Tampa’s Bad Rap

January 22nd, 2020

Tarnished NFL image?

Is Tampa starting to get a reputation for being a bad place for NFL players to be?

Joe asks this question because of a few things that are happening.

Now more than once, Joe has heard former coffee fetcher for Bill Walsh, Al Davis and Bill Belicheat, former NFL general manager Michael Lombardi, say on his podcast “GM Shuffle,” that Tampa is a bad place to try to build a winning team because of, what he says, are too many things to do.

Yes, Lombardi also mentioned the local adult clothing-optional establishments that dot the area, among other things.

Joe is always reminded of this when he thinks of the horrible home record the Bucs have had since the dark January 2009 Friday afternoon when Chucky was fired.

No team has lost more home games in the post-Chucky era than the Bucs.

The terrible play at home has frustrated Bucs coach Bucco Bruce Arians. Even Arians grumbled once about how he may have to rethink his stance about team shrinks because of the way the Bucs trip over themselves at home.

This subject came to mind (again) when Joe was reading a dispatch from Mobile, Ala. the site of the Senior Bowl practices this week, typed by Charlie Campbell of Walter Football.

Campbell wrote that it is likely the best receiver in the draft, CeeDee Lamb of Oklahoma, could slide. Not because of a lack of elite athletic ability or that he’s a bad guy, but that he likes to party.

Oklahoma wide receiver CeeDee Lamb is known to be a good kid, according to NFL scouts and to sources around the Sooners program. They all say he is a really nice person and a good teammate. With that being said, Lamb has developed the reputation for being a huge partier, and team sources feel that is going to be a challenge for him in maintaining focus depending on where he goes.

“[Lamb] definitely shouldn’t go to a place like Miami, or Tampa Bay. That could be Michael Clayton all over again,” said one scout. “I’ll put it to you this way. He would be awesome in Green Bay.”

What does this mean? That Lamb likes adult clothing-optional establishments over studying a playbook?

That he would rather be at Clearwater Beach than working out? That he prefers fishing to catching balls from a JUGS gun? That he likes to spend his time (and money) at Indian casinos in the wee hours of the night?

Combined what this unsourced NFL scout told Campbell, what Lombardi always says about Tampa, and the Bucs’ rotten home record, is Tampa starting to get a bad reputation among NFL types?

And could all of this be a reason why former Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik put so much emphasis into drafting choirboys?

Joe you might be reading too much into this. Lombardi also was quoted per Tony Dungy that “Doug Peterson will not succeed as a coach he doesn’t have enough experience to be a good coach”. Yet he is a Super Bowl winner now and has his teams in the playoffs. I think Lombardi is all in with controversy now that he is in the media. Tampa hasn’t changed since Dungy and Chucky were here. Those clubs were here with Sapp, Rice and others on this team won a Super Bowl. The difference has been the approach of the coaches. BA just got the team and has first year was an evaluation year. He knows what he is doing.

This is the time of year when all the rumors now start to make players slide and Agents rich. This is the silly season with football.

Doesn’t he mean Mike Williams? Didn’t matter where HE went. He was an idiot.

Was Clayton a big party guy ? I know he was the 5th WR taken with the 15 pick or so. Which I was critical of because there were so many 1st rank positions still available.., LOL that and Michael Clayton scored his first NFL touchdown without his helmet on…LOL…

We all knew what was going on during the rah and talk show host dominik era!!!!!!!!!!! I like that joe acts surprise anytime the bad reputation comes up, yet in the same breath blames Coach Schiano that he ran off players for no good reason!!!!!!!!!! He was hired and told by the Glazers to clean up the locker room, who then butted heads with talk show dominik because he tried to protect all of his draft picks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

By what!!! say it!!! Be a Man!!!!! I say it!!!!!! By Alcohol, and the Club, and Drugs, and lying, blaming others, and non-work ethic!!!!!! Those are the reasons he cannot even get a work out anywhere!!!!!!!! and it started in 2010 and was a problem in 2011!!!!! A Coach was brought in to fix him remember!!!!!! and to clean up the three year bachelor party of the rah/dom era!!!! And thank goodness he did !!!!!!!!!! We should thank that great man everyday!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now lets see joe approve this comment hours later, because I have been in moderation for over two years for telling the truth about jay-miss!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not just the clubs. Was it lazy Albert Haynesworth that said something about not buying a boat in Tampa cuz it would eat up his time? Something like that anyways.
Not that this means anything but I’ll never forget how Lombardi became one of the “three stooges” in Cleveland. The gasping made for a wonderful sound bite. That’s going to be a hard thing for his reputation to get passed tho.

  7. tmaxcon Says:

Its a small market uneducated retirement community. Nightlife closer to olney, il, Mayberry or Green Acres than Chicago or New York… only endorsements available are car dealerships and adult diapers, franchise owns worse winning percentage in sports, 1 fluke championship, 6 postseason wins in 43 years, 13 years since last meaningful game, 18 years since last meaningful win, the bo Jackson embarrassment, 4 decent 1st rd picks in 43 years, horrible home record, field that resembles a goat pasture more than nfl turf. Bucs are minor league circus that would not exist if the league didn’t enjoy carrying a laughingstock franchise via revenue sharing. You cant rewrite history because it hurts your little feelings. Reality is a beotch…. bucs will never win another post season game the rest of thier nfl future.

Tampa is not receiving a bad rap Tampa EARNED the bad rap with all the blowouts and embarrassing on field product year in and year out. Jerry Jerry Jerry has been replaced with Tampa Tampa Tampa

  8. Wesley Says:

If I cared about winning I sure as hell wouldnā€™t want to be here.

  9. ClodHopper Says:

Found it. Also while searching found a headline that he got charged with reckless boating. šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

    https://www.joebucsfan.com/2011/11/haynesworth-missed-the-boat/

ā€œYou want to know the truth on that one?ā€™ā€™ Haynesworth said. ā€œIt was too pretty, it was too much water, too much sun here. I had just bought a nice, big boat, a good fast boat, and I really thought like if I came here Iā€™d mix my time in with football and boating. When I was at Tennessee, during the offseason then Iā€™d do the boating and do all my toys and playing around and all that. I figured with the water and the sun being here all year round, I was a little afraid of myself on a Tuesday going for a boat ride or something like that. I should have trusted myself and known, but I was kind of scared of that.”

  10. Pewter power Says:

Ridiculous…what about the teams that dont have an excuse for all the losing like Dallas. It’s not a new thing, and these clubs were jumping when we won a superbowl also. No coincidence guys wanted to come here because of the coach in place and it’s that simple. Greg schiano and raheem Morris didnt scream rush to tampa and the playoffs. For all the winning atlanta and Carolina has done in this division it’s gotten them absolutely nothing. Like us they are getting any credit based on their history because they were both considered trash by analysts and nobody cared about the record the year before.

  11. Jean Lafitte Says:

Unfortunately it can get worse when you make players instant millionaires. The fact is there are so many distractions and their money is burning a hole in their pocket.

  12. tmaxcon Says:

Dungy the clown never won anything in Tampa he just made you feel special about being mediocre in the regular season and gave you false hope with no chance in the postseason. On field results prove that. The legend of dungy the clown far surpassed his actual accomplishments years ago… the legend of dungy the clown has now become the biggest fishing tale in Florida it just gets bigger every year from a leach to a world record sailfish… low standard bucfan is the most laughable sports fan on earth.

  13. K2 Says:

Obviously, Tampa was an absolutely train wreck for Adam Humphries, Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. Clearly, Tampa is a problem….plus they don’t have alcohol or parties in Green Bay (I think having fun there is against the law).

  14. LaMarcus Says:

Tampa always been a minefield for players with star potential

Walter football says “not Tampa” to all their evals with players with any character concern even JW

It’s just not place for football and I see the raiders struggling as well in Vegas

  15. Bobby M. Says:

I think that concern is applicable to all young players….or even vets after they get a big pay day.

  16. tmaxcon Says:

The best way to define the bay area is the fact that Golden Coral is the most popular weeding rehearsal meal in town.

  17. Go Bucs 72 Says:

    What a load of nonsense.

  18. ChanEpic Says:

I think this take was totally valid PRIOR to BA’s arrival. NFL types like to play for winners, no matter the locale.

  19. tmaxcon Says:

    ChanEpic

BA has parlayed a feel good story similar the way Dungy the clown distracted from his failures and wasting sapp for 6 years…. remind me please of BA’s postseason record as head coach????? Just like dungy the clown his popularity severely overshadowed his failures and propped up thier occasional minor successes.talent and brains win championships not feel good stories and popular relics.

  20. 813bucboi Says:

    everyone likes to party….lol….

its a matter of: theres a time and place for everything…..

but he’s right….ive seen bucs players out late on a Wednesday night and im like damn dude dont you have practice in a few hours…lol….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  21. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

This is taken from people on the outside as an area that could care less about the bucs, take it or leave it and a team and town that has a petty thief and alleged sexual groper who throws ints every 3rd throw. That is the perception. Funny thing is BA has tried to hoodwink the fans the same way with all of his double talk since he got here from saying vh3 is the man to he can fix jameis to the bucs have RBs, teh kicking game is solved, etc….he thinks because he coached some ALREADY elite qbs, he can bamboozel the yocals in town; just like the nation as a whole

  22. Bradinator Says:

Sounds fairly ridiculous. Like there is LESS stuff to do in L.A., NYC, Boston and especially Las Vegas. What is Cleveland’s excuse? Detroit’s? Maybe the dumbest excuse I’ve ever seen. Please stop making up reasons why we have stunk. There are plenty of legitimate reasons. Piss poor coaching, turnovers galore, dumb penalties at the wrong time, players that ain’t that good. The list goes on. I’m guessing Mons Venus is the least of our problems

  23. tmaxcon Says:

Denver, new york, Phoenix and Atlanta all have 10x better strip joints than Tampa bay and unlike Tampa the girls in those cities understand dental hygiene and how to avoid meth mouth….

Mons venus lives off the legendary Joseph R. Redner reputation similar to the way joe hung on to that college scouting report that said cancer93 was great…

Joe please take note of the appropriate usage of legendary… please keep that in mind when wrongly using legendary when discussing washed up 1 year wonder has beens.

  24. WestChap Says:

If youā€™re looking for trouble you will usually find it no matter what city you call home… particularly if you have lots of cash to buy, travel to or have delivered. Remember the Vike boat excursions in sleepy Minn, the small problems Hernandez had in Boston, the problems Pacman Jones had everywhere. Its not us, its them. Tampa has drafted poorly at key positions for too long… just look at QB: Freeman (oops), Glennon (well, he shared a locker room with Russell Wilson?), McCown (really?) and Blameless (a beautiful arm wasted on an empty head). If any of these had worked out, very different story.

  25. Noles Says:

    Itā€™s a HORRIBLE EXCUSE…….

The RAYS & Bolts have NO PROBLEM winning under the same conditions & temptations…

What a bunch of BS…. grow up & be accountable

As mentioned already there is a time & place for everything

  26. tmaxcon Says:

In fairness the old library had the best lap dances…. all hail Star and Chantelle from library early 90s…. great women… no pay inequities complaints from those 2 wonderful ladies. They earned bank while making the bay proud!

  27. Joe Says:

Was Clayton a big party guy ?

  28. miken Says:

Im from tampa but if you are an nfl player… you don’t want tampa unless its paying you the most, that’s why it’s laughable to think Brady, Brees, River would even consider it. Only thing we have going for ourselves is BA. We are a dump and our record shows it…. we only get the Wards, Collins, the db from Detroit, ect ect ect… Most promising guys we draft look good as rookies and never develop in to starts like clayton , OJ, jw, dougie and a boat load of others. #its a buclife

  29. Hodad Says:

Tampa is a great place for any player to land. Where else can a player go and get paid much more then they’re worth without having to produce? Nice weather, no state income tax, plenty to do as Joe says. Losing is tolerated here like no other club. You can under preform, grab Uber crutch, and still get paid. Sign me up!

Places like LA, Miami, New Orleans all have a party scene as big or bigger than Tampa. Not to mention cities like NYC, Chicago, Boston, Philly all have alot to do and could be seen as distractions.
You either got players that want to win or you don’t. You either got a competent coach/gm or you don’t. The party stuff is overblown. You don’t think the Dungy era Bucs lead by Sapp liked to party?

  35. BucHead588 Says:

Wow so no news turns into this come on Joe canā€™t be this bored

  36. Nick2 Says:

I dont think Michael Clayton was a partier so end that story. I could be wrong but whether it was Grudens style or whatever I dont think partying got Clayton off track.

sapp and the defenders partied because they had to soften the blow from watching dungy the clowns offensive units attempt to play football. it drove the defense and the fans to drink….

  39. Craig Says:

Maybe in the next few years so of the people down on Tampa will change their minds. If a player has their priorities right they can succeed here.

Besides the Odyssey, we are close to IMG and the Yo Murphy receivers camp. You can also work out in the outdoors all year here.

If the new CBA allows more coach access to their NFL team, places like Yo and IMG will make for a much better player, if the player will take advantage of them.

    Jameis hasn’t.

if strip joints or partying is why Evans and Godwin are putting up insane numbers with America’s QB we should all chip in to have the clubs stay open later and stripper poles installed in their residences. We probably should not roll with patent pending mattress in the yard as it as it has been already done by a young buc receiver….

  41. BucFanDuh Says:

Should I stick to Quarterbacks…. yeah, seems appropriate. Ben Roethlisberger, future HoF QB, raped a 20 year old girl when he was partying in Milledgeville, Ga. Michael Vick, Convicted of animal abuse and various other felony charges in Atlanta, GA. Ryan Leaf violated his 10 year Texas parole, when he broke into a home to steal drugs. Denvers Chad Kelly arrested for felony trespassing in Colorado. Todd Marinovich… sexual assault, drugs, stealing a kids bike. Warren Moon beats his wife and sexually harassed women. That’s just the QB short list. Jameis steals crab legs and gropes uber drivers. Point is, people will be people regardless of where they live. Give an irresponsible person 7-9 figures, they wont be a poster child anywhere they go. Ben Roethlisberger raped a girl in a backwoods podunk GA town, after a night at Capitol City, a dirt poor excuse of a night club…

  42. miken Says:

@nick2… he wasn’t a partier, but became one in Tampa… thats kinda of the point of the story.

  43. Nick2 Says:

@Miken… I get the point and it could be true, I would just think if he were a partier we would have more stories like Mike Williams having a mattress on the front lawn etc. To me Gruden got in his head and kind of broke his confidence. After that his pass catching was not good. I could name plenty more cities where partying could go on, San Diego, LA, New Orleans, New York, Miami to name a few yet as someone else said New Orleans isnt mentioned even though its probably the biggest party town in the U.S. Were there rumors that Clayton was a partier or are we taking the words of some scout?

  44. Nick2 Says:

When i say partier that includes becoming one in Tampa.

  45. Buc believer Says:

It may have more to do with what a complete joke the front office is. John Lynch accomplished in 3 years what two total dumb arses have not done for the Bucs in 12 years!!! Let that sink in!

  47. Mort Says:

New York, Boston, LA, etc all donā€™t have other things to do I guess is the implication? Get the F out of here.

  48. stpetebucsfan Says:

First…we heard this before! Could we put a dagger in this zombie. Tampa is NOT the strip club capital of the country….how about an EXPERT opinion from a magazine devoted to Adult Dancing”

“Associate publisher Dave Manack didn’t hesitate when asked if Tampa is the strip club capital of the world.

“No,” he said. “Not even close. Tampa might not even make the Top 20. For anyone in the industry who knows, itā€™s really not a top market for strip clubs.” Cities like New York, Las Vegas or Miami would have much more of a claim on the title, he said..”

Not even close. From days long past when I might frequent those places I can speak from experience that Tampa clubs tended to be cheap and tacky. Having traveled around the nation there are plenty of cities with great establishments.

A couple of points made by others…the Lightning have never worried about this

The Bucs shouldn’t worry if they select players with quality character. Sometimes you get away with a party animal…Sapp? I do not know if he partied during the season. But when you take losers like Talib or Blount bad stuff usually follows.

This is EXACTLY why so many of us were concerned by JW’s “character” issues leaving FSU. We bought the immature EXCUSE…wow the excuses started early for “blameless” eh? That’s why we freaked when he pulled his AZ stunt and lied about it his very FIRST off season. OK we’re pretty much past that at least.

Finally…ask yourself…is anybody here concerned about Godwin or ME..arguably our two best players right now? Do they put in the work to better themselves.
I think we all know the answer.

Bring in only ME’s and Godwins level character.

  49. Marlow1976 Says:

Let’s see… My oldest kid was born in 2003, the same year the Bucs won the Super Bowl… she’s 16, not 18. What is this buffoon yammering about again? How pathetic. Not surprising that he has to pay for his attention,

  54. JimmyJack Says:

Uuuggg……I makes me sick to see that their might be some correlation to this article and why we are downright awful playing at home.

But to me it’s ridiculous to say it’s a Tampa Bay problem. It’s a culture thing. I am hopeful that the culture will change here and already has started.

And I think it’s naive to write off what this guy is saying. Follow the team leafs. Last time Joe had a article about this was around the same time frame that JPP cussed out a teammate(was it Vernon?) for yucking it up after a loss about partying. Shorthly thereafter Vernon gets cutfor unclear reasons………The very next week Dean who works very closely with Vernon was riding the pine for unclear reasons.

After that string of events our defense, secondary in particular, pulls their heads out of their asses and starts playing solid football. Only a guess but it sure seems all of this relates to what Lombardi is talking about.

Yeah, St. Pete and Clearwater beaches, the watersports, fishing, sailing, jetsking, boating along with the beautiful weather. Yes all of that are also distractions. Yet this guy mentions the strip clubs. Having never been to a Tampa club, I can’t say how much of a distraction that is. But are there only strip clubs in Tampa, Miami? None in Atlanta, Seattle, Denver, NY, Dallas, LA? I call BS on that. If your mind is not completly into the job that is paying you very very well. You might need to focus on the hand that feeds you not the tight chick draped around the pole…

Ok so Joe says “no comment” on was Clayton a big party guy. So being in the locker room every week of the season and getting way closer to the players etc. I will take his word as a good source and move on. I had never heard that but i live outside of Tampa on the east coast so I would know less than those who have seen him out or get rumblings that he may have been. Wow this is more of a story than saying Tampa is a big party town. Clayton “could” have partied his NFL career away? Worse things have happened but that is alarming to me.

  61. Nick2 Says:

I will say right now what I would give to sit down over a beer with Steve or Lee and find out some of the behind the scenes stories of these players. I mean I still am waiting to find out what Desean Jackson did a couple of years ago in relation to Jameis. I hear on Ira’s podcast all the time that there was something not good that he might have done to look Jameis look bad. Too bad there isnt a behind the scenes inside scoop on our Bucs. This is a close as it gets but man there must be some crazy stories such as Josh Freeman and what really happened to him. Partying was a definite possibility there!!

You and people who think like this are clueless idiots. I have lived in the Bay Area since 1982. What is going on here and what is about to happen is amazing. This community, in the last 8 or so years, has transformed big time. I will agree with you on an lousy football team but the Tampa Bay Area is one of the most desirable places to live…ā€¦..in the country. There is a reason Venek of the lightning is heavily invested in this area. Im so glad I was smart enough to invest and hold on to my 6 properties for the last 20 years or so. This is the silliest story I have read on the site since 2009. Mike Lombardi is a tool without a job, and you can tell where he spends his time in Tampa or anywhere else. It is always about the mix of player talent, coaching and plan to be successful

  72. Gman Says:
