“There Haven’t Been Many Conversations”

April 19th, 2020

About seven weeks ago, Bucco Bruce Arians made it very clear that he would like to extend Chris Godwin’s contract as soon as possible.

Godwin has one season left on his 4-year, $3.2 million rookie deal.

So Joe asked Godwin last week about the Bucs working on extending his contract. “There haven’t been many conversations thus far,” he replied.

Amari Cooper is now earning $20 million annually. Brandin Cooks is banking $16 million per year, which is about what Mike Evans will pocket this season.

If Godwin has another year like he did last season, then he’s certainly in the same league as Cooper and Cooks, and perhaps better.

Joe brings this up today because of chatter that the Bucs might look to make a deal for All-Pro Jets safety Jamal Adams, who was a very loud defender of Todd Bowles when the New York media was calling out Bowles’ awful defense in New York.

Adams, just 24 years old, is barking about wanting his own new contract.

The Bucs simply can’t trade for Adams and give him a new deal while leaving Godwin hanging. That would just be wrong and would go over poorly in the locker room. Meanwhile, Lavonte David is in the final year of his contract.

Joe hopes the Bucs strike an extension with Godwin sooner rather than later. They’ll save money and end their risk of losing Godwin.

Imagine if the Bucs don’t extend Godwin and Tom Brady looks like a 43-year-old quarterback this season.

You think Godwin’s will want to return to Tampa to play with an ancient QB and for a 69-year-old head coach who asks him to block in the trenches, when he could be the No. 1 receiver somewhere else?

I don’t see the bucs keeping both ME13 and CG

    ………..too much money I think

  2. James Says:

Awww he only make few mil to play football aww I feel bad for him

  3. Destinjohnny Says:

When u can’t draft well these are the problems

  4. Bobby M. Says:

We have the room to extend Godwin, Adams and David. We got Brady for a relative same value as tagging Winston. Suh came in a tad cheaper….the RT position will likely be the same or less the Dotson. They can rework a deal or two….I think I prefer Adams in that secondary with Bowles as DC. That fixes that side of the ball. You then have an entire draft to get linemen and a RB…..assuming we don’t trade for the Jaguar back.

  5. BuucccNASTY Says:

How is not drafting good the problem when your referring to two AllPro WRs that we drafted? lol idiot

  6. Tampabuscsbro Says:

    >You think Godwin’s will want to return to Tampa to play with an ancient QB

He probably likes it a WHOLE lot better then Winston and his on field antics and blowing games.

  7. Danny C Says:

There’s no way we can keep both of those guys. Way too much money in the receiver group.

  8. lambchop Says:

There is no way they let either Mike Evans or Chris Godwin walk. The deal will get done at the expense of some other players who carry a hefty salary (Jensen, D. Smith, Brate for example). This deal will get done in the offseason. I don’t see how there’s room to do it at this point given that they have to sign rookies and FAs.

Jamal Adams is not coming to Tampa, can we let go of that pipe dream? The Jets want a ransom to trade him. This will be the EXACT scenario as Honey Badger last year – would have been a Buc if we had the money. Jamal wants to get paid. We don’t have the cash. Simple really.

  9. Realbucsfan Says:

We need to pay the man. Godwin did his part and he didn’t try to change his rookie deal midseaon he deserves to get paid. If you don’t like how much people get paid to play football then don’t watch it. But the Bucs are must watch football. Brady will help drive views to a team that was already on the come up. Even if Brady sucks well get prime time games more often. Winston is getting lots of attention right now. I bet Godwin ends up with Winston in the future. You don’t get 2 1,000 yard wds with luck. Brady has to make sure we keep him

  10. JimmyJack Says:

It does make sense that you wait on Chris til after the draft and after the next wave of free agent signings. At that point you will have a better understanding of CAP space.

I think there is a good chance we extend both LVD and Shaq Barrett. We can easily push some of that money around to free up space to extend Chris now.

  11. PSL Bob Says:

Oh no!!!!! I’ve done it again. I ordered a Godwin jersey yesterday. The only other time I’ve thrown in big bucks for Bucs paraphernalia was for a Josh Freeman jersey, and we know how that worked out.

  12. scot pederson Says:

I agree with Tampabuscsbro that Godwin likes his chances better now than with Winston blowing games. For those who still think JW needed another year, here is what Peyton M. told Joe Burrow. “Jim Mora never took me out,” Manning said. “I learned some things in the fourth quarter of those blowouts about what it took to be an NFL quarterback and the next year we went from 3-13 to 13-3.

So yes, Manning had 1 really bad rookie season but he turned it around in just 1 season so Evans, Godwin and the other weapons on this team quietly know that JW was just not getting better based on the Turnovers never improving after what 3 coaches.

  13. Stanglassman Says:

No one is even considering the 1st round picks the Jets would require for compensation. Another Bucs site was suggesting this year’s 1st and 2nd plus O.J. or first round picks in ‘20 and ‘21. All this so you can pay him 15-17 million per year. That’s just too much draft capital and cap hit however you slice it. Great player but hard pass in these circumstances.

  14. Stanglassman Says:

If P. Manning turned it all around in one year why did he have more interceptions after 5 seasons than Jameis? Maybe P. Manning just played for a better team. Chris and Mike loved playing with Jameis, that’s a fact they stated in public often. I’m sure they’re excited to play with Brady too even if it’s in the tail end of his career. All this projecting opinions on what Chris or Mike think is only that just your opinion.

  15. Not a blind bucs fan Says:

Just because you say something doesn’t make it true.check your sheet!Jw had better numbers than peyton and without a thousand yard rusher .peyton had edgerin James .Now we need a running game to help Brady, didn’t have one last year.

  16. Phil Says:

I was thinking of getting one of the new Bucs jersey in Pewter. The only thing stopping me is if I did buy I would want to get number 14 but I’m afraid that the Bucs might not be able to resign him. If the Bucs could sign him to extension before the season started that would be great.

  17. Pewter Power Says:

Yes he would want to return why create drama and Godwin mindset is no different the Evans.he had one great year not 3 and apparently people forgot that. I’m sure they are more worried about winning a Super Bowl than extending someone early based off one year. Fan approach is much different than a business approach. They need the cap space, why assume he would want to leave the scheme that he became a pro bowler in for sake of ego. Duh yea he would want to return. Why does it have to be sign early or risk losing? So petty

  18. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

Godwin may like his chances to win more with Brady but he knows his numbers are dropping. Brady isn’t throwin for 4500 much less 5K. (I’ll take it though because he will have less than half of the INTs.)

  19. WestChap Says:

Patience, Mr. Godwin. After the draft settles and we see what, if any, next tier FAs we need you will definitely get paid.

  20. Rod Munch Says:

Chill out people. Godwin will get done and the money will be created most likely by dumping Smith next year. I like Smith, I think he’s perfectly fine as a LT, but if the Bucs had any intelligence at all, in a deep OT class, they’d take two OT’s. One for RT this year, and one for LT next year – that way if either guy turns out to be a bust you could still get someone next year.

Plus the Bucs HAVE to get a 3rd WR, not only is this a must due to having zero depth at WR, it also gives a little wiggle room when negotiating. Who knows, if you got someone, like say Michael Pittman in the 2nd, a guy who looks completely pro-ready, and he steps in from day 1 and performs near the same level as Godwin, that should reduce Godwin’s stats and thus reduce is salary demands. Yes, I know, but that’s how the NFL works, kiddos.

As for David, they should redo his deal and extend it as a way to free up cap space now and kick the ball down the road a few seasons. You don’t sign Brady to worry about “cap hell” in 3 years, you sign Brady to win right now, and the team should go all in on getting creative as possible to make sure they do everything to win right now, the future be damned.

  21. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Munch, I liked a lot of your post until you said, “the future be damned.” The great franchises in the NFL are there year after year. Look no further than the Patriots. Granted, it’s a weak division, but they’ve been literally on top of it for two decades. Yeah, I wanna win now, but I don’t want to just completely abandon the next decade.

  22. bucshot Says:

After the draft things will become much clearer. Win Now is an understatement……..

  23. Rod Munch Says:

Alvin – You don’t throw away your 26-year old NFL leading passer QB if you’re not saying the future be damned.

I am and was for the signing of Brady, but it means you’re full in right now, that’s the entire point. Trading away future 1sts, getting yourself in ‘cap hell’ three years down the road, everything should be on the table to win right now. The reason I’m for this is because this market desperately needs a huge shot in the arm, and this has done that. So now you support it by doing everything to win right now — not 3 years from now. Deal with 3 years from now in 3 years.

Also if the market is as weak as it seems for Winston, the team could bridge the now and the present by getting Winston back on a lowball backup deal. Now that is how you plan for the future, you get Brady now, and Winston sits on the bench for a year or two and learns from the GOAT. Plus, as Winston has said, you can’t get mad at losing your job to the greatest ever. If they pulled that off, then even if Brady is suddenly a 43-year old QB, you still have your stud young QB ready to come in off the bench.

  24. Gofortheface30 Says:

James, don’t be a jealous commie. Only a dem would complain about another mans money. Supply and demand, everyone deserves fair market value for their work

  25. Pewter Power Says:

Sure you throw away a passing leader especially if you know you can do better now and in the future. If yards mattered more than wins he would already have been signed to a massive contract. One year topping 5k yards doesn’t erase a career of double digit interceptions and losing.

  26. Buczilla Says:

The Cowboys giving Amari Cooper the largest contract ever for a wide receiver is laughable. Good for Amari, but he took the Cowboys to the cleaners and they were fools to pay him that much. Making a good, not great receiver the highest paid at his position when he’s not even in the top ten will make it harder for us to sign Godwin to a reasonable deal. I’m a homer for sure, but there is no way in hell that Amari is better than Godwin.

  27. scot pederson Says:

yes manning threw a lot of picks in years 1-5, but he didnt throw near the amount of Pick 6 throws as Jameis and the league rules were not very pass happy in 98-2002 as compared to today. Manning also had 3 winning seasons in his first 5 years whereas Jaymiss has 1.

  28. George Rauh Says:

Extend Godwin now, he won’t get any cheaper. A couple of years ago we Had ME13 at 17 million and Djackson at 12.5 million, Brate at 6 million and OJ at 3 million. That is almost 40 million on those spots,

  29. SOEbuc Says:

I continue my stand. Kinlaw at #14 or trade back for Delpit.

    Build through the draft.

    GO BUCS!!!

  30. SOEbuc Says:

I’m gonna have to put off getting a new jersey for my bday next week because all they’re selling is Brady, Godwin, and White. Sucks. I want my red LVD. Even if he were to leave he’s been my favorite player on the Bucs for a long time. Amazing player amongst so many terrible defense’s.

  31. Proudbucsfan Says:

Happy bday next week @SOEbuc I also agree that we will go D-line next week in the draft so we will be covered next year when Suh leaves and that rookie deal for the 14th pick will help us resign Godwin.

  32. TampaBay AllDay Says:

    Bruce is 67 btw

  33. THETRUTH Says:

Here we go let’s make something out of nothing to create panic !!!

Cap goes up every year! Smith contract doesn’t go against cap there is 15 million. And that doesn’t include other free money we will have or create.
Suh if doesn’t return will free up 8 mill. Rework Centers contract , CG is not an issue to be concerned about and we can Evans as well.

Too much reading between the lines to find a negative angle on every word a player or coach says.

  34. Joe Says:

    Bruce is 67 btw

Will be 68 when season rolls around.

  35. TampaBay AllDay Says:

    Yeah but thats not 69
