Slant Passes

May 30th, 2020

Bucs rookie WR and slants.

When the subject of slant passes comes up, Joe gets the feeling one might have after downing a six-pack of the worst beer imaginable because there was no other liquid to drink, not even water.

Joe remembers when inept Lovie Smith was here and teams ran slants against his defenses at will. It’s like Lovie had never witnessed a slant pass, much less ever learned how to defend one.

A Pop Warner coach would have known better!

Joe brings up slant passes after researching Tyler Johnson. The Bucs rookie receiver from Minnesota was drafted largely because Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians, while watching the Outback Bowl, was so impressed with Johnson that he told his son the Bucs had to get him.

And so they drafted him.

While watching a YouTube video of Johnson’s plays against Auburn that January day at the Den of Depression (is this the year Joe puts that moniker in mothballs?) in the Outback Bowl, BSPN play-by-play man Jason Benetti mentioned at the 6:26 mark that Johnson led the nation last season in catching slant passes.

(Notice on the clip Joe linked to that Johnson tried to fall down before stepping on the sideline to enable the clock to keep winding down? That’s a smart, heads-up player, man.)

Why is Joe bringing this all up? If Johnson is so damn good catching and getting YAC on slant passes to lead the entire nation, will Arians use that strength and talent and hit “Pause” each week on his no-risk-it-no-biscuit offense once or twice a game to get the most out of Johnson?

And will park-violating, home-invading quarterback Tom Brady take advantage of that skillset as well?

In the immortal words of all-knowing Gin of Rummy, Moe Howard, we shall see.

The Bucs will do what Brady wants and does.

  2. REDZONE BA Fan Says:

Tompa Brady will dictate the plays….Not BL or BA…..Tompa will do what is necessary to stay upright and stay healthy…period. WATCH!

  3. SOEbuc Says:

Fine by me if Tom is all around offense coach. Kid runs great routes and now coming in to play with Brady, Godwin, and Evans. Film shows his amazing abilities in tough coverage.

Putting Godwin 2.0 back in the slot!!!

    GO BUCS!!!

all hail big storm wavemaker ale…

but…you also might want to try [Sorry. They are not a sponsor. — Joe]

  5. adam from ny Says:

brady will make an example out of wirfs and yell at him so bad in front of all the lineman at some point…

    to make an example…

and so the thought pops off in all veteran lineman’s heads of:

“dang i don’t want this mofo yellin” at my azz like that”

  6. Tampabaybucfan Says:

It’s quite simple….>Brady looks for and hits the open receiver…..that will include TJ……slants or otherwise.

  7. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Tyler Johnson had better numbers than Chris Godwin in college. Both were strong in route running, hands and the ability win the battle of catching the ball from their opponents.

I’m hoping Johnson turns out to be another Godwin.

  8. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

    Comparison between Godwin and Johnson:

    Chris Godwin (6’1″, 205lbs) 40 time (4.42)
last year in college (59 Rec, 982 yds, avg 16.6)

Tyler Johnson (6’2″, 205lbs) did not run the 40 (hurt) pro-day cancelled (covid-19)
last year in college (86 Rec, 1318 yds, avg 15.3)

If Johnson would have ran below 4.5 at the combine, he would surely have been first or second round pick. By him not running, it dropped his stock down to the 3rd round. The Bucs were lucky to get time in the 5th. If he lives up to his college numbers, he will be one of the biggest steals in this year’s draft.

Hog – I too want to know more about wins than fantasy stats. What did that 5k bring us? A fired QB who is now a third string backup.

People misinterpret No Risk it No Biscuit. It doesn’t mean chuck it 50 on 1st, 2nd and 3rd down. The plan has always been take what they give you and hit the open man. It’s effective and demoralizing the defense. If you are known for being a poor decision maker and risk taker the defense is energized. They stand ready to intercept, because the opportunity is DEFINTELY going to be there.

I’ll take 2k yards if we win. Fantasty Shmantasy.

    seriously joe???

you altered my post to make it sound like i’m obsessed with your sponsors beer???

    wtf

all i did was praise 2 beers including “your guys”…and there wasn’t extensive praise or anything…just mentioning a good beer…

so if i said i liked the saints and might attend a game, should you delete and alter my post because the bucs are basically your guys???

    something seems very off…

please delete my entire post – don’t alter it to how you see fit for it to read….

  12. Sport Says:

Adam – we used to be able to have a beer discussion on this site before there was a beer sponsor. And it was 99% Joe stating how every craft beer is disgusting and the only beer that was good rhymes with Spud Night.

Sponsor or not, I’ll take any form of change over the stubbornness of the past.

The folks at Big Storm are good people. Easy to support them.

Would you stop with the stupid nicknames

  14. Rob in Land O Lakes Says:

I’ve watched several videos of games Tyler Johnson has played, including the Outback Bowl but they all focused on just his receiving skills. Not to go full Michael Clayton here on anyone, but is it me or is this guy a pretty good blocker for a receiver as well? I’d urge everyone t click the link Joe provided in the article and tell me what you think.

  15. BigHog Says:

Sport: there is no risk in taking what the DEFENCE gives…the rusk is taking it to the DEFENCE as so to keep them on their heels because all they see is booms to the left and then booms to the right….you know damn well if NE12 can only muster 2,000 yards …the fantasy league is where he will pick up his next big payday next year!!! Ha ha ha ha ha “I can’t breathe”!!!!

  16. Bucsfanman Says:

What Tampabaybucsfan said. Hit the open receiver, it’s just that simple. They are NOT all “go” routes in this offense.

  17. Leighroy Says:

Don’t fault joe for being raised on a diet of “spud night,” gooey butter cookies and toasted ravioli. He can’t help his regional biases!

  18. Stanglassman Says:

I was watching some YouTube Tyler Johnson breakdown on YouTube and the guy dinged TJ for going down on that play to keep the clock rolling. He thought he was afraid of contact. Just bad.
The guys at Real Bucs Talk are doing a good youtube breakdown on all the Buc draft and FA players. Good zoom interviews too.

Try walking into Applebees and start telling the crowd how Chilis has better burgers and wings. See how long you last.

  20. adam from ny Says:

sorry joe, i’m a berns steakhouse type…or a high end plate of sushi will do…

glad to hear you’re an applebees, hands all in the covid buffet type dude…

maybe that’s where the difference is…

but it’s definitely an uber cheesy move to adjust my quotes to fit your noggin’s etiquette – as opposed to removing my entire post… especially after i requested it – and have been posting with you for something like a solid decade…

    geez man…

i know, you know i wasn’t downsizing your sponsor on any level…

the reason i know this is because i know you better than you know yourself

  21. John Sinclear Says:

Do the Bucs have a slant pass in their playbook ??

  22. SOEbuc Says:

    Land O Lakes

You know who is another strong blocking WR on that side of the roster? Godwin. Then you got Wirfs and Evans on the right side for all the idiots that say Tom HAS to have a catching RB to be the GOAT.

  23. Buc1987 Says:

Bucsfanman…there’s just too many weapons at Brady’s disposal for a d to cover.

    Gonna be fun to watch.

  24. SOEbuc Says:

“Do the Bucs have a slant pass in their playbook??”

I couldn’t tell if it was really good sarcasm or you didn’t watch Godwin much in 2019?

  25. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

There is simply no way Tyler Johnson should have lasted until the 5th round. He’s a steal there. If you watch college football regularly, and watched him play, you know barring injury he’s gonna be a very good pro receiver. He was a one man wrecking crew in the Outback Bowl.

  26. Bird Says:

    Test

  27. DaBux Says:

Just watched the highlight real. Kid has that “it” with soft hands, smart route running, and killer breakaway speed. TB12 will LOVE this kid. 3 dangerous receivers plus Miller as the occasional “gas the DBs” route runner? Yeah, this will be fun.

  28. Barack's Crack Pipe Says:

    >Try walking into Applebees and start telling the crowd how Chilis has better burgers and wings. See how long you last.<

You just reminded me of people getting kicked out of McDonald's for saying "Where's the beef?" LOL

  29. BigMacAttack Says:

Joe, I don’t criticize you often but Tom Brady deserves a better welcome to Tampa than that. Park-violating, Home invading. It was funny and cute once or twice but it’s getting old. You called Jameis Turnover, America’s QB. If anyone is America’s QB, it’s Tom Brady. He’s a pretty commanding presence and you should get on his good side and show him some respect. I just hate seeing that, (which you will likely add to with any other mistake he makes) on every article for the next 2 years. If he comes in and blows it, calling what you want, but right now he deserves better. Step up your game bro

  30. SOEbuc Says:

BigMacAttack…Agreed. Just keeps the America’s QB era that needs to be bleach cleaned in every way in Tampa. I’ll be okay with “the Goat” if you have to have a nick name.

  31. BigHog Says:

Yes TJ will be a good receiver here, more than likely he lasted so long was I think his 40 yard dash speed is more like 4.55 than a say 4,42 like CG12 but if you can ball you can ball!!! I CAN’T BREATHE!!!

  32. BigHog Says:

NE12 no longer has the skill set to be America’s QB! DEFENCES are catching up to his what was a great game as his skill slowly erode with age! SOEbuc bleach this “I can’t breathe”

  33. Mrs. Entertainment Says:

Big Mac — I totally agree. I know the use of those two monikers may have been funny once or twice, but now I’ve really had it. I looked beyond the Jameis descriptors for years, even though they irked me. (I knew it was meant to needle us mildy and to bring on reader chuckles and debate, i.e. my username. I get it.) But the Brady stuff is too much. We are now a internationally-known team, and this website is the absolute best source for Bucs news in the world. Let’s get clever and maybe only refer to your two TB12 descriptors from time to time? Let’s show off how fun and expert we are without seeming churlish. I know the Joes will say something like, “We write about what we like, and if you don’t like that, go elsewhere.” I don’t want to go elsewhere. This is my absolute favorite website. I refresh it at least five times a day, and have for years and years. Please? Love you guys.
