Three Scoops In One

April 25th, 2020

Bucs safety Antoine Winfield.

Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht hates comparing college players to pro studs largely because the college player hasn’t yet played grown-arse men.

But if you like a safety like Budda Baker or Honey Badger who can play multiple positions, then new Bucs safety Antoine Winfield is your kind of player.

He’s basically three players in one, Licht said.

“It is one of the things that we really loved about Antoine,” Licht said.

“We feel he has the ability to play free and strong. We play interchangeable in our scheme. He’s s dropped down to nickel [corner] and done a really nice job there too. So you have a safety who can do all of those things, it raises his value.”

The way Licht described Winfield, it almost sounds like the All-American safety who led the Outback Bowl-winning Gophers in forced fumbles and tackles is a Big Ten version of Isaiah Simmons.

Two points about the video below. In the second play, Winfield has a long punt return for a touchdown. Notice the wicked stiff-arm he gave a defender, just throwing the dude to the ground.

In the third play playing what appears to be Fresno State, Winfield makes an incredibly sick recovery on a halfback option for an acrobatic interception in the back of the end zone.

On the fourth play, Winfield looks like Ed Reed playing center field for a game-ending pick.

Friends, this guy is a baller.

Welcome to the Bucs, Mr. Winfield, Jr.!

  2. Jason Says:

The #1 thing you can do to have success in the NFL is have a father who played in the NFL.

  3. '79 Defense Says:

Listening to a woman announcing a football game is so weird.

I 100% believe he is the best back in the draft. I don’t want a 4.7 McKinney or Delpit who can’t tackle. How can you play safety and the knock on you be that you’re a liability? That’s the opposite of a safety in my book.

  5. Bird Says:

    Thanks joes

It almost sounds like american safety
But you dont give nicknames until deserved
    😆

    Forget brady nickname
I mean wow. I love it

    That pitt game was glorious

I wanted McKinney or Winfield Jr. with the pick. McKinney was gone, but thankfully the Browns passed on Winfield. He fell perfectly to us…very happy with the first two Bucs picks this year.

I thought they’d take Dobbins too and then it was Winfield and I was stoked. He has a knack for knowing where the ball is and as sure handed as the best receivers. This was the missing piece to a top ranked defense. My son said the Bucs look like a fantasy team now. I hope he’s right.

Love this pick all bucs fans do

  9. AwShbucs Says:

I wasnt crazy about picking him over Epenesa. But Winfield is unquestionably a dynamic playmaker in the secondary. So this was a great pick.

The Rb selection sucked butts though.

  10. PragueBucsFan Says:

Hopefully this is the final piece of a great young secondary. MJ Stewart you’re on notice.

  11. ncbucsfan Says:

MJ Stewart is toast my friend!

  12. ModHairKen Says:

Where Winfield will really help is in the locker room. He is a big personality and his enthusiasm will be infectious. Team Captain in college. Dad played 14 years. Instant leader.

As for Vaughn, the guy is a 1,000 yard back year one. He ran behind a wet paper towel offensive line at Vandy.

    Two starters. Two quality guys.

  13. Ghost of Darrell Henderson Says:

Yea, who needs a 1500 yard dominant RB that chews clock and scores long touchdowns that break the back of your opponents.

When you can’t convert on a 1st down in the 4 minute drill, don’t worry 3 scoops will cover 6’3″ Mike Thomas from the shoulders down just like a blanket. A short blanket or maybe a short sheet.

Drew Brees and Sean Payton will never figure out “Short Sheet’s” glaring weakness..

I LOVE the pick!!! WE def needed Safety, even BA said it back in December!

Welcome to the Family Antoine!!!! Glad to have you 🙂

  15. 407Buc Says:

    Playmaker. Like the Honeybadger.

  16. Rashad Says:

    Joe,

With the addition of Winfield I can see added pressure on CB’s cause Bowles will want to get exotic with his blitzes. Dude has range when play at FS.

  17. Reginald B Bush Says:

I like the pick, But how many picks were wasted on db’s in Lichts tenure?

  18. JGhotier Says:

The Neapolitan Safety – Antoine Winfield Jr.

  19. Max Vasher Says:

Phenomenal pick! Thanks for including the video! Winfield looks f’ing amazing. We can get a running back anywhere – I mean, who doesn’t want to play for us now?!?! When talent like this is on the board – you go get it! Welcome to Tampa Winfield!

  20. FactTeller Says:

I see a mix of Earl Thomas/Honey Badger this is the safety we needed.

So ready for the season to start!!

  21. Pete Mitchell Says:

I’m excited to see what Winfield and Whitehead can do as our safeties in Todd Bowles defense, along with Edwards. Plus it’s great to not have to count on Evans, but if he can get healthy I would love to see what he can do in Todd Bowles defensive scheme.

The running back has me scratching my head a little bit, but shoot it’s the third round….

Wirfs is a freak. I liked his comment about mauling people (I think Carl Nicks said something very similar in his introductory press conference), that seems like a great mindset for an offensive lineman to have.

    Go BUCS!

  22. Allbuccedup Says:

If Winfield can stay healthy he will be a great one. I guess we want be trading Howard to the Patriots. They have already drafted 2 haha. Nobody wants Howard.

  23. stpetebucsfan Says:

MJ Stewart is not gone yet. He’s morphing into a special teams superstar. If he keeps getting better he’ll always have a spot on the team.

  24. unbelievable Says:

    Video doesn’t work…

  25. Buczilla Says:

Hopefully he’ll be versatile enough to be a legit starting running back. 😜
