as he is here. My guess it’s like being with a good woman for 20 years. Even with a good woman 20 years sounds like a prison sentence. Know what I mean Joe? Then there’s that hot chick in Tampa, with all the assets. Brady has a couple of good years left. He’s here with the hot chick.

  11. Jeagan1999 Says:

Brady is the QB we should have had years ago. The QB we never had.

No offense to Doug Williams, Brad Johnson, Jeff Garcia, etc….but Brady is the kind of QB that comes along once or twice in a lifetime! HE makes this team better just with his leadership, knowledge and experience. If he can hold up physically thru the season, there’s no reason why (with the weapons the team has assembled) we can’t be a playoff team in 2020!

Can’t wait for the games to start!

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

It’s one thing to seek and gather input….it’s entirely another to implement it….I suspect that Brady constantly gave good advice that wasn’t taken.

  13. Paul Says:

    park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring Tom Brady

Bush League attempt a humor again. You use that to describe the GOAT that we are lucky to have here-but you called the piece of Interceptions Record Machine JW-America’s Quarterback?? Why so Disrespectful? Are you just bad at humor or really do not Brady because of your broken heart over JW getting kicked to the curb?

  14. SufferingSince76 Says:

Paul, are you new to Joe’s site? If you don’t like the nicknames, this site is not for you. Joe is independent and unswayed by such criticism. Besides, it’s funny. Laugh a little.

  15. Jim Says:

You can be a “sponge for football information” and still ignore someone’s advice. And the Patriot’s approach to the game is not known for feel-good acceptance and flexibility. None of us know, but I’m on the side that believes Brady felt dis-respected.

  16. Beeej Says:

Well, I’m sure Brady asked for some quality wide receivers, and he sure didn’t get THAT

  17. Mike Says:

Why did he come to Tampa? Because JW just couldn’t stop throwing the other team Touchdowns?

  18. Buczilla Says:

Good article and I agree that it’s a stretch that Bill wouldn’t take Brady’s input seriously. I’m thinking that they both kinda decided that it was time to part ways, but we’ll probably never know for sure.

  19. Cobraboy Says:

I suspect it has more to do how Belichick and thre Pat’s organization treated Brady’s fitness guru, business partner and best friend: Alex Guerrero.

They banned the guy from the Pat’s facilities, and banned players from seeking treatment from Guerrero at the off-site facility.

That began the downward spiral of the relationship. Brady had *zero* intention of going back to NE.

He’d have gone back to CA, his home base, but CA has gone all woke and high taxes, and his wife doesn’t like it there as a place to raise kids.

Between weather, taxes, low regulation, a great coaching staff, killer offensive weapons, and a long relationship with the GM, Tampa is a perfect fit for his present and future.

I suspect this was a long time coming and everybody knew it.

Suffering, it was funny the first time. All the way to perhaps the 5th. Then it just becomes tired and stubbornly reductive. Also silly. I’m here for the content and I always pass over that silliness with a knowing eye roll.

  22. Josh Says:

Y’all still ain’t ever winning a Superbowl with Brady. We got him during all of his primes. Now that he’s just mediocre y’all can have him I’ll take Cam Newton any day at this point in Brady’s career. And Joe your just jealous the Coach BB won more Superbowls than your favorite franchise has ever and will ever see during their whole existence. Keep on hating and we’ll keep on winning lmfao

  23. hammerhead Says:

Brady can’t be all that smart judging by some of his orange faced friends.

  24. Anonymous Says:

Brady came to Tampa because he is commonly referred as the GOAT, but stat wise Brees leads him in most and Tampa had the only weapons where he felt he could not only catch but pass brees. It’s that simple he wanted to leave no doubt that he is the greatest of all time.

  25. Oneilbucs Says:

Brady came to Tampa because no other team wanted him but the bucs . They were willing to over pay him end of story .

  26. Sport Says:

Our resident trolls are so obsessed with their idea of what the Bucs should have done,

Its a shame, because this is so much damn fun having Brady and Gronk join our already talented Team and Coaching Staff!

@Anonymous: tell me again about Brees success in the post season. I’ll wait right here.

No QB in NFL history has won championships like Brady, and that is what football is all about.

Some check the sheets. Others check championships.

Wrong. So wrong… $25 million is well below what several other starting QBs are making. It’s practically the going rate for a decent starting QB in free agency.

Explain to me how that’s overpaying him?

    End of story 😂😂😂😂😂

  30. Sport Says:

Dare I say Licht is doing a world class job since he recruited BA to come on board.

    Hhhmmmm…

A coach who knows how to coach, hire talent, build a team, combined with GM willing to 100% support his HC.

Serious fun for all Bucs Fans!

  34. ExPatsfan Says:

Hey Bucs Fans! Put your seatbelt on and get ready for real QB to lead your team! You got a steal with Brady and I hope you win it all. Let me tell you what this was all about, BB. Who is the most arrogant SOB that ever lived but gets away with it because he wins! People up here are so tired of him and we’re hoping he falls flat on his face!! He let the GOAT walk because he’s too proud to admit he needs him to win. He grabbed Newton so his quest to catch Shula will stay on track. Make no mistake about it, this all about BB and his Legacy!! I’m officially a Bucs fan now and hope to see some exciting games with Gronk and Tommy Boy, so get ready, it’s going to be a great ride!!

Welcome aboard! We can always use some enthusiasm around here.

  39. unbelievable Says:

Lol they already have homes in New York and California, so they obviously don’t care about taxes or regulations.

They came to Tampa so Brady could have a hand on the offense (unlike in NE) AND because of all the weapons already here.

    Simple as that.

  40. Lloyd Olson Says:

Anyone to ignorant to spell someone’s name shouldn’t write a column, the Patriots had the win record they did from being better than anyone else, you don’t go to 9 Super Bowl’s and win 6 of them by Accident, come from behind
As they have done wasn’t a accident, losers are losers for the same reason as some who cry about being beat

  41. Oneilbucs Says:

youngbucs cookie I just bring facts that’s all yall have opinion I bring facts . No other team wanted Brady and yall can’t name no other team that wanted him . And as for me I would have spent the money on more defense . Because when we had a good defense we won a lot of games . And look I don’t have to agree with youabout the team . That’s the problem with this loser fan base . I will say this if Brady have to throw 45 to 50 times a game we are going to lose and Brady will be done mid season .

I’ve come to accept my fate, and find a sense of pride in the fact that I have never become somebody’s bandwagon fan.

In the long run, when we win, the satisfaction will be real when I feel it; satisfaction in knowing I have never wavered in my fandom!!
