How A QB Legend Can Help DBs

Bucs cornerbacks coach Kevin Ross is living proof what playing with a living legend at quarterback can do for a defensive back.

Ross played for the Kansas City Chiefs back in 1993, when the Chiefs acquired a quarterback from the San Francisco 49ers. You may have heard of the guy.

Joe Montana.

At the time, Ross moved to safety. And today when he spoke to the local pen and mic club via Zoom, Ross said Montana taught him how to play safety.

Montana “taught me what he was looking at,” Ross said. Montana said he was looking at Ross’ “feet, my eyes… I learned a whole lot from him. Just by talking to him.”

Ross, however, is not telling his corners about that. He added that coaching up them up is not about him, but about getting his players ready no matter if they are facing park-violating, home-invading, NFLPA-ignoring Bucs quarterback Tom Brady in daily practices or preparing for the gauntlet of quarterbacks the Bucs will face this year including Drew Brees (twice), Matty Ice (twice), Pat Mahomes, Aaron Rodgers, Jared Goff and Matt Stafford.

Ross took a page out of Ric Flair’s playbook.

“When you want to be the best you have to play the best,” Ross said. “You don’t get your name or reputation for playing Joe Blow. We welcome it. We embrace it. And we are looking forward to it.”

There is chatter among NFL observers wondering if the Bucs young secondary is up to the challenge to step up and be as good as the Bucs’ front seven to make the defense elite.

Facing the quarterbacks Joe listed above, we will find out just how much the defensive backs have grown.

Pressure up front will help the young guys. May take a couple games for everyone to click but I feel good.

Joe, please refer to TB12 as Mr. GOAT!!! After your 5 years of butt smooching JW (erroneously calling him American’s QB) you must pay homage to the greatest QB of all time!! Not sure you are cleared in hot to disparage the greatest single human being to strap on a QB1’s role!

If you want to do something useful, start protesting season ticket holders who are being told “see ya next year” as too many Sheeple in Tampa are cringing over this China flu! Glazers bring in TB12 & Gronk to go with BA & the stellar cast, yet tell us watch on TV! It is an OUTRAGE!!!

Rise up Tampa Bay & make it clear to the anarchists trying to ruin the best season of football here in decades! We will not be DENIED!!

    Joe,,
Like ur website but it is getting tiring reading about Brady and each time having ur same introduction about home invading ,Park and NFL etc. Same for Gronk. Really enjoy ur articles but the same nonsense each time gets old. It’s not even close to each time. Joe appreciates your respectful feedback. –Joe
    Thx

    Joe.

So what about highlighting the nicknames in red like you do for the Peter King one? That way the people who are triggered by it can just skip over it easier. Everybody’s happy, Everybody wins.

  5. PSL Bob Says:

Re the topic, several of us, including you Joe, have commented numerous times about how practicing against this Brady-led offense can only help the DBs hone their craft.

  6. SB Says:

UM Joe…….Tell me if I am incorrect.
This Exact same secondary used to pick off your man crush on a daily basis when they were ROOKIES! right? That would be incorrect. Regardless, media is not allowed to watch practice during the season outside of stretching and a few drills. –Joe
I am ok with your tired a$$ adjectives when they are Accurate as a plausible description. FnA man when are you gonna stop describing JW..2 (Because even the FLIPPIN’ Kicker for the Aint’s wouldn’t surrender his number for Mr.5000) as “America’s QB”
Dude isn’t even “Americas 3rd string QB”
You were wrong in the first place and you are at least 6 times more wrong now.
The America’s Quarterback nickname was given here in 2014, long before Jameis became a Buccaneer and it didn’t have everything to do with his play. Joe liked it, and it’s really nothing more than that. –Joe

Keep defending yourself Joe. Joe is not defending anything, nor is Joe telling anyone they have to like anything. It’s not a right or wrong thing at all, but you can pretend it is if you want to. Joe doesn’t have a customer service department, a feedback link or ask people what they like. Joe just does his thing, just like you do yours.–Joe
No need to change right? You are wrong Joe and you know it. Why keep holding on to it.???

    Because you can?

Then go climb Everest……Because it is there.

Joe I have been here for 9 years. Even though you took my original handle 6 years ago and won’t give it back.
Make no bones about it, I am not telling you how to run your business. Suggestions is all that us Long Time readers can give you.
I get it that you have your own schtick but when it causes others to kevetch to an Nth degree…………….well…….
I don’t care. I ain’t leaving your site because of one or two trademarks you are trying to establish even if I don’t believe in them.
    Just sayin man.

    Dear Joe,
    Please don’t change a damn thing. 👍

  10. Iamabuc Says:

The thing about your introductions Joe is that why a positive intro for Jameis and a negative one for the Goat…….your wrong, period.

  11. Iamabuc Says:

Don’t complaing when Brady negates you an interview, Joe. You brought it upon yourself for being so disrespectful…..🤔

  12. Iamabuc Says:

The thing about your intro Joe is: Why a positive one for Jameis and a negative one for the Goat?….please explain…..

  13. Joe Says:

Why a positive one for Jameis and a negative one for the Goat?….please explain…..

Simple. Joe finds (and found) Brady getting run out of a park, barging into a total stranger’s house and telling the NFLPA to f’ off funny as hell. And so did Tampa mayor Jane Castor who cut a video for BSPN about it. Interestingly, Joe has never heard one word from anyone complaining about Castor cutting a video about it. But God forbid Joe has fun with it! smh

Should Joe start referring to Brady as the New York Post did recently as a park “trespasser” and “breaking into houses?”

  14. Joe Says:

Don’t complaing when Brady negates you an interview, Joe.

Damn. Joe won’t know what to do with himself. Joe’s been cussed out by sports legends before. And oddly enough they’ve apologized too. 🙂

  15. Joe Says:

    your wrong, period.

So you are saying that all of this is a Chinese hoax? That Brady never got run out of a park? That him barging into a total stranger’s house is all a work of fiction? That he didn’t hold practices at Berkeley Prep when the NFLPA advised him to stop?

You really want to stand on that hill?

  16. David Says:

Those young DBs Have the talent. The difference how they mature through the season. If they make strides like they did last year, they will be great. The biggest factor, though, is the front seven getting pressure on the opposing quarterback quickly

  17. SB Says:

    Jeeeesh this went south quickly.
Despite my occasional needling I luv ya Joe!

  18. unbelievable Says:

Lol at grown men getting this upset over some stupid schtick / joke with ridiculous name intros.

  20. SB Says:

    Jeeeesh Joe!

Let’s see. The subject was “How a QB legend can help DBs”. The bulk of the discussion turned out to be the pros and cons of Joes shtick.

Joe certainly has no control how commenters will respond on a given day.

Keep doing your own thing Joe. 😘 With all of your many daily posts you are going to get a wide range of reactions. It’s all good!

  25. Blogtalkfootball.com Says:

America’s Quarterback is not a positive moniker for Jameis. It is tongue in cheek wrapped in sarcasm filled in irony.

The colored words on Peter King’s preface are links, that is why they are different colors. I sorta wish Joe would link to the foot rubbing story for Gronk. I missed that one.

Those prefaced are what kept me coming back day after day when I found this here site, because I resonate with Joe’s sense of humor.

    Thanks, Joe!

  26. SB Says:

    Anyway……….Go Bucs!
    Give me a shout LUV!
