“That Just Has To Happen”

April 1st, 2020

“Tell us where to go, Tommy.”

Clyde Christensen has coached Peyton Manning, Andrew Luck, and the emerging QB star of 2019, Ryan Tannehill, as well as last year’s leading NFL passer, unemployed America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston.

The Bucs’ QB coach now has Tom Brady and is eager to see him unite the offense with coaches isolated because of the damn coronavirus.

Joe will share a recent interview with Christensen on the next Ira Kaufman Podcast, but here’s a nugget to chew on for now.

Christensen said these challenges require a coach-like quarterback to succeed with a new team, in addition to a more-focused approach on transition.

“I think the keys are to teach [Brady] the things that are really important and not just waste a bunch of time on, you know, a lot of people just teach the whole playbook,” Christensen said of incorporating Brady to the Bucs. “And everyone has 30 percent of the playbook that never comes up. So I’ve always felt like, ‘Let’s teach him the things that are important. Let’s team him the things he’s going to need to know when he gets into training camp.’

“But I think the other thing is that’s where leadership is such a big thing and he’ll do a good job, that these quarterbacks have to get those receivers off and work on their own. And when you have a Tom Brady or a Peyton Manning or a Drew Brees, or those guys who can assemble or run a practice as well as a coach, that gives you a huge advantage in these times.

“If you have a guy who’s probably passive or just wants to go hunt in Alaska or something, then they’re not going to get their throws in. So I think you can tell quickly with Tom that’s not going to happen with us and he’s going to get those guys assembled and throwing and learning and teaching each other. And I think that’s the two big things; let’s teach him the important things and then also, we got to get them together. He’s got to get his throws with [Mike] Evans and [Chris] Godwin and O.J. [Howard] and all our guys. You know, that just has to happen.”

Joe is eager to see how and where Brady assembles his offense in the face of what could be a shut down One Buc Palace for a chunk of the spring.

Might he rent space at IMG in Bradenton, or make a deal with a vacant spring training stadium? Will the key pass catchers find their way to his Montana ranch?

It’s interesting to hear Christensen talk of paring down the playbook for Brady. Did the Bucs do that last year with Jameis?

Jameis isn’t a Buc anymore and he won’t be back. I think the conversation should stay with managing Brady and his transitioning into the Bucs offense and changing the culture versus what and how did Jameis fail.

  2. Carl Nicks' big toe Says:

This is going to really show what the future holds for OJ. If he can’t get on board with Brady, he’s really going to start wearing the “bust” label. For all his potential, if he can’t put it together now, it’s hard to see where he will. I’ll take hard work and determination over potential every time.

  3. DBS Says:

Our resident expert would know everything they did. He knows what goes on in their minds and the players. How would we know what they did and did not do? Jameis is no longer here. It is up to the coaches to do what they feel needs to be done.

  4. LaMarcus Says:

But but but…. Brady is included in golf tournament with Tiger, Phil and Peyton Manning

I swear these coaches on the Koetter level

  5. geno711 Says:

Great coaches we have here now. Greatest quarterback ever here now.
I am not worried about the transition. If for some reason they fail than you all can do an I told you so.

  6. Destinjohnny Says:

One thing jameis did have was a work ethic

  9. Robert Says:

I frickin love having the goat mr Tom Brady as qb

  10. Tampabuscsbro Says:

Speaking of Benching Winston his play was so bad at times he should have been benched last year. The Winston fans will never admit this but there were times he was playing so poorly we would have been better with the third string QB.

It’s sort of interesting that the name of Jameis was not mentioned one time in that entire article… but the very first comment (yours)… that is the very first word. —— Not meaning to pick at you. It’s just an observation.

  12. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

Correction, it was mentioned once at the very end.

  13. Steven007 Says:

Thank goodness there was conjecture about how they might have dealt with Jameis last year. Wouldn’t want to miss an opportunity to name drop your obsession.

  14. JimmyJack Says:

Right now Brady is diligently studying his book and film.

Just for laughed but this time last year Winston was getting a golf ball wacked off of his head. Hahahaha

What the heck Demon..Jameis was the last word in the article. Your down article perception seems worse than Jameis’s after snap defensive adjustment perception.

  32. Bird Says:

    Oh and go noles !
    😂

  33. Kansas95Buc Says:

Ok so from what I’m reading, Brady will basically call his own plays or have the playbook adjusted for his style, ok cool. A logical person has to ask, why wasn’t adjusting the playbook an option last year?

    • Not call his own plays, unless he’s making adjustments, which we will probably see a lot of

    • The did less adjusting because Arians was trying to get the most out of pushing Winston. He needed to know what Winston could bring to the team. I think part of it was trying to improve Winston’s deep ball…which they did.

  39. Christopher Schiefen Says:

I love how people are beginning to rebel against the constant Jameis references. Especially now that the real “America’s Quarterback” is a actually on the team.

  40. JimmyJack Says:

Forget adjusting the playbook to suit Winston.

If you go back and look at some of the mistakes it had nothing to do with adjusting.

Twice he got picked on screen plays!!! Bro, if your QB can’t run a freaking screen play that’s a big deal. There’s nothing an adjustment can do………And both of those were at pivitol times. One ended a potential game winning drive. The other killed our shot at taking back momentum when we finally started moving the ball in London.

I’m sorry you can’t cry adjustments when your QB has problems running the simpliest of play designs.

  41. Architek Says:

    Tampa Bay Demon
No offense taken, that’s definitely a fair observation! I’m just tired of the context being driven about how Bucs directly or indirectly causes the failure.

We all know the past 5 years and there’s nothing that’s going to change what HAS happened.

This is a one in a lifetime opportunity – why not focus on the future?

  42. Architek Says:

  45. MadMax Says:

Btw, just looking at some mocks and draft projections. Clyde going the 2nd, Claypool going in the 3rd….i saw where Thomas makes it to us at 14…that would be awesome.

If Claypool lasts until the 3rd, and then we can move back into the 3rd for a FS (Dugger or Davis), thatll be a great draft!

    OT Thomas
    RB Clyde
    WR Claypool
    FS Dugger/Davis

…..oh yeah! I’ll take that all day!

  46. Natron Says:

    Where’s tmaxcon ?

  47. stpetebucsfan Says:

    BigHog

You are aware that EVERY NFL QB is just ONE blind side sack from losing a season and maybe a career right?

And in fact it’s not just a blind side sack…the arguably greatest QB in the game at the moment…Patrick Mahomes had his knee cap blown out in a simple QB sneak.

  48. JimmyJack Says:

MadMax what’s your thoughts on the first round choice if we don’t have a tackle we like avialable? Just curious.

Also think it’s worth noting that we have said in the past two years(when we had top 10 picks) that there was some Big3 players we hoped to get…….and if both years the teams that actually made them picks didn’t agree.

Other players were drafted ahead of this consesus “Big Three” touted by fans. So I think it’s worthy to remember that and related to this season where all these mockers are saying it a “Big Four” for OTs…….Maybe they are right and the Bucs have exactually those four rated just like that. But we don’t know and the Bucs draft board could look a lot different then what these people claim(happens in several areas every year)……..Just saying to keep that in mind if the Bucs do something different then what some podcasters out there says they should do. Fans tend to overreact if their team doesn’t take who Mel Kiper says is a can’t miss.

  49. Soberinsac Says:

Who is the winston guy I keep hearing about on this site. I dont see J. Winston on the current roster at all. Im a die hard Bucs fan not a sie hard player fan. Once they are gone and still playing they are opponents. Winston is and will never be beloved like Sapp, Brooks, Lynch, Barber, Nickerson, Rice, my guy B. Culpepper, Alstott, hell even Dunn, Abraham, Kelly, Quarles, Singleton on and on… history will remember Winston as a loser period. Remember stats are for losers.

  50. MadMax Says:

@Jimmy, if a tackle isnt available, big Brown is gone, Simmons gone….i say trade back….grab an OT later. 2nd, 3rd and 4th rounds are where we can really give this team an infusion of talent, and we have luck at those rounds (usually).

Picking up another DT would be nice….ive been watching Baylor’s James Lynch who looks like a solid 4th round prospect, still watching some research on him, looks solid though.

If our choice at OT is gone at 14, just trade back…possibly trade out of the first….im good with that.

  51. SB Says:

Brady doesn’t actually have a “Ranch” up here Joe.
He lives in the exclusive “Yellowstone Club” in Big Sky. Cheapest house in the neighborhood is around 3 Mil. It is only on a tad bit over an Acre and a half.
I have done a good bit of work in the club over the last 5 years or so.

  55. MadMax Says:

Just checked out pics of that place SB…..some beautiful homes there. A qtr mill just to join that club, and yeah, homes in the 3 to 25 mill range.

  56. SB Says:

    Yeah Max
It is a quarter mil just to join the private ski club.
That is after you buy your house. It is pretty sweet up there but a bunch of rich Aholes , I almost don’t like working there because of it.

  57. MtBucsfan Says:

He does not have a ranch here. He has a very upscale house in a rich man sub division.

  58. WestChap Says:

Joe should take Ivan’s idea… Jameis Grief Tour: Day XX. All things Jameis could go into that daily feature and we wouldn’t need any more throw away lines about Jameis in every other story. What do you think?

  59. BigHog Says:

SB / Child please, but you responded to my post ….my job well done!

  60. Adrnagy Says:

I see the Brady bunch is out, and Ivan the insider is jealous?

  61. RODNEY ALLEN Says:

Joe what do u think the chances r of Winston being our back up if nobody will give him a starter position n not many offer a backup position. Being behind someone like Brady is a great place to be for a QB that has some issues to work out 💯🤷🏻‍♂️
