Hallway Retention & Uniqueness

Bucs defensive coordinator Todd Bowles

Todd Bowles coached superstar safeties Tyrann Matthieu and Jamal Adams as rookies, so it was time for Joe to ask the Tampa Bay defensive coordinator to share his perspective on Bucs rookie Antoine Winfield, Jr.

Joe’s heard loads of Winfield accolades from other coaches and teammates, but Bowles, who played the position in the NFL, has a more valuable and experienced perspective.

JoeBucsFan.com: Coach, you were around Tyrann Matthieu and Jamal Adams as rookies. Where does Antoine Winfield Jr., in such limited time, where does he kind of stack up in his talent and his potential from what you see?

Todd Bowles: Well, he’s a rookie; those guys had spring training.  Obviously, all good players, all instinctive players. I think Winfield’s his own player in his own right. Very heady. Very studious. Comes prepared all the time. He takes coaching, which is the biggest thing you can ask for a rookie. And he applies it, not just from the classroom. You can talk to him, pass him by in the hallway and say something, he’ll retain it. And that’s very encouraging and he puts it to use once he gets on the field. I really like that about him.

Winfield can’t make plays on the bench. And Joe will suggest there’s a strong reason the Bucs weren’t satisfied with the safety trio of Andrew Adams, Mike Edwards and Jordan Whitehead and drafted Winfield with a premium draft pick, whereas they were satisfied with their three 23-year-old returning cornerbacks.

Joe can’t wait to see Winfield on opening day.

Dudes gunna ball out, might be the X factor ball hawk we need to take this defense up a step.

Sounds like we can expect Winfield to be starting game 1 at this point.

And dont look now boys but we just about a week away from the season. This work week is basically over. One more work week to go then Monady the 7th starts the first week of the football calendar. Anticipation will build up all that week while the Bucs head to New Orleans….and we get a little warm up game for Thursday Night.

    GO BUCS!!!

Of course they had to use a “premium” draft pick!!!!!!!!!! Just another example of player replacement and no player development from this highly overrated and fraudulent coaching staff of ole stale biscuit and toilet bowles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If it was really about coaching why have they replaced so many players!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can’t wait until we are all discussing who the new GM and Head Coach will be in a short couple of months!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Pro bowl first year.

Sounds like he’s not at the same playing level of Matthieu or Adams at this point in their first seasons. But, as Bowles acknowledged he didn’t have the benefit of OTAs or spring training. If he’s as quick a learner as Bowles says he his and has the skill set everyone believes he does, he should mature into a great safety.

Realist, your posts are so taxing to read. You are entitled to your opinion even if nobody else on the planet agrees with them, but jeesh. It must be exhausting to be filled with so much hate, malice and negativity.

  7. Craig Says:

Hope he can stay healthy, the Bucs did need a bit more in the Safety play. Maybe the other kids will be bolstered by Winfield too.

Realist, do you live with your mother?

I really do skip over a certain someone’s posts every time. That person spews venom daily and almost hourly here. It is a bit of a pain but, it saves me the aggravation of reading negative garbage which would ruin my enjoyment of what other people have to say.

It is a shame that there is such a high tolerance level here by the Joes at times, though. The articles are the reason I keep coming back. They are worth my time.

    Oh well, Go Bucs!

Sounds like another non answer for the most part.
