Not Buying The Hype

May 1st, 2020

Non-believer.

It seemed to be getting crowded on the Bucs-to-the-playoffs bandwagon after Tampa Bay won the offseason.

But one NFL Network talking head isn’t hopping on board. That would be former Packers receiver James Jones. He doesn’t see the Bucs making the playoffs.

And why is that? Because he thinks Father Time is already tapping on Tom Brady’s shoulder.

“I’ve gotta say ‘no,'” Jones told Michael Robinson and DeAngelo Hall. “It is a bunch of big-time NFC teams that have gotten better and were good last year.

“I don’t think the Tampa Bay Buccaneers make the playoffs and the reason why I say that is that last year Tom Brady had the best defense in football and still couldn’t get it done.

“Yeah, he didn’t have no weapons. He didn’t have no weapons. But if you really watch the film there are a lot of guys open on the field. Now he’s missing throws.”

Robinson and Hall seemed absolutely flummoxed by the words coming out of Jones’ mouth. But Jones has echoed Joe’s lone concern with Brady: Father Time is undefeated.

It’s easy to get lost in the headrush of Brady. You know, the girl, the money, the fame, the celebrity, the rings. But at the end of the day, Brady will be 43 on opening day. When is the last time a 43-year old quarterback dominated the NFL?

The oldest quarterback to start and win a Super Bowl is Brady when he was 41. Peyton Manning was 39 when he won his last Super Bowl with Denver.

Jones also added he doesn’t know if Brady can make the downfield throws required by Bucco Bruce Arians quarterbacks. Why? Because he didn’t see Brady throw long last year.

There’s a lot more about Brady and the Bucs in the NFL Network video below.

Well this will make the haters wake up to good news

  2. Ra'Shad Says:

That’s the thing. We don’t need Brady to win games all by himself. We need someone who will make the right reads and not force things. Brady has seen it all as far as coverages. So if the 1st option is not there, then 2 and then check down. Simple!!!!

  3. Lord Says:

Lol I remember him specifically hitting I think Dorset on a bomb for a TD last year and I don’t watch film that’s just one casual memory

  4. Lord Says:

Yeah just checked and Dorset had a 58 yard TD lol

  5. SOFIERCE Says:

Sounds like more fuel for TB12 to use.

  6. BUC CHEEKS Says:

WELCOME to the DOOM n GLOOM ROOM!!! HAPPY FRIDAY EVERYONE

  7. Bucsfanman Says:

It’s just flat out false that Arian’s offense is totally downfield EVERY play. I’m so tired of hearing that. There were countless times that WRs and TEs were wide-open underneath and they weren’t thrown to.
I’m 100% sure that Brady will be just fine in this offense.

  8. Joeypoppems Says:

The “lack of arm strength” criticism is tiring. The Bucs top 2 options at QB in FA were Brady and Bridgewater. Neither known for big arms but both known for lack of turnovers.

They didnt bring want those guys because they thought they could throw for 5000 yards and 40 TDs. They wanted them because they can literally cut the teams turnovers in half.

BA clearly believes Bucs beating Bucs was the reason for missing the playoffs. Brady wont put this team behind. Nobody should care about 50+ yard passes lol.

  9. TheBradyBunch Says:

These shows usually need an antagonist. Boring TV if they all agree with each other. However, Belichick usually knows when it is time to cut bait with aging vets. For him to let the GOAT just walk out the front door there should be some concern. Brady is ancient at this point to playing in the NFL. Let’s hope he has a little more left in the tank for the next two seasons. With all of these options he won’t have to throw deep balls the entire game either.

  10. stpetebucsfan Says:

First I think we all agree with Joe about “Father Time” always winning out in the end. It’s determining that end that is most difficult.

Let’s stipulate that TB12 is not the same player today as he was ten years ago, what we’re really after is what part of his game has diminished and how severely.

Payton Manning was not the same QB for the Broncos as he was for the Colts. To the best of my knowledge however there is no asterisk next to that Bronco’s title.

The truth is that as much as it pains me to say it..D.R. and our defensive fans are right…the titles have to be anchored by defense. TB12, Gronk will get the most run, but they are only going to be part of a TEAM that succeeds or fails.

IMO TB12 is not here to “carry” the Bucs other than in terms of leadership. I do not expect him to be flashy and dropping dimes on targets 40 yards down field.

I do expect him to play “within” whatever abilities he still retains. He will NOT BEAT US!!! And after the last five years that will be a MAJOR improvement!!!

Our post season hopes actually are pinned to this defense. It has the “possibility” of being truly special. This is why I would not have minded a trade up for Simmons. I think Winfield takes any sting out of not getting Simmons.

We are now strong from the front to the back of our defense. We’re even starting to build a little depth.

I hope this is Todd Bowles’ last year with the Bucs. I hope this defense blossoms into the great…not just good…defense we believe it can be.

Headlines will be Brady’s…success will be our D’s.

  11. gotbbucs Says:

    Hahaha…..James Jones.

Is there anymore illiterate idiots out there with a hot take? How do these guys get TV gigs?

  12. Afo Says:

All this fools that couldn’t say a word about Belichick draft are hating on Brady. Lol, I don’t why people have career on hating

  13. Anonymous Says:

Arians system is overrated, he said it himself that you check down when you can’t not everytime you go for a 60 yards pass, that’s what affected us last season. Arians is pretty Brady will fit in perfectly before he signed him

  14. dmatt Says:

James Jones is simply giving his backward opinion on Brady. It’s good that Brady saved his arm from throwing deep, meaning he rested n saved his arm n he can put that arm to good use with the receivers we have. Winston threw for over 5,000 yds with last years offense, then in come Brady with a very low int average per year n gronk being the beast mode TE he is n we don’t make the playoffs, give me a break. Did James Jones suffer from concussions? This team was playoff ready last year but between multiple missed field goals/extra points n Winston’s high ints, we shot ourselves in the foot n became our own worst enemy. And, add a rookie playmaker safety/cb to an already improved defense n we win all games that were close last year. James Jones need to remain quarantined once we go back to normalcy.

  15. macout247 Says:

lol james jones was a product of elite QB play – what a scrub

  16. ©MadMax Says:

Another Madea! Btw, where’s our resident Madea (Bighog)….he’ll go off on this one in 3…2…1….

  17. mark2001 Says:

Eureka…one of the few needles in the proverbial NFL haystack was found that predicts gloom and doom for the Bucs.

  18. Alexander Nascimento Says:

    Hey, Joe
Brady was 41 when he won his sixth ring
Thanks for being this nonstop Bucs news website
    Love you guys

  19. Defense Rules Says:

Personally think that James Jones makes some good points, as do you Joe … Father Time is undefeated. However, it’s still about TEAM.

The Ravens won the Super Bowl twice in the past 20 years; once in 2000 with QBs Tony Banks & Trent Dilfer and again in 2012 with QB Joe Flacco. Both seasons it was about TEAM, not about who the QB was.

If you look at the last 20 Super Bowl champions (2000-2019), there are a few ‘abnormalities’, BUT … for the most part, DEFENSE wins championships. The SB Champion had a Top-10 defense 16 times (80%), and the Top-5 defense won it in 12 of those 20 years. BTW, the #1 defense won the SB 6 times in those 20 years.

The SB Champion had a Top-10 offense 13 times (65%), and the Top-5 offense won it in 8 of those 20 years. BTW, the #1 offense won the SB only once in those 20 years.

In 10 of those 20 years the SB Champion had BOTH a Top-10 offense AND a Top-10 defense (the word BALANCE comes to mind). However, in only 3 years did the SB Champ have BOTH a Top-5 offense AND a Top-5 defense.

IMO, if the Bucs are to make a play for the SB this year, they’ll need BOTH a Top-10 defense AND a Top-10 offense. Since 2013 that’s proven to be true in all but one year. It’s about TEAM.

  20. Joe Says:

Payton Manning was not the same QB for the Broncos as he was for the Colts. To the best of my knowledge however there is no asterisk next to that Bronco’s title.

Sure there is. Didn’t Brock Osweiler start seven games? 🙂

  21. Joe Says:

Is there anymore illiterate idiots out there with a hot take? How do these guys get TV gigs?

Helps to have played in a league a few years.

  22. Youngbucs Says:

Honestly I’m not trying to start anything but I’m going to say it. Jones is a Winston fan he was pushing a 100mil contract for him all season. You guys can watch the videos. Anything he says about the Bucs can be taken with a grain of salt.

  23. Wayne PEREZ Says:

Brady will be great like he always is he will have 5 great players to catch his perfectly thrown balls I see a very exciting season finally with 20 less interceptions

  24. BucU Says:

James Jones MUST share the same agent as Jameis Winston (@Joe – any idea?). He hollered all season last year that Jameis is a “$100M quarterback” even though the timing of when he would say it was curious.

  25. ItzOK Says:

Itz not the first time a team or the Bucs even have been off season champs and it rarely does translate to on the field success. Recall the Eagles dream team. We can all debate the move to Brady over Jameis. Long term vs short term. We all know the pros and cons of the moves made here. At this point the decisions are made and time will tell who is right. But if the Bucs dont make the playoffs especially with the expanded playoffs this will have been a disaster.

  26. Swampbuc Says:

They need to bring James Jones to the One Buc Place and have him say that so the players realize they just got the 2004 Brad Johnson at best.

  27. BucDan Says:

I was all for JJ saying ADAMANTLY that Jameis was a $100M QB. He just had to get rid of the TOs.

Now we add TWO GOATS to the team and one at the most important position, and he just writes the team off?

    Oh, JJ! I’m hurt!

    Go Bucs!

  28. Oneilbucs Says:

Why do yall get mad because someone else has another opinion about Brady being in Tampa ? Brady hasn’t done anything in Tampa . But he does have a point because ain’t no number one defense in Tampa Bay . We don’t have a runningback that can close out games like Brady had his hold career in NewEngland . So he do have a good point rather yall like it or not .

  29. Ndog Says:

Super Bowl win or bust plain and simple. Anything else will be a clossal failure.

  30. AwShbucs Says:

James Jones is speaking out of his rectum.

  31. Oneilbucs Says:

youngbucs Jamies is gone and he’s going to a coach and a organization that actually develop quarterbacks and other players on the team . They play team football while yall only worry about quarterbacks . But now no excuses superbowl or bust !!!

  32. 1sparkybuc Says:

Brady won’t have to throw long like Jameis did. He will have better protection and a much improved ground attack. He will be able to sustain long drives and actually make use of the TEs as receivers. Brady should also get more opportunities since the pass defense likely won’t be the sieve it was last year. We’ll be fine if he and Gronkowski can stay healthy. Hopefully they retire as SB champions and we find our QB of the future fast

  33. Oneilbucs Says:

I’m not giving no excuses I don’t want to hear about the covid – 19 because every team has to deal with it . I don’t want to hear about the defense because you guys and the national media said our defense was good and ranked number 5 . I don’t want to hear about the running game or the kicking game because all of you said it was Jamies fault why we lost all those games . NO EXCUSES SUPERBOWL !!!!

  34. Youngbucs Says:

Oneilbucs for the reasons that you’re mad Brady is in Tampa. Does that answer you’re question.

  35. Youngbucs Says:

Ok oneilbucs than why are you here go to the saints.

  36. Afo Says:

James Jones wanted the Bucs to give turnover machine $100M contract

  37. Youngbucs Says:

Oneilbucs why are you here then go to the saints blogs. Let them know they have a future hof QB.

  38. Youngbucs Says:

They say they don’t want to hear any excuses. And that’s what they do here everyday for the 3rd string QB. đŸ€Ș

  39. Buc1987 Says:

Jones says he didn’t get it done in NE with a good defense….

Get what done? He DID make the playoffs though…

    What was his point again?

  40. Youngbucs Says:

The more crazy thing is none of us for these moves has made any excuses. Everyone’s just excited about the draft free agency and the overall direction of the team. There just a handful that want to tear down before it starts lol.

  41. Buc1987 Says:

Youngbucs…how come they can’t get over Jameis?

    Is it a color thing?

  42. Buc1987 Says:

It HAS to be a color thing.

I didn’t want to go there….but it’s obvious at this point.

Day in and day out defending a QB that’s not even on the freaking team anymore.

    Never seen anything like it.

I swear if he was white…you wouldn’t see all this defense by the same posters.

  43. Youngbucs Says:

    I don’t know I’m black and I’m over himđŸ€·đŸœâ€â™‚ïž

  44. Buc1987 Says:

lol Is it an FSU thing then?

    I’m a Noles fan…so it can’t be that.

  45. Buc1987 Says:

We know from BigHog…that Jameis was “BLACK BALLED.”

So that’s his stance in plain sight.

  46. Buc fan from day 1 Says:

Looks like the truth struck a nerve lol

  47. Big_Buc$ Says:

Well let me start by saying New England went 12-4 last season. So this Brady didn’t have weapons isn’t that true. Correct me if I’m wrong but Julian Edelman was Super Bowl MVP? Phillip Dorsett, Josh Gordon, Antonio Brown played with Tom Brady? I know two were released but if they weren’t would you still be saying Brady didn’t have weapons? I would have like to see how him and Antonio Brown messed during the season. He had weapons. Nobody was saying this when they started 8-0 or 9-0 before they just got destroyed by Lamar Jackson and the Ravens. They also lost head to head with the Super Bowl Champs Kansas City. Not to mention he had the number 1 defense. Don’t get me wrong I’m ready to see what Brady and Gronk can do in Tampa but If we can’t run the ball and the defense can play all 16 games instead of the last 5 weeks the results won’t be any different. I’m going to say that the ball will be spread out and I don’t know if we will have two 1000 yard receivers. I think we will see more Jump Balls to Evans along with Gronk inside the 5 and take advantage of their size.

  48. Youngbucs Says:

Ok but brown played 1gm and please what 3-4 gms lol. Here you go with what-if they played the whole season you lose cred bright there beat it.

  49. Chris K Says:

We need some non believers. The hype is real and sometimes you need your doubters to add a little motivation.

  50. Youngbucs Says:

Oh and you know the #1 excuse about a run gm ? Brady didn’t have a 100yd rusher last year not 1gm. In some gms the backs were the leading receivers that won’t happen in Tampa. I believe Edelman tip-off 100yds 3 times he had nothing and still produced at a high level.

  51. gotbbucs Says:

    @1987

Shhhhh….. Don’t let everyone in on their secret.

I’m a white guy from Iowa, I could care less what color, creed, or religion these guys are. Play good football and don’t make an ass of yourself off the field, thats all I care about.

Winston played some bad football and couldn’t keep his hands to himself off the field. I don’t buy his self righteous bullsh!t now that the cards are down, so I’m happy to see him go.
The Saints have very little invested in him and will throw him to the wolves quickly if he doesn’t pick up their scheme or if he keeps handing out candy in practice.

  52. Ndog Says:

I love how Brady gets an excuse for not having weapons last year yet our coach says we didn’t want Jameis back cause his last two games where he had no weapons. You can’t make this stuff up.

  53. Ndog Says:

BTW I don’t see many haters I just people that are not sold on bringing in a player that is declining for a player that is getting better. Say what you want but last year Jameis Winston got better in many areas and was playing in the first year in an offense that simply is proven to produce both high point and high TO seasons. On the other hand we decided to go with a player that while playing in the same offensive for the last 20 years has gotten worse each of the last four seasons. There is no disputing that as that is FACT. Some of us just don’t think that is a good idea but we still love the team because they are our team and it just pains us that they have people running it that clearly couldn’t care or less about the long term and want to take a very bad gamble to make themselves look great in the short term. There really is no other way to look at it, that’s why it is SuperBowl victory or bust, cause they are gambling so you either win it all or you lose bottom line.

  54. Mike Johnson Says:

We will probably make the playoiffs. But I do not see us winning a superbowl in brady’s 2 yr career with the Bucs. And that is what it is suppose to be about. Nobody here can answer the question of who will step in and take this team when Brady goes down. But I can. He will go down. Its gonna be an unproven vet who cannot cut the mustard. I don’t think the Brady thing was well thought out. Sure, it pleases some fans. But I’m not feelin it at all. its ok to be desperate. But outright stupidity is quite another thing. I’ll be here guys to say, I told you so come Dec.

  55. Youngbucs Says:

    đŸ„±

  56. Dapostman Says:

Pretty simple, if the 2020 Bucs don’t make the playoffs with 7 out of 16 teams making it then Licht, Arians, Leftwich, Bowles and the whole staff need to get the axe. Winston’s 30/30 vision has been fixed so there are no excuses.

    No playoffs means a reboot.
Playoffs and an early exit means you get another shot in 2021.
A successful season IMO will be a Final 4 appearance.

  57. DBS Says:

I see some roaches crawling around in self pitty that did not get their way. Now they hope the team fails so they can say I told you so. Crawl back in your hole and feel sorry for yourself. The rest of us will hope for a good season and see how it plays out with the new players.

  58. ©MadMax Says:

Care to put your money where your mouth is Mike? I’ll throw a stack at it! 1K….bet?

  59. Youngbucs Says:

We all know the expectations for the team bunch of nut huggers. And we’re embracing it. If they fail or succeed is why the play the gms lol. Y’all acting like you’re scaring people hollering Super Bowl or bust ok and. We could never it think super bowl before. Let’s watch and see how it plays out. Sag bad bunch you guys are hoping for injuries to Brady and brees for what ? A never was lol

  60. Ndog Says:

Unlike some of you I think Superbowl every year, but I am realistic about building, not some instant oatmeal crap. We shall see, which is what makes it fun, but if it doesn’t result in a Superbowl trophy in the next two years and somehow Mr. Winston wins one during his career Bruce Arian’s will be looked at as the fraud, lying, backstabbing, overrated coach he is.

Have a great day everyone!!! 😁

  61. Jason Says:

The same James Jones who said Jameis deserved 30 Mil per after the season ended 😂

  62. Adrnagy Says:

Have it your way. 1 or 2 yrs and then what ….? Back to the bottom of the nfc south. ! Yes .. for another 10 yrs. until Rodgers /packers divorce.
    Hahaha.

  63. Mike Evans Goat Says:

James Jones just has a hard on for Jameis. Clearly biased and upset Jameis was replaced. 100 million dollar man lmao

  64. Adrnagy Says:

Jameis will have is 25-30 m a yr contract in 1-2 yrs.
we in the other hand will be at the bottom of the nfc south.

There’s nothing more special to grow your own and they make it to the HOF.

  65. Youngbucs Says:

Ndog you’re not realistic about building you need a strong corner stone to build. And in football the corner stone starts at QB. And you’re stuck on an average QB. Realistic nah you’re never that delusional that’s more like it.

  66. Ndog Says:

    EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!

  67. Youngbucs Says:

Jameis will never get 30 mil a year stop it

  68. Isaac haggins Says:

There is still time to put a real backup behind Brady !! New Orleans won last year without Brees and they may again this year ?? The Bucs have a 43 year old back up with the ( on paper) best and most complete team in a decade and they are ignoring the backup. QB .
Btw D line depth , Kicker and proven pass catching back are all things that are affordable and fixable !

  69. Ndog Says:

Average QBs don’t throw for 5,000 yards in a season and have a seasond comparable in the first five years to Peyton Manning and/or Drew Brees. Argue all you want those are facts and some ways he had better years in his first 5 years than Peyton Manning or Drew Brees. I don’t know how else you want to look at that but if believe those two guys suck it is what it is in you’re opinion. Just imagine if the Colts had given up on Peyton Manning and the Chargers did give up on Drew Brees and look how that turned out for them. Bro this is not hard you never, in any industry, go from young and getting better to old and getting worse ESPECIALLY in sports. I know you want to be excited, I know you have been brainwashed by the Stroud’s of the world but the facts and history say you are wrong.

  70. 813bucboi Says:

    ndog

what about the 14games and 24INTs before those last 2 games?…lol…

i guess 5years of no playoffs and 30INTs in 1 season isnt enough to prove he’s a BUST!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  71. Ndog Says:

I didn’t say the last two games the lying, backstabbing, self promoter did. Don’t blame me blame that jacka$$.

  72. catcard202 Says:

Ndog…. We on the same wave, brother!

  73. Afo Says:

Jamies is not an average QB, Jamies is a bust and will end up like Gerald McCoy

  74. Ndog Says:

813 in regard to the no playoffs in 5 years we’ve been through this a thousand times if you don’t have a defense at all, if you have no running game at all, and you have no kicker at all, do you expect any quarterback to go to the playoffs? Seriously I mean come on I know you hate the guy’s guts but you have to be realistic really even you have to know that.

  75. Youngbucs Says:

And if you have no QB at all I fixed it for you😭

  76. Youngbucs Says:

    😭😭😭😭😭😭

  77. Big_Buc$ Says:

@Youngbucs if you are saying he didn’t have any weapons then why are you saying Julian Edelman played at high level with 100 catches for 1100 yards but yet the media claims Brady had no weapons? You seem to have overlooked the 8-0 start but finished 12-4 with two loses to KC and Baltimore. What was the excuse for Brady in those games? I remember the better team won. Not Brady. Its not like we asking him to come win the game on every pass. All i’m saying is that Bill want him gone or he really started to fall off. Quit looking at his past victories and look at 2019 is all I’m saying. There is no what if you know good and well he wanted AB to stay but he was a head case but Bucs fan were calling for him to come to Tampa with Brady.

  78. Big_Buc$ Says:

Oh yeah one more thing you want to downplay the run game tell me where New England was in rushing and were Tampa was? How many times did we see 3rd and 1 become 4th and 3 in Tampa? I bet New England didn’t suffer like that as much as Tampa?

  79. Youngbucs Says:

What are you talk bout I said he only top 100yds 3x last year shut up

  80. Youngbucs Says:

Ok NE rush for about 200 more yds than the Bucs what you saying? And just for extra credit KC rushed for about 50 more what you really saying??

  81. ©MadMax Says:

@ndog, you’re always calling people backstabbing, especially BA….YOU DO REALIZE THAT YOU’RE A GDDMN BACKSTABBING FAN RIGHT?

Fkn get lost you lousy as$ troll!!!!

  82. westernbuc Says:

Brady didn’t “miss” throws, he gave up on plays too quickly. I doubt he’ll have that problem here

  83. Bradybru Says:

so we got some NE fans and converted them cause they loooooovvvve Brady. Can we say anything about schizoid ATM Ndog lover. Good ridden glad you are on another team, maybe we can squash you and get some points.

  84. Bradybru Says:

You don’t have to buy it, no one listens to you anyway Jones.

  85. Buc4evr Says:

Yeah I saw that segment on TV yesterday and it’s clear that our opponents in the NFC are in denial. Brady is on a mission to win without Belichek and prove that he is the greatest ever. I expect him to demand a level of excellence from the players that Jameis couldn’t, even if his skill set has diminished over the years. This will be a vastly different and better team this season. Go Bucs!!

  86. Oneilbucs Says:

Adrnagy that’s my hold point but this fanbase rather to eat the scrap off other teams table instead of holding this organization accountable for not building our own team and players .

  87. ©MadMax Says:

Yeah Oneil, we’re not building a darned thing….nvm our D and wideouts we developed…..all scraps all slag….smdh…more Low IQ BS!

JW could no longer be developed, neither could McCoy, Vh3, Spence.

You know, when you’re welding a masterpiece, slag develops and you have to cut it and grind it out…..we’re almost there! But the low info jock strap hangers dont get it and never will…just like the losers they idolize.

1.1 will do, said Jayboo, sheehehehehehe, stupid!

  88. Buczilla Says:

If we can sign a starting caliber running back and the team stays relatively healthy, we’ll be in the playoffs.

  89. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Test

  90. TOM Says:

I think BA will adapt to Brady’s style just fine. Thats another reason I wouldn’t mind seeing Edelman in the mix. Brady, Gronk & Edelman = trifecta

  91. PuertoRicanBucFan Says:

This is also the same clown that said Winston was a $100 million QB this season. He is NEVER right about anything how is even on the NFL Network?
