GMC, Still A Buccaneer

February 21st, 2020

Appears on local pod.

Interesting soul-bearing insight from former Bucs stud defensive tackle Gerald McCoy.

The six-time Pro Bowler who could someday have his name included in the Bucs’ Ring of Honor dropped in for a sitdown on the “Tampa Bay 55” podcast, co-hosted by WTSP-TV Channel 10 news anchor Ryan Bass and Rob Higgins, the president/CEO of the Super Bowl LV Host Committee.

Super Bowl 55 will be played in Tampa in February 2021.

On the pod, GMC opened up about his feelings for the Tampa Bay community, how he continued to text teammates offering football tips despite playing for the Stinking Panthers and how he is still tight with many of his old teammates.

GMC, as he told Bass and Higgins is proud of his Bucs days and proud to be a citizen of the Tampa Bay communities. That’s why, he said, he can often be found at Rays and Lightning games not so much because he’s a big baseball or hockey fan, but he believes in supporting the community.

And GMC, who still lives in the area with his family, admitted, it’s not uncommon for folks to see him going to work out in the mornings repping Bucs gear.

“I still wear my Tampa gear to work out,” GMC said. “Technically I am a free agent. So I can wear what I want.

“I will always be a Buccaneer.”

Some highlights of the GMC interview:

* GMC said besides trying to win a Super Bowl, he wants to experience playing in a playoff game at least just once before he calls it a career. “Just a chance to experience a postseason. I don’t know what it is like to prepare for an extra game. I don’t know what it is like to have a bye week to prepare for an extra game. I don’t know what it is like. I want to go to the facility the day after the last game not to clean out my locker but to prepare for an extra game.”

* When Jameis Winston, Lavonte David, Donovan Smith, Mike Evans and others stood up for him at his son’s Senior Night game (he played for Tampa Catholic) as GMC and the Stinking Panthers were traveling to the west coast for a road game, he said he had no idea what was happening and he was happy the lights on the plane were shut off as he got emotional when he saw the photos. “Even though we didn’t experience the postseason, the brotherhood and family you can gain from this game is bigger than the game and that showed. I will always go to bat for my teammates. They didn’t have to do that.”

* Said he would watch video of the Bucs in his spare time and was not shy about offering tips when he noticed wrong things on tape. “I don’t care who your coach is, that’s not what we do,” GMC said he texted Will Gholston once. “I told Will, ‘You tell those guys they have to run to the ball!'”

* On the Bucs becoming a dominant defense against the run and becoming a complete defense later in the season, “Those guys turned it on.”

* On his vocal detractors who were always upset GMC didn’t mirror Warren Sapp’s demeanor GMC said, “A lot of people would give me a hard time for smiling on the sidelines. Man, I love what I do!”

 * GMC noted that his younger children hear GMC and his wife refer often to their Oklahoma roots. So they parrot their parents and tell people they too are from Oklahoma. GMC said he always corrects them, and informs them that no, they are from Florida.

And in closing, GMC told the podcast’s audience that whenever and wherever his NFL days come to an end, he has every intention of making Tampa his forever home.

  2. Buccaneerscotty Says:

    I always loved GMC

  3. Bucsfanman Says:

Good guy, good player but I don’t miss him on the field in a Bucs uniform. I don’t blame him for our woes because he was surrounded by crap talent. He simply symbolizes an era of defensive futility.

  4. Thisisouryear!!! Says:

Great guy. I think he would be well suited for a defensive end in Bowles defense if he’d come back on a team friendly contract.

  5. gbobucsfan Says:

Wait, so what was all that….”I’m home” nonsense that he was spouting in the Charlotte video?

  6. james west Says:

that’s a no for me, thank you

  7. Bird Says:

    Tmax is slipping

He shouod have commented cancer 93 fifteen times by now
Another late night meth bender ?

  8. rhenry Says:

Had he signed with the Ravens, he would have gotten his playoff games. But no, he wanted to B.t.ch slap the Bucs and sign with the Panthers.

  9. Bruce Blahak Says:

F OFF !!!! … “The Face of Losing”

  10. Pa Privateer Says:

He is a class act and I appreciate what he gave when he was here.

The 2019 Defense was superb without him. If he wants to come back and play DE, then we can consider him. If not, see you in the offseason doing good works in the community.

  11. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Still adorably soft.

  12. gotbbucs Says:

I know where he’s going with this…..and the answer is a hard NO.

  13. tmaxcon Says:

Cancer93’s only legacy is being a me first pos and the leader of more blowouts and basement titles than any buc captain in this sorry franchises history. Any fan of this selfish quiter should be ashamed and embarrassed thier standards for players and men are so low.

  14. Bucnjim5656 Says:

I guess that sweet Carolina welcome he recieved ended quickly when their run D went from top to almost dead last.

GMC always was a class act!

I guess you’d be correct if you include selfish and being a quitter as classy….

  16. tmaxcon Says:

    Pa Privateer

Appreciating quiting on coaches, soft play, blowouts and basement titles is the buccaneer way after all. The worst winning percentage in sports proves that. Cancer93 did his part to keep the losing alive during his decade of failure. I expect nothing less from low standard bucfan to support career losrrs clinging to the meaningless good in community garbage…

  17. Pick6 Says:

Sign with a great roster as a rotation guy (probably not the highest paying team), and hope for the best. Tampa will welcome you back post-career but try to get a chance to play for a sure-fire postseason franchise and experience a great run while you can. As for the Bucs, they are rightfully not looking back as they let this new generation of defensive studs set the tone and prove their worth

  18. ModHairKen Says:

How is he Ring of Honor?

“F OFF !!!! … “The Face of Losing”

Lol, you are one classy piece of S*, aren’t you?

  20. Wesley Says:

Good dude not his fault he was overrated.

  21. tmaxcon Says:

    BucsFIRE

Looks like someone is in denial….. no one has captained more blowouts, home field losses and basement titles than the ultimate buccaneer loser Cancer93…. couple his losing with his long history of selfish antics cancer93 will go down as one of the worst investments glazers have ever made. I bet you loved all the sideline dances down by 30 too… cancer93 was just another hypocrite very similar to the one dimensional dungy the clown. They both tossed the god card around to shield thier piss poor onfield results… but obviously some of you bought into that.

  22. tmaxcon Says:

    BucsFIRE

Would you prefer Crying Clown or the Face of the Basement years over the very accurate Face of Losing…. there are just so many cliches of failure that apply to cancer93. I admit its hard to choose one when he failed in so many ways.

Good dude not his fault he was overrated.

Good dudes dont quit on coaches

  24. tmaxcon Says:

Given the piss poor quality of the current members of the ring of underachievement outside of sapp and selmon cancer93 probably deserves a spot….

  25. DB55 Says:

McIceCream is a loser who took his loser Ora to Carolina and they completely imploded.

Suh don’t do much smiling that’s why he’ll never have to do a lame as interview like this.

Don’t get it twisted if you think mr.19.5 sacks is going to do it again without Suh you got another thing coming.

  26. Marine Buc Says:

If McCoy came back to Tampa to play and Suh is still here who would wear #93?

  27. 813bucboi Says:

    good riddance!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  28. BucsFIRE Says:

t-max, I don’t have a problem with your opinions. That was directed at Bruce Blahak’s classless pile of garbage.

  29. Hodad Says:

I wanted GMC gone as much as tmax. He was an over paid blowhard, loser, not a leader. Doll playing, geisha girl. He wasn’t worth starter money anymore, and proved that with Carolina. That being said, would anyone want him back for a year at a vet minimum salary as a back up? He probably still has ten good reps a game in him, and most of those reps would come in pass rush situations.

  30. Cobraboy Says:

    No No No No No

McCoy is pimping for a job in Tampa.

    No No No No No

    And No to the RoH.

  31. Jmarkbuc Says:

“I don’t care who your coach is, WE don’t do it that way “. Who is we? He got a mouse in his pocket?

  32. Bruce Blahak Says:

@BucsFIRE…you think McBoy is classy? Fake, phony smiles and stealing Bucs cash?…AND playing soft and ingraining the “do as little as possible to get your money attitude” onto young players. CANCER was the best name for him. He brought severe cancer to this team. Laughing on the sidelines getting hammered by the opposition, please. Almost a bigger fraud than WinSTUNNED…

  33. NPRSageBoy. Says:

Does he want his #93 back?

    Peace, out

  34. WestChap Says:

It was a sad ending due to Licht getting mushy headed and not trading him 2 years earlier. Imagine if we’d drafted Aaron Donald instead of getting cold feet when GMC started whining. Sounds like he wants back but he became a negative the day JPP had to call him out publicly In 2018… and I doubt he would measure up to Suh’s expectations of a teammate. We can’t have him distracting and diluting LVD, Vea and White. JPP + Suh = 10 x GMC. No hate, just a fact. ROH? Ok, but says more about the black hole of his time with the Bucs than his contribution to the Bucs legacy.

  35. MTM Says:

@DoooshLaRue- You nailed it!!! Still adorably soft like Charmin.

  36. MTM Says:

Maybe McCoy doesn’t wan to play with Cam (Purple Rain) Newton.

  37. FanO’Bucs Says:

    Good guy.

Credit to Gerald for being true to himself. I think a lot of us could learn from that. ☺️

  38. buc53 Says:

Gotta love GMC! His haters have never had a leg to stand on, and their insults have always looked petty and illustrated a sheer ignorance about the game of football.

The guy gave Tampa loyalty and some amazing play.

  39. jmarkbuc Says:

    53

    You watched the games… right?

  40. tmaxcon Says:

    53

You must be 1 dimensional dungy the clown or cancer93’s mother to view his failed tenure with blinders on like that.

    Cancer93 was a fraud

  41. El Buco Realisto Says:

It’s crazy how the sheep ignore the truth!!!!!!!!!! She-mc lead the dance parties in the locker room after losses!!!!!!!!!!!! She-mc complained and forced scheme change when she was ask to play in a 3-4 flex defense, because she was not getting her stats!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She-mc posted when jay-miss started leading the pre-game huddle!!!!!!!!!!!! Once again the sheep got exactly what they deserve of she-mc stats at the expense of team defense production!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I lost respect for Ira for guaranteeing ring of honor induction for she-mc!!!!!!!!

    go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  42. BigMacAttack Says:

I think Gerald learned some lessons with the Panthers. The grass isn’t always greener. I hope he gets that playoff game. Take a small 1 yr. contract with the Patriots and you’re there.

  43. Howard Cosell Says:

No way Arians brings back this mentally soft, self-centered media hound

  44. BucsFIRE Says:

I am in agreement that GM’s career in TB left a lot to be desired, and I don’t think he belongs in the ROH. — His lack of game changing plays hurt us, and it was telling how much our Run Defense improved after he left.

  45. ATrain Says:

GMC a free Agent NO WAY

The Panthers didn’t lock him up in a multi year contract for 150 million No Way

This is the guy Joe and the GMC bandwagon screamed we couldn’t let go
GMC IS AWESOME DEFENSE WILL SUFFER.

Oh wait that’s right the only thing that happened different in Carolina last year was the Coach got the axe … Oh wait a Minute that’s not different for GMC

SORRY all the same Coach Cut and in the couch in Jan. GMC FOOTBALL

  46. adam from ny Says:

if anyone can clearly state a moment this season where they said to themselves “dam i miss gmc out there on defense”, i’d like to hear it…

team flow moved on quick, fast and in a hurry without geraldini…

just wish him well wherever he lands…

he’s just not an arians’ buccccccc

  47. tmaxcon Says:

The only thing you need to know about cancer93 is that during his decade of failure, is his near double digit collection of basement titles and zero postseason appearances. the man knows how to lose any way you slice it. Not to mention, Cancer93 has killed more careers than automaton.

  48. BigHog Says:

Tsuc: GMC…pos, really, you really need to stop spreading that Russian propaganda for Colt 45, you making your people look bad!

Tsuc: GMC…pos, really, you really need to stop spreading that Russian propaganda for Colt 45, you making your people look bad!

not sure who my people are outside of no excuse winners but anyone who quits on coaches and hides behind the god card to deflect criticism is a pos anyway you slice it.

  50. Matt Says:

Betaboy McCoy just won’t go away. He got away with highway robbery in broad day light and wants to return to the scene of the crime like many criminals do to admire their work. The poster boy for mediocrity should end his career with Cowboys and finish 8-8 with Betaboy McCoy logging 8 sacks all coming in the 4th quarter of blowout games. I can’t recall 1 meaningful sack but I CAN recall many crucial offsides and neutral zone infractions that cost us games. Guys, if Betaboy McCoy makes it to the ring of honor absolutely anyone can even Aaron Sears.

  51. westernbuc Says:

Imagine if GMC had Shaq, JPP, and Vita Vea throughout his career

  52. SammyRebel Says:

Hey Tmaz , it kind of bothers me how you never acknowledge Derrick Brooks when speaking of passed Bucs greats, I’m gonna need you to put some respect on his name with your piss poor comments

  53. tmaxcon Says:

    SammyRebel

I have no respect for vinceyoung55…. he never won a damn thing without riding sapps coattails…. 55 is cancer93 but lucky enough to have had a sapp carry him to the promise land. 55 was good sapp made him great….

  54. Mike Johnson Says:

Despite many of our Bucs fans tryin to make GMC the villian. He always was and is, a Class Act.

  55. tmaxcon Says:

55 and barber never won anything wothoiy sapp boyh hung on way too long embarrassing themselves and franchise

No one confuses popularity with greatness like bucfan

  56. lowercaseg Says:

so classy but chose to play for the stinking panthers, yea right bro get outta town

  57. tmaxcon Says:

    SammyRebel

Let the washed up has beens go…. 1 fluke championship and 5 career postseason wins is not legendary. Pro bowls are less than meaningless and hof was rendered a joke the day ira led the con job to get the unqualified 1 dimensional dungy the clown enshrined. Raise your standards sir…. i bet you still pay to see all the geriatric hair bands with 1 one original member because you can’t let go of the past.

  58. BigHog Says:

Tsuc : bumping your gums, sayin nothing that makes any sense…but the hate I understand!

  59. BigMacAttack Says:

I’m glad he loves it here. Me too, exception being brain dead drivers. GMC’s a good guy, just not a great football player.

  60. Buc believer Says:

That’s nice Gerald….. now get out of our hair.

  61. Rod Munch Says:

GRRRRR!!!! HE’S NOT MEAN!!!! HE DOESN’T EAT HIS BOOGERS!!!!! GRRRR!!!! IM SO ANGRY!!!! GRRRRRRRRR!!!!!

  62. Cobraboy Says:

    Ring of Honor for McCoy?

Not until Simeon Rice and James Wilder get their piece of RayJay real estate.

McCoy getting that honor would be the first one that just pisses me off. No way!

  63. Iamabuc Says:

The way I see it…he saw how good was our defense, so he wants to come back and be a part of it. No thanks. You had your chance and you blew it. We don’t need you to come here and mess up what Arians got going , and destroy the chemistry of our players with your soft ass. Again, no.

  64. teacherman777 Says:

GMC is a sweet hearted Pisces like Jesus was!

    Fishmen! Sweetmen!

We are still in the Age of Pisces. 1AD to 2150 AD.

    Go Bucs!
