Bryon Leftwich Talks Tristan Wirfs

August 27th, 2020

Rookie RT Tristan Wirfs

The Buccaneers’ rookie manbeast right tackle, No. 13 overall pick Tristan Wirfs, stopped jumping out of pools four weeks ago and jumped into the fire of his first training camp.

To date, Joe hasn’t heard anyone go overboard praising Wirfs, but on the flip side, nobody’s even hinted that he might be a liability with such little time to prepare and opening day only 17 days away.

Today, Joe asked offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich about the rookie right tackle’s strengths and learning curves. Leftwich offered no specifics — no surprise — but he did explain that Wirfs has done a fantastic job avoiding the naughty list.

“The best thing I can say about Tristan, you don’t really say his name too much. (Laughs) As a rookie offensive lineman, that’s a beautiful thing, right?” Leftwich replied. “Anytime you have to say his name a lot, there’s probably issues. But with Tristan, I haven’t really had to say his name but once or twice so far. Kid’s been having a good camp and hopefully he can continue that. He’s playing well for us right now.”

The word on Wirfs is that his progression has been steady and he’s certainly up for the NFL when it comes to strength, athleticism and learning.

It’s unfair to expect much more.

If Wirfs can survive his first few games without more than a couple of pass-blocking whiffs, then it should be smooth sailing ahead.

Wirfs > Dotson. Much much better. Of course a lawn chair would have been better than end of career Dotson.

The less we hear about O linemen especially young O linemen the better.

    sound encouraging!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!

I think it’s fair to say that we can expect Tristan to make some rookie mistakes early on and that we can expect the Bucs to slide some help to his side of the line, after several weeks I think we should start to see some real improvements in his game much the same way we saw improvements in Alex Cappa’s play the latter half of last year.

Be it in college, Wirfs has had more snaps at RT the last three years then any other player on our team. Yes, more then Haeg. He was a number 1 pick for a reason. He just needs to get use to the speed of the game, which I’m sure practicing against the leagues sack leader will get him ready for that. That’s why I’ve always harped on picking O linemen who’ve played the position in college from a good program, at a high level. Licht has only done that once before with D. Smith. How many drafts ago was that? Licht’s a slow learner, but he got it right this time.

Wirfs is a rookie. Will make a few bonehead errors. A lot on his young shoulders. But he seems up to the task. Just a little patience and I suspect he’ll fit in nicely. A good pick.

  7. PSL Bob Says:

They’re not going to leave him one-on-one against Pro-bowl veteran DEs when Brady needs time for a pass play to develop. He’ll get help from Gronk or OJ.

Sounds like a fair assessment to me.

Dotson was an above average pass blocker, but unfortunately he was one of the worst tackles in the NFL at run blocking.

Wirfs to the Pro Bowl in 2020, NFL All Rookie team too. Heard it here first.

I got a feeling this kid is gonna be real good once he gets it all down. right now he is adjusting and learning the NFl game. Very few..and I do mean very few come into this league and bust it wide open their 1st year. Watch him grow by leaps and bounds.

  12. SlyPirate541 Says:

It’s nice that he’s doing okay but I’d like to hear about at least one pancake.

The dude is too big, too athletic, and too powerful not to put a 2nd or 3rd stringer on his butt.

  13. SOEbuc Says:

He’ll get it. Straight man that has never loved a man’s ass and legs before.

Good stuff, Joe. Looks like Wirfs just might start for game one at NO. 🤗

Go Bucs! In BA I trust.
