Great For Business

February 19th, 2020

Team Glazer huddled before a game in 2019

Let’s play the Team Glazer home game for a few minutes and think about which quarterback situation is better for business.

Behind Door No. 1 is a talented, 26-year-old quarterback disliked by a hefty percentage of fans because of his historic turnover habits and his status as a sexual offender under the NFL conduct policy.

Behind Door No. 2 is the 42-year-old, greatest quarterback of all-time who is coming off a “down year” in which he threw 24 touchdowns and 8 interceptions without a stable of quality weapons.

So again, the game question is, ‘which quarterback situation is better for business?’

It’s an easy answer, especially if you draft a quarterback in the first round to learn and develop under Brady for a year or two.

Joe thinks Bucs fans collectively would be energized and ecstatic to see Tom Brady in a Bucs uniform. They’d love to see the team play at least four night games in 2020, and to see how Brady may — or may not — change the mentality of the entire roster.

So in the Team Glazer home game, the Bucs’ owners go all-in to sign Brady over the next four weeks.

Mike Florio, the ultimate NFL insider at ProFootballTalk.com, wrote last night about the pending significant market for Brady in free agency. And it got Joe thinking about Team Glazer, which presides over a 12-year playoff drought and an unhealthy Bucs malaise across the Bay area.

Signing Brady would be great for business. He’d sell tickets. He’d sell suites. He’d get people who already have purchased tickets to show up and buy overpriced beverages and food and other things available at the stadium. And his new No. 12 jersey (even if his next team has retired it, he’ll be wearing it) would instantly become the hottest-selling piece of NFL merchandise, perhaps ever.

Far more important, ultimately, is what happens on the field.

Brady and a highly-drafted rookie QB might be a better Bucs football combination than America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston. But it’s definitely an unknown.

..:… and a BIG payday for CG12 when he sells his #12!

  2. footballjunkie Says:

Wonder…where..this came from. 3rd column in a little of a week. “Malaise” too no less. S’pose should be checkin the mail for a 1099 at this point.

No retort is needed. It won’t matter.

Yup, all right here on…this..and those.

  3. Brandon Says:

He’d sell tickets right up until the team starts losing, opposing defenses see that he can’t throw the ball down the field in tight windows anymore, and the system, the line, and opposing defenses start to really beat him up to the point that he is battered, bruised, and ineffective. I like Tom Brady. He is the epitome of a winner… but this is not the place, the system, or the team for him.

  4. Evolvingbucsfan Says:

I don’t come to games because of the QB, i come in hopes of seeing my team win. Plain and simple.

  5. tmaxcon Says:

Brady is not coming to this small market irrelevant circus of a minor league franchise….. brady will either be a raider or patriot…. no way he even considers the least desirable location in the NFL…. he’d have to fly in his own chefs daily just eat halfway decent meals considering golden corral is best restaurant in Tampa…. you people are absolutely certifiable if you think brady would consider this historically horrendous franchise/market….

  6. ben Says:

Brady would finally make this team get most of the national attention and be all over prime time !!…

  7. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

Jameis is a sign that Status Woe will continue

Brady offers hope to a fanbase that is tired of losing and the qb keeping opponents in games

  8. Ndog Says:

Simply put if Brady comes here, which he is not, i will immediately cancel my automatic season ticket renewal. I will of course still go to all the games, like always, but if they think short term I think short term. And again let’s all be very clear if they give up on a chance for us to have a great QB, with tremendous potential, that stays with us from beginning to end (of his career) then there is only one thing that makes it worth it and that is winning the Superbowl this year. Nothing else will be a success, not a playoff birth, not making the Superbowl nothing else only winning it all THIS YEAR. If they can do that go ahead but I think we all know that’s a long shot. In fact I would say the odds of Jameis going to NE and winning the Superbowl is higher than Brady coming here and winning the Superbowl.

  9. Sport Says:

We would gain a massive amount of fans across the entire country and especially all the transplant fans in the Tampa Bay Area. They would energize and buy tickets if we had Brady.

Fans that don’t normally go, would now go. It would be an awesome addition in that way.

It would also provide the ultimate excuse to jettison JW without much flack from the fan base or national media.

    Go Bucs!

    In BA I Trust!

  10. tmaxcon Says:

Only way you people get brady in tampa is if geisel buys the worst franchise in nfl history other than that she will never allow her man to lower his standards…. he doesn’t have to

  11. Jeagan1999 Says:

Butts in the seats…that’s what this business is all about. When you win consistently, fans come to the stadium and spend money. When lose consistently, (especially by turning the ball over ad infinitum) fans stay away! Top QBs win and put butts in seats. Jameis Winston is not one of those. The glazers know this and I’ll wager the decision to move on has already been made. It may not be Brady, but it could be Rivers….with a young guy in the draft to begin developing.

  12. Sport Says:

So NDog, would rather not play in the playoffs or the SB just to say, ‘we kept a QB for his entire career’. Because the chances of no playoffs and SB far outweigh the opposite with JW and his ‘sheer’.

Don’t forget NDog, JW is the one who put himself in this situation. He deserves what he gets, no less, no more.

    In BA I Trust!

And the Bell column. And others. Pretty sad really.

Believe it JBF folks, every thread gets reviewed and reviewed by “staff” there.

    🙂

Like I said, no retort will matter.

  15. 813bucboi Says:

brady is only interested in winning a SB…..he’s not coming here to “help develop a rookie”…..

with that said, theres no doubt in my mind brady would elevate this team and have them believing from day1 they are a SB team…..every position group would would have their best season…..

remember nate solder, trent brown, malcolm butler and a list full of other players that raised their game under brady and havent been the same since….

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

You lost me at “Behind Door No. 1 is a talented”…

  17. tmaxcon Says:

    Jeagan1999

Butts in seats is chump change and meaningless compared to the league charity aka revenue sharing this minor league franchise benefits frim every year. If glazers gave a crap about butts seatscit would not be 18 years in between meaningful wins…. it takes a lot of effort to be this bad for this long

  18. Dapostman Says:

Funny how many guys are on the Brady wagon after he threw 2 pick 6’s in consecutive games to lose a BYE and then a playoff game.

    Ironic.

  19. Pewter power Says:

Winning is good for business something we can’t do because of Mr double digit turnover every year. My issue with the Glazers thinking that it means something that your relevant in the offseason and never during season. I’m sick of winsturnover but bring him back another year and draft someone. For some reason he thinks he should have the keys to the franchise at whatever price he wants and we shouldn’t be drafting anyone just in case he well in case he does what he usually does every year.

  20. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

Funny how many guys are on the Jameis wagon after he threw 7 pick 6’s in 16 games to lose a chance at a winning record.

    Ironic.

  22. El Buco Realisto Says:

The “real” fans do not agree with the Brady and draft a QB high!!!!!!!!!! We don’t want this regime making long term decisions like drafting a QB with a big arm that fits ole stale biscuit system when he is likely to leave or be run out the door after this season!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Would rather see a one year deal for jay-miss or a free-agent and then clean house after the disaster and have the next regime decide who their guy is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then we can get the “right” kind of QB that we all can get behind and root for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  23. SlowMojo727 Says:

You lost me at “Behind Door No. 1 is a talented”…..

  24. Adrnagy Says:

You right. He will sell tickets. But with no defense for how long.

  25. Iamabuc Says:

    Brady is not coming. Stop.

  26. SC Bucs Fan Says:

Brady is NOT going to tarnish his GOAT reputation by finishing his career losing in a creamsicle. Anyone who feel otherwise, including the admins, are welcome to their opinion however stupid it may be.

  27. Mister Negative Nancy Says:

Who is writing this article and what did you do with Joe?

  28. Iamabuc Says:

5000 yards is no joke. It’s not even luck, it’s not. There are not too many teams who have a Qb that can do that. Interceptions?…of course there are going to happen. We need Winston back with this high power offense. We have never had this type of Qb

He needs to stay. At least one more year. This will be year two in Arians offense. WE WILL BE BETTER THIS YEAR!. GET THAT THROUGH YOUR THICK SKULL!

  29. Youngbucs Says:

Ndog please u sound silly it would piss u off if TB came here and succeeded admit it

  30. Sleepy903 Says:

People forget that Brady had the luxury of going through the easiest division in football for most of his career. Neither of the teams in his division have had a franchise QB since early in his career. Playoffs were pretty much gifted to him. Not to take away from his greatness but playing in the NFC south is especially for the Bucs is much different that playing QB for NE in the AFC East.

Ive always felt the NFC was more competitive top to bottom than the AFC. The only division that was routinely competitive when they play against each other is the AFC North.

  31. Joe Says:

People forget that Brady had the luxury of going through the easiest division in football for most of his career.

    This is SO TRUE!

  32. 813bucboi Says:

only JW apologist will “cancel their automatic season ticket renewal” when their “favorite” team is doing everything possible to win…which includes getting the greatest QB to ever play the game…..

let’s all be very clear: PATS didnt advance because of their weapons….brady still has plenty of arm strength and mobility to maneuver in the pocket…..and he helps his o-line by being decisive and getting the ball out quick unlike our current QB…..

theres nothing that JW has done in 5years that leads most fans to believe he can get us to and win a SB within the next 5years….yard?…please….for every yard, i can give you turnovers…..for every “leadership moment” i can give you an immature moment…..

again to be clear: JW is not the end all for this team…..i wont cry a river if he returns but i sure wont be jumping for joy…..it’ll be prove it….yet again….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  33. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

    @postman

Just pointing out the absurdity of trying to bash a QB for throwing 8 INTs in the regular season while shamefully defending Jameis who consistently plays like the dumbest player on the field

  34. El Buco Realisto Says:

It’s so simple that even 813broccoli gets it!!!!!!!!!!! And he is so dumb, everytime he hears that it is “chilly” outside, he runs out the front door with a spoon!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He even finally learned that the roster needs more talent and not just a “coaching up”!!!!!!!!!!!!

    go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  35. Dapostman Says:

    @Loyal,

funny you haven’t addressed the last two games of Brady throwing picks to LOSE these games.

I’m not bashing Tom Brady. I’m pointing out that the Brady bandwagoners discount his pick 6’s in crucial times but will bash Winston at the drop of a hat.

Winston is blamed for losing his last two games but Brady isn’t blamed for losing his.

It’s so obvious that Stevie Wonder could see it.

    JW had 7 PICK 6s!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!…..lol…..

JW cant even get us to the playoffs where we know he’ll throw a PICK6…..

My choice is Carr but I’m ok with Bridgewater too.

  40. El Buco Realisto Says:

    @813broccoli

Actually, you would have to count back to 2015, to get to the 30 int’s!!!!!! From 2016 would be “29” INT’s!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But sheep, even 813brocoli can see it, and he is so slow, it takes him 4 hours to watch 60 Minutes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Team sport. This is not the Jamies show

And the Dumbest comment is WE HAVE NO DEFENSE hahah

Bucs’ Defense has gotten much better and had the BEST RUN DEFENSE in the league. The Bucs played against some of the Best runners in the league and shut them down

    But we have No Defense

Kicker sucks (can we get 5 years to grow our kicker)

    BUT JAMIES IS EVERYTHING

    PLEASE

  42. Loyaltotheend Section 312 Says:

    @Postman

You are trying to dissect a pick 6 in a Playoff game, a playoff game versus regular season!!! Jameis can’t even get this team near a post season game because he chokes when he has the ball and the team needs a score to win (see the last two games)

Look at Brady’s weapons vs Jameis as well in 2019. Comparing their pick 6’s is laughable

  43. 813bucboi Says:

    realist

    wrong yet again…..

talent is fine…..we needed coaches that could develop players…..

its ok….things will get better for you and smitty….

  45. LuxuryLuggageDelivery4Less Says:

Joe, Why not have a poll to see how many Bucs fans want Tom Brady! I dob’t think BA wants him either. Do you think he has the arm to push the ball downfield the way BA needs? BA would have to devise a whole new offensive game plan; a dink and dunk stylle to accommodate Brady like they do in New England and that would be a waste of perfectly great talent at WR. But I know this was just a n off-season fluff article Joe, so you get a pass on ridiculousness.

  46. 813bucboi Says:

  47. BrianBucs Says:

Let’s face it, having Winston as their starting QB is costing the Glazers money. The MAJORITY of the fan base is not going to pay big ticket prices to come and watch him play, continually throwing interceptions and pick 6’s and continually giving games away.
The Glazers see a half empty Ray Jay, a shrinking fan base plus the loss of corporate sponsors and advertisers. And why is that?
Bucs need to make a big splash at the QB position to excite and energize the fan base. Signing Winston is not it.

  48. Eye Test!! Says:

Be sure and check his eyes!

Or deal with another Jameis Squintston !!

  49. Tampabuscsbro Says:

Ndog and Tmax in the same comment section. WHEW I’ll tell you it’s always a trip with those two around Ndog thinks Winston should be on a pedestal next to manning, Montana and Farve where Tmax just likes to say some of the most outlandish things he can think of at any point in time.

  50. Tampabuscsbro Says:

Joe I need to ask a question. What are the moderating rules in here. For some reason certain users can say whatever they want and call people names and slander them with outright false statements but why aren’t we allowed to call them out by name.

  51. Joe Says:

The MAJORITY of the fan base is not going to pay big ticket prices to come and watch him play, continually throwing interceptions and pick 6’s and continually giving games away.

The “MAJORITY” of the fan base doesn’t buy tickets. You think the Bucs only have 45,000 fans total?

  52. Joe Says:

Cool. You sell the ads, OK?

    We split 50/50.

  53. toby Says:

My shtick gets the MOD treatment & barking clown responses every now & again, but I ain’t whining when someone comes for me…I just spit the truth & keep on keeping on…Take it as a badge of honor that you got under their skin…:) Higher Ground, my man!

    With that said…

Brady is not the guy for BA’s 5-7 step drop back & let the play develop scheme.

IINM…JW3 was told to put weight back on when BA was hired, because BA told him he was going to take a pounding to make this OFF work…& JW3 took 47 sacks & some pretty big hits along the way. Dude was under duress more often than not…& wicked tight pockets the rest of the time.

How is 43yr old Tom Brady going to handle that pounding & constant pressure??? I know I sure as hell didn’t snap back all spiry at 43 like I did at 26…So, I have to imagine that TB12 wouldn’t fair any better…I’m sure Giselle would just as soon he retire a PAT, as take the pounding he’d take w/ Leftwich calling plays.

Plus there’s the $35M+/yr he’ll want to sell tickets & game jersey’s in 2020…Wouldn’t a Draft Day Surprise QB & new uniform roll-out result in the exact same bump in sales??? Pretty sure it would.

  55. Joe Says:

You can add several others in there who would be better for business (as well as better chance to win) than Winston: Bridgewater, Carr, Rivers, Dalton, Flacco, even Tannehill would generate more interest than Winston coming back. This isn’t about age either, as with the exception of Bridgewater, not really any of them are for long term, including Winston himself.

It’s not going to happen. No way. No how! Brady will test the market and then take less to remain with the Patriots.

But just to play devils advocate…what would happen if Brady came here and was told to throw so many deep passes?

He’d fail because he does not have to strength anymore. That’s not a knock on him, just reality. He would fail in a Gruden or Arians offense.

Joe, please stop writing about TB12. He’s not coming to Tampa. I doubt Tampa is even under consideration.

Have you all…not learned anything…about very rich people having their counsel find wayz to funnel money, after the fact to certain people or entities, through a myriad of LLC’s tied to LLC’s, owned by other LLC’s, for their ultimate purposes???!?

For the…born yesterday crowd (cause I work in the Markets ya know where people like Tepper reside Appaloosa Management)….if TB12…were say approximately worth a net cash benefit to the Bucs organization of $130 million over 3 combined years, in ALL adfitional income streams to the organization…

Maybe, the salary offer is an ALLOWABLE $40 million over 2 years, fully guaranteed. So $80 million there total on the books, the salary cap, next 2 years.

Then…hired counsel, finds ways to funnel over say 2-4 years, and additional $50 million to Tommy Boy……let’s just say through alternate means, via a aforementioned intricate web of LLC’s over time. For “consulting” to business practices, othet ancillary viable compensation….sources.

Perhaps you all…., some of you…were born yesterday.

    Its just a question of…will.

Anyone less than an MBA maybe need not respond.

Always thought this was happening. No one in their right mind would play for a such a discount for so long. Always believed Kraft had some offshore account in the Caymans where he stashed Tommy’s money.

First time I ever heard Joe say something sensible regarding jaymiss and the qb position. Damn right it’s good for biz. ON EVERY SINGLE LEVEL! SCREW JAYMISS

I just don’t get why anyone would be excited about getting another teams Qb at the end of their career. He’d never consider himself a Buccaneer 🏴‍☠️. Jameis gives the Bucs the best chance to win this year. I just hope the Bucs don’t screw this one up.

  98. Buc4evr Says:

Brady would create a lot of hype right up until he gets killed in the first game. Seriously, this isn’t the team for an aging Qb at the end of his career. With no running game, NFC south defenses would destroy him. Let’s just franchise tag Jameis and draft a QB.

  99. martinii Says:

As I see it, if we would miraculously get Brady, he would live through the season, and take us to the SB wouldn’t that be a bit like cheating? We had to pay a “Ringer,” to come in and pull one out for us. Would rather see a team built from scratch win that has a chance to remain on top for a few years, than one that crashes and burns when Mr. Brady retires.
