Bucs Dumped Both Their Fourth-Round Picks

April 23rd, 2020

Bucs GM Jason Licht.

A few days ago the Bucs had two fourth-round draft picks.

Now they have none.

To move up one spot from No. 14 to No. 13, the Bucs traded their 117 overall draft pick to the 49ers, a mid-fourth-rounder.

Man, that’s a steep price to move up one spot. “We didn’t want to risk it,” general manager Jason Licht said.

Their late fourth-round pick was dealt to acquire Rob Gronkowski.

Joe’s not about to cry about fourth-round picks; this just puts more pressure on the Bucs to get it right in Rounds 2 and 3, and they’re much lower on ammunition to trade up.

Hey, the Bucs obviously waned new first-round right tackle, manbeast Tristan Wirfs, in a bad way. They made their move and Joe has to respect that — even if they didn’t have to.

    WHY?

  2. Rossta 61 Says:

They need to try to trade OJ Howard for a fourth round to somebody

  3. Plex Says:

Decent pick, I say they shoulda stayed at 14 and took kinlaw if wirfs wasnt there.

  4. Sarasota Garey Says:

They turned them into 2 studs on offense

    Let’s Go

  6. Rayjay1122 Says:

Dolphins would have taken Wirfs in trade. We offered more obviously graded him over Jackson

    Bargains for two #4’s.

    JOE

Come on Joe Other teams needed an O lineman. they would have given more then we did possibly.

For some reason Wirfs fell to us and we had to get our man. for as much as I give Jason crap this was the right move.

I have no idea why you think making sure we got wirfs and getting gronk makes you upset. THere’s nothing written here that Joe is upset. –Joe

  9. Tom S. Says:

John Lunch has now talked Ryan Pace and Jason Licht into trading up one spot in two of his three Drafts as a GM. It’s unreal. We get to be reminded that we have the Ryan Pace of the NFC South as our GM and John Lunch gets to pick up extra draft selections for the NFC Champion 49ers.

  10. ©MadMax Says:

All worth it…..Beautiful trades Mr. Licht!!!!

  11. Gainesville Chris Says:

I wonder is the Niners pulled one over on us like they did the Bears a few years back… either way solid pick I think.

  12. geno711 Says:

Dolphins at 18 took a much worse tackle and had enough draft capital to easily move up to 13 and beat us to Tristen Wirfs.

  13. ElioT Says:

Obviously the Brady & Gronk moves in combo with Arians, Lichtmyb*lls and all the other vets on one year deals…

THIS TEAM IS IN WIN-NOW MODE.

They’d have to tear down everything (again) and start over regardless so just go for it.

“Not about to cry” – Can’t wait for the next few months of articles.

  14. Tampabuscsbro Says:

Also wasn’t this the Joe saying how worthless bucs 4th round picks were two days ago?
You guys are reading into this Joe complaining about the trade up. That’s not what’s written here. –Joe

  15. WestChap Says:

Move to get Wirfs was pricey but if he dominates at RT in both passing and run blocking price will soon be forgotten.

  16. lambchop Says:

Miami selected an OT, I’m dang sure they were the team talking to the 49ers offering to trade up ahead of us for Wirfs.

    Agree.

  18. ©MadMax Says:

And we can always move back into the 4th. Both 7th’s and maybe a late one from next year’s draft….or OJ gets traded and we have two 3rd’s….one can dream.

  19. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    DUMPED?…….we got Wirfs…..(Dolphins wanted him)……….and Gronk….

    I hardly call that dumping…

Agree. Miami had 14 picks in this draft.

  21. Destinjohnny Says:

Would have told them to take the dolphin deal
    They wouldn’t have

  22. ElioT Says:

The draft is more of a crap shoot than it ever has been… Who gives a crap about a 4th Round pick when you can get a guy you’re sold on?

Luke Stocker was selected in the fourth round, 104th overall by the Rockstar.

Kwon was taken in the 4th Rd and left in FA to do almost nothing for the 9ers for $13 million/year.

  23. Jonzey Says:

Great pick he is a beast now we need a running back

  24. Rich Says:

John Lynch should be our GM…he totally fleeced Bud Light out of a 4th….

  25. Tampabuscsbro Says:

    I am just saying Joe

I couldn’t be more ecstatic about what we did with those 4th round picks.

  26. Dapostman Says:

I guess we could have drafted another Ryan Smith and missed out on Wirfs.

    These Buc fans are morons.

Oh wait. We can draft another Ryan Smith with the 7th rounder we got back.

  27. Jean Lafitte Says:

    good grief

  28. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

If we can get CEH in the 2nd then I’ll be stoked

  29. David Says:

My guess is they had some damn good Intel that someone was trying to trade up for WIRFS.
Two 4’s for a healthy Gronk and a beast of a tackle?
    Sounds good to me.

    Now get that running back

  30. ElioT Says:

    Tampabuscsbro
    Nailed it!

  31. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

We’ll find out the WHYs later. No sense whining over it. We got an elite player. Rejoice!

I didn’t have him on my wishlist because I didn’t think we had a chance to get him. I’m very pleased I was wrong!

  32. Anonymous Says:

Dolphins just drafted a tackle. They definitely wanted Wirfs

  33. 541BucsFan Says:

The irony in this article is Joe has an article a few links down chastising fans for complaining about giving away a 4th for Gronkowski because 4th Round picks rarely materialize.

We just got one of the top OT in the draft. People would be doing cartwheels if we traded our 1st and a 4th and drafted Wirfs at 8.

  34. ElioT Says:

One was a comp pick we got for letting go of Kwon who is drastically overpaid in SanFran and never contributed to a winning culture. – No hating on Kwon but he is NOT worth $13 mill

  35. Crockett69 Says:

They were worried Miami was going to move up to snag Wirfs before them. John tipped them off due to his strong relationship with the Glazers plus Lynch Riggs Arians.

  36. Colin in Canada Says:

They also got a 7th rounder back from San Fran. So we had no 7th round picks a few days ago and now we have two.

    Glass half full.

Also i think the reason the comments assume you don’t approve of the trade is because of the word “Dumped”.

Just need to make those 7th rounders count. Maybe a kick returner or a Fullback for Brady.

  37. Rich Says:

John Lynch should be our GM…..Bud Light got fleeced again! I’d love to play poker against Bud Licht….he has no poise or balls

  38. shooters Says:

Gronk & Wirfs for 2 4ths and 1st is a steal keep in mind we have done nothing with these picks usually. all in !!!!!!!!!!!!

    Don’t forget the 2 7ths we picked up……you never know…..

  44. JimmyJack Says:

We traded one 4th for a Hall of famer. The other nobody will ever remember it cost us a fourth if Wirfs is a good player.

Losing the fourth today only looks bad if Wirfs is a bust.

  45. Noles Says:

Shooter JL excels in rd4 but I agree you

  46. ElioT Says:

See y’all when football season starts (if it does).

I’m going to be busy clicking on all these amazing ads that occupy more screen than the content.

  47. AwShbucs Says:

Didnt we just go over the volatile nature of Bucs 4th rounders the other day? At first I was a bit perplexed but Miamis selection of Josh Jackson tells me they were trying to trade up to leap frog us.

So we spent both our 4th rounders to secure the best Tight end ever and a premiere prospect at Rt whose ultra athletic with tons of upside. That’s a win in my book.

Now with the selection of the best available Rb tomorrow our offense will be a force to be reckoned with more so than ever before. Not gonna lie tho I would have loved to see Jordan Love be our pick, but hey if we end up winning the Superbowl who really cares?

  48. BucNDaDDY Says:

Wasn’t about the 9ers, it was many teams knew theBucs where looking offensive line, so to avoid being jumped, we jumped one spot! Not really about building for the future it’s about now!

  49. David Says:

Moving on to round two, I just hope all the running backs keep falling!!

  50. AwShbucs Says:

    Austin Jackson I mean.

  51. The Coroner Says:

Trading a 4th to move up one spot for a team which was going to take IMO means they outbid Miami or there were too many cocktails

  52. SOEbuc Says:

No problem with him playing RG if he can. Marpet/Jensen/Whirfs. That’s like the our dline with Vea/Suh/JPP where you have to double up on someone. Jonathan Taylor up the middle.

  53. David Says:

I fully expect to hear OJ Howard traded over the next three days. Hopefully fourth rounder

  54. mike d king Says:

It makes perfect sense. Wirfs was the last of the big 4 OTs left. If the 9ers were open to trade down (they were) then I highly doubt the Bucs were the only one on the phone trying to score the last of the big 4 OTs. If we did not trade up, someone else would have.

  55. JGhotier Says:

“Dumped” for Gronk and to secure the OT we ALL fn wanted. Not what I would call “dumped”.

    That’s such an absurd statement.

Starting to think you’d somehow find a way to talk sh!t about a pretty sunset. SMH

  56. adam from ny Says:

    i like our line now…

    haeg (sid haig’s son) as a floater…

bring back dot and earl watson as the other floaters and we are pretty good…

yeah dotson can float a bit in an emergency…

draft another guy in the 5th or 6th…

see if you can re-visit the trent williams for howard deal

  57. Terry Walztoni Says:

There were a couple of other teams that were offering to trade up to get Tristan so they had to make the trade to get the guy they wanted. Awesome job Jason and Bruce!

  58. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

Very happy with the pick. However, I think Licht paid way too high of a price.

  59. 541BucsFan Says:

    Wirfs could have gone #4.

Here’s what one draft expert wrote about this pick …

A+. Wow. I can’t believe the Buccaneers stole Tristan Wirfs. The Giants were very close to taking him – Dave Gettleman had him ranked higher than Andrew Thomas, but the coaches disagreed – so getting Wirfs at No. 13 is almost grand larceny. This is the perfect pick for the Buccaneers, who needed a big upgrade at right tackle to protect their 43-year-old quarterback.

  60. Kevin Says:

No big deal …… Trade oj Howard now

  61. El_Buc941 Says:

Joe ABC said Tampa traded a 7th for moving up. Not a 4th.

  62. TOM Says:

The hell with getting a 4th for Howard, they should get at least a 3rd.

  63. Op Says:

We used our 4th round picks to get Rob Gronkowski and secure one of the top offensive tackles. I think that is a very good use for them.

  64. Buccanstopit Says:

I’ve watched past draft days the last few days, and one thing for sure, you don’t know who half the players are 5-10 years later. We got a cornerstone lineman and gave up a might be on the special teams player. There is a draft every year to get younger, cheaper players in the later rounds. Why do you think the NFL gave up on the 12 round drafts? Mainly a waste of time after 7 rounds, and some drafted get cut, and undrafted stick.

  65. Patrickbucs Says:

All good with pick, we have one of the best schools to draft lineman in college football. They don’t play the spread freaking offense either. He can play both sides and a freak. For a 4th? We have Capitol to trade, and not OJ either unless a top 2nd round. Still have hope for him once he gets with Brady and Gronk, he may see the light/Licht.

  66. permanent_moderation_doghouse Says:

I have a feeling they’ll maneuver to get back into the 4th round somehow.

  67. Mike Johnson Says:

    Licht got..Bambozzled.

  68. Patrickbucs Says:

Yeah MJ, was that you sitting next to Lynch with the inside scoop? So if we tased with Jax at 9 and gave up a 4th would you be ok? Just drafted the best possible tackle in the draft, stupid.. ok

  69. Defense Rules Says:

Many seem to be overthinking this … the Wirfs & Gronk acquisitions aren’t related. Licht gave up ONE 4th Rnd pick to move up 1 space and secure Wirfs, one of the Top-4 tackles in the draft. Bucs have no salary Cap left to speak of and NEEDED a Tackle. Other teams also NEEDED a Tackle, and surely would’ve paid that. Kudos to Jason for having the cajones to pull the trigger.

Gronk is a different matter. He cost us a 4th Rnd pick (to the Pats who Gronk was never gonna play for) AND $10 mil of salary Cap. That pretty much wipes out our salary Cap (for the time being), at a time when the Bucs still have other NEEDS. Bucs didn’t NEED a TE, and especially one who’s over-30, who’s been retired for over a year, and who was on the downhill slide before that because of injuries. We did it for the attention it’ll generate IMO (which it did). Rnd 4 picks can be valuable, especially on a team lacking depth. The cost to acquire Gronk was excessive IMO, BUT … I doubt anyone asked JL what he thought. Chances are mighty good IMO that he was told ‘Make it happen’.

  70. BucEmUp Says:

Brate is more expensive and cannot block but howard has a piss poor attitude. Someone needs to go
