Bucs QB Coach: “I Hope” Jameis Returns

February 27th, 2020

Bucs QB coach Clyde Christensen.

Joe had an extensive chat with Bucs quarterback coach Clyde Christensen yesterday as he wandered through radio row at the combine inside the Indiana Convention Center planted in snowy downtown Indianapolis.

Joe and Christensen spoke a lot about how the combine has changed since he was a young coach. Christensen marveled how now, you can’t (and shouldn’t) be too judgmental on prospects as so many states now legalize weed.

Of course, the discussion landed on Christensen’s prize pupil, Mr. Entertainment, America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.

Christensen absolutely raved about Jameis’ work ethic. Joe means “raved.” Christensen said Jameis did absolutely everything he was asked to do. Never balked. Attacked his workouts with excitement and intensity.

The way Christensen described working with Jameis, the Bucs veteran quarterback sounds like a dream to coach.

“It’s not like you ask him to do something and he gives you the finger,” Christensen joked.

Joe noted how Jameis’ 30 picks in 2019 were nearly double his previous worst (18). Joe asked Christensen if there was a way for Jameis to shave down the picks and Christensen believes there is  — stating Jameis had “a bad” final two games to end the season

“You don’t want to end a season like that,” Christensen said.

Joe asked Christensen if he looked forward to working with Jameis again and Christensen reacted like he wanted to grab a clipboard and run out onto a football field right away.

Then came the money question. Joe asked Christensen if Jameis would return to the Bucs for the 2020 season.

“I hope so,” Christensen said. He added there are moving parts associated with Jameis’ return or departure that are out of his hands.

So if Jameis does come back, it sure seems like he’s in good hands, both with Christensen and with Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians.

Joe will have more from Christensen later.

    New Decade
    New Jerseys
    New Contract
    Go Bucs!!!!!!

  2. Jonzey Says:

    Please sign Winston

  3. Buccaneerscotty Says:

    Fire this guy now!

  4. Gman’sBucs Says:

    Bruce wants wins not stats!!

  5. stravenite Says:

Nobody is questioning JW’s work ethic, but it is not equating to more in the win column, I think it is key that when discussing JW BA does not know what he has, but thinks Philip is a quality QB to hold the fort with the quality of supporting cast, the people who decide have made their choice known by not supporting JW and it is very telling Time for change !.

  6. 1sparkybuc Says:

With a healthy Godwin and a decent FG kicker, the Bucs are 7-1 in the last eight games.

  7. Pete Says:

    I hope Jameis returns!

  8. Defense Rules Says:

Interesting that Clyde noted that Jameis had a bad last couple of games. So apparently the 25 INTs up to that point were acceptable? Sorry Clyde, but the Bucs had EIGHT games in which the Bucs’ offense had 3 or more giveaways. In those 8 games Jameis threw 24 INTs out of the total of 34 TOs. That’s like 3 INTs per game. And Clyde, YOUR JOB was to get him to stop doing that.

Think for a second how ridiculous BOTH of those stats are. Half a season worth of games in which the Bucs offense averaged OVER FOUR giveaways per game. Bucs actually won TWO of those 8 games … by a total of 6 points … despite losing the Turnover Differential. Both games should’ve been blow-outs, but they weren’t, thanks to Bucs giveaways.

So Clyde, Jameis might be a dream to coach, but he’s apparently also a dream to play against. Here’s an idea for our QB coach … FIX JAMEIS and make Bad Jameis disappear. Do YOUR job.

  9. Pelsbuc61 Says:

So tired of the “great work ethic” spiel. Us fans know who he is and that he can’t win a meaningful game.

  10. JP_09 Says:

I’m sick of the Matt Gay excuse, the dude had a terrible year so what he was a rookie kicker making under a million per yer, Winston lost more games than Matt Gay he was making 20 million. They both sucked, if Winston didn’t throw 30 pick, 17 which were under 10 yards the Bucs should have been in the playoffs regardless of Matt Gays struggles. The truth is Winston is not a “Franchise QB” otherwise he would’ve found ways to make plays to win games when given the opportunity and other than the SEAHAWKS & Rams game he, overall he failed.

  11. ModHairKen Says:

JP_09, spot on. Four losses, at least, solely on K and QB. Why assume they will be better?

  12. Morgus the Magnificent Says:

If anyone REALLY believes Winston is Super Bowl material, please familiarize yourself with the term “Baker Act”

  13. Ndog Says:

So this tells me what i suspected all along and that is maybe Jameis doesn’t want to be here that much anymore. Everyone keeps thinking the Bucs don’t want him but maybe the truth is he doesn’t want them.

You never know with the way he’s been treated and the crap defense, kicking and running game he’s had to deal with.

  14. SteveK Says:

    Good riddance!

Jameis can turn it over, and be one suspension away from a ban for someone else.

I hoped that it would work out and rooted for Jameis, but he’s America’s Turnover Machine.

I bet he doesn’t go to playoffs next year- unless as a backup.

  15. Bird Says:

The article from yesterday by logical joe was dead on

    Heart vs
    head

And thats jAmeis downfall. If you remember , there were a few games where jameis was throwing the ball away. That stopped quickly. And to end season the way it did showed to coaches he wasnt listening to them. Blocked them out. He was gonna do what he wants to do. Make an impossible throw.

Curious: Did you ask christenson about the carolina game and not pulling jameis maybe after TO four would have been fair.
I mean 5 picks and 1 lost fumble is almost impossible to accomplish

  16. Bird Says:

    Ndog

Dont worry. Brady aint coming. No one else coming. They may draft a future guy but jameis will be here for next year.

  17. MadMax Says:

Well Clyde, i hope not. But i hope we draft a RB with your name “Clyde”.

  18. Pewter power Says:

Lol calling fans idiots it appears you are the idiot. Yes he wants winston to return as do most of us but we want a back up plan in place as soon as he starts throwing too many picks just like he has done the last 5 years. It doesnt mean bring him back without looking for a better option or bringing him back at any price he thinks he should get

Dude said he hopes he comes back, translation he has no more say than any fans do. He isn’t a deciding factor so its irrelevant what clyde thinks. Yea winston had a bad 2 games, he had a bunch of other bad games as well, first game of the season, london game comes to mind also, he sucked for both saints games and you cant shrink when playing the big boys in the league

  19. Ineffable Dullard Repairman Says:

Lots of coaching and GM decisions made in these comments. Love it when fans tell the owner, GM and coaches how stupid they are and how if you were in charge things would be different.
Granted, there have been some buffoons in the aforementioned positions, but if it’s so damn easy why don’t you quit your day job, quit the incessant crying and complaining and show them how it’s done. Bottom line: they are all millionaires and most likely you are not. Maybe if you stop complaining and do something about it, you could get one of these jobs and read joebucs comments about how inept you are.
Then, like them, you could laugh all the way to the bank.

  20. MadMax Says:

LOL, yeah Ndog, crap Defnse that ranked #1 the last 5 games but your boi kept giving the opposing team the ball….you are just as delusional as him “ballin” with your posts! its a fk d up kinda funny.

  21. SmoothBayRider Says:

    NDog is hilarious

  22. 941bucsfan Says:

    Welcome back Jameis

  23. AlteredEgo Says: Your comment is awaiting moderation. Says:

There….”Ain’t No Hope in Football “

  24. Mr. Reality Says:

“It’s not like you ask him to do something and he gives you the finger.” If that is considered a positive trait as opposed to an absent event that must never occur, then no wonder so many NFL players are such poor individuals. And no Clyde, Winston didn’t do everything you’ve all asked, because over the five years, he still can’t comply with player conduct rules, hasn’t taken his coachs’ direction, and hasn’t gotten better as a football player. Looks like Clyde is part of the problem.

  25. Allbuccedup Says:

Coming from a man who sucks as an offensive coordinator and is a permanent quarterback coach as doesn’t do a very good job at that.

  26. Bruce Blahak Says:

“he’s ballin, check the sheet” is the lone comment that defines everything about this FRAUD…doesn’t understand the concept of ball protection and he can’t read a defense anyway, obviously…will never win anything in the NFL. SAY GOODBYE!!!!!!!!!!!

  27. OneBuc55 Says:

Every QB picked #1 has a different journey in the NFL…These poor kids usually end up on really bad football teams and very few or them succeed…

Jameis has some intangibles that simply cannot be taught; and he’s still young…His work-ethic, fearlessness in the pocket when the play breaks down, and his arm talent imo is what makes him special…

He’s obviously, still a work in progress, but better protection and a little balance in the play-calling would be a good starting point in minimizing these turnovers…Along with Jameis understanding when to cut his losses and move on to the next play…

  28. MadMax Says:

^ “Along with Jameis understanding when to cut his losses and move on to the next play…” thats the problem, slow twitch thinking. Hes shown how slow he is in that department and it cant be corrected, is what it is. Thats why its time to move on.

  29. D-Rome Says:

Christensen said Jameis did absolutely everything he was asked to do. Never balked. Attacked his workouts with excitement and intensity.

You know, it really is too bad Jay-Miss is a lower tier NFL QB because apart from his penchant for turning the ball over and costing the team games it seems that off the field he does everything you’d want him to do. He’s also been a great community guy.

  30. NO FEAR... Says:

I LOOK AT IT THIS WAY , WINSTON WAS THROWING INTERCEPTION FROM THE BEGAINING OF EACH YEAR , AND THE LAST YEAR FROM THE START OF THE YEAR WHY DIDN’T THE COACHES FIX THE PROBLEM,, THEY HAD ALL YEAR COME TO THINK OF IT THEY HAD 5 YEARS TO FIX IT , SO YOUR SAYING THEIR GOING TO FIX IT 2020 , THAT BULL CRAP……SAME CRAP OVER AGAIN… NO WONDER THE FANS GET SO DAM PISSED OFF , IF THEY CAN SEE IT WHY IN THE HELL CAN’T THE COACHES SEE IT’S OVER FOR WINSTON …. MOVE ON !!!YOU CAN’T FIX IT THE BISCUIT NO MADER HOW THE TWIST IT !!!

  31. Joseph Mamma Says:

I know plumbers that do everything you tell them to do. Never balk. Attack the toilet with intensity and excitement.

But if they suck at plumbing about half the time what is the point?

  32. Bucsfan951 Says:

@defense: all of those turnovers but let’s blame the defense for giving up points smh

121 points scored by the opponents off of Winston turnovers!!!

  33. AKickInTheBucNuts Says:

What answer did you expect from a guy named Clyde.

  34. BigHog Says:

Word on the street has it that …Mr. 5,000 has already agreed to a new contract with the BUCS!!!…That’s just what I heard!!

  35. Bruce Blahak Says:

@BigHog…I hope not, that’s defecating on the “remaining” fans…den of depression will turn into a ghost town…

  36. ATrain Says:

Bucs where able to make a deal with Jamies

The Panthers, Saints, and Falcons all gave the Bucs 5 million to keep Jamie’s

They all said they are guaranteed atleast one TD thrown by Jamies

  37. ATrain Says:

    YOU JAMIES HATERS ARE WRONG

JAMIES DID NOT THROW 33 TDs last year

JAMIES 39 TDs —- how many QBs can say that

now 6 of those were for other teams

That means almost 20% Of Winston’s TDs were for other teams

  38. SKBucsFan Says:

The 2020 schedule is a tough one. Especially at home. With America’s Interception Machine at the helm we can expect to lose 5 out the 8 home games. The last time I looked a losing record at home doesn’t exactly get butts in the seats.

Make the right decision Licht. If you don’t do it for the fan base, at least do it for the sake of the Glazer’s wallets. That poor family has suffered enough. It’s time to move on form Winston.

  39. Craig Says:

But, Boss, he had 5100 yards and 33 touchdowns. It’s not my fault he threw 30 interceptions or melted into slag for those last two games.

  40. Sorryjackchuckiesback Says:

Yeah but see.. He ended the last 2 games badly because THAT’S who Winston is!! He always looks amazing in games that don’t matter, against teams that don’t matter!!!… But when you start hearing things like “this next game is a must win” or if anything at all is truly on the line….. HE CHOKES!!!!!! He did it against Oregon with the most embarrassing fumble I’ve ever seen in a moment like that!! On par with “the butt fumble!!”… That was HISTORICAL choking!! and he’s done it against every big team, big game he’s had in the NFL!! The guy can put up numbers but the simple truth is he is NOT a winner!!! In college he was on one of the most well rounded teams in college!! They won in spite of him in his second year!!! …. That’s what the bucs will have to do if they resign this clown!!

  41. TexBuc Says:

Winston Derangement Syndrome when the Bucs QB Coach says he want him but all these professional “fans” know better. All the “fans” hear is Winston is gone…….LOL.

  42. Posey99 Says:

When you’re the QB coach and your QB throws 30 INT… He should be worried about himself having a job much less winston

  43. Posey99 Says:

A soon as Winston said look at the numbers i’m ballin’ that was the last straw for me confirming that he only cares about himself and reiterates he tries to make all the plays with his selfish reckless style. We need to WIN and hes not a winner. Team sports folks

  44. WestChap Says:

I want him gone but I think he’s coming back… so, grateful to see at least one coach playing the good cop role as Bruce and Licht have been doing over time in the bad cop roles.

  45. kyle Says:

lol, I can remember when Christiansen’s nick name was “clud”.. AKA clud christiansen. His offense under the dungy regime was putrid..

  46. Mister Negative Nancy Says:

“Attacked his workouts with excitement and intensity.”

    Just like his women…

  47. WillieG Says:

Gee, he throws picks when the game is on the line annnnnnd his worst games came when a winning season was on the line. But he threw for 5,000 yards, and he works hard, so let’s sign him! Ridiculous

  48. Anonymous Says:

Want jamesis to be great? Improve the quality of the O-line. Give him a running back that can actually take a little pressure off of him. And finally a slit receiver.
